Monthly Reflections . Reverend Dr. Terry L. Moore Holy Week and Easter March holds one of the most sacred weeks of the Christian Year. The week prior to Easter is known as Holy Week. This is the week where the tremendous working of God through Jesus Christ reaches its climax. It is during Holy Week that many of the key tenets of our faith were firmly established and ratified. On Palm Sunday, we will ride once again with Jesus into Jerusalem. Many tried to warn Jesus that this was a suicide ride. The crowds shouted, “Hosanna!” By the end of the week, we hear the crowd shout, “crucify him!”
We will stand amazed as we hear Jesus, while dying on the cross, beg God to forgive those who are killing him since they do not know what they are doing. Our stomachs will turn when we hear Jesus proclaim that “it is finished” and die. We will swallow hard when we hear a soldier remark, “Surely this was the Son of God.” We will feel lost and hopeless when we hear the sound of the stone being rolled across the entrance of His tomb. On Saturday, we will mourn. Thank God, however, for Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday we will visit the tomb only to find it empty. We will hear rumors and reports that Jesus has risen. We will then encounter the risen Christ for ourselves. We will witness the resurrection. We will hear God proclaim ultimate victory over evil, sin, and death.
On Holy Thursday, we will join with Jesus and the disciples in the Upper Room and witness the sharing of the Lord’s Supper This is the week that makes all the difference in the world. following the celebration of the Passover meal. We will witness the confusion of the disciples as they hear Jesus speak This is the week that makes a difference for all eternity. of his impending death. In ministry together, Over the next 24 hours, we will witness the betrayal of Jesus by one of his own disciples, Judas. We will witness the denial Dr. Terry L. Moore Senior Pastor of Jesus by Peter who vowed never to forsake him. We will hear the sounds of a slap across the face of Jesus. We will hear the sounds of the whip going repeatedly across his back. We will witness the pathetic look of a beaten man with a crown of thorns placed mockingly upon His head. We will hear the crowds shout that they had rather have a murderer released than Jesus as they demand that He be crucified. We will watch the heart of a mother break as she kneels before the cross holding her dying Son.

Monroe Campus Update God continues to grow the ministries at the Monroe Campus. On February 9th we started offering English as a Second Language classes and have had eight students come so far, with minimal advertising in the community. We expect this ministry to grow quickly as the word spreads that we offer the classes. Each week we welcome new children to the Homework Helping ministry. When we began in October we had five students; we now regularly have eighteen. Around Valentine’s Day the children learned the song “Jesus Loves Me” during their Bible story time. Many of the children did not know the song before we taught it to them. We are starting to see how what we do is making a difference in the lives of the people in the community. One of the participants in ESL told us that her children come for homework help. Since they have been coming their grades have improved. Thank you to all the volunteers that make these ministries possible and who allow God to work through them. Volunteer Needs: If you want to get involved at the Monroe Campus please contact Rev. Erin Yow or Kevin Veith kevin67veith@outlook.com. Below are some specific needs. Childcare during English as a Second Language classes: Most of the students in ESL bring their children with them. In order for the parents to fully participate in the classes we are looking for caring volunteers to provide childcare once a month on Tuesday evenings from 7:00- 8:30 p.m. Snacks are needed for both the ESL classes and the Homework Helping ministry. To help with snacks for Homework Help contact Anna-Marie Wright at amursrey@gmail.com. To help with snacks for ESL contact Lisa Keeler at lisa.keeler@weddingtonchurch.org. Homework Helpers: Adult and youth volunteers are needed to help with homework on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:30. We have found that one-on-one help is most effective. The kids really enjoy being around youth volunteers. Contact Deedie Baldwin at deediebaldwin@yahoo.com to volunteer. Vacation Bible School at the Monroe Campus will be July 12th-14th from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. for Kindergarten-5th grade students in the community. Please contact Rev. Erin Yow if you would like to help.
WUMC’s Kenyan Missionary to visit February 29th - March 8th Pastor Simon Mwaura, the General Overseer, of the missions we support in Kenya will be at Weddington UMC February 29th-March 8th. On Saturday, March 5th at 6:30 p.m. we are hosting a dinner in the Youth Center for anyone who wants to come learn more about what is happening with our missions in Kenya (the Home of the Good Shepherd Orphanage, the Pastor’s Training School, and God’s Grace for all Nations). The cost of the dinner is $10 per person. Please RSVP for the meal by Tuesday, March 1st to Lisa Keeler in the church office lisa.keeler@weddingtonchurch.org. Page 3

Love Is Brewing- Adults Night Out The Coffee House and Variety Show was a big success! Everyone who attended had a great time! The desserts, coffee, fellowship and entertainers were wonderful. A big thank you to the Family Care Team, our performers and all who helped behind the scenes to make this event so enjoyable!
Upcoming Programs Support for Domestic Violence Victims We are called by Christ to be His hands and feet to a hurting world. There is such pain and shame in domestic violence. You may wonder how you can help someone and their family who are being abused. Here’s how: prayer and emotional support are key; referrals to professionals are a must. There is a ministry in Monroe called Turning Point that helps woman and children caught in domestic violence. The phone number for Turning Point is 704-283-9150. Safe Alliance in Mecklenburg County serves the same purpose. The number for Safe Alliance is 704-944-0169. They also have a 24 hour Crisis Hot Line number which is 704-332-2513. There is a 1-800 National Domestic Violence Hotline number and that number is 1-800-799-7233. Michelle McDevitt Askew at our Weddington Christian Counseling Center can be of help as well. Her number at the center is 704-814-4220. We can make a difference in stopping domestic violence one person at a time. Join Weddington UMC as we seek to make a difference in the lives of hurting families affected by domestic violence.
DivorceCare Are you or someone you know experiencing separation and divorce? This life event can be painful and one that isn’t meant to be gone through alone. That’s why we offer DivorceCare at Weddington. The first session of DivorceCare for the new year will begin on March 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Youth Center. If you would like more information about DivorceCare or would like to sign up, please contact Sandra McKee at the church office at 704-846-1032 or at sandra.mckee@weddingtonchurch.org. Page 4
Pastoral Care Stephen Ministers Are Available for Support There is no shame in admitting one’s need for assistance. It is an act of strength through Christ when we reach out for support. If you desire support with where you are in life, you may want to consider having a Stephen Minister. Contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office at (704)-846-1032 or by email at ed.briggs@weddingtonchurch.org or Beverly Watkins, our referrals coordinator at (704)-562-5040 or bwatkins83@yahoo.com to see if a Stephen Minister is right for you.
A Testimony from a Stephen Ministry Beneficiary “In the mid-90s I became a Stephen Minister while living in St. Louis. Never did I think I would enlist the help of a Stephen Minister for myself. However, on June 22, 2015 my life changed dramatically. I called Ed and told him I needed help. In no time he had a Stephen Minister for me to meet. She and I met and I knew it was a perfect match. Her experience in the Ministry has helped me understand my new life challenges, be able to sort out problems, and realize rushing through the challenges was not the answer. She’s there for me if and when I need to talk and have a non-judgmental listener. Meeting every other week for tea or lunch with her is something I look forward to doing. I feel blessed she is in my life and feel sure that after I no longer need a Stephen Minister, she will remain a friend. Weddington UMC is blessed to have an active Stephen Ministry program. These loving, caring individuals are here for anyone in need of a confidential listener. Please reach out to them if and when you need help. You’ll be happy you did.” -Diane Martin

Senior High Retreat In February, our Senior High youth had the opportunity to retreat to the coast for a weekend. The cool weather kept us inside for the majority of our time, which allowed everyone to bond as a group. We cooked and dined together, worshiped together, played games together and had intentional time for growth in small groups. Our trip was a real retreat as we all needed the time to unplug and focus on God. The theme for the retreat was Renewal and it fit the purpose of our trip in the most appropriate way! Thank you to all of the youth and volunteers who participated.
