August 11-18, 2019 Each year Weddington UMC celebrates the Great Week of Service, where we focus on a variety of service opportunities concentrated in one week. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved and learn more about the missions that Weddington UMC supports throughout the year. We invite you to join us August 11-18, 2019! Throughout the Great Week of Service, you will have the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the local community with a variety of projects and events. Service opportunities will include making sandwiches to feed the hungry; preparing care boxes to be mailed to our troops; collecting and distributing new shoes, backpacks, and school supplies to a local school in Monroe; and more! The Great Week of Service will begin on Sunday, August 11, with a prayer of blessing during worship, followed by a week of serving together as church family and neighbor. We will close in worship with a prayer of thanksgiving and gratitude on Sunday, August 19. Several of our service projects will require donated items. Even if you can’t make time to serve in person during the Great Week of Service, participating by making a donation of items is a much needed avenue of service. We will collect donations in the weeks leading up to Great Week. See page 3 for details and a list of items needed. We invite you to view the Great Week Missions Schedule on Page 3. We would love to have as much participation as possible. There is no need to sign up, just come ready to serve! More details can be found on the website at www.weddingtonchurch.org/missions. For questions, please contact the church office.

WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore A Discipleship Academy And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (NRSV) 18

“Go and make disciples.” These are Jesus' last words during his earthly ministry. It is the “Great Commission.” “Go and make disciples.” “For God so loves this world” (John 3:16). God loves us so much that he would never give up on us. The story of the Bible is how God created us because he wanted a relationship with us. Even when we turned away from God, God would not turn away from us. God loves us to the point that He would give his life for us. What does God want from us in response? That we would love God and make disciples. A disciple is one who loves and follows Jesus Christ. That is who we are called to be: the people of God who love and follow Jesus Christ. And our task? To lead others to love and follow Jesus Christ. To make disciples. Disciples are not people who simply acknowledge God or have an acquaintance relationship with God. God desires an intimate relationship with us. A relationship that impacts all areas of our lives. A disciple is an apprentice of Jesus Christ. One who follows, learns from, and desires to be like Christ.

Page 2

If the call of the church is to be and to make disciples, then our call is to be a Discipleship Academy. We are in a time of discernment. God is calling us to the next phase or level at Weddington. To be a Discipleship Academy means that we will passionately worship God and we will intentionally grow in our walk with God. We will then share God’s love with others and demonstrate God’s love in our missions. In order to be a Discipleship Academy, we need to pray about the space needed to fulfill this call. In Jesus’ commission, he calls us to teach. The good news is that we are using every possible room and space for discipleship formation. People desire to grow in faith and discipleship. The challenge is we need more space. We need more adult discipleship space, re-purposed youth space, and flexible children’s space. We are praying about a new children’s educational building which will allow us to renovate the current space for adult discipleship. This would allow us to offer so much more. It would also allow greater security for the children’s space. I invite you to join us in a time of prayer and discernment. God has blessed this church in so many ways. God continues to call the church to make disciples for Jesus Christ. And now, we respond. In ministry together, Terry Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Senior Pastor

Missions

Local Missions . Rev. Rocío Ávila-Ramírez

Missions Schedule MONDAY, AUGUST 12 - Canned and Dry Food Drive: 1:00 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall

Union County Crisis Assistance provides local families in financial crisis with life’s basic needs: emergency rent and utility assistance, clothing, and food. They walk with families by giving emotional and educational support to stabilize financial health and move toward self-sufficiency. We financially support this agency as a church, but we also want to be in service by restocking their food pantry through a food drive. Be here on August 12 as we sort, bag, and deliver food donations.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 13 - Operation Sandwich: 1:00 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall

Every second Saturday of the month WUMC volunteers make and deliver 900+ sandwiches to Urban Ministry Center and Union County Shelter to feed our homeless brothers and sisters! This Great Week of Service, we want to introduce you to this ongoing mission opportunity at our church! Join us as we make sandwiches to battle hunger.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14 - Troop Care Boxes: 1:00 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall

We always keep our troops in prayer. In addition to that, we want to send a simple gesture of care for all they do by sending them goodies. Please support this drive. We owe so much to their life-giving service. Let’s serve them as generously as we can this Great Week. Plan to be here to sort donations and pack bags for our troops.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 17 - Back to School Bash: 10:00 a.m. at Benton Heights Elementary

This is our first year celebrating a Back to School Bash with Benton Heights Elementary! We are very excited about continuing and strengthening our relationship with them. Benton is in walking distance of our Monroe campus and most of our Homework Help Ministry children are students there. Our goal is to provide Benton students with new shoes, socks, and backpacks filled with school supplies. Soles4Souls has met us halfway and donated shoes, and Weddington UMC has received a donation to provide the rest of the shoes we’ll need! For Great Week, please donate new back packs, socks, and school supplies, and give us your loving presence and service on August 17. We expect to serve no less than 300 children! We need many hands and loving hearts to welcome, wash little feet, and pray for these beautiful students as they prepare to walk a new school year.

Great Week Donations Over the summer we will be collecting donation items to be used for several of the Great Week

service projects. Drop off days for donations will be on Sundays, July 21, July 28, and August 4 during worship hours. Adult Ministries Adult Ministries . Patsy Sorrell Disciple Bible Study In March 1986, a small group of people gathered in Flower Mound, Texas, to talk about the need to develop a comprehensive Bible study that would do more than just teach facts about the Bible. They wanted to create an opportunity for people to dig deeper and place themselves within the narrative of the Scriptures. They envisioned that it would include a small group of people (much like the group of twelve Jesus gathered) who would have an ongoing conversation with the Bible narrative and with one another to help them grow in faith and discover their personal meaning for life. Disciple Bible Study was the result of those conversations - and it is a discipleship program that has been a foundation of spiritual growth at Weddington Church for many years. You may have noticed that each year we celebrate the growth, relationships, and blessings that have happened through the year-long journey of our Disciple Bible Study groups. In May I had an opportunity to spend some time with our Disciple 1 and Disciple 3 “graduates” as they concluded their studies. The stories they shared about the things they’ve learned, the relationships they’ve formed with one another, and the growth they have experienced reminded me of my own Disciple experience, and how God’s transforming Spirit is at work in and among us as we gather together to grow as disciples of Jesus. While the groups were ready for summer break after 32 weeks, they look forward to gathering again in September to continue their journey. In September we will have several Disciple Bible Study groups beginning a new journey together. Is now the time for you to consider taking Disciple Bible Study? I encourage you to be in prayer this summer about how you will be intentional about growing in your faith in the weeks and months ahead.

Life Group Ministry Are you interested in joining a group where you can connect with others, build friendships, and grow in faith? We have many different types of Life Groups that meet throughout the week and there are several new Life Groups forming during the summer months. If you are interested in getting connected to a new Life Group, please contact Patsy Sorrell at the church office to learn more about these groups and how you can get connected. Women's 20/30's Life Group This new Women's Life Group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. The coordinator for the group is Beth Smith. Couples 20/30's Life Group This new Couple's Life Group is for couples with infants/young children and will begin meeting on Thursday evenings in July. The coordinators of the group are Andrew & Angie Vollenweider. College Summer Life Group Calling all college students! This summer join us for a time of faith, fun, and fellowship. Emily Meredith, who will be a Junior at Wheaton College in Illinois, will lead the group. The group meets at Hemby House at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings. This is a great way to grow in faith and connect with others this summer. Please join us and feel free to invite a friend! NEW! Young Couples Meet & Greet Are you recently married and interested in connecting with other couples for faith and fellowship? Plans for a social gathering this summer are in the works. Page 4

Adult Ministry Leader Appreciation Dinner & Fellowship In June, the Adult Ministry leaders gathered for an evening of fellowship, enjoying a meal together and a time for discussion and feedback. The room was filled with Bible Study, Sunday School, and Life Group leaders; the Women's Ministry Team and Life Group Team leaders; Young Adult and Men's Ministry leaders; prayer warriors, "connectors," and "behind-the-scenes, make-things-happen" people; organizers, people-lovers, administrators, problem-solvers... you get the picture. People who have a heart for serving and discipling. It was a wonderful evening that began with an opportunity for leaders to mix and mingle with one another, enjoy a time of socializing, and make new friends. As a large congregation with several different worship times and locations, our paths may not cross with other Weddington Church family members and so it was a blessing to come together in this way. It also offered an opportunity to express our appreciation to the Adult Ministry leaders for the many different ways they share their passion, time, and gifts, and the meaningful role they play in Weddington Church being a vibrant, Spirit-filled, and loving congregation. The leaders had an opportunity to talk with one another about their ministry, the things they celebrate, and the challenges they experience. We also took time to share a little about how these things impact where God is leading us in the future. It was a blessing to share this time together and we look forward to finding ways to do it more often. I want to express my personal thanks to ALL of you (in every ministry area) who serve and make a difference in the name of Jesus Christ. What you do matters. And I'm so grateful to be on this journey with you! - Patsy "Well done, good and faithful servant!" Matthew 25:23

Weddington Christian Counseling Center Do you wonder if our Counseling Center is making a difference in the lives of others? Have you asked the question, "are people really encountering Jesus there in a way that is transformational?" Recently, I had lunch with Tony Gibson, the counselor from our Counseling Center, and he shared that there have been a few people who have engaged him in conversations about spiritual matters. He was able to share openly with them about Jesus and what it means to make a profession of faith. God used his words and two people trusted Jesus as Savior and became believers. How amazing! God is so at work in our counseling ministry. Praise be to God for what He is doing! -Rev. Ed Briggs

Addiction Awareness Team is now ATLAS Our Addiction Awareness Team has a new name: ATLAS, which stands for Advocates for Those Living with Addiction Stigma. Our mission is to be the voice for those who have been shamed into silence; to erase the stigma of addiction through awareness and education and to offer support to all those affected by addiction. We will be compiling a list of various resources that will be helpful for the person in addiction and the family and friends of this person. We are also looking towards having a panel of speakers who will address the subject of addiction and teenagers on a Sunday evening in October during Sunday Night Youth. Our efforts can and will grow as we gain more people to serve on our team. Please prayerfully consider being a part of what we are doing to combat an addiction epidemic. If you are feeling led by God to join our team, please contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office. Page 7

Children's Ministries Children’s Ministry . Carolyn Nelson Vacation Bible Camp 2019 What a wonderful week we had at this year’s Vacation Bible Camp! Over 500 children learned something new each day about God’s power. Give our volunteers a hand! Thank you to our over 150 youth and volunteers who helped make VBC such a fun week for our children! Our church is blessed to have so many people who care about the children in our community. Thank you for touching lives, changing hearts, and drawing kids and adults closer to God! 5th Grade Missionaries Throughout the week, our 5th Grade Missionaries wrote letters and made crafts for our friends at the Home of the Good Shepherd in Kenya and visited our friends at the JAARS Center in Waxhaw. They had two mission opportunities during the week: Ray of Hope in Waxhaw and a day with the kids at our own Monroe Campus. On Friday, they finished off the week with a fun day at Sports Connection. We were so thankful to see God blessing this group throughout the week as well as the people of our area. Thank you to our 5th graders and our leaders for serving in our community. Our Mission Focuses were both global and local. The children brought in change throughout the week for Wheels for the World, a program through Joni & Friends, which is a non-profit organization that ministers to people with special needs and/ or disabilities around the world. Additionally, Sherri and her husband, Chris, have been members of Weddington Church for 14 years. Their two boys, Jamison and Austin, attended WCP where Sherri served on the WCP Board. "I am honored for this opportunity to serve our church through our wonderful preschool ministry. I am looking forward to working with our amazing preschool staff, building relationships with our parents, and helping our precious children establish a solid foundation of learning and love for God."
