Humbly Serving in Love Fair Sunday, May 7

Our Mission: To fulfill our call to be the physical presence of Jesus Christ... by worshipping God with passion, intentionally growing in faith, proclaiming the gospel with grace, and humbly serving in love.

The Apostle Paul in First Corinthians 12 emphasizes the role of spiritual gifts. God has gifted us with varying abilities and talents. He calls us to come together as the body of Christ to live out our gifts. Since everyone is not gifted the same way, it takes us all to come together to effectively be the hands and feet of Jesus. We are having a Humbly Serving in Love Fair on Sunday, May 7 from 10:30-11:00 a.m. in Helms Hall and then from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Family Life Center. This fair will give you an opportunity to discern your spiritual gifting and to discover ways you may be able to serve in ministry. Come join us for an enjoyable event of fellowship as we seek to “Humbly Serve in Love Together. Please contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office for more information.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Mother's Day Mother’s Day is a special day. Each year we pause to think about our mothers and those who have shaped our lives. We give thanks to God and share memories as we think about our mothers who have gone before us. We give thanks to God and reach out in love to our mothers who are in our lives today. We give thanks to God and celebrate those, who like mothers, have shaped us. We give thanks to God and celebrate those who are mothers, or like mothers, to the ones we love. I was blessed to be raised by a Christian mother. I am the fourth of five children. Our mother made sure we had everything we needed growing up. She made sure we had supplies for school, insisted that we do our homework, and try our best. She led us to church and volunteered in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, youth programs, and other events because she knew our walk with Jesus Christ was vital. I was blessed to have a Christian grandmother. She was a pistol and the epitome of a country grandma. She had no filter. If she thought it, she said it. She loved us and spoiled us. We would ride our bicycles the 1.5 miles to her house. She would be ready for us with fried apple pies or something else amazing. Every Sunday, she joined our family for Sunday lunch. There are so many memories and stories of Grandma.

Page 2

And, I am blessed to be married to a Christian mother. She loves our kids and they have never doubted it. She was involved in their education from preschool through, well, today. She still proofreads papers for all of us. She insisted they be active in their walk with Jesus Christ. Being the wife of the pastor, she had all the responsibility for our children on Sundays. She made sure they were up, dressed, and ready for Sunday School and worship. She volunteered to lead Vacation Bible School and was always helping in some way throughout their children and youth ministries. They know they can count on Mom. Most all of us have been blessed by a mother or someone like a mother in our lives. Mother’s Day is a time to pause, remember, give thanks to God, and share our gratitude with those who have shaped us. Take some intentional time to be with family. And, let them know you love them and thank God for them. Thanks Mom! In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Senior Pastor

News and Announcements The Great Week of Service will be August 13-20, 2017! We will begin with a commissioning on August 13 during Sunday Worship Service, spend a full week in service to God, our neighbors and community, and close with a prayer of gratitude and joy on August 20 also during Sunday worship. We invite you to serve with love and an open heart. We look forward to having service projects especially with local agencies we serve year round such as Operation Reach Out, the community of our Monroe Campus, Union County Community Shelter, and others. English as a Second Language (ESL) Ministry Our Adult English as a Second Language Ministry at our Monroe Campus is entering another end of school year! This year, a second level class was added doubling our student attendance with an average of 5-6 students per class. This also offered an opportunity for advancement in development. In addition, the childcare that we offer has been a huge blessing for our students. An average of 16 children and teens are in childcare each week as their parents are learning from one of our excellent volunteer English teachers. Teaching parents English helps keep families closer considering that their children are primarily English speaking Americans. Thank you to all who have supported these families as they assimilate into a new language and culture. Outdoor Family Movie Night at our Monroe Campus! On Friday, June 2, we will enjoy watching "Finding Dory" at 6:30 p.m. at our Monroe Campus parking lot. This will provide an opportunity for healthy family time and to help us continue building relationships with our community for the purpose of Christ’s Kingdom. Monroe Campus Service Opportunity We are hosting a Dental Clinic on Saturday, June 10, at our Monroe Campus, from 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. If you are in the dental field and would like to volunteer your services (we are in special need of a dentist) please contact Lisa Keeler at the church front office. Operation Sandwich will take place in the Fellowship Hall on May 13. Please come join us from 9:00-10:00 a.m. to help prepare sandwiches for our homeless neighbors. For more information on any of these service opportunities, or others, please contact the church office or email Lisa Keeler or Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez.

Save the Date: Monroe Campus Vacation Bible Camp July 10-13 We are bringing VBC to the Monroe campus for the second time! On Monday, July 10, we will open our doors to the children who live in the neighborhoods surrounding our Monroe campus. This VBC team is so excited to share the light and show God’s love to these children. Many volunteers are needed! Contact Carolyn Nelson to learn more. VBS at the Monroe Campus in 2016 Page 3

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs News and Announcements Monroe Campus Reach Out on May 20 at 10:00 a.m. You are invited to join us as we seek to reach out to the senior adults who live near our Monroe Campus. We will be visiting seniors with a goody basket as a way to let them know of our love and support for them. Each senior will receive a card ahead of time to inform them of our plans. If you would like to be a part of this meaningful outreach, please contact Rev. Ed Briggs.

Waltonwood Pianist A pianist is needed for the 4:00 p.m. Sunday worship service at the Waltonwood Assisted Living residence. This servant in ministry would be needed once or twice a month. Please let Rev. Ed Briggs know if you feel called to be a part of this very vital ministry.

Stephen Ministry Testimony "I found out about the Stephen Ministry last Spring and I have been meeting with a Stephen Minister since then. I was and continue to face a difficult time in my life. I am so thankful and blessed to have had the opportunity to spend time with a Stephen Minister. She has been helping me by spending time with me, caring about me, listening to me, and praying with me. I will always remember and be thankful for this uplifting experience." -Anonymous

Adult Ministries Women's Ministry Susanna Wesley Circle would like to cordially invite you to our last meeting until fall on Friday, May 5 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Helms Hall. We are really excited about this upcoming meeting! We have invited many of the organizations that benefit from the consignment sale donations to share how the sale has helped the mission of their organization. This meeting will be a great opportunity to mingle with these groups and find out how we can continue in a relationship with them. We also think it is a great opportunity for everyone to get a better understanding of how the sale benefits many in need. All of the work of the consignment sale goes to great use in our community! If you have never attended SWC, please come! This is the perfect opportunity to meet new people and find out more about the sale. We would love to have you. Childcare is available in the Nursery wing at Weddington United Methodist Church from 9:15-11:45 a.m. Feel free to bring a friend to share in the great fellowship that SWC has to offer. Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Eugene H. Peterson's, Eat This Book: A Conversation in the Art of Spiritual Reading William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company

Bible study is vital. This is why I often teach Disciple Bible Study. This is the “Word of God for the people of God.” Many of us struggle reading the Bible. Albert Outler, a biblical scholar and theologian, reminds us that we often read the Bible the wrong way. It is less a book “about God” and more a “revelation of God” (Disciple 1 video). Eugene Peterson is the biblical scholar who gave us the paraphrase of the Bible known as The Message. He also wrote Eat This Book: A Conversation in the Art of Spiritual Reading. Spiritual reading of scripture leads us to participate in God’s continuing story and receive inspiration from God through the sacred text. Peterson states, “The biblical story invites us as participants into something larger than our sin-defined needs, into something truer than our culture-stunted ambitions. We enter these stories and recognize ourselves as participants, whether willing or unwilling, in the life of God” (p41). He continues, “If we have not entered this text as participants, we aren’t going to understand what is going on. This text cannot be understood by watching it from the bleachers – or even from expensive box seats. We are in on it” (p69). “Bible verses are not fortune cookies to be broken open at random” (Peterson, p101). The Bible is a sacred gift from God. Eat This Book gives us guidance and encouragement as we engage this word from God. Peterson reminds us, “Readers become what they read” (p20). You can check out a copy of this Great Book! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center.

It has been an incredible month in the life of Weddington UMC youth. On the evening of Sunday, April 9 we confirmed 27 youth in a very special Confirmation Service where we were honored to have Bishop Paul Leeland assist and preach. It was a beautiful service filled with love, family, and commitment to Christ and the church. Bishop Leeland’s message to the Confirmands was a message driven by John Wesley’s 3 General Rules: 1. Do no harm. 2. Do all the good you can. 3. Attend to the ordinances of God.

Additionally, we were equally honored to have Cassidy McFadden share a message of joy with the confirmands. We have also celebrated many baptisms and rejoiced in the love God has for us all. On Sunday, April 30 at the 11:00 a.m. service confirmed 17 more youth in their faith. We are grateful for all of the love, support, teaching, and encouragement of the clergy, parents, and Tonya Tapp. It is awesome to see so many youth growing in their faith. Our prayer is for their love of God to be one that grows and deepens through their lives.

Completion of the video system is next including new projectors, new screens and additional cameras. To see photo updates, please check our Instagram and Facebook pages.
