We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Contagious Christians There is so much concern and conversation over the coronavirus. And rightfully so. As a church, we are monitoring the situation with our medical professionals as well as other leaders.

We then tend to pass things to the people with whom we are in proximity: the people at our work, our schools, our neighborhood, etc. Do they know we test positive for Christ? Has our influence led them to test positive for Christ?

All this conversation has raised some thoughts for me. What can the church learn from a virus? Or from the flu? Viruses and the flu spread across the world. We are such an interconnected world these days. What happens in one area will have an impact in another area.

The word, pandemic, derives from the Greek word, pandēmos. Pan means “all.” Dēmos means “people.” A pandemic, then, impacts all people. Imagine if we could spread Christianity to the point it is pandemic! That is our calling. Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NRSV)

How can we become contagious Christians where we spread Christ across our communities and across our world? When someone has an “infectious laugh,” we cannot help but laugh with them. If someone has an “infectious faith,” we cannot help but catch it as well. It would seem that the first step to being a contagious Christian is to confirm that we have it. It is hard to infect someone with something we do not have ourselves. As we are journeying through Lent, it is a great opportunity for us to confirm that we have a good case of Christian faith. That we test positive for Christ. Lent is a reminder to have a spiritual exam. I remember when our children were small. One of them would get sick and then we would get ready. It was going to pass from one of us to the next until we all had it. When we are close to someone, we tend to pass the good and the bad to them. As a contagious Christian, the first place to pass our faith to another is in our homes with the people we love the most. Sharing Christ with our family is the greatest gift we could give them. Page 2

I pray that we, as individual Christians and together as the church, are infectious with our Lord Jesus Christ. That we spread the love and grace of Christ wherever we go. A pandemic of Christianity could heal our world. When [Jesus] had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22 NRSV) Terry Rev. Dr. Terry Moore, Senior Pastor

Joy of the World - Waltonwood Ministry 4

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (ESV)

"Did you know that the Lord wants you to be joyful during your time here on earth? You notice that I didn't use the word happy, since happiness is based on external influences that affect feelings and can change in a matter of minutes. What I'm talking about is being joyful internally no matter what negative external things come your way (not easy to do). But with God, all things are possible. My mother passed away when she was only 67 years young. I continued visiting her sisters (my aunts) in my hometown of Camden, SC. During my trips, I stayed with my Aunt Peggy (my mom's youngest sister). I loved going with her to Sunday School and worship service at our home church. Her class had originally been the newlywed class in the 1930's. As the years passed, this class grew older together, eventually becoming the senior adult class. They lacked group leaders and depended on other church members for Bible lessons. Eventually, God lead me to volunteer as one of the Bible leaders. I began traveling Camden once a month to see my Aunt Peggy and led her Sunday School class. What a joy it was to visit her and her class as many of them were the parents of my schoolmates who I knew growing up. I was excited each weekend that I visited them. However, during that time I encountered a very personal problem that touched my innermost, vulnerable place. My solution to address my problem was to stop visiting my aunt and her class monthly. It broke my heart. I missed seeing my aunt and leading her class. But God knew my heart and my desires. Fast forward years... I joined WUMC in 2013. God knew that I still had a void in my heart for seniors and connected me with Pastor Ed. I began helping him with the independent living adults at Waltonwood Retirement Community in Bible study. Now I've been leading this group for five years and love every minute of time I spend with these wonderful believers. I've learned so much from them through their testimonies and life experiences. We pray together, share one another's problems, and love one another...truly we are sisters in Christ Jesus. So God remembered the desires of my heart and has given them back to me, plus more. You may ask why I have a smile on my face? I can say truthfully that it is because I have THE JOY OF THE LORD IN MY HEART. And the Bible bunch at Waltonwood is part of my joy. I pray that you find JOY and let it shine for others to see." -Barb Bennett Page 7

Worship during the Sr. High Winter Retreat

February flew by! We had an awesome Senior High Youth Retreat to Topsail Island. We loved every bit of our time together. We have our upcoming Middle School Retreat to Mt. Shepherd Retreat Center at the end of this month. We are excited to spend time retreating from our normal busy schedules, and instead pause for worship and time together. Thank you for supporting our youth. God is moving in their lives. Weddington Christian Preschool . Sherri Martinez, Director The March Mission of supporting the Union County Animal Shelter aligns with the preschool’s March theme: Animals. “A good ‘person’ is concerned for the welfare of his animals…”, Proverbs 12:10. In Genesis 1:24 – 26, we learn that God made the animals before He made Adam and Eve. God shares that His plan is for man to be the master (or caretaker) of animals. Throughout March children will learn to be respectful (and sometimes cautious) caretakers of all animals. Our domestic pets rely on us for survival. We are thankful for organizations like the Union County Animal Shelter that helps find homes for displaced pets. Items we will be collecting: • Puppy and Dog Food • Kitten and Cat Food • Leashes and collars • Dog and Cat Toys

• Dawn Dish Detergent • Newspapers • Grocery bags (paper) • New or gently used towels (hand or bath size)

Church Announcements Meet Weddington Sessions

Wednesdays @ Weddington

Interested in becoming a part of the Weddington UMC family? As your clergy, program staff, and fellow Christians, it will be our privilege to grow and serve together. We request that anyone interested in membership attend one of our Meet Weddington Church sessions.

Wednesdays evenings are a wonderful time of fellowship and ministry at Weddington Church, and there’s something for everyone!

At Meet Weddington you will enjoy an informal time of fellowship, meet the pastoral and ministry staff, hear an overview of the ministry and mission of the church, and get answers to any questions you may have about Weddington UMC. Free childcare is provided in the Sanctuary building.

Fellowship meals are served from 5:00-6:45 p.m. in the Family Life Center (September-May). The cost per meal is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children, with a maximum of $20.00 per family. Reservations are not required, and while we hope you stay to join us for a time of discipleship, that is not required either.

Meet Weddington Church sessions are typically held monthly. The next Meet Weddington will be on March 22 at 5:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Family Life Center. To learn more, contact Rev. Amy Hutchison.

We’re glad to come together mid-week as a church family to break bread together, support one another in life and faith, and continue to build faith-filled friendships.

Silent Witness Items

March Menu

Due to popular demand, we are rolling out a pre-order for items not previously available to the entire church as well as a pre-order for a new item. These help us be a silent witness throughout our community so that we can show people how much we love our church!

• March 4 - Meatloaf, mashed potatoes & gravy, green bean amandine, rolls, and assorted cookies • March 11 - Chicken fettuccine alfredo, breadsticks, and Italian cookies • March 18 - Beef bourguignon (burgundy) over egg noodles, rolls, and banana pudding • March 25 - Deconstructed chicken & rice, steamed and buttered broccoli, biscuits, and assorted cookies

These items include Coffee Tumblers ($15 suggested donation), Padfolios ($20 suggested donation), and Stainless Steel Water Bottles ($15 suggested donation). Due to these being higher priced items, we are taking pre-orders to make sure we order enough (but not too many!) to be good stewards of the Weddington UMC funds. Pre-orders will be open through March via the church website.
