Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Dating Some of the best advice I ever received was to “Spend your time with the people who will cry at your funeral.” These are wise words. Sometimes we get so busy with other things and trying to please other people that we neglect spending quality time with the people who mean the most to us. God has blessed us by placing special people in our lives. This is a gift to be cherished. Dating is so important. Not only with a romantic interest, but with anyone who is special in our lives. When we are dating, we put energy into the relationship. We make plans and look forward to being together. With time, we often begin to take each other for granted. When working with couples, I sometimes hear that they “try” to date, but just cannot find the time with the responsibility for the kids, work, etc. I challenge them, however, that if they were single and just met someone they were interested in, they would find the time. They would talk and work the calendars to find someway to spend a little time together. We have time. The challenge is how we prioritize our use of it. So couples, you need to date – at least once a month. When our children were little we had “Daddy Dates” or “Mom Dates.” Each of us tried to have some one-to-one time with each of our children. My daughter recently sent me an image from Chick-fil-A of a father and young daughter having a “Daddy Date.” She asked, “Am I too old for this?” with a smiley face emoji. I replied that she would never be too old for a “Daddy Date.” One-to-one time with the significant people in our lives is vital no matter what the age. So parents, you need to have a “Daddy Date” or a “Mom Date.” Page 2
Some of the most sacred times I had with my father before he died were trips together to the doctor. Time alone in the car gave great time for sharing stories and memories. We would stop for breakfast or lunch and just talk. I cried at his funeral and am so grateful to God for the time we shared together. May is the month of Mother’s Day. June is the month of Father’s Day. Two months in a row to establish the habit of dating - spending time with the people who will cry at your funeral. Relationships are sacred gifts. Cherish them. Nurture them. Action Item: ___ Plan quality one-to-one time with the people I love and who love me.
In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Senior Pastor
God is faithful in providing support to us, even in our most trying times... This month, one year ago, I sat in a small empty Sanctuary. I admired the dark-polished wood of the railing encircling the altar, the soft, yet brilliant, amber light streaming through the stained-glass windows. I listened to the mockingbird singing in the courtyard just outside those windows. I considered the history of this place – a small Methodist Church built in 1874 in the village of Marvin, North Carolina. Even now, looking much the same as that very first day the doors were opened. Horses and carriages would have lined the country road out front, dropping off children who were, no doubt, dreading the hard, wooden pews and a long-winded sermon. Women wearing the fashionable dresses of that day folding their parasols as they stepped inside, men sporting their dark suits, ties, and top hats, music from the pipe organ drifting outside and the church bell ringing, welcoming all to worship. For 145 years this tiny Sanctuary served as a place of worship for its congregants, some of whom are buried in the cemetery among the azaleas and dogwoods behind the church. At present, this small church could never contain the scores of congregants who call Weddington United Methodist their church home, those who now instead attend several other much larger campuses. But what of this little country church, still stately, dignified, and beautiful? What did God have in mind for this special haven? How might He continue to work here in promoting love, care, and concern for His people? The Lord answered these questions on April 11, 2018, when the first client of a newly-established Weddington Christian Counseling Center walked through those same Sanctuary doors. On that day, a vision of the WUMC Lead Pastoral staff came to fruition after many months of prayer and intentional consideration. Our Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Terry Moore, along with our Minister of Pastoral Care, Rev. Ed Briggs, held a long-time desire to build and establish a counseling ministry that would provide professional behavioral health care and emotional support to the WUMC church body, as well as to serve as an outreach to other churches, ministries, and the community-at-large. The Weddington Christian Counseling Center officially opened its doors on Resurrection Sunday, April 1, 2018. In the months since, the Center has provided over 700 session hours to those in need of therapeutic counsel and supportive intervention. The center has served a broad range of ages over the year, from as young as 9 to as young (yes, young!) as 77 years. The center is actively providing professional therapeutic services for individuals, couples, and families working through many of life’s challenges, sorrows, and transitions. In addition to our congregants here at Weddington, we are also serving clients from twenty other churches and ministries, coming from eleven towns surrounding Marvin in North and South Carolina. In addition to professional counsel, we have a trained entourage of Stephen Ministers who assist in covering the center’s day-to-day needs and who provide additional supportive help and counsel as requested. Each day I walk through the doors of the Marvin campus, I marvel at how the Lord has answered those questions of a year ago. Many emotions have been expressed, tears have been shed, joys have been shared, relationships healed, and renewal of faith established. A century-and-a-half after laying the first cornerstone, God knew that this small country parish would someday become a place of therapeutic counsel and spiritual healing. It has not lost its significance in this modern day and contemporary society. I am grateful to be a part of the ministry at Weddington United Methodist Church. I remain humbled that the Lord allows me to work here each day. I hold such an affinity for all with whom I am privileged to walk, even if only for a short time, along their incredible life journey. - Tony Gibson, LMFT

Wednesday Evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m. Family Life Center Multipurpose Room May 1 - June 19 Ann White
How often do you like to enjoy soaking up the sun? On an early Spring day, we enjoy just being outside and in the warmth of the sun. Imagine yourself in the tabernacle that Moses erected in the wilderness – it’s all dark inside except for the lampstand with its seven lights set so that they are shining forward. Imagine yourself enjoying the light of the lamps. The light represents the presence of God, so by sitting there enjoying that light you are in a sense “basking in the presence of God.” But how do we get to enter into that situation? How do we get that close to God? Exodus ends with the comment that even Moses wasn’t able to go into that presence. The Psalmist tells us that the one who has clean hands and a pure heart can come in. The book of Leviticus is all about God graciously making a way for the Israelites to come into His presence. It is about a Holy God living in the midst of the people. Leader Ann White, a seasoned Bible translator, shares how her interest in Leviticus was piqued by a question from a fellow Bible translator who didn’t want to title the book “About Levi” in his language. So, he asked for suggestions – the consensus was this: “Living with a Holy God.” Come and learn what Leviticus has to tell us. We will also set those instructions into the larger context of salvation history. God graciously invited the Israelites to enjoy His presence, just as he graciously invites us to live with Him. To register for this or any of our current Bible studies, please visit www.weddingtonchurch.org/bible-studies or contact Patsy Sorrell at the church office.

Lake Junaluska is nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains and offers a relaxing setting with spacious grounds that include a beautiful 200-acre lake, walking trails, kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals, 16 peaceful gardens and nearby shopping and restaurants. She will invite us to look below the surface of life and faith issues and leave with hope and a renewed sense of God’s heart. Expect to laugh. Expect to dig deep. Expect to untangle from things that tangle us up, and leave renewed… and transformed. Come away, be still, and discover the freedom and transformation that only Jesus can bring about… trading brokenness for joy, comparison for contentment, and longing for peace. We are also thankful to have celebrated our Confirmands. Their growing faith and dedication to Christ is encouraging. It was a pleasure to be joined by our District Superintendent, Rev. 2019 National Day of Prayer - Thursday, May 2 The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, the law was unanimously amended by both the House and the Senate and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on Thursday, May 5, 1988, designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer. The theme for 2019 is Love One Another and comes from the words of Jesus in John 13:34: "Love one another. Just as I have loved you." The National Day of Prayer website shares these words of Dr. Ronnie Floyd, "There is no great movement of God that has ever occurred that does not begin with the extraordinary prayer of God's people." Wherever you find yourself on Thursday, May 2, set aside some time to join others across the nation in praying... for our nation, for our friends and foes, for those who look, act and think like us and those who don't, and for ourselves - that we may love one another, in the same way that Jesus has shown us how to love.
