WELCOME TO WEDDINGTON UMC The Weddington UMC family is a vibrant and growing congregation, and we invite you to become a part of this exciting and dynamic church, as we seek to serve as the Body of Christ in our world. God is doing great things in and through this church. We offer a variety of worship styles and ministry opportunities.

We would love to have you join us for worship, ministry, and service. As the church, we are a family. To learn more about WUMC, attend a Meet Weddington session to get to know the staff and learn more about the church. For more information on Meet Weddington see page 10.

Monthly Reflections - Rev. Dr. Terry Moore White Space I was having a conversation recently with our Director of Communications, Elizabeth Mitchell. Actually, she was reminding me of the deadline for this newsletter article – which had passed. I said to her, “I am trying to find some white space on my calendar.” I was meaning that I was trying to find some time where I could sit down and reflect and write. “White space” is the part of the calendar that is not filled in with something else. She then mentioned, “There’s a sermon idea, ‘Where Is the White Space In Our Lives?’” It is a great question. How do we find the time to slow down, reflect, and realize what God is doing in our lives? We are all so busy. Even our children are busy. They go to school. They come home and get ready for sports practice, dance, or some other activity. We quickly grab something for them to eat. Then homework, followed by bath time, and bed. The next day, repeat. There is very little opportunity for “white space.” Children need “white space.” Our youth are so busy. They have the same routine of school, extracurricular activities, homework, and bed. And our youth are stressed! Not only do they have school, they must excel in school to be ranked high and be competitive for college applications. Many are not getting the sleep they need as their bodies and brains continue to develop because there is not enough white space for rest.

Page 2

White space is important in all of our lives. We need time to pause, rest, and reflect. We need time to evaluate our days and our lives. Am I who I am called to be? Does my calendar reflect my values? Is there enough time set aside for the people I love the most? Am I so busy making a living that I do not have a life? Am I so busy providing for my family that I have very little time for my family? Does my calendar reflect my faith? Is there any time set aside for God or did God get bumped with all the other things? White space helps us reflect and re-evaluate. White space gives more room for God to speak to us. Maybe that is why God stressed Sabbath. We need to protect some white space in our lives. Rest and reflection help us complete the rest of the calendar items in a healthy manner. Genesis 2:2 (NRSV) And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. 2

In ministry together, Rev. Dr. Terry Moore, Senior Pastor

Adult Ministries Evangelism, Proclaiming the Gospel with Grace

Café Connections, Sunday Morning Fellowship

This month we are emphasizing our call to “Proclaim the Gospel with Grace” and engaging in discussion about evangelism. One of the elements of this invitation is a resource we are making available featuring a video and discussion guide. The video and discussion guide are available on the website. There also will be copies of both available at the Welcome Centers on Sunday mornings.

Helms Hall in the Sanctuary Building from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Family Life Center gym from 9:45-11:30 a.m.

Included in this guide are: • Discussion questions that can be used with or without the featured video • Statistics on where evangelism is heading according to the Barna Research group • Suggestions of studies you may use with your small group if you would like further study • A “commitment card” where individuals can share how they will help further “plant the seeds” of faith

Are you interested in getting to know others at Weddington Church? Are you wanting to learn more about how to get involved, join a small group, or find ways to serve? Café Connections takes place every Sunday and offers an opportunity to meet new people, connect with friends, and enjoy a cup of coffee and some light snacks. You'll also find information on our ministries and "Connectors" who are available to answer questions and help you get connected in the life of the church.

We invite you to use this resource and join us in this call to share our faith with others!

We held one in May and a second in September at Mount Shepherd Retreat Center, a United Methodist camp near Asheboro. We participated in team building challenges as well as fun games for our children and youth. We enjoyed high-ropes, low-ropes, zip-lines, water slides, and games. Our adults were able to have time for themselves for study and prayer as their children had fun and learned. Families also had valuable time together in God's beautiful creation and His presence.

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Ministry . Rev. Ed Briggs Whole Hearted Ministry Support Group The social stigma of sexual abuse has left far too many survivors committed to keeping their silence. Our culture now admits the prevalence of sexual abuse but doesn’t understand the long-term damaging effects on a human soul. There is often no place where a survivor can turn for support, encouragement, and healing. Whole Hearted is a newly developed ministry of Weddingon UMC that desires to offer hope to those who suffer in silence, yet long to find their voice, to bring them out of the shadows, and into the glorious healing light of Jesus Christ. In October, Whole Hearted will offer a 13-week support group for women survivors of sexual abuse. We will provide a supportive, safe, and confidential environment where hope can begin. Meetings will be weekly at the Weddington Christian Counseling Center at the Marvin Campus on Tuesdays beginning October 8 at 7:00 p.m. We will be using the workbook, The Wounded Heart, written by Dr. Dan Allender, a pioneer for over 30 years in developing therapy for survivors of abuse and trauma. If you know any adult women who would benefit from this support group, please have them contact Sandra McKee at the church office. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26

Substance Use and Abuse Seminar for Parents of Teenagers Sunday October 20, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Family Life Center Sponsored by the ATLAS Team: Advocates for Those Living with Addiction Shame Simply doing a Google search on alcohol and drug use among teenagers can bring forth some interesting statistics. Project Know did a survey and discovered the following results: • Approximately 50% of teens have misused drugs (prescription or elicit) at least once in their lives. • 23.6% of 12th grade students have reported using illicit drugs in the past year. • 6.5% of 8th grade students have reported using marijuana in the last 30 days. • 17.2% of High School students have reported drinking alcohol for the first time before they were 13 years old. • 37.7% of High School seniors have reported being drunk in the last year. • 17.2% of 12th graders have reported engaging in binge drinking (having 5 or more drinks in a short period of time) in the last two weeks. Don’t you wonder how many of the teens representing these statistics have developed an addiction? What kind of conversations can a parent have regarding substance use and abuse? What signs can be noted when addiction is prevalent? How can a parent help a child living in addiction? Questions like these will be addressed by a panel of presenters during our seminar. Our presenters will be Cristin Dunne, Union County Assistant District Attorney; Sheila Maitland, Therapist and Addiction Specialist; and the Scott Family who will share their personal story regarding addiction. Please plan on being a part of this informative and inspiring event! RSVP is not necessary. Please contact Rev. Ed Briggs for inquiries. Page 7

Upcoming Events Upcoming Events Learning to Listen to God Seminar Active Listening and Accurate Hearing with Clarence Ledford Friday, October 18 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. & Saturday, October 19 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in Helms Hall Jesus said His sheep hear His voice (John 10:3, 27). In no way is He minimizing the importance of the written word of God. Nonetheless, Jesus emphasized that His sheep do and will hear His voice [spoken word]. (John 10:16) Of course, we are not speaking of hearing an audible voice but the “still, small voice.” God’s emphasis is not just our hearing but our responding with understanding and obedience by grace. This response brings His transformation into our lives. Learning to listen to God will forever change the way we relate to Him. You are warmly invited and sincerely encouraged to attend this seminar that encourages hearing God’s voice and a deepening intimacy with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Registration begins 30 minutes prior to beginning the first session. There is no cost for attending but an offering will be taken for the presenter. Please bring your Bible and pens with you. RSVP is encouraged due to limited seating and advanced printing of notes. For more information and to RSVP, please email Bill Jones at bfjgrace@gmail.com. Clarence Ledford from Mars Hill, NC and his wife Peggy have been in ministry for over 50 years. They have served in pastorates here in the US as well as in international missions. Their ministry involvement also includes church and discipleship planting. Countries of service have been Zambia (Africa), Papua New Guinea, and Central and Eastern Europe. They lived in Ukraine during their last five years of being on a foreign mission field. Presently, they are involved in national and international outreach.
