Join Weddington United Methodist Church this Holy Week and Easter Sunday, as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! We begin our celebration of Holy Week on Palm Sunday (March 25) at regular Sunday worship times, with a procession to commemorate Christ’s entry into Jerusalem at the Weddington Campus. Holy Thursday (March 29) and Good Friday (March 30) services will be held in the Weddington Campus Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. In addition to our regular worship times on Easter morning, we will celebrate with a Sunrise Service at 7:00 a.m. at the cemetery entrance on Providence Road. We will also have Easter Sunday services at our Bonds Grove and Monroe campuses at regular Sunday worship times. We invite you to bring flowers on Easter Sunday to adorn the crosses sponsored by the members of the Lucy Price Circle. For more information on our Easter celebrations, see page 10.
WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.
We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.
Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Holy Week and Easter March holds one of the most sacred weeks of the Christian Year. The week prior to Easter is known as Holy Week. This is the week where the tremendous working of God through Jesus Christ reaches its climax. It is during Holy Week that many of the key tenets of our faith were firmly established and ratified. On Palm Sunday, we will ride once again with Jesus into Jerusalem. Many tried to warn Jesus that this was a suicide ride. The crowds shouted, “Hosanna!” By the end of the week, we hear the crowd shout, “crucify him!” On Holy Thursday, we will join with Jesus and the disciples in the Upper Room and witness the sharing of the Lord’s Supper following the celebration of the Passover meal. We will witness the confusion of the disciples as they hear Jesus speak of his impending death. Over the next 24 hours, we will witness the betrayal of Jesus by one of his own disciples, Judas. We will witness the denial of Jesus by Peter who vowed never to forsake him. We will hear the sounds of a slap across the face of Jesus. We will hear the sounds of the whip going repeatedly across his back. We will witness the pathetic look of a beaten man with a crown of thorns placed mockingly upon His head.
Page 2
We will hear the crowds shout that they had rather have a murderer released than Jesus as they demand that He be crucified. We will watch the heart of a mother break as she kneels before the cross holding her dying Son. We will stand amazed as we hear Jesus, while dying on the cross, beg God to forgive those who are killing him since they do not know what they are doing. Our stomachs will turn when we hear Jesus proclaim that “it is finished” and die. We will swallow hard when we hear a soldier remark, “Surely this was the Son of God.” We will feel lost and hopeless when we hear the sound of the stone being rolled across the entrance of His tomb. On Saturday, we will mourn. Thank God, however, for Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday we will visit the tomb only to find it empty. We will hear rumors and reports that Jesus has risen. We will then encounter the risen Christ for ourselves. We will witness the resurrection. We will hear God proclaim ultimate victory over evil, sin, and death. This is the week that makes all the difference in the world. This is the week that makes a difference for all eternity. In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor

March Local Missions Spotlight - Prison Ministries As we announced last month, throughout the year we will be offering monthly service opportunities that build on what we offer, in partnership with several agencies, during our Great Week of Service. Below, you will find our March opportunities. Safer Communities Ministry Our Lord Jesus calls all of us to go make disciples. A great opportunity exists at Union County Jail. Weekly Bible Studies are organized by Safer Communities Ministry: Eagles Fellowship. Men and women are needed to volunteer to serve and there is a critical need for Spanish speakers. The next orientation for Eagles Fellowship will be at the Union County Jail, Thursday March 15 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Magistrate's Conference Room. No prior preparation is required, only a willingness to go through orientation and a background check. Assignments for volunteers will happen after the orientation and background check are completed. Registration can take place by calling 704-283-3573 or emailing safercommunitiesministry@gmail.com. For questions, contact Chaplain Rev. Vic Weaver at vic.l.weaver@gmail.com or Bill Mayes at mayesbd@gmail.com. House of Pearls is a Christian transitional home in Union County, N.C., nestled in the center of a 100+ acre farm. It is a safe environment for women to heal, restore, and rebuild their lives, embracing and representing the love of Jesus Christ. "The Pearls" learn life skills such as becoming a better communicator, budgeting money, applying for a job, sewing, cooking, etc. The program is designed to help the ladies live life to the fullest as a woman of God. If you are interested in helping clean gutters at the House of Pearls, please contact Lisa Keeler for more information. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls. When he found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all he had and bought it." Matthews 13:45-46 Ground 40 the Restoration House provides a pathway for, "upward mobility with sustainability through accountability." In December, Ground 40 received the wonderful opportunity to continue the efforts of the Restoration House by stepping in and providing a new level of structure and accountability for the men that are in transition. Over the next few weeks, they will continue their renovation process and be looking for an early March relaunch day under the new name, "Ground 40 the Restoration House." In celebration of this new beginning, please join us in taking lunch and having fellowship with the gentleman on Saturday, March 17 at noon. Please contact Lisa Keeler for more information.
Foreign Missions Kenya Missions 2018 This year God’s Grace for all Nations (GGFAN) will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary. The ministry provides spiritual and physical support for the least reached tribes of the Kenyan Samburu and operates a Pastors School that prepares Kenyans, new to ministry, to effectively serve God and the growing number of believers throughout the country. In honor of this milestone WUMC will be hosting Pastor Simon and several of his team, along with US and international donors at a celebration dinner and program at the Family Life Center on Saturday, May 19. Look for more details soon. The Kenya Missions is planning a trip to Nyahururu July 28 to August 10 (dates tentative) to visit the ministries supported by our church. The team will visit with the children at Home of the Good Shepherd, put on Vacation Bible School for hundreds of local youth, feed drought stricken tribes, celebrate the 10th Anniversary of GGFAN, and experience unconditional love. Details of the trip are available from Bradd Blocker (dblocker@carolina.rr.com) and Paula Burnett (paula@wellsfargochampionship.com). Page 3
Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs Personal Safety Information Seminar Wednesdays @ Weddington will be offering a National Crime Prevention seminar on the first Wednesday of each month, beginning on March 7 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 19 of the Sanctuary Building. Come and learn to identify and prevent potentially dangerous situations before they occur – at home, in the mall, while driving, wherever you are. Seminar participants are presented with a variety of crime prevention and personal safety strategies and devices you may integrate into your daily life. Called "Refuse To Be A Victim," the program provides participants with the knowledge to develop personal safety plans that fit their individual lifestyles, age, capabilities and needs, so as to increase the chances to avoid a criminal confrontation. The certified instructor for this program is Bill Jackson. He and his wife Peggy moved to the area five years ago after a career in sales, marketing, and operations management, primarily in the technical glass industry. While "Refuse To Be A Victim" does not deal with firearms in any way, Bill is also a certified instructor for Rifle, Pistol, Home Firearm Safety, as well as being a Chief Range Safety Officer. Caring Heart Dinner We just had our Caring Heart dinner to thank all the volunteers who are a part of our outreach to church members and to people in our community who are homebound. Our evening together was filled with good food, fellowship, and entertainment. A big thank you to the Caring Heart Leadership team, their coordinator Roberta Thompson, and Sandra McKee for making our evening so special. Thank you also to Kim Veith who catered our meal and to Ken Freno and Karl Wolner, the Bald Eagles for their musical entertainment! We are so blessed to have such a caring group of volunteers who are making a difference in the lives of people who could easily be forgotten. Stephen Ministers’ Training Recently 10 people from our congregation began training to become a Stephen minister. We met for a Friday evening and Saturday day retreat in the Hemby House on February 16 and 17 to start the process. It was so neat to see how these men and women become close to each other and God during our time together. I can tell you first hand that we have an amazing group of trainees who are called by God and excited about serving as a Stephen minister. Please keep the following people in your prayers as they continue on their journey to be commissioned a Stephen minister in June: Jane Estes, Nish Hartman, Maggie Keener, Bruce Klink, Sina Lackey, Amy Moorehead, Georgia Perry, Jim Stump, Claudia Toner, and Carol Wheeler. Below is a testimony about the experience from one of our new Stephen Ministers, Carol Wheeler.
Stephen Ministry Testimony "For several years, I have been praying about how to give back to God and this church for all that has been given to me. I discussed this dilemma with my very dear friend, who is also a member here. She suggested some very worthwhile projects, but nothing seemed right. Doctor Moore told us that if we are searching for something, to be still and listen, and God will speak to you. Over a period of time, Stephen Ministry came up time and time again: speaking with my friend, a Ministry Moment during worship, while walking my dog, and my first thoughts when I woke up in the morning. I spoke with Pastor Briggs and decided to give Stephen Ministry a try. There were 12 of us for the Stephen Ministry Training Retreat, and we were all apprehensive. We dove right in with Pastor Briggs and our Lay Leader. It was awesome. We laughed, we cried, we listened to each other's stories, we role played, and yes, there was homework. By the end of the day I was so energized and excited, I didn't want to stop. There is so much to learn. I am looking forward to the next class. I am blessed to be a part of this church and Stephen Ministry. If you are searching, be still and listen." - Carol Wheeler Page 4
Adult Ministries Women's Ministry Lucy Price Circle invites all ladies of Weddington UMC to our March meeting, which will be Tuesday evening, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hemby House. We will have a social time from 6:30 to 7:00 and then the meeting will begin at 7:00. Rev. Amy Hutchison will be our guest speaker. She is our Evangelism Pastor and her duties include the Women’s Ministry. Come and see what she has on her heart to share with us. The Lucy Price Circle is currently the only circle that meets in the evening, so join us and meet with other women, many who work away from the home and are not able to meet during the day. Our circle tries to be mission focused and has projects, activities and events to help House of Pearls (a Christian transition home), our WUMC Monroe Campus Homework Help children, a family with special needs, and other mission-oriented opportunities. Our meetings may have a speaker, an activity and/or a meal. We enjoy eating and having social times, but also want to share the love of Christ by serving others. The Lucy Price Circle normally meets on the second Tuesday evening from September through May. For more information, contact Carolyn Canzonieri at cpc.canzonieri@gmail.com.

Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Rev. Mark Curtis Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis "I remember reading this book years ago in college. When I picked it up again recently, I realized that it was a much more difficult read than I remember. Lewis defies our culture of tweets, texts and sound bites. He engages the reader in a well thoughtout and reasoned approach to faith. His writing can be quite dense at times. I read a chapter, put it down and must think about what I have just read. But the strength in his writing comes through, in the amazing word pictures he uses to break down the ideas of our faith, and in the humility with which he does so. In fact, he begins his articulation of the faith not with scripture, creed, or doctrine. Rather he uses the common everyday experience of a quarrel, an argument between two people, to explore the human condition. Having grown up an atheist himself and come to faith in Christ as an adult (while he was teaching at Oxford nonetheless) Lewis is able to relate his faith journey in a way that so many of the people outside of the church of his day and today can identify with having no or little faith. I believe that this is precisely why this book is considered by many to be one of the greatest apologetics of our time. Lewis is not preachy or judgmental in his tone and writing. Instead he begins with reason and intellect and leads the reader on a journey to faith. There are so many ways this book is relevant to our culture today. It is not an easy read, but it is an important read. I highly recommend C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity as this months Great Book!" -Rev. Mark Curtis You can check out a copy of this Great Book! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 in the Sanctuary Building or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center. The Resource Center is currently open only on Sunday mornings from 9:15 until 12:15 and is volunteer staffed. At Meet Weddington you will enjoy an informal time of fellowship, meet the pastoral and ministry staff, hear an overview of the ministry and mission of the church, and get answers to any questions you may have about Weddington UMC. Meet Weddington Church sessions are usually held on the 4th Sunday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center Multipurpose Room. Our next meeting will be on March 25 at 4:00 p.m.
