Register today at www.weddingtonchurch. org/life-groups or call the church office. Childcare will be available during this event. Get answers to all of your questions about Life Groups in one place! For more information contact Rev. Mark Curtis.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore On the Twelfth Day of Christmas When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:10-11 (NRSV) 10

January 6, the 12th day of Christmas, is Epiphany. Epiphany is often overlooked in our culture. We tend to start celebrating Christmas the day after Thanksgiving and conclude the day after Christmas. In many cultures, the twelve days of Christmas go from December 25 – January 6. Epiphany comes from the Greek word, epiphaneia, which means manifestation. Epiphany is the “manifestation of God.” The scripture for Epiphany is Matthew 2:1-12 where the wise men come searching for the Christ child. The wise men were Gentiles. Early in Matthew, God reveals that the Christ child, the promised Messiah, was not only for the Jews, but for the world. God manifested God’s only begotten son to the world. For God so loved the world… (John 3:16). It is interesting to realize that when the wise men arrived, Jesus was almost two years old. What an image. The wise men bow down and offer gifts to the toddler, Jesus. We know the age of Jesus because Herod asked exactly what time they saw the star (Matthew 2:7). Page 2

When Herod realized that the wise men were not coming back to tell him where this child was, he killed all the children in and around Bethlehem under two years old based on the time he had learned from them (Matthew 2:16). The wise men offered gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Some suggest that through these gifts we learn that the child is God’s anointed king (gold), God’s appointed priest (frankincense), and for the one who would die for the world (myrrh – often used to anoint the body of the deceased). Epiphany is God’s reminder that this gift of the promised Messiah, the Christ, the Savior, the Lord, is God’s gift to all of us. We leave our tree and lights up through January 6, the 12 days of Christmas. It seems a little counter-cultural, but our faith is countercultural. Epiphany is God’s reminder that the gift of the Christ-child is also a gift for me, and for you. Love in Christ, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor

Missions . Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez. December Local Missions

Missions

Foreign Mission Chairperson . Bob Consoli

December 2017 was a month of Christmas celebration through local missions. December 9: The Gift of Giving, led by Weddington Christian Preschool, welcomed many families to our Monroe campus. The children were able to select gifts for adults in their lives, wrap them, and then enjoy Christmas snacks while their parents caroled in the Monroe community. December 15: Christmas Caroling in the surrounding area of our Monroe campus was wonderful! Dr. Houze led the way as a group of both Weddington and Monroe folks sang carols and the brass band accompanied. Entire families opened their doors with cheers and cell phones recording. It is meaningful to be present in the community, especially with God's cheer! December 16: Community Christmas Dinner Families from the neighborhood joined us at our Monroe campus for a delicious Christmas dinner, thanks to a generous gift we received of 100 eight pound hams. We were also able to serve dinner to our neighbors at Turning Point, a domestic violence shelter for women and children. December 17: We delivered Christmas hams to 83 homes! Organized in teams, we knocked on doors and delivered food to some neighboring apartments at our Monroe campus. December 22: Cub Scout Pack 99 purchased and wrapped Christmas gifts for children from the Monroe community. 83 children were blessed with these gifts. All of these celebrations have opened the door for evangelism and discipleship. We look forward to January being a month of home visits and phone calls with the people we connected with in December. It is wonderful to serve people and share the Gospel. Thank you to all for supporting with prayers and your service.

Come join the Kenya Mission Team as they help celebrate this important milestone in July/August. The team will work with the children at the orphanage, conduct a regional VBS for hundreds of local children, feed remote villages in the Samburu, worship with pastors of the GGFAN, and experience unconditional love. March – We are considering a spring trip that would include a communications team to focus on increasing GGFAN’s social media reach and preparing materials for the 10th Anniversary celebrations. Vision/health screening is also being considered. Contact Bradd Blocker/Paula Burnett to reserve your spot: dblocker@carolina.rr.com or paula@ wellsfargochamionship.com. We are looking for anyone interested in joining us that would be interested in teaching VBS, working with the children at Home of the Good Shepherd with a tutoring program, taking the children to a National Park, working with the Famine Relief program, working on information technology, and any other need that God has planned for us. Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Support Group Testimony "Recently I received an e-mail update from a family who experienced a major crisis with their young adult son Christmas Eve 2016. The parents struggled through the Family to Family class and stayed committed to their son. This year is peaceful with the son receiving treatment for addiction and schizophrenia. He is living at home with his parents. NAMI made a difference in the lives of this family and their story fills my heart with hope and gratitude. I want you and the church to know how much your support has meant to all of us who meet under the welcoming roof of Weddington UMC." -Evann Duncan The NAMI Family to Family support group for people with loved ones who have mental illness meets the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Jay Emery Classroom. GriefShare We are not meant to walk alone when we are going through a difficult time, especially during the death of a family member or friend. GriefShare is a support group for people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. An amazing team of facilitators who have all walked through grief themselves help lead GriefShare. The first session of GriefShare will begin on Wednesday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hemby House. Don’t walk alone in your grief. We want to walk with you. Please contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office for more information about GriefShare or if you would like to sign up for this group. Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) is an organization that is intended to provide a forum for individuals who desire to recover from the effects of growing up in an alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional family. All are welcome. A desire to heal is recommended. This group will meet weekly, beginning January 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 213 in the Sanctuary building. Winter Fest Health Fair January 13, 9:00-12:00 p.m. at the Monroe Campus. The Winter Fest Health Fair, sponsored by our Health Ministry Team, will provide opportunities for people in our Monroe Campus community to have access to healthy living support. Our plan is to have a Mobile Health Unit present for cholesterol screening, blood pressure checking, and possibly diabetes testing. There will be a healthy cooking demonstration, childcare seat safety instruction, and we will have someone present from the Community Health Services, a free health clinic in Monroe. We will also have Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services to share how they can be of help with prescriptions. A healthy breakfast will be served during the events. We will have prayer time in the sanctuary for people who need prayer. Children will have activities as well. This will be an exciting outreach. Please keep our Health Fair Winter Fest in your prayers.

Adult Ministries Women's Ministry Lucy Price Circle invites all ladies of WUMC to our January meeting, which will be Tuesday evening, January 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hemby House. Note that this is a change in venue from our recent meetings. We will have a social time from 6:30-7:00 and then the meeting will begin at 7:00. Patricia Hadley will be with us to instruct us in a string yarn scarf making activity. We will also be assembling Valentine gift bags for the children at the Monroe Campus. The Lucy Price Circle is currently the only circle that meets in the evening, so join us and meet with other women, many who work away from the home and are not able to meet during the day. Our circle tries to be mission focused and has projects, activities, and events to help House of Pearls (a Christian transition home), our Monroe Campus Afterschool children, a family with special needs, and other mission-oriented opportunities. Our meetings may have a speaker, an activity, and/or a meal. We enjoy eating and having social times, but also want to share the love of Christ by serving others. The Lucy Price Circle normally meets on the second Tuesday evening from September through May. For more information, contact Carolyn Canzonieri at cpc.canzonieri@gmail.com.

Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Rev. Ed Briggs Abba’s Child by Brennan Manning "Recently, I had the opportunity to read Abba’s Child. Every page I read was filled with such truth about God and how God sees us. Abba in Hebrew is translated in English as Papa, which is an intimate term for Father. Author Brennan Manning helps the reader to see how God is really our Papa who desires for us to come as we are to sit in His lap to experience His love and acceptance. There are times when it is difficult to do so because we don’t want to get in touch with who we really are. We can be imposters who try to put on a good face to deem ourselves worthy of God’s love. The imposter seeks to attach oneself to that which has no importance, clothing with a false glitter turning away from what is real. The false self causes one to live in a world where one craves for compliments to satisfy the quest for significance. Appearances are everything. This attempt to be perfect can be tiresome. Manning is an advocate of letting God love us as we are. This realization of God’s love and acceptance can transform our lives to where we are able to claim we are Abba’s child. Once we live out of this, we will relate differently to the world around us. We will become much more loving and accepting of people around us. I strongly recommend this book because of how I am seeking more so to rest in Abba and to live by grace not performance. I don’t have this down pat, but I do have His Grace that moves me further in my journey of seeing who God really is and how God sees me. If you desire to be on this same journey, then this book is for you." - Rev. Ed Briggs You can check out a copy of this Great Book! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 in the Sanctuary Building or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center. The Resource Center is currently open only on Sunday mornings from 9:15 until 12:15 and is volunteer staffed. If you are interested in helping in this ministry, please contact resourcecenter@weddingtonchurch.org.

Adult Ministries Upcoming Bible Studies Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. Wednesday mornings beginning January 3, 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Bonds Grove Fellowship Hall and Wednesday evenings 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall. Teacher: Rev. Mark Curtis. In this eight-session study, you will discover why Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis is one of the most read and beloved Christian books of all time. But seventy years later from when it was first delivered on radio, what relevance does it have to our world today? Host Eric Metaxas and a variety of Christian leaders−including Philip Yancey, Alister McGrath, Devin Brown, Paul McCusker, Douglas Gresham, and others−help us understand the timeless message of C. S. Lewis in fresh ways for a new generation. Books can be purchased through Amazon, Christianbook.com, and Cokesbury. Everyday Conversations Wednesday evenings beginning January 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hemby House Room 8. Teacher: Rev. Amy Hutchison. The study will last 9 weeks. To register for this study, please go to our website or contact Rev. Amy. Firethorne Bible Study Thinc Diphruntly - Why So Hard to Think Differently? by James MacDonald. Starting Monday, February 5, 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Louise Padfield’s home. Why do we lose our temper? Why do we tend to hurt those we care most for? How do families find themselves broken? The reason is often the way we think. Thinking determines outcome more than anything else. Your actions, attitudes, and self-awareness all flow from the way you think. This 10-week Bible study will help you face the reality that nothing is going to change until you think differently. God offers our only hope for victory over disposition, dysfunction, double-mindedness, and every other mental stronghold. With Him, we can think differently. Member workbooks will be available at our first meeting for $14.00 each. Contact Louise Padfield at lpadfield8@gmail.com or 704-618-0554 to register. Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World by Max Lucado. Beginning January 8 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hemby House We are so excited to begin Max Lucado’s Bible Study Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World. This Bible Study/ Video series teaches us to worry less and trust more. Through God’s Word, Philippians 4:4-4:8 teaches us to be anxious for nothing and have true peace from God that surpasses all human understanding. This six week Bible Study will be a time to meditate on His Word, to learn from Max Lucado’s book and video series, to pray without ceasing, and to live a life of peace and joy! Ephesians: Discover Together Bible Study by Sue Edwards. Wednesday mornings beginning January 31 from 9:30-Noon in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall. At the instant you ask Jesus to redeem you, you have everything you need to live a victorious Christian life. Paul tells us this in the first fourteen verses of his letter to the Ephesians. Then why do so many of us struggle with the same sins over and over? Because we don’t know who we are. As we work our way through the book of Ephesians we are going to discover truths that will help us sit with Christ, walk a worthy life, and take a stand against any force that threatens our relationship with our Lord and Savior. Ephesians – Discovering Your Identity and Purpose in Christ is a 10-session study written by Sue Edwards. Join me as we dig deep into Ephesians and grow in our knowledge of the Bible’s spiritual warfare manual. Childcare available. Contact Marty Cook at marty@cookfamily.com or 704-907-0074 to sign up.
