25 Years of

Scouting This month at Weddington, we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Scouting. Both Cub Scouts Pack 99 and Boy Scouts Troop 99 were started in April of 1991 and have been a wonderful ministry of our church ever since. Over this time, Pack 99 and Troop 99 have completed many service projects, fundraisers and community service hours. During the past year alone, the combined Scouts have completed over 700 community service hours from projects such as Scouting for Food, which collected over 2,450 pounds of food for charity this past year alone. Currently the Boy Scouts consist of 42 scouts and 24 leaders. The Cub Scouts consist of 85 scouts and 18 leaders. Both groups take part in monthly outdoor activities such as camping, kayaking, rock climbing, and rappelling. The groups also partake in service activities, fundraisers, trips and religious studies throughout the year.

The Cub Scouts of Pack 99

Over the past 25 years, 73 members of Troop 99 have earned their rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award earned by youth in Scouting. Additionally, this year the Cub Scouts of Pack 99 is the 4th largest Pack in the seven county Scout Council. We are so honored to have Scouting be a part of our church for the past 25 years. Join us on Sunday, February 14 for Scout Sunday, as we celebrate 25 years of this wonderful ministry. If you are interested in learning more about Scouting and getting your child involved, please contact Greg Kemp at gkemp001@carolina.rr.com.

Monthly Reflections . Reverend Dr. Terry L. Moore Lent: 40 Days to Prepare The season of Lent is a 40 day period of time, not counting Sundays, to prepare to enter with Jesus into Jerusalem and journey to the cross. Lent is a time of repentance and reflection on what it means to be a Christian and disciple of Christ. Sundays are not counted during this season since every Sunday is a celebration of Easter. The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10. We will have a service at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary including the imposition of ashes as a sign of our repentance and reconciliation with God. Some people like to give up something during the season of Lent as a reminder of all that God gave up for us. Others like to take on something such as Bible Study or acts of service as a reminder of what Christ took on for us. We invite you to prayerfully consider how you will observe this journey with Jesus to the Cross. Lent often begins with a reflection on the temptations of Jesus. How do we handle the temptations that Satan presents to us? C.S. Lewis wrote a classic entitled, The Screwtape Letters. It is a book of letters from a senior devil to an apprentice devil who has just been assigned his first human. His assignment is to lead this person away from God. It is interesting to view temptation from the side of the tempter. I will be preaching a series during Lent on how we are often subtly tempted to walk away from God, one small step at a time.

Page 2

Rev. Erin Yow will be preaching a series during the season of Lent at our Marvin and Bonds Grove campuses on “Giving It Up. Traditionally, people give something up for Lent such as chocolate, caffeine, or social media, as a way to reflect and prepare for Easter. During this seven week sermon series, including Palm Sunday and Easter, we will look at things we can give up in order to free us for a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. We will learn that as we give up control, busyness, shame, and ultimately our lives to God, we can take on new life with Jesus Christ. Invite a friend and join us on this journey.
