Stewardship - Growing Our Faith Through Generosity Service to Others on Behalf of Jesus Christ Weddington United Methodist Church is vitally active in ministry on our campuses, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful in our community, and around the world. stewards of God’s grace in all its forms.” There are examples of faithful members 1 Peter 4:10 serving by leading, teaching, praying, helping, and expressing mercy through ministries serving all ages and circumstances. Whether with children or adults, here on one of our campuses or across the ocean, there is a place for you to serve others by using the spiritual gifts God has given you.

Generosity Our Biblical understanding of Christian financial stewardship expresses giving as a sign of gratitude and faithfulness to God and to whom we have been called to be. Every financial gift given to Weddington Church supports our many ministries and missions. We are thankful for your support and are committed to the faithful stewardship of your generosity. November 12, 2017 has been set aside as Celebration Sunday. This month you will receive a packet of information celebrating the many ministries and missions of Weddington United Methodist Church. Please take the opportunity to explore the stories that are shared and to prayerfully consider how you will respond through your offerings of service and financial support during the coming year. If you have any questions about the ministries and missions of Weddington UMC or financial stewardship, please don’t hesitate to contact JoAnn Horstman, Church Administrator, at 704-846-1032 or joann.horstman@weddingtonchurch.org.

“But, who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you; all we are doing is returning to you that which we have received from your generous hand.” 1 Chronicles 29:14

WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Make a Difference I want to make a difference. I want to have an impact on our world. I want to do something that will make this world a better place. I want to be involved in something that changes people’s lives. I want to do something for the kingdom of God. Something that will offer Jesus Christ to a hurting world. You do! Every time we are faithful in our tithes and offerings, we make a difference. Lives are changed. Hundreds of children gather in classrooms and learn about Jesus Christ. Through your faithfulness, you provide the room, the Bible, and the material. A teenager who is struggling with temptation sits with a youth minister that you provide for them with each offering you make. Someone who has been diagnosed is terrified by the news and you provide a pastor to pray with them and remind them of the presence of God in their lives. A young man has been looking for answers. He finds a Life Group meeting in a facility your offerings make possible and shares his struggles. He is led to faith in Jesus Christ and experiences the joy of God’s grace. His life is changed. Thanks be to God. You do! Children who had been living on the streets terrified at every sound in the night and searching the landfill for food during the day now have a home in Kenya where food is on their table and where they lie down in a bed knowing that someone is there to protect and love them. In Bulgaria, the poorest country in the European Union, you provide a church and a pastor to care for people in a community struggling to survive. In Romania, you provide one of only three United Methodist Pastors in the country to share the good news of Jesus Christ and establish a church. In Costa Rica, you provide a building team and materials to build facilities and relationships on behalf of Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God. Page 2

You do! A woman has been beaten by her husband, her children are in tears, and they flee for safety. They arrive at Turning Point, a ministry supported by the offerings you make to your church, and they are protected, loved, and receive help to start a new life. A single mother is doing everything she can do but it is not enough. She goes in tears to Crisis Assistance. She is embraced and coached by loving people who help her create a plan for survival. She leaves with food provided by your offerings and the knowledge that her kids will not be hungry. Thanks be to God. You do! The stories go on and on. You do make a difference! By God’s grace and your faithful response in your tithes and offerings, lives are changed. There are many more people out there who need to encounter Christ through our ministry. God is at work. But God needs us to be faithful to our call with the blessings we have received and in an act of worship and gratitude, offer our tithes and offerings so the church, the body of Christ, can continue to make that difference. My fear? Who is the person whose life will not be changed if we don’t? What difference will that make? I invite you to prayerfully consider making a difference in the name of and on behalf of Jesus Christ. God calls us to offer our tithe in worship and thanksgiving so that lives can be changed by His grace. God has blessed us in so many ways. In faithful response, let’s make a difference. Thanks be to God. In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor

Local Mission Opportunities Thanksgiving Feast at Monroe Campus We are looking forward to sitting at the table with Christ this Thanksgiving. We will once again celebrate a Thanksgiving Feast with our Monroe Campus children on November 16 at 3:30 p.m. Last year, around 30 local children smiled with joy as they ate turkey, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and corn, abundantly! For some of the children, it was their very first Thanksgiving dinner as they and their families adapt to our American celebrations. This year, we expect twice as many children! A special thank you to the Sunday school classes that provide for this feast. Operation Christmas Child and Angel Tree Ministries As Christmas nears, the need in our community and around the world becomes a little greater as families try to have a little something for their children to celebrate in the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Of course, as Christians, we must help our brothers and sisters throughout the year. However, let us reach a little deeper during this holy season. Maybe take one more angel off the Angel Tree than you did last year. The Union County Christmas Bureau does an amazing job of making the process of getting the gifts that those in our church donate, to those in need in our community, very simple. If you would like to offer your generosity to children in need at the global level, pick up an Operation Christmas Child box or two, and put a smile on the face of a child in a place far, far away. Room In The Inn One of the most caring ways to help during this season of giving is through the experience of walking with our brothers and sisters as they journey the precarious path of homelessness. At Room In The Inn, which is offered at our Hemby House twice a month during the months of December through March, we house and feed some of the homeless from Mecklenburg County. You can prepare and serve a meal, help set-up/clean-up, bring breakfast, and, most importantly, share fellowship so that you may bear witness to the Parable of the Good Samaritan in which Jesus teaches us that anyone in need is our brother. As we prepare our Hemby House to host a warm bed and meal for our homeless neighbors through Urban Ministry, we extend to you the need for travel size men and women’s deodorants, toothbrushes, and toothpastes. If you are able to participate and cook dinner or breakfast, be part of the clean-up crew, or welcome folks as they stay, please contact Lisa Keeler. Please keep an eye out in the church bulletins and eNews to find detailed information about each of these ministries. For questions or to volunteer with any of our local missions, please contact Lisa Keeler, Missions Coordinator, at the church office.

Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - Dr. Reginald Houze The Me I Want to Be by John Ortberg I was first introduced to John Ortberg's book The Me I Want to Be - Becoming God's Best Version of You during a sermon I heard at Germantown United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. The book has seen several re-printings, including a teen edition with curriculum resources. In the book, Ortberg seeks to answer the question of why spiritual growth seems difficult in the face of the idea that God has a perfect vision for our lives. Ortberg aligns the ideas of spiritual growth and becoming more "you." Often, we see these concepts as being at odds with one another... that is, our inherent sinful natures keep us from becoming more like Christ. Indeed, Ortberg seeks to show how God’s perfect vision for us starts with His promise. All those who trust in God “will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7-8). The book further asserts that our individual lives are not our project to make and perfect, but our lives are God's project. Ortberg urges us to recognize our brokenness, allow God to be the project manager, and follow His directions. In the opening chapters, Ortberg explores such topics as why God made us and then gives thoughts on discovering how we grow as individuals. Later chapters explore the avoidance of temptation, the development of deeper relationships, and how we might honor God in our daily work. Ortberg's summation is that "When you flourish, you become more you. You become more that person God had in mind when he thought you up. You don't just become holier. You become you-ier... God wants to redeem you, not exchange you." - Dr. Reginald M. Houze You can check out a copy of this Great Book! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 in the Sanctuary Building or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center. The Resource Center is currently open only on Sunday mornings from 9:15 until 12:15 and is volunteer staffed. If you are interested in helping in this ministry, please contact resourcecenter@weddingtonchurch.org.

Upcoming Bible Studies and Advent Studies Upcoming Bible Studies Moses: In the Footsteps of the Reluctant Prophet by Adam Hamilton. Begins November 1, led by Rev. Mark Curtis. Wednesday morning 9:30 a.m. in the Bonds Grove Campus Fellowship Hall and Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Weddington Campus Fellowship Hall. Books available through Amazon, CBD, and Cokesbury. The Explicit Gospel by Matt Chandler. Starting Monday, October 30 - December 4 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Louise Padfield’s home. You know you know it… but then again, maybe you don’t. Even if you go to church, it doesn’t mean that you are being exposed to the gospel explicitly. Sure, most people talk about Jesus, and about being good and avoiding bad, but the gospel message simply isn’t there—at least not in its specificity and its fullness. Inspired by the needs of both the over-churched and the unchurched, and bolstered by the common neglect of the explicit gospel within Christianity, popular pastor Matt Chandler writes to remind us what is of first and utmost importance—the gospel. Member workbooks will be available at our first meeting for $13.00 each. Contact Louise Padfield at lpadfield8@gmail.com or 704-618-0554 to register. “I’ve always wanted to ask…” Wednesday, November 1 at 6:30 p.m. we will be addressing a list of compiled FAQ's that Christians and non-Christians have about Christ, God, and religion. If you have a question you’d like addressed anonymously, e-mail Rev. Amy Hutchison. All are invited.

The Faith of a Mockingbird Beginning November 8 with a viewing of To Kill A Mockingbird, this will be a 5-week study looking at faith through the eyes of To Kill A Mockingbird. Weddington Christian Preschool . Emily Campbell, Director News and Announcements WCP Says Thank You! In the spirit of thanksgiving and gratitude, Weddington Christian Preschool would like to sincerely thank you, the congregation, for your love and support of this ministry serving our youngest members. We appreciate you! “Every time (we) think of you, (we) give thanks to God.” Philippians 1:3 November Ministry Our November Ministry is “The Gift of Giving”. Our Heavenly Father gave us a wonderful model in generosity when “He gave His only Son…” (John 3:16). In an effort to ensure everyone can enjoy the gift of giving, we are collecting new parent/household friendly gifts a child may give to a special adult of their choosing. (Examples: candles, pretty mugs, gloves, smell good toiletries.) The collection will be delivered to our Monroe Mission campus where the children in that community will be able to “shop” for a gift to give. You can help spread the joy by prayer, a thoughtful gift, or volunteering on shopping day! A WCP Weddington Campus Tour will be offered on Wednesday, November 1 and Wednesday November 8. Please R.S.V.P. to 704-849-7628 or wcp@weddingtonchurch.org to attend, and please be sure to leave a contact phone number. Tours will start at the main WUMC sanctuary entrance near the fountain at 2:00 p.m. To respect the privacy and security of children and families enrolled at WCP, tours will be offered on the Bonds Grove campus by appointment only. Please call 704-843-6785 or email BGCPS@weddingtonchurch.org. 2017-2018 WCP Calendar Dates are available on the website. Weddington Christian Academy . Adell Keen, Principal News and Announcements Congratulations to our Cross-Country Team! They had a very impressive first year in our new sports conference. Thank you for representing WCA! The WCA students and staff will be collecting shoeboxes for the annual Operation Christmas Child campaign this month. This is one of the many service projects our students participate in throughout the year. On a monthly basis, our students collect a donation for the Good Shepherd Orphanage in Kenya. On the last Monday of each month, students have N.U.T.S. Day (no uniforms to school). On this day, they are encouraged to bring a donation for the orphanage. This month, we will begin practices and games for our Basketball Teams. The students really enjoy representing our school through sports. We have also started various afterschool activities including basketball clinics, soccer clinics, art club and a cooking class. On November 21, we will have our annual Thanksgiving Feast and Choral Program. We will celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with our WCA families with a delicious meal prepared by Chef Kim & Mrs. Peggy. Our music teacher, Mrs. Francis, will direct the students in a choral program of holiday songs. It’s a wonderful way to start the holiday season.

October Reflections Life is good in Youth Ministry these days! We’ve been very pleased by the number of new folks who have started to become regulars at our Sunday night gatherings. It’s been great to watch some of the students who are more integrated into our ministry reach out to the new folks and invite them to be a part of all the wonderful things we offer. At Bible Study, we’ve been working our way through the Gospel of John and it’s been amazing to take a deeper look into Jesus’ life. Our students are full of questions, full of wonder, and are definitely seeking God.

October was a month of journeying deeper in our faith. Charlie and I are grateful for the support of this church, for the ways God is moving in the lives of our youth, and for all that is to come in the last two months of this year. We look forward to our Fall Retreat November 10-12 at Look Up Lodge. Please join us in praying for this retreat and for the youth and adults who are going! -Rev. Meredith Hinton Page 9

RightNow Media This past month we launched our partnership with RightNow Media! RightNow Media is a huge online Christian video library that aims to provide powerful and useful Biblical resources for every age! These videos can be used at home with your family, or in your small groups and classes. Our hope is that this resource will help every member of our congregation learn and grow in their faith and relationship with Jesus Christ. Learn more about RightNow Media and create your FREE account today at www.weddingtonchurch.org/rightnow-media. Once you have made a profile, we invite you to check out our Weddington UMC library filled with recommended content from our pastors. We also encourage you to download the RightNow Media app on your smart phone, tablet, and smart TV for access on the go.
