Sunday Worship Beginning at the Monroe Campus We are excited to share that we will be launching worship at our Monroe Campus on Sunday, March 5. Sunday worship services will be at 10:00 a.m. and will be in both Spanish and English. This past Christmas season and its events were a blessing for relationship building with this community. It brought people to attend and share in Wednesday Night Prayer. The community has been asking for worship on Sundays. It is exciting for us as a church to be able to respond to the Call from Christ and the community. We are excited about this new ministry in the Monroe community and especially ask that you keep it in your prayers. You are invited to join us in worship. If you would like to learn more about worship at our Monroe Campus, or any of our mission opportunities there, please contact Rev. Rocio Ă vila-RamĂrez.

Ash Wednesday Our Ash Wednesday Service will be March 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Weddington campus Sanctuary. We invite all to join us as we begin the season of Lent together through our Ash Wednesday Service. Childcare will be available.

WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore The Season of Lent On Wednesday, March 1, we will have an Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary at the Weddington campus. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a forty-day period, not counting Sundays, before Easter. The season of Lent is a time of preparation and repentance. Lent is a time for us to examine our lives carefully as we walk with Jesus once again into Jerusalem where he is to be crucified for our sins on Good Friday. The color for the season of Lent is purple to symbolize repentance as well as celebrate the royalty of God’s anointed one, the Messiah, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The season of Lent is a time to consider all that Jesus gave up for us: Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-8 NRSV)

Page 2

To help us remember how Jesus denied himself, many people “give up” something for the season of Lent. Some give up a favorite food or beverage while others give up certain activities. Others, recognizing all that Jesus “took on” for our salvation, will take on something for the season of Lent. Some will take on a more disciplined prayer and devotional life by adding reading and prayer time to each day. Some will commit to give time to ministry or missions. The main point is that it is a time of spiritual examination. The season of Lent has also been the traditional time for preparing persons for church membership. This is why our confirmation classes are held during the season of Lent with those who are ready to commit their lives to Christ, doing so on Palm Sunday. As we prepare our youth to “confirm” their faith, we are all called to recommit our lives and examine our commitment to Christ and his Church. It is during this time that we are reminded that the Christian life is a life-long process of growth. I invite you to join me during this holy season as we examine our walk with Christ and renew our commitment to Christ. In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Senior Pastor

Building Brothers Building Brothers began in the year 2000. It was an outgrowth of the Promise Keepers men’s movement of the 1990's. Goals: 1. To create a shared experience for men out of which they would be drawn closer to God and become more accountable to each other. 2. To encourage the men who go on the trip to trust God in both their joys and their sorrows. 3. To provide “hands on” assistance to needy people in the name of Jesus Christ. 4. To stimulate a “mission” mentality by focusing the men’s attention on situations and locations out of the ordinary. With this year’s trip planned for April 27-30, the goals of Building Brothers remain unchanged. We will be constructing Habitat for Humanity homes on the Carolina coast. The experience is neither for the arrogant nor for the timid. It is not for the man who thinks he has it all together. It is for the man who in his own imperfections can share the grace of Jesus Christ with his brother. Men who have all the answers or who are unwilling to let others see the real man inside should not come. Building Brothers can be described as a place and time where we labor to help others, but in reality, it is a place and time where God intervenes in the hearts of the men who go. The sense of God’s presence and His pleasure in the ordinary events are an integral part of why we go. A man’s skills may help in the building tasks, but those skills are secondary to the attitudes of his heart in building relationships. The sign-up deadline for this year's trip is March 27. The total cost is $325 and space is limited. We will have a team meeting on Sunday, April 23 at 4:30 p.m. (Location to be determined.) For details, contact Brian King at bking@rodgersbuilders.com, or Lloyd Briggs at labinc1@aol.com.

Costa Rica Mission Trip In January we sent a missionary team of 25 to serve a congregation in Belen, Costa Rica. This was a church that Weddington missionary teams built almost 15 years ago. Even though there were many new faces, it was really cool to reconnect our two congregations. Our 2017 team spent two weeks serving in Belen and, in that time, were able to almost complete new bathrooms for the children's Sunday School classes. These bathrooms included showers so that in the future the church will be able to host teams on site as well as provide shelter for people in need. Although the bathrooms were the main project, we were also able to help build, sand, and stain several new church pews for the growing congregation! Our missionaries also spent a significant amount of time with the people in the community, building relationships and sharing Christ with one another. Each morning and evening members of our team would share testimony during devotional time, which really helped to strengthen relationships with God and each other. Weddington UMC provides yearly opportunities for foreign missions, and if you are someone who feels a "nudge" we encourage you to embrace joining the team next year! It will be an experience that will indescribably draw you closer to God and help you mature as a disciple of Christ! For more information on any missions opportunities, please contact Lisa Keeler or Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez. Page 3

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs Stephen Ministry Testimony - "My Dear Friend" by Bobby Clark "It’s been three years since I was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehreg’s Disease. My wife and I searched for several years to find the right church to feed our spiritual needs. Our neighbors, Rick & Teri Bunch, invited us to join them one Sunday morning for the 9:30 service. We listened to the Praise Team and Rev. Dr. Moore’s sermon. It was that Sunday morning that we both knew we had found our church home. We have been members of Weddington United Methodist Church since February 14, 2016. My wife, Beverly, had heard about Stephen’s Ministry and contacted Rev. Ed Briggs, who’s responsible for Pastoral Care and Stephen’s Ministry, to request someone to visit. I started receiving phone messages and calls from volunteer Barry Partee. At first, I wasn’t ready to meet him because I didn’t feel like I needed this service. Barry didn’t give up and kept attempting to schedule time, but each time I would call to cancel or make excuses. Then one day, Barry called and left a message saying I was the first person he had volunteered for and that 'this wasn’t the way this was supposed to work.' When I heard his message, I was struggling with guilt because I felt I was wasting his time. So finally, I agreed to meet with my dear friend, Barry Partee. Once we met, we found that we had so much in common, starting with living in same neighborhood as kids and attending the same Jr. and Sr. High School. Barry only attended the Sr. High School one year before moving to Tennessee. Over the last few months we have developed a strong relationship and he’s like a brother to me now. We tell each other that we love each other every time we talk. Barry has told me that our relationship has benefited him as much as it has me. I feel so blessed to have him in my life. This experience has drawn me closer to others within the church and increased my faith with God. I’m even attempting to read the entire Bible from start to finish. Barry and I talk about anything that comes to mind, from the Bible to his wife’s favorite candy. We sit on the front porch in rocking chairs watching the birds which is so peaceful. He stays 1 - 3 hours depending on our schedules that day. It always seems like the best timing for his visit especially after one of my quarterly doctor visits. My wife’s inquiry to Stephen’s Ministry and Barry’s persistence to meet has turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me. I thank God every day for the love and the relationships I’ve developed at Weddington UMC, including my “family” in Light of the World Sunday School class. Stephen’s Ministry has truly been a blessing in my life." -Bobby Clark, Stephen Ministry Recipient If you or someone you know would benefit from having a Stephen Minister, please contact Beverly Watkins, the Stephen referral coordinator, at 704-562-5040 or Rev. Ed Briggs.

Food Addiction Support Group Testimony "My bondage to food ended in 2010, through Food Addicts In Recovery Anonymous (FA), the Twelve Steps and my Higher Power. I have lost 150 pounds and kept it off for seven years, but more importantly, the tools of FA have given me support and a community to help me put food in its proper place in my life." Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez Lluvia De Oro (Rain of Gold) is a beautifully written story of a Mexican-American family. The author, Victor Villaseñor, wrote of his family’s journey during the Mexican Revolution. The story carries reader’s imagination through the moments of challenge and love. For me, it connects me with my grandparents and my roots. My grandmother oftentimes shared her own stories as a little girl during the Mexican Revolution with me. I recommend this book as a read that speaks to the value of family and perseverance. You can check out a copy of this Great Book! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center.

Resource Center March Update March 1 marks the beginning of Lent. Stop by Room 212 on Sunday mornings to find these resources and more. Whether it’s family movie night, bedtime story time, mom or dad’s time to unwind, or time for some Christian inspiration, the Resource Center has something special for you. The WUMC RC is located in Room 212 in the Sanctuary Building. It is currently open only on Sunday mornings from 9:15 until 12:15. The Resource Center is volunteer staffed. News and Announcements February was an awesome month full of discipleship. From the launch of Confirmation, to Sunday night youth, to Bible study and Life Groups, we have had a full month of growth! A highlight for us has been youth Bible Study on Wednesday evenings. We have been working through the book of Micah and have had extremely deep weekly conversations. We have asked big questions and have searched Scripture together. It’s been one of the most exciting Bible studies Charlie and I have been a part of. We’d like to invite anyone who is interested in going deeper to join us on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Youth Center.

As we look towards March we anticipate a wonderful Senior High Beach Retreat. We will be heading to Topsail Beach on March 9 and will return on March 12. We intend to truly retreat, seek God first, and grow in our relationships with one another. We will have wonderful worship, deep conversations, and time to play and relax. There is still space and we welcome any who wish to come! Also, please join us for Sunday night youth from 6:30-8:00 p.m. each week. Over the next few weeks we will turn our focus to Lent. We hope to intentionally grow in our faith during this special time so we may be the physical presence of Christ in our world.

He can be heard as the organist in the 2008 film “Doubt.” "I'm grateful to join the music ministry at Weddington United Methodist and to work with a great colleague, Dr. Houze alongside the generous and talented bands, choirs, and singing congregation!" Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Dr. Ridgell, his wife, Soo-Jin, and their three sons John, Joseph, and Jacob, into our community of faith.

We’ll be posting information on our website about the project as the work progresses. Or, for questions, please contact JoAnn Horstman. Page 11
