August 13-20, 2017 We invite you to be active in our Great Week of Service! Each year, WUMC celebrates the Great Week of Service by focusing on a variety of service opportunities, concentrated in one week. Throughout the week, you will be able to serve through projects such as a neighborhood clean-up of our Monroe Campus community, building projects with a homeless shelter, a canned food drive, making hygiene kits for school kids of Monroe elementary schools, and more. We look forward to this Great Week as we serve God by serving our neighbor together! This year's Great Week of Service will begin on Sunday, August 13 with a prayer of blessing during worship, working together as Christians for those in need on Monday through Saturday, and closing the week with a prayer of thanksgiving on Sunday, August 20 during worship. The Great Week of Service is a wonderful opportunity to get involved and learn more about the missions that WUMC supports throughout the year. There are mission opportunities for all ages at various times and locations to choose from! We will collect donation items for two of our service projects on two weekends, July 29 and 30 and August 5 and 6, from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Drop off will be in both Helms Hall and the FLC. Please go to our website to see a full list of items needed. To see a full list of scheduled mission opportunities, please see Page 3 or go to www.weddingtonchurch.org/great-week-of-service. Register online or call Lisa Keeler, Missions Coordinator, at the church office to learn more.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore The Church in Prayer for the State July 4 is a national holiday. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 by delegates from the 13 colonies. Many see the 4th of July as the birthday of the United States of America. There will be picnics, parades, and fireworks. For some in church leadership, questions are often raised on the relationship between the church and state. Should we in the church discuss matters of state? Should the state be involved in matters of the church? How do we understand the separation of church and state? Is it appropriate to sing patriotic songs in worship? For some, this is a passionate and complex discussion. One thing that is clear in scripture is that the church is to be involved with the state by praying for its leaders. The Apostle Paul encourages us: First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. 3 This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 (NRSV)

I am free to pray openly at a public table giving thanks to God for the food before us as well as for the person or family I am with. There are many in our world who do not have this blessing. I give thanks for the men and women who have been willing to lay their lives on the line for our country and our freedom through military service, law enforcement, or humble submission for the sake of peace. Our country is not perfect. Nor do we have a perfect history. I am part of that imperfect country and history. The church is part of that imperfect history. So, I pray. I pray for our leaders: I try to remind myself to pray for them before I critique them, especially since I would never want their role. I pray for our people: I ask forgiveness for our sins and grace for our future. I pray for peace in our world and in our country. I pray for unity in such a divisive age. I give thanks for our freedoms and our blessings. And I pray that God will guide us to share our blessings with those who have little and that all His people may someday have the freedom and blessings we often take for granted.

1

God and country: I love God with all my heart and I am grateful to God for the privilege of living in this country. I am free to preach and teach the good news of Jesus Christ without fear of persecution.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NRSV) 14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. May “God bless America to the glory and honor of God. In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Senior Pastor

Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Elizabeth Mitchell The Shack by William P. Young If you are like me, you love a good novel with a compelling story and characters that make us feel emotionally connected and intrigued. This is exactly what I found and more in William P. Young's The Shack. The story follows a father's recent tragedy and deals with extremely emotional issues. What I love about the book though, is it's message of grace and hope even in our darkest times. The book uses manifestations of the Trinity as three persons which I found to be really beautiful and personable. I think there is a lot to be learned from this gripping story of faith and forgiveness. I highly recommend this amazing and powerful book, which has also recently been made into a major motion picture. -Elizabeth Mitchell, Director of Communications You can check out a copy of this Great Book! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center.

Weddington Christian Preschool . Emily Campbell, Director News and Announcements Families of Preschoolers – Wishing you summer blessings! Remember to keep reading to your children this summer – even the youngest toddler will benefit from time spent snuggled next to you with a good book in hand. The Public Libraries are offering the program: “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” as a way to encourage your child’s love for reading. • To find the program in a library near you, visit www.1000booksbeforekindergarten.org/find-a-program. • Reading to your child is a powerful way to boost his or her language, problem solving, empathy, literacy, and comprehension skills. Remember that many children are ready to hear God’s Word right from the Bible (especially The Living Bible). Be sure to read it yourself first and be prepared to answer questions on a child’s level.

Keep those math skills sharp this summer with great real life experiences: • While at the grocery store ask your little one to pick up 2 cans of corn and one can of tomatoes. Ask how many cans are in the cart all together. • Play “I Spy” while waiting for food to arrive at your restaurant table. “I spy something that is a circle”, or, “I spy something that is green”. 3D shapes are part of the Common Core Curriculum requirements and add terrific vocabulary words for your child: sphere, cylinder, cone, cube. These are wonderful “I Spy”searches. Summer Camps There are still a few openings in the July and August WCP Summer Camps. Contact Emily Gray at egray@wcpreschool.com for more information.

Children’s Ministry . Carolyn Nelson News and Announcements June Fun Days at the Monroe Campus We had a great time with June Fun Days at the Monroe campus. Some of the favorite activities were the giant water slide, shooting off bottle rockets, making ocean slime and painting with frozen paint. The kids not only had lots of fun but they also learned important lessons. We learned that if we have faith and focus on Jesus like Peter did when he walked on water then we can get through the rough parts of life. We looked at Psalms 36:5 and talked about how God loves us no matter what. We concluded by talking about how God made us with unique gifts and that we are his masterpieces. I have no doubt that children not only had fun but they also experienced God’s love. Thank you to those who served and prayed to make June Fun Days possible. Vacation Bible Camp in Monroe Once again we will bringing our VBC to the Monroe campus on Tuesday, July 11- Thursday, July 13 from 9:30-12:30. Many volunteers are needed to make this event a blessing to everyone. If you or your teen are interested in serving in this ministry, please contact Carolyn Nelson to learn how you can serve. Volunteer forms for this VBC can be found at the KidCheck station and can be turned in at the VBC booth located at the KidCheck station.

Children and Youth Ministries Maker Fun Factory VBC 2017 What a week we had at this year’s Vacation Bible Camp! Over 460 children learned how they were created by God and built for a purpose. The children donated a ton of food to bless the Union County Community Shelter in Monroe. Our 5th graders went out into the community to visit our friends at White Oak, the local JAARS center, and Samaritan’s Feet. They made special gifts to bring with them to White Oak and even made bookmarks for the children at The Good Shepherd Orphanage in Kenya. Over 145 volunteers—youth and adults—became “Jesus with skin on” to the children. Our church is blessed to have so many people who care about the children in our community. Thank you to all who contributed by touching lives, changing hearts, and drawing kids and adults closer to the God who created them! Can’t wait for next year!

Justin Lineberry Announced as New Director of Praise and Worship This month at Weddington United Methodist Church, we are thrilled to announce Justin Lineberry as our new full-time Director of Praise and Worship. Justin’s first Sunday in his new role was June 11. Justin was raised in Galax, Virginia where he attended school and was raised in church where he says some of his earliest memories come from. “I come from a long line of musicians. Some of my earliest memories are sitting in the pew in our church watching my grandmother play the piano while my grandfather, aunts, and uncles sang in the choir. I started singing in front of audiences in the third grade, and have never really stopped.” After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in History, Justin and his wife Micheal moved to North Carolina in 2004 where he began working primarily in sales in the architectural glass industry. Justin and Micheal have been attending Weddington UMC since 2005. Justin began serving on the 9:30 Praise and Worship Team shortly after his family’s first visit to the church. In April of 2010, he began leading the 10:10 praise and worship service which he describes as being “one of the greatest blessings of his life. To be a part of what God is doing in and through our church has been such a rewarding and humbling experience.” Justin is looking forward to his continued work at Weddington through the music ministry and has a huge passion for praise and worship music and leadership. “In my mind, music is one of the things that binds us together. In one way or another, we are all inspired or moved emotionally by music, which is such a powerful platform for worship. It allows us both individually and collectively to have an authentic encounter with the Living God. As a musician, there is no higher calling than to be used as an instrument of the Holy Spirt to help lead others in worship.” Justin’s main tasks will be to lead the praise and worship ministry of our church. He will be responsible for the growth and development of our 9:30, 10:10, and Youth Praise Team ministries here at the Weddington campus, as well as supporting the Praise and Worship ministries of our other campuses. Justin has felt a strong call from God to this position and to music ministry and has many ideas and aspirations for his new role. “I think that one of my greatest hopes is that we continue to develop our culture as a church where people feel free to express outwardly what they feel inwardly towards the Lord. Worship is such a crucial part of our faith walk, both privately and when we come together as the body of Christ. I urge each of you to worship the Lord in all that you do and then let the overflow of your hearts pour out when we gather as the church.” Please join us in welcoming Justin, his wife Micheal, and their two boys Wyatt and Noah (9) into this new role in our community of faith. We look forward to Justin’s continued ministry at Weddington United Methodist as we seek to worship God with passion. Page 10

We can definitely find a spot for your strengths! We need strong muscles for heavy lifting and warm friendly faces for greeting and talking to our shoppers all while serving our mission of being the hands and feet of Jesus. The exciting news is that if you volunteer you get to shop EARLY before the doors open to the public! Visit our website for more details. For more information please visit our website www.weddingtonkidsconsignmentsale.com, watch our Facebook page, or reach out to us at weddingtonkidsconsignment@hotmail.com. The sale continues to bless our community. The bi-annual Kids Consignment sale raises money that supports the church and local missions. Union County charities such as Operation Reach-Out, Turning Point, and House of Pearls, as well as Camp Lurecrest, Matthews Help Center, UC Crisis Assistance, UC Community Shelter, The Closet of Southbrook Church, Dressed for Success, and Help Crisis Pregnancy Center are examples of organizations that benefit from the success of the Weddington Kids Consignment Sale through monetary gifts and unsold item donations from generous consignors. Within the church, money is allocated to the general budget, scholarships for youth mission trips, a youth college scholarship, children’s ministries, the preschool and Weddington Christian Academy, and to United Methodist Women outreach programs, to name a few.
