WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 11.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore What a Difference You’ve Made in My Life Years ago Ronnie Milsap released a song entitled, “What a Difference You’ve Made in My Life,” written by Archie Paul Jordan. I remember watching videos of him singing that song. Ronnie is blind, so he most often had on sunglasses as he sat at the piano and sang with incredible heart. When he sang these words, I believed him. He sang with passion. I realized that this song could also be sung in relationship with God making a difference in our lives. I sang this song early in my ministry as part of worship. I especially love these lines:

What a change you have made in my heart What a change you have made in my heart You replaced all the broken parts Oh, what a change you have made in my heart

Love to me was just a word in a song that had been way overused But now I've joined in the singin' 'Cause you've shown me love's true meanin' That's why I want to spread the news.

God has made such a difference in our lives. God showed us love's true meaning. By God’s grace, God has replaced all the broken parts. “Oh, what a difference you’ve made in my life.”

Page 2

How do we respond to this difference? How do we respond to this grace? “That’s why I want to spread the news.” Our response to God’s grace is to praise God, to worship God, and to desire a relationship with God. We also want to “spread the news,” to share about this God with others, to lead others to a relationship with God, and to show others, “love’s true meaning.” We do this through God’s people, the church. The church is called to be the physical presence of Jesus Christ. As we enter into the Fall, we enter into a time of collective discernment of God’s call upon this church. We also enter into a time of individual discernment of God's call upon each of us. How is God calling us individually or as a family to participate in God’s mission? In other words, what difference will we make in the lives of others on behalf of Jesus Christ? Will someone, some day, look toward us individually and as a church and say, “What a difference you’ve made in life” on behalf of Jesus Christ? Our financial stewardship is also a response and an opportunity to make a difference. Through stewardship, we provide clergy to be present with loved ones on behalf of Christ or to teach the scripture; we provide ministers called by God to work with our children, youth, adults, and others; we provide opportunities for children to be received in Jesus’ arms and be blessed; we walk with youth on their journey into Christian adulthood; we provide food and clothes to the less fortunate; we provide churches in Romania and Bulgaria; we build churches and ministries in Costa Rica; we provide a home, food, clothing, and education for children and orphans in Kenya; and the list goes on. All in the name of and on behalf of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our faithful response to what God has done in our lives makes these ministries possible. The biblical call is for tithing or 10% of our resources. I invite and encourage you to enter into a time of spiritual discernment asking, what difference has God made in our lives and what difference do we make on behalf of Jesus Christ in the lives of others.

Love to me was just a word in a song that had been way overused But now I've joined in the singin' 'Cause you've shown me love's true meanin' That's why I want to spread the news.

I invite and encourage all of us to join in the “singin’” because we have experienced “love’s true meanin’.” Nancy and I will join you in this discernment and journey. We commit to be faithful in our personal and financial response to God’s grace. We share our financial commitment with the Staff-Parish Relations Committee for personal accountability as well as a testimony to God’s grace in our lives and our belief in the ministry and mission of this church on behalf of Jesus Christ. What a difference God has made in our lives. Now, on behalf of God, let us make a difference in the lives of others. In ministry together, Terry Rev. Dr. Terry Moore Senior Pastor

UMCOR Disaster Relief Training We will be hosting an Early Response Team (ERT) training for Disaster Response Teams to be able to respond to crises such as the recent hurricane. The training will be held on Saturday, October 13, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at our Bonds Grove Campus. This training is by the United Methodist Committee for Relief (UMCOR) through our Conference. Those who complete the training will receive a badge recognized by FEMA and disaster response organizations. The training costs $30 plus $12 for a background check. To learn more and to register, please click visit www.weddingtonchurch.org/ert or www.wnccumc.org. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) works to assist communities in basic needs and recovery during a crisis. Because administrative cost are covered through the denomination, 100% of all funds sent through UMCOR for a relief effort go to the effort. If you desire to make a monetary donation, this can be done in several ways. You can make out a check to Weddington United Methodist Church and note in the memo line "UMCOR - Hurricane Relief." These can be dropped in the offering plates during worship, mailed to the church, or brought by the church office during office hours. Funds can also be sent to UMCOR through our church Giving page on the website by entering the desired amount and selecting "UMCOR Disaster Relief" Fund. As a church, we encourage your response in these tangible ways, but also through prayer.

Adult Ministries Adult Discipleship Ministry . Patsy Sorrell Connection Opportunities “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” John 15:5 The Christian faith is an ongoing journey that calls each of us to lean into Jesus every day. Some days are easier than others. Something that has proven itself over time, is that when we join with others on the journey, we tend to grow deeper, are more likely to stay the course, and as a result bear fruit along the way. If you’re not already connected to a “smaller batch” of people here at Weddington, consider taking that step this month. There are many different types of groups and spiritual growth opportunities available and our adult Connections booklet is designed to help you find a good fit for you and your lifestyle. Pick up a copy at the church or view Connections online at www.weddingtonchurch/adult/connections. Another way to get connected is to talk with one of our “Connectors” during our 2nd Sunday Life Group Connection on October 14. Life Group 2nd Sunday Connection Life Groups are a great way to meet new people and grow in faith here at Weddington Church. There are several different kinds of groups to choose from: Co-Ed, Men’s, Women’s, and special interests like EmptyNesters, Artists, Weight Loss, Sewing, Study/Walking, etc. The 2nd Sunday of each month a member of our Life Group Ministry Team is available in the narthex and near the coffee stations in the Family Life Center (FLC) before and after each worship service to answer question and help you find a group that will be a good fit. The next 2nd Sunday Connection will be October 14. Our “Connectors” look forward to helping you get connected here at Weddington Church! In addition to our 2nd Sunday Connection, Patsy Sorrell, our Director of Adult Discipleship is also available throughout the week to answer questions and help you find ways to grow and connect. NEW! Forms are available on the church website or in the Resource Center. This is a wonderful resource for everyone at Weddington Church and we'd love to see families, individuals, and leaders take advantage of this great resource as we intentionally grow in faith. In addition to the Resource Center, we also have a Curriculum Library located in the church office that is available for Adult Discipleship leaders to utilize for their group studies. Feel free to call or stop in during church office hours to preview the resources available. RightNow Media If you haven’t yet created a RightNow Media account – now is the time! Lucy Price Circle invites all ladies of WUMC to our October meeting on Tuesday evening, October 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hemby House. Patsy Sorrell, our new Director of Adult Discipleship, will be with us. This will be a wonderful time to get to know her as we hear her testimony and whatever else she has on her heart to share with us. On October 13, the ladies of the circle will attend JAARS Day together at the JAARS headquarters in Waxhaw. This year, JAARS is celebrating 70 years of providing transportation, technology, and training solutions to Bible translation partners worldwide. This day of fun, familyfriendly activities will be a great opportunity to see how JAARS supports Bible translation partners to share God’s Word with every tribe, tongue, and nation. Learn more and sign up at the October meeting. The Lucy Price Circle is currently the only circle that meets in the evening, so join us and meet with other women, many who work away from the home and are not able to meet during the day. Our circle tries to be mission focused and has projects, activities, and events to help House of Pearls (a Christian transition home), our WUMC Monroe Campus Homework Help children, a family with special needs, Operation Reachout, and other mission oriented opportunities. Our meetings may have a speaker, an activity, and/or a meal. We enjoy eating and having social times, but also want to share the love of Christ by serving others. The Lucy Price Circle normally meets on the second Tuesday evening from September through May. For more information, contact Carolyn Canzonieri at cpc.canzonieri@gmail.com.

Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Sandra McKee at the church office to make a reservation for this very helpful event! Weddington Christian Counseling Center The Weddington Christian Counseling Center is now taking appointments at the Marvin Campus location. To learn more or to book an appointment, please visit the website or contact counselor Tony Gibson at (704)-814-4220 or tgibson.wcc@weddingtonchurch.org. Providence Meadows Ministry Weddington UMC has a significant presence of service and ministry at Providence Meadows, a new senior retirement residence facility near Charlotte Latin School. They offer a Sunday worship service on Sunday afternoons and a Bible Study on Thursday afternoons. Both are held in a small but lovely Chapel at Providence Meadows and are the only "live" non-televised, except for a Catholic Mass, services available. Those attending are enthusiastic about these opportunities to grow in intimacy with our Lord Jesus Christ and in Christian community especially since it is hard for many to travel to their local churches. Please keep this ministry and these precious persons at Providence Meadows in your prayers! If you would like to learn more, please contact Rev. Ed Briggs.

Waltonwood Ministry Testimony "As I sit here in my home protected from the weather-related storms of late, I am reminded of the purposes I have as a Christian while here on earth. The English evangelist, George Ferdinand Muller (1805-1898), said it best... A Christian is a mind through which Christ thinks, A Heart through which Christ loves, A Voice through which Christ speaks, A Hand through which Christ helps. I try to put his words into action each day as God leads me daily in meeting the needs of others. Over the past 3+ years, I've had the privilege of leading a Bible Study at Waltonwood retirement community on Providence Road. Mostly attended by 10 - 15 ladies, we meet weekly on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the 1st floor craft room on the Independent Living side of the facility. Praying for one another and studying God's word are our focus. Over these past three years, we've studied many books of the Bible and each Wednesday, I come away from our time together with my cup overflowing. Each lady blesses my heart. You see, we are a community of believers who care for one another. We are known as the Bible bunch by other residents and we love the designation. I am grateful that this Bible Study is part of WUMC ministry at Waltonwood and am thankful for the support of Pastor Ed and the church staff. Lord willing, I will continue being a part of this amazing ministry as the Lord leads. You are welcome to join us. So come and be blessed!" In His Service, Barbara Bennett Page 7
