Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Dear Dad,
came into the room or gave you a call. It was like it made your day to be with us. We knew you always loved us.
As I think about Father’s Day this year, so many of the lessons you taught me come to mind. You were a great father and example for us. I hope that I will pass on to my children many of the things you taught me.
You taught us a work ethic. You taught us that, “if a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right.” You taught us that our work has “our name on it” and that should mean something. You taught us integrity and that if we gave our word, then that was a commitment not to be broken.
You taught me that one’s past does not have to dictate one’s future. When I heard the stories of the things you experienced as a kid, it was hard for me to imagine. I remember you sharing that when some speak of, “The good ole days,” that you never wanted to go back there. Life was hard for you when you were a kid. You worked so hard to provide for your brothers and sisters when you were just a kid yourself. You worked hard to break a cycle of poverty, alcoholism, and abuse. You succeeded. You made sure we never experienced any of those things. I remember how hard you worked to provide for your family so that we “would not be made fun of like you were.” I remember how when we woke up on Sunday mornings, you had always polished our shoes so we would look nice when we went to church. “Wearing good clothes with dirty shoes is like washing your car but not the wheels.” You were so proud of us and taught us that dignity was not attached to income. We were taught to be confident but never arrogant. You taught of love of family. Even though things were rough for you, you never turned your back on your family. One of my very first memories was standing on the pew beside you at Grandpa’s funeral. You cried. When I heard the stories later in my life of what you experienced, I was amazed at how much you loved him anyway. You always worked so hard and such long hours to provide for us. I remember you sharing later how it hurt you to miss so many of our events but that you wanted us to have a better life than you did growing up. You made it up with your grandchildren. They became your pride and joy. You would always light up as any of us Page 2
You taught us to take care of what we had. You grew up with nothing and you taught us to cherish and take care of the blessings we received. You taught us how to keep our cars clean and serviced. We may not have had new cars, but what we had was taken care of. My tools and cables are always in my car just like you taught us. I am the son of a mechanic. You taught us what loving our neighbor was all about. You understood the 2nd Great Commandment better than anyone I have ever known. We would often get frustrated that you were always stopping to help someone. We remember the Statesville newspaper referring to you as, “The Good Samaritan” who rides Highway 115. You always reminded us that we could be the ones needing someone to help us some day. You never took money for helping a neighbor, you always encouraged them just to help someone else. At your receiving and funeral, the stories of your “neighbors” were endless. You touched so many lives. You taught us that our faith and church was vital. Worship and Sunday School were never options for us. You had a quiet faith, but your life testified to it loudly. Your faith was your foundation. You built a legacy on it. You were always so proud of me. But I promise, not nearly as proud as I am of you. I am Curtis Moore’s son. And that says something. Love, Terry

The Book of Jonah June 12 - August 7 Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Location: Room 214/215, Sanctuary Building Leaders: John & Jane Estes
Do you want to know God better and incline your heart to love Him, serve Him, and live for Him? How we spend our time, order our thoughts, and offer our attention really matters. These are the very things that keep us on track or pull us in a different direction than we intend to go. Take time this summer to join other women as we take a closer look at the character of God, and consider how the choices we make shape our own character. You’ll experience the blessing of spending time together as we encourage one another to grow, make a difference, and be intentional with our time, energy and the gifts God has given us. Childcare is available by reservation.
At the end of the day, God is less concerned with what we do for Him than who we are in Him. Few Biblical figures illustrate that truth better than Jonah. Focused on the prophet rather than his prophecy, the story of Jonah gives us a picture of a man on the run due to his own selfish desires. Instead of showing mercy to his enemies, Jonah was determined to keep God’s grace to himself rather than share it with those he considered undeserving. Join us this summer on Wednesday evenings as we take a closer look at Jonah and consider how his story may sometimes reflect our own lives.
To register for either of these new studies, please visit the website at www.weddingtonchurch.org/bible-studies or contact Patsy Sorrell.
Growing in Faith Celebration
Single Adult Ministry
On May 19 we held our Growing in Faith Celebration in Helms Hall as a way to recognize and celebrate the many ways we have individually and as a congregation been intentional in growing in faith throughout the past year. Many hours have been spent reading, praying, preparing, seeking, wrestling, and resting in God's truth and promises, and through it all we have grown as disciples of Jesus Christ. It was fun to come together for a time of food and fellowship as we celebrated Intentionally Growing in Faith!
If you are a single adult interested in growing in faith, building friendships, and serving others, please join us this summer for one of our gatherings. 1st Sunday Lunch The group will meet for lunch the 1st Sunday of every month at 12:15 p.m. at Chili's at Blakeney. Dates are June 2, July 7, and August 4. Summer Bible Study Join us as we study Free of Me - Why Life is Better When It's Not About You by Sharon Hodde Miller. Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in Hemby House Room 1. For updated information, join our private Facebook Group or contact Lisa Sweet through the church office to be added to the email updates.

Summer Support through Our Weddington Christian Counseling Center
Summertime provides an opportunity for us to take a vacation in order to rest, relax, and renew ourselves. Taking time to do so is extremely important for our spiritual, physical, and emotional well being. God calls us to self care so that we can be more so transformed in our relationship with Him. Self care can lead us to evaluate our lives. By asking ourselves, "how well are we really doing?" we may determine that what we are going through is too much for us to handle. If so, then a professional counselor can be of help. There is no shame in reaching out to someone to walk you through your life’s hurts. It is a sign of strength for you to admit that you have a problem and are willing to do something about it. If you are at that place in life, I encourage you to call Tony Gibson at our Weddington Christian Counseling Center to make an appointment. He can be reached at 704-814-4220 or by email at tgibson.wcc@weddingtonchurch.org.
DivorceCare Testimony "The DivorceCare group at Weddington was a blessing to me at an awkward time when I didn’t know how to talk about what I was going through. The facilitators were honest and real. They opened up about their own journeys and were respectful, giving feedback but never being judgmental. They made sure everyone had a chance to talk at every meeting, but they didn’t push when someone didn’t want to share. It helped greatly to have a mixed group of men and women facilitators and participants, so we all got to hear multiple perspectives. Video lessons were well-produced and were the core of discussion. The speakers pointed to God’s plan and not our own. For example: How do you move forward when you don’t know if you want to reconcile…or is there even a chance for that? How do you forgive when everything is still raw? Should you date again…and when? How do you overcome temptations that crop up when you’re stressed? I also made some great friends, which was an unexpected benefit. Of course, we all cried at times, but we did actually get to a point where we could laugh and joke together. I look forward to keeping in touch with my group." - Anonymous
Stephen Ministry Testimony "About a year ago my husband was having serious physical and mental issues. When Rev. Briggs suggested I meet with a Stephen’s Minister I was a little surprised. I was not the one having “problems” and honestly I wasn’t sure I wanted to be “preached” to. Reluctantly I agreed. Meeting with my Stephen’s Minister for the first time was like meeting a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. It was a bit awkward at first. However, after a little “catching up” it was like we have known each other for years. We met at Panera for lunch. It was really casual. Over the past months we have met for breakfast at a local coffee shop. There is never an agenda. We have had very serious and life changing conversations and sometimes we just have small talk. My Stephen’s Minister keeps reminding me to stay true to myself. Sometimes with my busy schedule we cannot always meet. There are many days when I will get a text reminding me to “stay positive” or “be good to yourself.” I didn’t realize what a difference having someone there just for me would make. If you are given the opportunity to meet with a Stephen’s Minister, give it a chance. Everyone can always use another friend." - Anonymous

6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Youth Center is Color Night! We are so excited to kick off the summer and welcome our rising 6th graders with a night of fun, fellowship, and worship! Please come dressed in clothes that can get messed up, and please bring a towel and/or garbage bag with you to keep your car clean on the ride home. We are looking forward to a vibrant night! Bring a friend!
It’s been a wonderfully full month for us all! I’ve heard several people refer to the month of May as “Maycember!” It makes me laugh because yes, May is full of gift giving to teachers, mentors, and graduates! Whew! What an expense! There is so much to celebrate. Our college students spent two weeks in Costa Rica putting in drop ceiling in the sanctuary of the church built several years ago. It’s our first college mission trip and it was super fruitful! We look forward to all June has in store for us: Color Night Summer Kick Off, promotion of rising 6th graders, a mission trip to Florida, Bible study, Sunday nights, and our awesome new Summer Youth Intern, Andy Horne! Please make sure to introduce yourself to Andy! He is discerning a call to ministry and will serve alongside of us this summer. He is a student at UNC Chapel Hill and already has a great reputation among our youth - they love him! We are so blessed as a ministry. God is faithful, God is good, and we are excited! -Rev.
