August 12-19, 2018 Each year Weddington UMC celebrates the Great Week of Service, where we focus on a variety of service opportunities concentrated in one week. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved and learn more about the missions that Weddington UMC supports throughout the year. We invite you to join us August 12-19, 2018! Throughout the Great Week of Service, you will have the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the local community with a variety of projects and events. Service opportunities will include making sandwiches to feed the hungry, processing and preparing shoes to be distributed around the world with Samaritan’s Feet, serving the children of the Monroe Campus community with fun activities, fellowship, and a meal, and many more! The Great Week of Service will begin on Sunday, August 12, with a prayer of blessing during worship, followed by a week of serving together as church family and neighbor, and close in worship with a prayer of thanksgiving and gratitude on Sunday, August 19. Several of our service projects will require donated items. Even if you can’t make time to serve in person during the Great Week of Service, participating by making a donation of items is a much needed avenue of service. We will collect donations on two Sunday mornings, July 29 and August 5. Drop off will be in both Helms Hall and in the Family Life Center gym. Coming soon: a complete schedule of mission opportunities, a list of items to donate, and how to sign up to participate. Keep up with our weekly eNews or check the church website for updates. Turn to Page 3 for a partial list of opportunities to look forward to during Great Week of Service.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Jesus Loves the Little Children I love the sounds of children. When a child is laughing, I cannot help but smile or laugh myself. The sound of children playing and enjoying life is such a gift. To hear children singing the songs of our faith touches our hearts. I love to hear children asking questions about God. I love to see the look on a child’s face as they hear someone telling them about Jesus Christ. Children are such a gift from God. Jesus loved the children too. Mark 10:13-16 (NRSV) 13 People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. This week, we have had the privilege of hearing these sounds and seeing these faces. Vacation Bible Camp is such a great experience. We will be doing it again in Monroe. When we are in ministry with children, we allow them to feel the arms of Jesus wrap around them and to be blessed by Him.

Page 2

Jesus was serious about the children. Mark said Jesus became “indignant” when people tried to prevent the children from coming to Him. Later, Jesus said that when we welcome a child in His name, we welcome Him. And, he warned us against causing a child to stumble. Matthew 18:5-6 (NRSV) 5 Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. 6 “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea. It is a privilege to be in ministry with children. When we do, we receive Christ Himself. We fulfill the commitment we make each time we baptize a child. Thank you to all who serve in ministry with the children. If you would like to join in ministry with children, we would love to hear from you. You will be blessed!

In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs The Warning Signs of Depression and Suicidal Thoughts Due to the recent suicides of two celebrities, depression and suicide have been more in the forefront. The following information from WebMd is a good article on discerning the signs of severe depression and suicidal thoughts. Please read this article so that we may be more proactive in getting people the help they need. Symptoms of Severe Depression • Insomnia or excessive sleeping • Irritability • Loss of interest in activities that used to be enjoyable • Hopelessness • Persistent thoughts of something bad happening

• Thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts • In very severe cases, psychotic symptoms (such as hallucinations or delusions) • Inability to take care of oneself, such as eating, bathing, or fulfilling family or work responsibilities

Although you might feel that there's no hope, talk to your doctor about treatment options. Even severe depression symptoms can be treated. Risk Factors for Suicide Not all people with risk factors will be suicidal. In addition to depression or other mental illness, risk factors for suicide include: • Firearms in the home • Current or past history of substance abuse • Incarceration • Past history of suicide attempt • Feelings of hopelessness • Family history of suicide • Family history of mental illness or substance abuse If you are severely depressed or have suicidal thoughts, tell your primary care doctor, psychiatrist, or therapist. Or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline anytime at (800) 273-TALK. If you feel that you can't control the urge to harm yourself, or if you've already taken steps to harm yourself, call 911 or go to the emergency room without delay. You may need to be hospitalized for supervised treatment to reduce the risk of suicide. Source: WebMD.com

Adult Ministries Pastoral Care Ministry Opportunities Stephen Minister Referrals It is exciting to know that three of our ten new Stephen Ministers have been assigned a care receiver. They are already making a difference in the lives of others who are hurting. There are many more people who need our caring touch. Stephen Ministry Testimony "I believe it is a person searching for help because they have become wounded. With our help, grace, listening, support, prayers, and God’s help… they will find peace and happiness. At times the road and scenario along the way may be rocky or smooth as their story unfolds, but the goal remains the same! We are here to be the Care Giver so God can help them smile again! Thank you again for this experience. It means so much to me!" Waltonwood and Providence Meadows Did you know we have two retirement living residences where we have weekly Bible studies and Sunday afternoon worship services? Seniors from both Waltonwood and Providence Meadows are experiencing care, support, and spiritual nourishment during our time with them. It is a blessing to see how the residents are so open to us and how appreciative they are for our outreach. Various individuals have shared how their lives are being touched by God and encouraged through our ministry. Keep these wonderful people in your prayers as we seek to be the hands and feet of Jesus at both Waltonwood and Providence Meadows. Needed: Pianists for Waltonwood Assisted Living Worship People who can play the piano are needed to serve at Waltonwood Assisted Living worship on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. The commitment is to serve as a substitute for our regular pianists. Providing your talent will be a big blessing to the residents who attend our worship service. Please contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office if you are feeling called to be a part of our worship ministry at Waltonwood. Drivers Needed to deliver Caring Hearts Meals. Could you volunteer an hour once a month to deliver meals to some very special people? Our “Connectors look forward to helping you get connected! Our upcoming Second Sunday Connection will be July 8. We look forward to helping you get connected! RightNow Media Testimony "RightNow Media has been a blessing for me in planning our studies for the Closer Walk Sunday School class. Although we have a wonderful DVD/Series Resource Center, it has helped to go to RightNow Media's website and search for future studies. With a computer and hook-up to the DVD player, you will be ready to go. Our class started with RIghtNow Media several weeks ago and initially did a John Ortberg Study, "The Me I Want to Be." We just completed a Chip Ingram study of 8 weeks, "The Invisible War." This last study was interesting, challenging, important, and equipped us to know the enemy and how he operates. If we do not know the enemy, it's easy to be deceived. Please consider this valuable resource; you will be blessed with the options available. Please let me know if you have any questions. I'll try to help you, or find someone who can help. This was a challenge for me when we first started, but I realized it is easier than you can imagine. Sweet blessings." - Maggie Tear To learn more about RightNow Media, please visit www.weddingtonchurch.org/rightnow-media.

Children's Ministries Weddington Christian Preschool . Emily Campbell, Director As we close the 2017-18 preschool year, we pause to offer thanks and praise to our Father God for His blessings and His presence. We also offer our gratitude to the faithful congregation that is Weddington United Methodist Church. We recognize that God assembled the preschool staff and families who would share this school year. We also recognize that He used each of you, and earlier church generations, to provide this space and the critical support that makes a preschool ministry a possibility. Because of God’s power and our gifts, hundreds of children were taught that Jesus loves them, that the Bible is God’s Word, and that He will always hear their prayers. Members of the staff team were able to feel the satisfaction of answering God’s Call on their lives. We will, all together and forever, be a part of the preschool children’s foundations. It is an awesome responsibility. Thank you to our Father God, the amazing 2017-2018 WCP and church staff teams, and each of you for rising to the challenge. It is time to look ahead! Please keep the 2018-2019 preschool ministry year in your prayers. Summer reminders for rising kindergarteners: • Say your prayers every day • Stay strong by hanging from monkey bars and climbing (with a grown up nearby, of course). • Practice using your new writing skills by making a shopping list or sending notes to grandparents, cousins, or friends • Practice using your math knowledge by setting the dinner table, evenly sharing a snack, or making a birthday cake • Make sure mom or dad read to you every day. Ask questions about new words and ideas. • Make mistakes and learn from them. • RUN, swing, play with friends, go swimming, roll in the grass, fly a kite, make sidewalk chalk creations, blow bubbles, and thank God for His beautiful outdoors!

Children’s Ministry . Carolyn Nelson News and Announcements Vacation Bible Camp 2018 What a week we had at this year’s Vacation Bible Camp! Over 560 children learned that Jesus Rescues! The children donated a ton of food to bless Operation Reach Out in Monroe. Each day was a little different for our 5th Grade Missionaries, led by Heather Brown, Niki Leddy, Martha Hall, Sharon Nieland and four youth volunteers. Throughout the week, our campers made crafts for our friends at the Woodridge Assisted Living Center in Monroe, bookmarks for our friends at JAARS, and a special craft for our friends at the Good Shepherd Orphanage in Kenya. They visited White Oak Assisted Living in Waxhaw, where they made crafts, sang songs and enjoyed fellowship with the residents. Our 5th Grade Missionaries also visited the JAARS Center in Waxhaw, where they learned how missionaries share Jesus all around the world. On Friday, they finished off their week of service with a fun day at Sports Connection. We were so thankful to see God blessing this group throughout the week as well as the people they served. Thank you to our 5th graders and our leaders for serving in our community.
