WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.
We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.
Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore
God Breathed: The Book of Acts God breathed. God breathed upon a group of disciples and they became the church. God breathed, and fearful disciples became bold witnesses for Jesus Christ. God breathed, and the good news of Jesus Christ was spread across the world. God breathed, and the great persecutor of the church became the great evangelist of the good news, the gospel. When God breathed, the world was transformed. And now we pray that God will continue to breathe:
“Breathe on me breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do” (Edwin Hatch, 1878).
This summer we will walk with Luke through the book of Acts. Luke wrote both the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. Last summer we walked with Luke through his gospel. This year, we will witness what God is doing and seeks to do through this collection of believers known as the church. We will witness God’s transforming power and ask what is God calling us to be as the church? How are we to live in the name of and on behalf of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As you are traveling, don’t forget that you can listen to sermons online on the website or on our new church podcast. Let us journey together through Acts and discern God’s call for His church at Weddington.

Homework Help Ministry Makes a Difference in Children's Lives We are so excited to celebrate two of our Homework Help children, Kevin and Kimmy, who graduated from the 5th grade this past month from Benton Heights Elementary School. We are so proud of them. Katie Bradshaw, part of our Weddington Children’s Ministry team, attended their graduation and was able to celebrate with them and their families. It also allowed her to listen in on the school principal, Dr. Boatright, and her opening speech. She shared that she was proud of the graduating students. She also shared of her concern for those that follow since only 30% of the school’s students read at grade level. For Katie, that was God calling us into further hands on mission. An opportunity to be God’s love and light in the world as His servants serving others. We’ve asked Dr. Boatright how we can be a part of the school children’s reading development. Ideas such as supporting the teachers with teaching materials, being available for one-on-one reading, and being in constant and intentional conversation with the school principal and teachers during the journey. Please know that we will be discovering more and more what this mission will look like in June. Pray for us as we listen and come back to you to share what we are called to next. Again, we are proud of Kevin and Kimmy for their accomplishment as we are proud of all of our Homework Help children and servant leaders. Thank you to all who have served through our Homework Help ministry at the Monroe campus.
God's Grace for all Nations 10 Year Celebration Conference Weddington UMC had the privilege of hosting the first GGFAN Conference and 10-year Anniversary Celebration on May 1820. GGFAN, God’s Grace For All Nations, is our ministry partner in Kenya under the leadership of the Rev. Simon Mwaura. Rev. Mwaura received his call to reach the unchurched while participating in a meeting at Weddington in Helms Hall. Ten years later, we reconvened in Helms Hall for this conference and celebration. Five representatives from Kenya were with us as well as representatives of various ministry partners from across the United States. We celebrated what God is doing through the ministries with pastors and churches reaching unreached tribes and villages. We celebrated our Pastor’s School which trains these pastors for effective ministry. We celebrated The Home of the Good Shepherd and the progress of these beautiful children who were taken off the streets and are now thriving. One child is now a doctor. Another is an accountant. We also celebrated the beginning of Lil’ Lambs Academy, a private school for the children of the Home of the Good Shepard as well as the region. Education is the key path out of poverty in Kenya. We are grateful to the Weddington congregation for your faithful stewardship and financial support of this vital mission. Lives are changed on behalf of Jesus Christ because of your faithfulness. We are also grateful to the families who hosted our Kenya team and guests during this conference and celebration. To God be the glory.

Fixing It For Christ is an annual local four-day long Christian community service project that is based in the greater Waxhaw area. Volunteers work to make much needed improvements on homes in the community, such as trimming shrubs at the home of an elderly shut-in, roof replacement and repair, painting, and electrical and plumbing repair. If this is of interest to you or anyone you know, please contact Tammy McGee at tmillsmcgee@gmail.com for further information.

All men are welcome! June Meetings and Topics • June 10 - Andy Stanley video "What Makes you Happy?" • June 24 - Speaker Sid Duck Men's Connection Help to Build Handicap Ramp Over the past few weeks, members of Men's Connection have been helping with the construction of a handicap ramp for a member of our church. Habitat for Humanity took on the project and was able to get a grant to cover the cost of the materials with Weddington UMC providing the manpower. The ramp ended up being 100 feet long to be in compliance with the requirements of the American's with Disabilities Act. Fifteen members of the Men's Connection along with two leaders from Habitat for Humanity spent numerous hours over a four-day period to complete the ramp. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this project!

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs News and Announcements GriefShare Grieving the death of a loved one does not take a break for the summer. Therefore, we are offering a six-week GriefShare beginning on Wednesday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hemby House. This short-term experience will give support as various topics related to grief are explored. The facilitators' love and concern combined with the group discussions will no doubt be a blessing for whomever attends. Please contact Sandra McKee at the church office to sign up for GriefShare. Refuse to be a Victim Personal Safety Seminar Bill Jackson, a safety and security expert will be leading a seminar on Technological Security and Personal Protection Devices on Wednesday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 19 of the Sanctuary Building. The technological security presentation will cover phone security, identity theft, cyber fraud, email security, online shopping, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying. Personal protective devices like pepper spray and flashlights are an example of what he will cover on this subject. Plan on attending this very informational event in order to be best prepared to not be a victim. Called "Refuse To Be A Victim," this program provides participants with the knowledge to develop personal safety plans that fit their individual lifestyles, ages, capabilities, and needs, so as to increase the chances to avoid a criminal confrontation. The certified instructor for this program is Bill Jackson. He and his wife Peggy moved to the area five years ago after a career in sales, marketing, and operations management, primarily in the technical glass industry. While "Refuse To Be A Victim" does not deal with firearms in any way, Bill is also a certified instructor for Rifle, Pistol, Home Firearm Safety, as well as being a Chief Range Safety Officer. Retiring Well Seminar Sometimes retirement can be difficult as one seeks to discover his or her new purpose in life. Possibly, an identity crisis may occur leading one to depression or thoughts of suicide. Hunter Marshall, a therapist from One 12 Counseling and church member will be with us on Sunday, June 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hemby House to offer support and guidance as one enters into this season of life. Contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office if you or someone you know is interested in attending this event. Stephen Ministers Great news! Eleven participants will have completed the Stephen Ministers’ Training on Sunday, June 3. The following Stephen Ministers are to be commended for their accomplishments: Jane Estes, Nish Hartman, Maggie Keener, Sina Lackey, Bruce Klink, Amy Moorehead, Georgia Perry, David Pierce, Jim Stump, Claudia Toner, and Carol Wheeler. These Stephen Ministers are now available for care receivers. Please contact our referrals coordinator, Beverly Watkins at 704-562-5040 or Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office if you or someone you know needs the weekly support of a Stephen Minister. Weddington Christian Counseling Center Our Weddington Christian Counseling Center has gotten off to a great start. God is using counselor Tony Gibson to minister to numerous people who are experiencing heartache, anxiety, and depression. There is no shame in getting help. It takes a strong person to admit a need for professional help. Please contact Tony if you are wanting to become healthier and to move further towards healing emotionally and spiritually. Tony can be contacted at 704-814-4220 or at tgibson.wcc@weddingtonchurch.org.

Rising 6th Graders Join Youth at Welcome Night On May 20, we invited the rising 6th graders to join us for a “normal” Sunday night program. We had 34 5th graders come out and it was truly a special evening. Each 5th grader was paired up with an older student who was their “buddy” for the evening. As I watched our youth taking these new kiddos around, introducing them to people, showing them the Youth Center, and making them familiar with our ministry, I was witnessing a true blessing. Our older youth did such an outstanding job embracing the new kids and genuinely trying to help them find our ministry as a place to belong. It was just awesome to see God work throughout the evening and this new group of 5th graders seem pretty excited about being a part of our ministries!

June News and Announcements This summer is going to be a great time for all of us to lean in and go with the God flow! We will kickoff the summer on June 3 with a “Color Night” which will involve activities and games with color chalk, powder, and even a little chalk paint. All will wash off but participants may need to have something to protect seats for their ride back home. Throughout the summer we will continue to meet on Sunday nights and Wednesday evenings for Bible Study. Our summer brochure with details about all that we have planned are available in the Information Centers of the church and a calendar can be found on the website. Everything from our weekly programs to our four summer mission trips promise to be amazing and we are heading into a truly blessed summer! God is good! We are thankful for a congregation that supports us and enables us to do great things! God Bless, Charlie B.

Music & Arts Ministry. Dr. Reginald Houze, Justin Lineberry Opportunity to Serve in Praise & Worship Ministry Worship is a crucial part of our walk in Christian Life. At Weddington UMC, we are always considering how to improve our collective worship experience. We strive to cultivate a ministry dedicated to helping others have an intimate experience with the Living God. Every time we gather to worship each of us has an opportunity to use our talents for His glory. I would like to make you aware of some of the opportunities that you have to serve within the ministry: • Musicians • Vocalists • Sound technician • Video technician • Lighting technician • Audio/Video production • Stage design / décor • Setup and breakdown of worship stage There is an assessment process in place to help us discover where your talents can best fit the opportunities listed above. It is our goal that enough servants will step forward that we can rotate and share the work of our Lord. We hope that you will prayerfully consider serving in ministry. If you are interested in helping, please feel free to contact me at any time. In Christ, Justin Lineberry Page 10
