FALL FUN FEST
WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.
We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.
Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore Five Expectations of Discipleship Years ago when I was pastoring the Oak Ridge United Methodist Church, I would be regularly invited to the Rotary Club in Greensboro as a guest. I found it interesting how clearly they laid out the expectations of a Rotarian. As I was driving home from one of the events I was struck by how unashamedly they defined their expectations for membership and how hesitant the church would often be to name the expectations of membership and discipleship. In each church I have served since, we have discussed the expectations for discipleship. What does it mean to be a member of God’s church, the Body of Christ? What are the expectations? We have named five expectations of discipleship or membership. We share these at our monthly orientation meetings, known as Meet Weddington. It is helpful for each of us to be reminded periodically. 1. Worship – When in town and healthy, we worship God together. Worship is a part of who we are as Christians. The people of God join together in the house of God to worship and honor God (Psalm 150). Worship is about community: the Christian community gathers to worship, to pray together, and to grow in our faith. 2. Grow – We become a part of a Life Group, Bible study, class, or group to grow in faith and our walk with Jesus Christ. Jesus went to the synagogue “as was His custom” (Luke 4:16). Synagogue was the place where the scripture would be read and discussed. It was a place of learning, discerning, and growing in the knowledge and love of God and neighbor. We join with other Christians to grow together. 3. Mission – We are called to love our neighbors. We encourage every Christian to be involved in some mission emphasis at least annually. Jesus had a special place in His heart for the poor, marginalized, outcast, and lost. Page 2
We are called to be the hands, feet, and voice of Jesus Christ in our world. We offer so many opportunities to love and serve others and believe this is vital in our Christian walk. 4. Talents and Abilities – All of us have talents and abilities that can be used for the glory of God. Some have the gift of teaching or leading. Others have the gift of administration. Some are gifted in finance and can help the church to be faithful stewards of the gifts offered for ministry and mission. Some have the gift of compassion. Some are gifted in human resources and help us care for our ministry teams. Some love to send cards to those who are sick. Some feel called to reach out to the unchurched. Some have the gift of hospitality. The list goes on. All of us, yes all of us, have some God-given gift, talent, or ability that we can use for the glory of God. 5. Proportional Giving with the Goal of Tithing – Stewardship is a spiritual discipline and an act of worship. Our offering is a recognition that everything we have and are is a gift to us from God. We are so blessed. We are called by God to offer our first-fruits and our tithe to God for the work of His kingdom (Leviticus 27:30-33; Deuteronomy 14:22-29). Our offering is an act of gratitude, an act of obedience, and an act of covenant with God. The church is then called to be faithful stewards of that offering, using it in ministry and mission in the name of and on behalf of our Lord Jesus Christ. I encourage each of us to reflect on these five expectations. Are we living the life of Christian discipleship? God loves us so much and proved that by giving His only begotten Son to live among us to teach of God’s love and kingdom, to die that we might be forgiven, and to rise that we may have eternal life. God has promised to always be with us. Discipleship is our faithful response to this God who “so loves the world” (John 3:16). In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Moore, Senior Pastor
Missions . Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez. News and Announcements August was an inspirational month. I had the opportunity to witness the amount of love and service that we as a Body in Christ are capable of providing. The Great Week of Service was an exciting reflection of that. However, September, with its natural disasters, has been a month of escalating devastation. Millions of people are anguished with unthinkable loss. We ask that you continually pray. We also thank you for your response to service through UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. As the month of September continued, so did the natural disasters. The need and work effort will be a journey and so we invite all to keep supporting UMCOR. Please know that 100% of your contributions through UMCOR go directly to relief. Homework Help has launched with a great response. On September 19 we had 36 children! It is wonderful to have the opportunity to be in relationship with those we serve. The children are appreciative and so sweet. Operation Sandwich continues to make 900 sandwiches every 2nd Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m. through partnership with Urban Ministry Center. Sandwiches go to our neighbors in need in the Charlotte area. If you are looking for a service opportunity for the entire family, this is a wonderful one! Learn more at www.urbanministrycenter.org.

UMCOR Disaster Relief As the church, we are reaching out to our brothers and sisters in the devastated areas in the name of and on behalf of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) works to assist communities in basic needs and recovery during a crisis. Because administrative cost are covered through the denomination, 100% of all funds sent through UMCOR for a relief effort go to the effort. If you desire to make a monetary donation, this can be done in several ways. You can make out a check to Weddington United Methodist Church and note in the memo line “UMCOR - Hurricane Relief.” These can be dropped in the offering plates during worship, mailed to the church, or brought by the church office during office hours. Funds can also be sent to UMCOR through our church Giving page on the website by entering the desired amount in the “Disaster Relief” box. As of the first of October, Weddington UMC, combined with the efforts by WCA students, have raised over $27,300 for UMCOR. Thank you to all who have donated. As a church, we encourage your response in these tangible ways, but also through prayer. Page 3
Missions and Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs News and Announcements “Not My Child" Event on Sunday, October 1 Have you ever said these words about your child or grandchild regarding the use of drugs? Maybe you have heard someone else say this phrase. It is very easy for us to miss the signs of drug usage or addiction. The problem of opiates usage and addiction has become epidemic. You might be wondering, “How can we make a difference in the fight against this blight in our society?” Awareness is the first step in the battle on drugs and drug addiction. We are going to host a “Not My Child Event” on Sunday, October 1 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room in the Family Life Center. This gathering will have various presenters to share about drug addiction. We will have a professional therapist, a representative from the Dilworth Center for Chemical Dependency, the parent of a child who has struggled with addiction, and someone who has had victory over his addiction. There will be time for discussion and questions. If you would like more information about this event or if you are interested in attending, please contact Rev. Ed Briggs at the church office. NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) Family Members Support Group meets the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in Room 214 of the main Sanctuary Building. The next meeting will be October 5. The group is designed for adults who have a family member with a mental illness diagnosis. The group is led by two NAMI members who are trained support group facilitators. Contact the Duncans at 704-292-2287 or e-mail evannduncan@yahoo.com for more information. Safe Community Support Group Weddington UMC is sponsoring a Safe Community Support Group for adult women experiencing relational abuse. This group will run for six weeks beginning Wednesday, October 11, 6:30-8:00 p.m. Cathy DeLoach Lewis, MA, LPC, BCPCC, from Christian Therapy Services, LLC will be leading this group. She facilitated the group we’ve held before and because of the heartwarming and inspiring comments the participants expressed from having this Safe Community Support Group, we decided to continuing offering this group for women in abusive relationships. Cathy has a passion for helping women who are living in relational violence and brings with her 18 years of experience counseling women who are abused. Her experience and knowledge will benefit the women who will be participating. Space is limited to fifteen women. The nominal fee of $40.00 and registration deadline is Monday, October 9. Scholarships are available and childcare will be provided. Please contact Cathy at 704-370-0334 or by email at cathy@christiantherapyservices.com if you or someone you know needs the support of this group. Caregiver Support Seminar Rev. Carol Lawler from Hospice will be with us on Wednesday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. to lead a seminar on “Supporting the Caregiver.” It can be very difficult for the person who is taking care of someone who has longterm health challenges. Exhaustion and hopelessness may be where the caregiver finds himself or herself. Because of this predicament, we want to offer this seminar to walk alongside of the caregiver. If you are a caregiver or you know a caregiver who would benefit from this time with Rev. Lawler, please join us in the Fellowship Hall for an evening of information and inspiration!
Stephen Ministry and GriefShare Testimony "No one chooses to experience deep grief, but I am certainly glad that I chose Weddington UMC as my church family as I walk through my own grief journey. The resources available through Stephen Ministry and the GriefShare Support Group are incredible ways to lift you up, help you discover joy in mourning, and find the peace of Christ. Having a Stephen Minister walk alongside me as a Christian friend and influence has been monumental in my faith and grief. It’s someone who is there, without judgement, on the good days and bad to pray with you and provide spiritual guidance. Participating in GriefShare helped me to learn that grief is not a task to simply finish and move on, but rather it’s a new element of self. This group allows you to come as you are and meets you right where you are, while providing great resources to help you through a difficult time. Both the GriefShare and Stephen Ministry programs are wonderful gifts that the church provides for people of all ages and stages of life." -Lauren Litaker

Adult Ministries Women's Ministry Lucy Price Circle invites all ladies of WUMC to our October meeting which will be Tuesday evening, October 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Bonds Grove Fellowship Hall. We will have a social time beginning at 6:30 with the meeting starting at 7:00. Sharon McFadden and other ladies who went on the 2017 Kenya Mission Trip will be with us as our guest speakers. We also ask members to bring books that we can give to the children that attend our church’s Monroe Mission Campus. These children are in 1st to 5th grades. The books do not have to be new; can be some you already have. We have done this in the past and these children are so appreciative to have something they can call their own. The Lucy Price Circle is currently the only circle that meets in the evening, so join us and meet with other women, many who work away from the home and are not able to meet during the day. Our circle is mission focused and has projects, activities and events to help House of Pearls (a Christian transition home), our WUMC Monroe Campus Homework Help children, a family with special needs, and other mission oriented opportunities. Our meetings may have a speaker, an activity, and/or a meal. We enjoy eating and having social times, but also want to share the love of Christ by serving others. The Lucy Price Circle normally meets on the second Tuesday evening from September through May. For more information, contact Carolyn Canzonieri at cpc.canzonieri@gmail.com.
Susanna Wesley Circle (SWC) Please join the Susanna Wesley Circle on Friday, October 6th, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Childcare is available in the Nursery wing, beginning at 9:15 a.m. We are excited to share that we will be hearing from speaker Melanie Hempe from Families Managing Media. She will equip you to make healthy choices for your children’s screen use at home with easy tips you can implement right away. Her talk covers the brain science behind screen use during development stages from toddlers to teens. You’ll learn the effects of television, video games, smart phone use, social media and the latest research, medical facts and symptoms of overuse. Thank you again for being part of this ministry. We are in continuous prayer that our theme and message in every meeting will lead many to Jesus Christ our Savior. If you are interested in learning more, please email us at secretaryswc@gmail.com. Mary Martha Circle will meet on Friday, October 6, at 9:30 am in the Fellowship Hall. We are starting a new Bible Study entitled Broken and Blessed by Jessica LaGrone. It will be helpful to have reviewed the first three chapters of Genesis. Any members not able to attend last month and that have school supplies for the Monroe Homework Help Kids, please bring them this month. We welcome all ladies of the church to join us the first Friday of every month from September through May for fellowship and spiritual growth. Contact Mary Revels at revelsmary@carolina.rr.com or Tommie Craig at tommiecraig@carolina.rr.com for more information.

Adult Ministries . Rev. Mark Curtis Resource Center : Great Books! Staff Recommendation - JoAnn Horstman A World Waiting to be Born: Civility Rediscovered by M. Scott Peck M. Scott Peck, best known for his book The Road Less Traveled, also published A World Waiting to be Born: Civility Rediscovered. Peck’s assertion in this later book is that society is one unholy mess. The reason for this mess, Peck cites, is the loss of “civility” defined as consciously motivated behavior focused on others. In describing his perspective Peck quotes Oscar Wilde, “A gentleman is one who never hurts anyone’s feelings unintentionally.” Framed in today’s language, an honorable person is one who never hurts another’s feelings without purpose. Though this is not a new book – published in 1993 – given the tone of today’s rhetoric and what appears to be our total disregard for those who are different from ourselves, his message seems entirely appropriate for us. Peck realizes that, indeed, there are times when we are faced with delivering a message that we know will be difficult for another to hear. However, it should never be conveyed without careful thought for the one receiving the message. So, how do we reframe our world today so that civility might be reclaimed? Peck’s bottom line: God and God’s unconditional love for all human beings. By God we are all exalted; our responsibility is to accept that status and live (deliver our messages) in such a way as to bring honor to God and to the other. You can check out a copy of this Great Book! as well as many other fine Christian resources from the WUMC Resource Center located just off of Helms Hall in Room 212 in the Sanctuary Building or online at www.weddingtonchurch.org/resource-center. The Resource Center is currently open only on Sunday mornings from 9:15 until 12:15 and is volunteer staffed. If you are interested in helping in this ministry, please contact resourcecenter@weddingtonchurch.org.
