Meet Patsy Sorrell, WUMC's New Director of Adult Discipleship This month at Weddington United Methodist Church, we are thrilled to welcome our new Director of Adult Discipleship, Patsy Sorrell. Patsy was born in Columbus, Ohio and grew up in Naperville, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. After high school she attended the College of DuPage and Iowa State University. Patsy comes to Weddington with more than fifteen years of experience serving in the local church. She served as the Director of Adult Discipleship at Wheatland Salem United Methodist Church in Naperville, IL from 2003-2008. Upon completing her theological training and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) she graduated from Northern Seminary in 2008 with a Master of Divinity. She then served as the Pastor of Care Ministries & Discipleship at Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton, IL from 2008-2015. The areas of ministry she provided leadership to included care ministries, adult discipleship, church communications, leadership development and support, pastoral care and hospital visitation, small group development, large group events, children’s ministry, preaching, worship leadership and planning, and more. Patsy is excited to begin her work at Weddington UMC and feels a deep passion for Adult Discipleship. “I love to hear people's stories and how God is at work in their lives. I have always had a heart for connecting people to others and have a real passion for encouraging folks to grow in their relationship with God. Weddington UMC is such a vibrant church with so many different ways to connect, grow, and serve. I'm excited to see God at work in and through Weddington UMC and to consider new ways God is leading us to grow personally and make a difference in our communities and day-to-day lives.” (continued on page 5)

WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore To the Least of These And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ Matthew 25:40 (NRSV) 40

In August, we will be sharing in the Great Week of Service. Why do we do this? The two great commandments are that we love God and that we love our neighbor (Matthew 22:36-40). A student of the biblical law asked Jesus to identify the “neighbor” (Luke 10:29). Following the parable of the Good Samaritan, the lawyer discerned it was the “one who showed mercy.” Jesus told him to “Go and do likewise.” The scripture is clear. A real element of the Christian life is our love for our neighbor. This love is to be love in action, not merely in words. One of the things that is important for me is that my children love each other and be there for each other. I pray that if one of them was in need and the other one had more than enough, that they would help each other. God wants the same thing for His children. Some of our brothers and sisters are struggling. How can we help them? What does loving them look like? During the Great Week of Service, opportunities are given to express our love for our neighbors, to our brothers and sisters. We can sign up to participate in various local missions without a commitment to be long-term in that particular ministry. Page 2

It gives us a chance to see where we feel called to service and where we can make the most difference. Paul called the church the “body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:27). The thing that sets the church apart in service and love to our neighbor is that we do so in the name of and on behalf of our Lord Jesus Christ. When we love through ministry and service, we become the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in our world today. I invite you to consider how you and your family can love our neighbors in the name of and on behalf of our Lord Jesus Christ. Not only will our neighbor be blessed, Jesus is blessed. Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’

In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs Alzheimer’s and Dementia Seminar We are having a seminar on basic information regarding Alzheimer’s and dementia diseases on Wednesday, August 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room in the Family Life Center. This event is meant to help people who are just now navigating how to best help a family member who has received a memory loss disease diagnosis. Jessica Lanier from the Alzheimer’s Association will be present to lead this seminar. We will provide a light dinner as we meet. Please contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office to sign up for the seminar. GriefShare Testimony "My weekly meetings with GriefShare have truly been a blessing for me. I have gotten to meet new friends, and the opportunity to share the loss of those who were and are still dearly loved by friends in the group as well as my own loss in a Christ centered group. Sometimes I believe we don't fully understand what someone is going through until we walk down that road ourselves and at GriefShare we are all experiencing the pain and hurt from losing someone we love. Being with others and hearing their stories, their comforting and encouraging words, their hugs, and just being together has helped in so many ways. We have shared prayers and Bible verses together, laughed and even cried, all the time knowing God is present with us. The facilitators and speakers have been wonderful because they also have been down this road before. I do hope if you have experienced a loss of someone you love, you will attend GriefShare. It is a very uplifting and meaningful series of meetings and sharing for those going through a difficult time in their life." -Janet Hutchison Stephen Ministry Testimony "It is indeed an honor to serve God as a Stephen Minister. There are so many people hurting as a result of a job loss, a death in the family, medical issues, financial issues; the list is long of difficult events and problems. It is very trying for most people to shoulder their burdens alone. Often, our brothers and sisters in need can benefit from spending time with a loving and dedicated Christian who will listen to them, pray for and with them, all in confidence and in a safe place. As a Stephen Minster, I care and I wait on God to cure." -David Pierce, Stephen Minister NA Testimony "Hello, my name is Kasei and I am a recovering addict through the 12 step program of NA. I am so very grateful for this divinely ordered program of NA! Before recovery, I had lost EVERYTHING due to the progression of the disease of addiction, including my connection to God. I'm thankful that I kept going to meetings where I heard stories like mine, was greeted with love and empathy, and found a sponsor; someone who understood all the feelings and struggles of addiction, yet had managed to stay clean for years! This relationship gave me the hope I needed to go on. I gained a new understanding of a loving God. Together we work the 12 steps to deal with the things the disease - or the enemy- place in our path. My life is the complete opposite of what it was. And that is a true miracle. Thank you for allowing NA to meet in your church! Today, I have over five years clean and sponsor newcomers to the program."

Adult Ministries Adult Ministries . Patsy Sorrell Meet Patsy Sorrell (cont.) Patsy’s vision for Adult Discipleship at Weddington is to create opportunities for everyone to be nurtured and encouraged to grow in their faith and experience God's grace and goodness. “I'm a firm believer in practical, faith-filled living. As we invite God into our lives, God shows up in amazing and meaningful ways. My hope is that in creating different types of opportunities for adults to connect, grow, and ponder their relationship with God, it will enable us all to keep our hearts and spirits refreshed and open to God at work in and through us. I also have a soft spot in my heart for leaders and an appreciation for the time, effort, and passion God has given them to share their gifts. God has given me a heart for helping and supporting leaders in their ministry so that they, too, are encouraged and feel equipped to be their best and follow God's lead in their ministry.”

Patsy's family

Adult Ministries New This Fall: Weddington Connections & Fall Ministry Fair Fall is just around the corner and a wonderful time to get connected or re-connected as we seek to intentionally grow in faith together at Weddington Church. Because there are many different ways to connect, this fall we are creating a new publication, Weddington Connections, a resource that will help you preview all the various adult studies, Life Groups, and ministries that are available for adults to participate in this fall. We’ll launch the Fall 2018 Weddington Connections on Sunday, August 19. It will be available in print format, as well as online on the website. In addition, we will also have a Fall Ministry Fair in Helms Hall Sunday, August 19 through Sunday, September 2. These displays will give you an opportunity to preview the adult study materials and groups meeting this fall and learn more about each opportunity to grow. Plan to stop by to browse and be prayerful about how and where God is calling you to grow in faith and relationship in this upcoming new season. If you’re looking for some guidance or have questions you’d like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Patsy Sorrell at the church office. A gentle reminder to leaders: if you have not yet provided us with your group study information, please contact Patsy Sorrell by August 8 so that it can be included in Weddington Connections and the Fall Ministry Fair.

Life Group 2nd Sunday Connection Life Groups are a great way to meet new people and grow in faith here at Weddington Church. There are several different kinds of groups to choose from: Co-Ed, Men’s, Women’s, and special interests like Empty-Nesters, Artists, Weight Loss, Sewing, Study/Walking, etc. The 2nd Sunday of each month a member of our Life Group Ministry Team is available in the Narthex and near the coffee stations in the Family Life Center (FLC) before and after each worship service to answer question and help you find a group that will be a good fit. The next 2nd Sunday Connection will be August 12. Our “Connectors” look forward to helping you get connected here at Weddington Church! In addition to our 2nd Sunday Connection, Patsy Sorrell, our Director of Adult Discipleship is also available throughout the week to answer questions and help you find ways to grow and connect.

August News and Announcements This summer has been incredible. July has been a month full of God moments and travel. At the beginning of July we sent a team to Costa Rica for two weeks. They repaired a parsonage and hosted a VBS for the sweet kids of Belen, Costa Rica. The Holy Spirit moved in the hearts of our youth and bonded our group together more closely than ever before. Each of the youth have shared how they felt they left a part of themselves in Costa Rica. We are truly grateful for the relationships built with the beautiful people down there. We most recently sent a team to Tennessee to do home repairs and build relationships. We look forward to our rising 6th grade mission trip, “SERVE” here at the church and at our Monroe Campus. It’s sure to be a blast and a great introduction into what mission trips are like!
