Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent, a 40-day period, not counting Sundays, before Easter. Lent is a time for us to examine our lives carefully as we walk with Jesus once again into Jerusalem where he was crucified for our sins on Good Friday. We invite you to join as we come together as one congregation to honor the beginning of Lent at our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Sanctuary. We will not have our Wednesday night children's ministry JAM on Ash Wednesday. Childcare will be available for the service beginning at 6:45 p.m. in the nursery wing. Lent is a time of preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, it traces back to the third century, when Christians observed a 40-day period of fasting to commemorate the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness. Since then, it has evolved and been influenced by various Christian traditions. Within United Methodist circles, Lent is typically understood to be a time of repentance, self-examination, and reflection. It is a season that invites us to (re)focus on our relationship with God… somewhat like an “annual spiritual review.” A time for us to ask, “How is it with my soul?” A time to celebrate the things that are going well and be honest about the things that aren’t. It’s a time to repent and make adjustments. From a discipleship perspective, Lent is a time for a fresh start. This year during Lent, the staff ministry team is reading Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s classic, Life Together. It’s a short book that reads like one of Paul’s letters and offers practical advice on spiritual disciplines, Christian fellowship, and living the Christian life. We invite you to read along with us - or consider another way to spend quality time with God. In the weeks ahead, may we all seek to grow deeper in relationship with the One who loves and cares deeply for us and graciously offers each one of us a fresh start and redeemed life through His Son, Jesus Christ.
WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.
We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.
Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Walking with Jesus Ash Wednesday, March 6, begins a 40 day journey, not counting Sundays, with Jesus to the cross. In the season of Lent, we are reminded of all that Jesus gave up for us out of his amazing love.
This is a great time to begin a devotional life. Take some time to read a passage of scripture each day, to pause to think about what it means to you, and then have a genuine conversation with God.
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Philippians 2:5-8 (NRSV)
Some people give up something for Lent. Each time we reach for something that we have given up, we are reminded of what Christ gave up for us. We are reminded of the sacrifice he made for us. “For God so loved [us] that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16). Others take something on like a Bible study or devotional time, serving the less fortunate and marginalized, or acts of kindness for others.
God took on flesh for us. God experienced being fully human for us. God died for us. Jurgen Moltmann referred to Jesus as the “crucified God.” We follow a crucified God. A God who still has nail scarred hands and feet as a reminder of God’s love for us.
Sometimes we read or hear the story of Jesus dying for us without really thinking through what this means and the heart-breaking sacrifice that was made. The season of Lent is to help us slow down, to examine our lives and repent, and to give thanks to God for this amazing love.
During the season of Lent, we reflect on who we are. It is not easy to be honest with ourselves. To get real with ourselves. When we get real with ourselves, we can get real with God – an honest and genuine relationship.
In ministry together,
5
I invite you to join this walk with Jesus. As Jesus walks to the cross and we walk alongside of him, let’s be honest of why he is having to do this for us. What is my role in leading him to the cross? What are my sins that Jesus is dying for?

Missions Local Missions . Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez. February Hygiene Drive Thank You It is wonderful to respond to the call of sharing the warmth of God with our neighbor. Thank you for wonderful response to the Hygiene Item Drive for the Union County Community Shelter that we held in February. We were able to send several barrels of items to the shelter for their needs; so much so, that we ended up also donating one of our barrels to them because they did not have enough ways to store the items on site without it! God is good and part of that goodness is through you. Thank you for your contribution.
March Opportunities for Service New Ramp for the Monroe Campus We are excited to share that our United Methodist Men at the Weddington campus in partnership with the United Methodist Men at our Monroe campus will be working side-by-side to build a ramp for one of our children from our Monroe campus with Muscular Dystrophy on Saturday, March 23. This will be a great day of work and prayer! Crisis Run Union County Crisis Assistance Ministry will be holding their Annual Crisis Run at Wingate University on Saturday, April 6 at 9:00 a.m. We are happy to serve and run with them, as we do throughout the year in ministry with them. Operation Sandwich On the Second Saturday of each month at 8:00 a.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall, we come together to humbly serve our community in love through Operation Sandwich. Adult Ministries Adult Ministries . Patsy Sorrell The Discipline of Listening Years ago, I came across this poem by James Dillet Freeman that I have often used as a prayer for my church family.
This is God’s house. May we who come here not only find out about God, but find God. May there be beauty in this place, but especially may it be a place where men and women become aware of the beauty in themselves. May this be a place of worship. May this be a place of instruction. May this be a place of singing. May this be a place of prayer. But for us who worship and take instruction and sing and pray, may this always be a place of inner stillness, where we may listen and hear when God speaks. May whoever ministers here minister in love. May whoever teaches here teach truth. May whoever serves here serve pleasantly. May everyone come into this house in expectation and go with thanksgiving, and may anyone who comes needing help go feeling blessed. May this be such a house that Jesus Christ— or any stranger, even one of the least — would feel in it that He was with friends. Amen.
As you read, there may be something that stands out to you; and what resonates with you may be different than what resonates with others. What stands out most to me as we enter the season of Lent is this… “may [Weddington Church] always be a place of inner stillness, where we may listen and hear when God speaks.” After all, don’t we yearn to hear God? Inner stillness is not something that typically comes naturally to us, and it’s especially challenging in a world that is fast-paced and cluttered with noise and activity. And while I’m certain that the discipline of “being still” has many personal benefits, from a spiritual perspective stillness helps to create time and space for us to give God our attention…to listen to what God has to say, and find clarity in how God seeks to guide us in life. Listening… it’s not as easy as we’d like it to be. And you’d think that with all the listening we do, we’d be good at it. Statistics show that’s not the case. Research suggests that most people remember somewhere between 25-50% of what they hear. Isn’t that startling! If true, it means that when you’re talking to someone, they’re paying attention to less than half of what you’re saying. Wow! And, the same statistics apply if you turn the tables. You only capture a fraction of what someone else is saying…unless you’ve disciplined yourself to be a good listener. By becoming a better listener and practicing the spiritual discipline of “inner stillness” not only can we improve our human relationships – surely it will impact our relationship with God as we take time to listen to what He has to say. And I’m confident that 100% of what God has to share with us is not only important and helpful to our day-to-day lives but… the very thing we all yearn for – whether we realize it or not. So, as we enter the season of Lent…may we “be still” and listen… so that we may hear God’s whisper and find comfort in His presence and guidance.
2nd Sunday Life Group Connection The 2nd Sunday of each month a member of our Life Group Ministry Team is available in the Narthex and near the coffee stations in the Family Life Center before and after each worship service to answer questions and help you find a group that will be a good fit. 2nd Sunday Connection will be held on March 10. Ashton, the Assistant Director, will be updating us with all the new developments at HOP, and we will also hear testimonies. This will be a great opportunity to learn about their wonderful Christian ministry of helping women get their lives on track and hear how women’s lives have literally and spiritually been changed. On March 29, ladies of the circle will visit HOP for another Fifth Friday Social. We will be making plans for that at the March meeting. This is becoming a tradition for months that have five Fridays, when Lucy Price joins the HOP for an evening of socializing, eating, and experiencing Christian fellowship. It is always such a blessing. The Lucy Price Circle is currently the only circle that normally meets in the evening. Our circle tries to be mission focused and has projects, activities, and events to help House of Pearls (a Christian transition home), our WUMC Monroe Campus Homework Help children, a family with special needs, and other mission oriented opportunities. Our meetings may have a speaker, an activity and/or a meal. We enjoy eating and having social times, but also want to share the love of Christ by serving others. Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs News and Announcements Weddington Christian Counseling Center The season of Lent is fast approaching. During Lent, we prepare ourselves spiritually for 40 days as we anticipate our celebration of Holy Week and Easter. Possibly during this time of preparation, God will speak to us about some of the challenges and heartache we have in our lives. Revelations from God can lead us to realize we need some extra outside professional support. Tony Gibson, the counselor at our Weddington Christian Counseling Center can be of help as you seek to address what is weighing you down. When we move towards being a healthier person emotionally, we will at the same time deepen ourselves spiritually. What better time is there for this growth than during Lent! If you are interested in contacting Tony, please call him at 704-814-4220 or email him at tgibson.wcc@weddingtnchurch.org. TLC (Tender Loving Care) Volunteers Are you interested in making a difference in the life of someone who is recovering from surgery or is facing an ongoing struggle with his or her health? Do you enjoy being an encouragement to people who need to be reminded that they are loved and supported by God and our church? If your answer to these questions is yes, then we would love for you to prayerfully consider delivering prayer boxes and prayer blankets on behalf of the TLC ministry. The time commitment would be once a month. Please contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office to be a part of this ministry which is truly being the hands and feet of Jesus to a hurting world. Domestic Violence Support Group Jessica Moser will be leading a 12-week domestic violence support group beginning on Monday, March 4 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. For more information about this group and for the location, please contact the church office.
Stephen Ministry Testimony "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners." Isaiah 61:1 "In my thirties I came to understand Christianity is meant to heal and restore all of us. We are all in need of healing, we all feel like prisoners in darkness at times. I felt led to Stephen Ministry due to the healing and restoration God was doing in my life. I found Stephen Ministry to be an authentic way for those in need (all of us) to walk through their troubles with a brother or sister in Christ. You were never meant to walk alone." - Tom Coleman, Stephen Minister

Sew Many Blessing Life Group Sew Many Blessings Life Group is a sewing/quilting group which began in December of 2016 by Robin Turner and Debbie Ashline. It was their desire to gather others from Weddington United Methodist Church and the community to share their skills and make items for charities. Since it’s inception, the group has completed projects for Weddington Church including items such as home-made Easter baskets for the Monroe Campus and Prayer Quilts for the TLC ministry. In addition, they have made dresses, shorts, and pillowcases for the children at the Home of the Good Shepherd Orphanage Kenya ministries. Last summer sewing machines, supplies, and fabric were gathered to send to the orphanage; kits for drawstring backpacks were prepared and Cindy Westover taught the children to sew during the summer trip. Thus, the children were taught a skill that may be useful in the future for jobs or just making their own clothes. Sew Many Blessings group has provided items for outside agencies as well. Some of these projects include padded seat belt covers for cancer patients, warm mittens for the homeless, lap blankets and walker bags for residents at nursing homes, neck coolers for our military overseas, and Isolet covers for the Neonatal Unit at Atrium Health’s Union Campus in Monroe. Current projects include Quilts of Valor blocks/quilts for local Veterans, baby items, and zipper bags for various charities. We meet the first Saturday of each month at Bond’s Grove Campus Fellowship Hall. We share our creating skills with each other and enjoy great fellowship while making items for various ministries of Weddington United Methodist Church and charity groups in Union and Mecklenberg counties. We consider ourselves to be a “mission based” Life Group, and enjoy utilizing our sewing/quilting skills for the benefit of others. "I am a foster mom in Monroe. I wanted to say thank you. We picked up our foster twin babies from the Monroe Hospital the other day. We received two beautiful blankets donated from your church and the Sew Many Blessings group. Again thank you." - Anonymous Page 10
