Pentecost: The Holy Spirit and the Church Sunday, May 20, 2018 Following the resurrection, Jesus the Christ called the disciples to be His witnesses at home, across the region, and to the ends of the earth. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 (NRSV) On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was breathed upon the disciples and the church was empowered to fulfill its mission. The gospel of the crucified and risen Christ was proclaimed. Thousands gave their lives to Christ, and the church was launched. The gospel was heard and scattered across the world. 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 11b In our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." Acts 2:8, 11b (NRSV) The church is still called to be witnesses for Jesus Christ at home, across the region, and to the ends of the earth. On Pentecost Sunday, May 20, we will begin a series on the Book of Acts looking at the call and ministry of the Church empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Rev. Simon Mwaura from Nyahururu, Kenya, will be with us to celebrate God’s continued outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the work of God’s church across the world. We look forward to worshipping together as we celebrate this amazing gift of God’s Holy Spirit and the body of Christ in ministry together.
Kenya Conference On May 18-20, we will be hosting a conference and 10-year celebration with representatives of the various donors and supporters of the GGFAN (God’s Grace for All Nations) mission in Kenya with the Rev. Simon Mwaura and members of his leadership team. A celebration dinner will be held on Saturday evening, May 19. The Rev. Mwaura, his team, and many of our guests will be with us for worship on Pentecost, May 20. We invite you to welcome our brothers and sisters in Christ from around our country and the world as we worship and serve God together.
WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.
We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.
Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Thanks Mom We teach all the time. People are always watching. They hear our words. They see our actions. Sometimes we are teaching without even realizing it. Thinking of Mother’s Day, I was reminded of some of the teaching by my mother. Some of her teaching was direct. “Good job! I am so proud of you.” That was affirmative teaching. “Terry Lynn Moore!” If I heard my full name, I knew it would not be a positive teaching moment. If she was so frustrated that she had to go through the roll call of my sibling’s names before she got to mine, it was not going to be pretty. Some of her teaching was very indirect. Mom always taught us openly that going to church and growing in our faith was important. Mom was also an adult Sunday School teacher when I was a child. She would study and prepare throughout the week for her lesson. Each Saturday evening, she would go into the dining room, pull the door, sit at the table, and teach her lesson out loud to the chairs. We had very spiritual chairs. She did not force us to listen to her lesson. As a matter of fact, she did not say much about it at all. We just knew what was happening each week. We knew that she took teaching the faith very seriously. She would study and prepare. She would practice. Tomorrow, she would be helping someone learn more about God and grow in their faith. This was important to her. We learned the lesson without her saying a word.
When we would get in the car to go on vacation, Mom would pause and say a quick prayer asking God to keep us safe. She did not make a big deal out of it. We just watched and learned. When camping at the beach each summer, we would go to the campground worship service on Sunday mornings. Even on vacation, we worshipped God. Worship, it’s what Christians do. We learned the lesson. And on the rare occasion when going to a church or service was not an option, Mom would share a quick devotion or lesson with us. It was still the Lord’s Day, no matter where we were. Worship, it’s what Christians do. We teach all the time. Sometimes we use words. Sometimes we do not even realize that others are paying attention. Sometimes we teach by what we do. Sometimes we teach by what we do not do. The question is, what are we teaching? I was blessed by a mother and father who taught me so much. Sometimes, they used words. Most of the time, I just watched. "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you." 2 Timothy 1:5 (NRSV) In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor

May Local Missions Spotlight - Operation Reach Out Fans Needed for Operation Reach Out's "Operation Breeze" This month of Great Year of Service, we are invited to work together as a community of faith and help meet a common challenge for families in need during HOT summer days. Partnered with Operation Reach Out, we will host a fan collection on Sunday, May 20 from 2:00-7:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Fellowship Hall at our Weddington Campus. Operation Reach Out will have a box truck in the parking lot where you can drop off fans. It may seem surprising that many folks in need, and especially the elderly, do not have access to or a budget for air conditioning comfort in their homes or apartments. For this reason, we are partnering with Operation Reach Out to get fans out to those families. We suggest the standard box fan is ideal. Thank you for helping us offer some relief from humid hot days and nights this summer for neighbors in need in our community. For questions, please contact Lisa Keeler, Missions Coordinator at the church office. LoveINC is a faith-based non-profit that functions as a clearinghouse to connect poor, elderly, and disabled in the community with Christian volunteers from churches that want to love, serve, grow a relationship with and move those in need to self-sufficiency in the name of Christ. To view a full list of volunteer opportunities, please visit www.weddingtonchurch.org/missions. To learn more please visit www.loveinc-charlotte.org or email information@loveinc-charlotte.org.
God's Grace for all Nations 10 Year Celebration Dinner When: Saturday May 19, 6:00-8:30 p.m. Where: Weddington UMC Youth Center This month, supporters from all over the world will be coming to Weddington UMC to celebrate GGFAN’s 10th Anniversary. We invite you to join us for an evening of reflection and celebration as Pastor Simon and his leadership team describe the 10-year journey that has changed the lives of so many Kenyans. Please join us in the Youth Center for an intimate, relaxing dinner followed by the program and dessert. There will be plenty of time to mingle and make new friends, put faces to names, and prepare ourselves for the next 10 years of humbly serving in love. We hope you will join us for this exciting event. Seating for dinner is limited so please RSVP early. To RSVP to Saturday's dinner, please go to www.weddingtonchurch.org/ggfan-dinner. Please reserve your spot for dinner by Monday, May 7. For questions, please contact Curt Burnett at curtis.burnett@outlook.com.

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs News and Announcements Personal Safety Information Seminar Wednesdays @ Weddington will be offering a National Crime Prevention seminar on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in Room 19 of the Sanctuary Building. Come and learn to identify and prevent potentially dangerous situations before they occur – at home, in the mall, while driving, wherever you are. Seminar participants are presented with a variety of crime prevention and personal safety strategies and devices you may integrate into your daily life. Called "Refuse To Be A Victim," the program provides participants with the knowledge to develop personal safety plans that fit their individual lifestyles, ages, capabilities, and needs, so as to increase the chances to avoid a criminal confrontation. The certified instructor for this program is Bill Jackson. He and his wife Peggy moved to the area five years ago after a career in sales, marketing, and operations management, primarily in the technical glass industry. While "Refuse To Be A Victim" does not deal with firearms in any way, Bill is also a certified instructor for Rifle, Pistol, Home Firearm Safety, as well as being a Chief Range Safety Officer. Adult Ministries Women's Ministry Susanna Wesley Circle (SWC) Please join the Susanna Wesley Circle (SWC) for our end of the year social on Friday, May 4, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Helms Hall. This is our last meeting of the year and we hope to see you there. We will have delicious food and fellowship! For this meeting, we thought it would be fun to do a "Home Decor" Swap. We did a swap a couple of years ago and it was so much fun! All you have to do is bring two “used” home decor items that you no longer need or love (candles, artwork, planters, vases, holiday dish or decoration). The home decor that you bring will be displayed on a table and we will all go shopping and bring home two new items to spice up our homes! And if you never have attended SWC, please come! This is the perfect opportunity to meet new people, go shopping and have fun since it is our last meeting of the year. We would love to have you. Childcare is available in the Nursery wing from 9:15-11:45 a.m. Feel free to bring a friend to share in the great fellowship that SWC has to offer. Again, we look forward to seeing many of you there! If you have any questions, please contact secretaryswc@gmail.com.
Lucy Price Circle will meet on Tuesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Lynda McPherson for a cookout. Luther will grill hamburgers for the ladies and we will enjoy an evening of socializing with each other. Ladies on our mailing list will receive meeting details, including the location. Although there will be some summer events, this will be the last regular meeting before taking a summer break. The Lucy Price Circle is currently the only circle that meets in the evening, so join us and meet with other women, many who work away from the home and are not able to meet during the day. Our circle tries to be mission focused and has projects, activities, and events to help House of Pearls (a Christian transition home), our WUMC Monroe Campus Homework Help children, a family with special needs, and other mission oriented opportunities. Our meetings may have a speaker, an activity and/or a meal. We enjoy eating and having social times, but also want to share the love of Christ by serving others. The Lucy Price Circle normally meets on the second Tuesday evening from September through May. For more information, contact Carolyn Canzonieri at cpc.canzonieri@gmail.com. Mary Martha Circle will meet on Friday, May 4, at Trio Restaurant. This will be our last meeting until September. We will gather at 12:00 p.m. at the restaurant. If you would like to attend and have not already signed up, please contact either Mary Revels at revelsmary@carolina.rr.com or Tommie Craig at tommiecraig@carolina.rr.com. Also, let us know if you need directions or wish to carpool. Come and learn how our circle will be helping the children in Kenya at the orphanage, The Home of the Good Shepherd. Hope you can join us!

Women's Bible Study Testimony "The 'Jesus Sistas' Bible Study group started about a year and a half ago. I had belonged to a Tuesday night Women's Bible Study group for several years when I felt God calling me to lead a particular study called, "Entrusted." Unfortunately, this study was not available on our church campus, but I still felt called by God to lead this study, so I opened my house for anyone who wanted to join. We started with a small group of six ladies who met on Thursday nights and were blessed by this study! As we neared the end of the study, the Jesus Sistas wanted to continue meeting in our home, so we prayed about the next study, listened to God, and kept moving forward! We are now on our fifth Bible study together! Some of our original members are still with us, and some new members have joined us! As a group, we have reached out to serve the community by serving a meal at the Union County Shelter, providing a worship service at The Charlotte Rescue Mission, and participating in the "Not In My City" campaign to help fight human trafficking. My Jesus Sistas served as my prayer team when I traveled to Kenya. Studying God's Word together and encouraging one another to put it into action has been our mission! I am so grateful for each of my Jesus Sista's and pray God continues to bless us as we seek Him!" -Sharon McFadden

Weddington Christian Academy . Adell Keen, Principal WCA Volunteers at Samaritan's Feet On Friday, April 13 our Middle School students volunteered at Samaritan’s Feet of Charlotte. The students spent time preparing and boxing shoes for those individuals in the U.S and other countries who cannot afford to purchase shoes. These pairs of shoes can be the only barrier preventing these underprivileged people from contracting diseases or gaining entrance to schools. Thank you Middle Schoolers for showing we are “many parts, to serve one body”.

May News and Announcements April was a blast for our youth! We all celebrated the risen Christ on Easter Sunday with our families. It was an awesome and beautiful reminder. We are set free from sin and death, Hallelujah! In April, we also hosted our very first “Mystery Night” which was a complete mind engaging event. Charlie Brown developed a series of puzzles the youth had to work through in order to retrieve the needed puzzle pieces to solve the mystery. It was hilarious to watch the youth try to figure out what all these pieces meant. They thought out of the box and they worked together to solve as many of the puzzles as they could. Some may have left with a headache, but it’s no mystery: they had a great time! We wrapped up April with our Middle School retreat. We carried over the theme of “Salt and Light” from our Senior High retreat. We are thankful for all of God’s good work. The Holy Spirit continues to show up in the lives of our youth and adults over and over again. Page 8
As we embrace May we would like to invite you to join us as we walk with youth in their faith. You don’t have to be cool enough. You don’t have to know everything about the Bible. All you need is a dedicated and active faith in Jesus Christ and a heart for walking with students as they journey through middle and high school. You might be the exact person God is calling to be a part of changing a kid’s life. Don’t hesitate. Don’t make excuses. Say yes and dive on in! We are waiting for you! New "Hangout" Spot So what are those seven posts sticking out of the ground behind the Youth Center used for? It’s a new place to hangout... literally! An Eagle Scout project by Chase Anderson has provided us a place to hang a lot of hammocks in the “back yard” and it’s quite perfect! In April we held our first Wednesday Night Bible Study out there. It was awesome!

A Note from Rev. Mark Curtis Dear Friends, It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as one of your pastors over the last seven years. As your Teaching Pastor, I have come to clarify my call within a call. I am ordained to Word Order and Sacrament. I am passionate about teaching. You have been instrumental in helping me to live into this calling. You have been patient with me. You have been willing to allow me to grow and discover new gifts and graces. I am proud of what we have accomplished together. We have seen our Life Group Ministry, our Bible Studies, and our Sunday Morning Classes grow. I hope that through God’s grace you have grown in your own life of discipleship. I pray that the ministries of this church will continue to grow as the church moves forward. As I am appointed to a new church, I will take the lessons we have learned together and apply them with my new community of faith. My family and I are doing well. I am deeply grateful for the love support and encouragement you have blessed me and my family with throughout our time here. You have reminded me and shown me that our faith is about relationships, with God and one another. My family and I are doing very well. I am spending my leave enjoying our kid’s activities and sports, as well as preparing for the transition and move. You may also see me from time to time walking our beloved black lab, Lady. I pray that you receive this blessing from Paul’s letter to the Romans: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Mark Page 11
