One of our key values at Weddington Church is being intentional about growing in faith and nurturing our relationships with God. This is something that may look a bit different from one person to the next... and so for that reason we are purposeful in creating a variety of different offerings and resources to meet you where you are and to help you know and follow Jesus. The Adult Discipleship Fall Ministry Fair is designed to help you find ways to grow in faith and get involved at Weddington. You will find ministry displays designed to help you learn more about Life Groups, Bible Studies, Sunday programming, Support Groups, special events, and more. Be sure to stop in Helms Hall to preview study materials, ask questions, and discern how God is calling you to grow in faith in the weeks ahead.

WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Would You Like to Join Us? “Sunday afternoon sounds great. We will grab lunch after church and then we will meet up with you guys. Hey, why don’t you join us for church?” It’s that easy. The thought of inviting someone to church seems so overwhelming. But it is really very easy. George Morris and Eddie Fox share in their book and materials on Faith-Sharing, that each of us have an opportunity everyday to share our faith or invite someone to a faith journey. “That was a great game. We are off to get the kids to Youth Group. Hey, would Joey like to go with our kids to youth?” A few things happened in that short statement: You acknowledged that you are a Christian, that your and your kids are active in church, and an invitation was made to participate. “Lunch on Wednesday sounds great. I have Bible Study Wednesday morning and can meet you by 12:15. Why don’t you come to Bible Study with me and we can go from there? You will love it. It is a great group of women and the leader is awesome.” The word evangelism scares us. We are afraid we will sound judgmental or we are afraid that if we get in a faith conversation we will be asked questions that we cannot answer. Some of us are hesitant to talk about the deeper things in our lives. So, we avoid it. Evangelism simply means sharing “good news.” It is a great word. It is a vital word. That is a word for another day. Let’s just start with the word, “invitation.” An invitation. People like being invited to things. “We are going to a movie. Would you like to join us?” Even if we Page 2

cannot go, we were honored by the invitation. Someone valued us enough to invite us. We were invited to a wedding. Wow, that means we were valued by the couple and family enough that they invited us to share in their sacred day. Invitations honor people. It says, “You are important to me.” An invitation to worship, to Bible Study, to Life Group, Youth Group, to Vacation Bible Camp, or to make sandwiches for missions, is an invitation to join you in something that is important in your life. That is not judgmental. An invitation is honoring someone enough to invite them to participate with you. We send out invites all the time. There are even apps and programs that will send invitations and track responses. We are already very good at invitations. So let’s invite our family, friends, and neighbors to this vital part of our lives, our relationship with Jesus Christ and His church. Morris and Fox remind us that we have so many opportunities. The challenge, they remind us, is being aware of them and acting on them. So many people are searching. So many people desire to be a part of a church but visiting one the first time can be intimidating. An invitation is a gift. We are inviting someone to join our church family. To become one of us. To belong. To be in relationship with Jesus Christ. My prayer is that “invitation” becomes part of our church’s DNA. I invite you to join me in inviting others to join our church family. This invitation honors them and definitely honors God. In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry Moore, Senior Pastor

Missions

Local Missions . Rev. Rocío Ávila-Ramírez

Each year Weddington UMC celebrates the Great Week of Service, where we focus on a variety of service opportunities concentrated in one week. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved and learn more about the missions that Weddington UMC supports throughout the year. We invite you to join us August 11-18, 2019!

MONDAY, AUGUST 12 - Canned and Dry Food Drive: 1:00 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall

Union County Crisis Assistance provides local families in financial crisis with life’s basic needs: emergency rent and utility assistance, clothing, and food. They walk with families by giving emotional and educational support to stabilize financial health and move toward self-sufficiency. We financially support this agency as a church, but we also want to be in service by restocking their food pantry through a food drive. Be here on August 12 as we sort, bag, and deliver food donations.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 13 - Operation Sandwich: 1:00 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall

Every second Saturday of the month WUMC volunteers make and deliver 900+ sandwiches to Urban Ministry Center and Union County Shelter to feed our homeless brothers and sisters! This Great Week of Service, we want to introduce you to this ongoing mission opportunity at our church! Join us as we make sandwiches to battle hunger.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14 - Troop Care Boxes: 1:00 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall

We always keep our troops in prayer. In addition to that, we want to send a simple gesture of care for all they do by sending them goodies. Please support this drive. We owe so much to their life-giving service. Let’s serve them as generously as we can this Great Week. Plan to be here to sort donations and pack bags for our troops.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 17 - Back to School Bash: 10:00 a.m. at Benton Heights Elementary

This is our first year celebrating a Back to School Bash with Benton Heights Elementary! We are very excited about continuing and strengthening our relationship with them. Benton is in walking distance of our Monroe campus and most of our Homework Help Ministry children are students there. Our goal is to provide Benton students with new shoes, socks, and backpacks filled with school supplies. Soles4Souls has met us halfway and donated shoes, and Weddington UMC has received a donation to provide the rest of the shoes we’ll need! For Great Week, please donate new back packs, socks, and school supplies, and give us your loving presence and service on August 17. We expect to serve no less than 300 children! We need many hands and loving hearts to welcome, wash little feet, and pray for these beautiful students as they prepare to walk a new school year. If you are interested in serving at this event, please contact Leah Primm at the church office.

Great Week Donations Over the summer we will be collecting donation items to be used for several of the Great Week service projects. Drop off days for donations will be on Sundays through August 4 during worship hours. Adult Ministries Adult Ministries . Patsy Sorrell September is just around the corner. Soon, we will begin a new ministry season. Plans are underway for new opportunities to grow in faith and as disciples of Jesus Christ. When we talk about our vision and what’s important for adults here at Weddington Church, the first thing that is mentioned is the importance of being involved in a small group. The reason it’s important is that in a congregation this size, small groups are a place where we experience a sense of belonging – and through Life Groups, Bible Study groups, and Sunday School groups, we get to know one another, open the Bible to dig deeper and dialogue about life and faith issues, care for one another through the joys and challenges of life, and encourage one another to stay focused on the things that are important throughout the week. There’s a saying that many churches refer to when talking about spiritual growth - circles are better than rows. Personally, I think both are important. Rows allow us to focus on God as we worship, but the strength of our churches and our personal discipleship journey (how we intentionally grow in faith) is what happens in circles. When we get together to share our lives, pray, open the Bible, and share our thoughts and questions and doubts, it connects us in a deeper way with God, helps us to stay focused and growing in faith, and allows us to build meaningful relationships as we serve, encourage, and care for one another along the way. As the days of summer begin to wind down, there are a few ways for you to learn more about how you can get involved in a discipleship opportunity that will help you to grow as a disciple in the weeks and months ahead…

Adult Fall Ministry Fair

Sunday, August 18 through Sunday, September 1 in Helms Hall These displays will give you an opportunity to preview the adult study materials and groups meeting this fall and learn more about opportunities to grow. Plan to stop by to browse and be prayerful about how and where God is calling you to grow in faith and relationship in the months ahead.

Connections – Fall 2019 Our Adult Ministry guide, Connections, will be available beginning Sunday, August 18. This guidebook is designed to help you learn more about the many ways you can grow, connect, and get involved at Weddington Church. Printed copies will be available at the church or you can view it on our website www.weddingtonchurch.org/connections.

We’ll look to Jesus and ask Him to fill us with all that He is and has for us to live transformed lives. Ladies, come away with us to Lake Junaluska, NC (just west of Asheville) for a time to refresh your heart, mind, and soul, and untangle yourself from the demands of everyday life. Our guest speaker is Elizabeth Poplin, a passionate women’s ministry leader and co-founder of Ember CLT, a worship gathering that welcomes women throughout the Charlotte area. She will invite us to look below the surface of life and faith issues and leave with hope and a renewed sense of God’s heart. Expect to laugh. Expect to dig deep. Expect to untangle from things that tangle us up, and leave renewed… and transformed. Early bird registration is available through July 31. Registration is open through October 1. Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs Fall GriefShare and DivorceCare The loss of a loved one through death or

divorce can be devastating as the pain of grief takes over. We are blessed to have support groups for people trying to cope with this loss. Fall GriefShare will begin on Wednesday, September 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hemby House Room 1. Fall DivorceCare will begin on Wednesday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 20, downstairs in the Sanctuary building. These ministries provide compassionate support to people who have lost a loved one to either death or separation/divorce. Please make note of these dates either for yourself or for someone else you know who would benefit from being involved in one of these groups. For more information, please contact Sandra McKee at the church office.

Shining a Light on Domestic Violence Our community has a wonderful faith-based ministry focused on supporting

women impacted by abuse. Although we often think of domestic violence as only physical abuse, verbal, emotional, and spiritual abuse is just as hurtful and dangerous. Physical, as well as spiritual, emotional, and mental safety is just as important to God. He cares for His children, sees their tears, and hears their prayers. This ministry hosts weekly support meetings and can provide referrals to other helpful resources. When asked, "How has the group helped you?" one of the women responded by saying: "Understanding that my situation wasn’t unique and other women have been through similar situations and have come out stronger, overcome the struggles, and are living life again. The support and acceptance showed me that I will be OK and joyous days are ahead." If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out to Shine a Light on Domestic Violence Ministry to receive safe, non-judgmental support at www.shinealightondv.org, by phone at 727-452-7007, or by email at shinealightondv@yahoo.com.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) Testimony "When I came to Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional

Families (ACA) I had a lot of shame and reacted to life in inappropriate ways. Gradually, as I attended meetings and worked the 12 steps, I learned to love myself and to fully accept God’s love. This, in turn, freed me to think and interact in new and healthy ways. All glory goes to God for the salvation I have though Jesus Christ, for bringing me into the ACA fellowship and, through it, showing me a healthy way to live. It is my hope that all people who are wounded from dysfunction will come to have this freedom." -Anonymous
