Wedding Planners: An Eye for Design

We caught up with Katie, owner of Havenwood Weddings Company, to tell us about her footing into wedding planning and how wedding design has become such a buzz, also, see the photos from the Utah Venue Market bridal fair she designed, Hosted by Chantel Lauren Designs . 58

Where did your passion of event planning come from? My passion of planning came from being a life long lover of all different art forms and mediums and being able to work with so many talented people at once. I love that I am able to create a place of warmth for people to join together and make something beautiful. I think it is important to have gathering of people and feeling the joy of celebration.

personal taste. Also what the couple together have in common and unique that can represent them in the design. I talk to them about vendors that I personally have worked with or know if they would be in their price range. And if I don't have vendors that work with their design, I am willing and able to do research for the right vendors that meets the needs for the event. I also have great relationships within the wedding community that are willing to help me in the right direction. The client should understand that hiring a planner is not making your wedding budget higher, but really making everything easier and more cost efficient since we have already done research on finding your key elements. I am also a creator that is able to make custom pieces with creativity and find ways of budgeting and cost for the event without taking away the luxury.

Describe your first wedding experience. My very first wedding was my sister's wedding when I was 17 and fell in love with the passion for weddings and what it represents. I am also a romantic and any cheesy romance makes me get teary eyed. Being able to witness something so sacred and sentimental between two people is very rewarding. It is a big responsibility because It is special and they will take with them this day the rest of their lives. Walk us through a typical client process. The process with my clients is I have consultation in person and talk about what their feelings and what the expectations are for their event or design. I want them to feel like their planner is listening and understanding the elements for their day. I try to make them feel important and that it is a honor for me to be able to be a part of their design. I give them a consultation that includes talking about the details of the event. How many guests, what vendors they have booked and venue, their theme/colors and

59

As a planner you want to do the things the bride wants and make her feel like she is satisfied with your services. But as a designer, I try to make the bride understand that I am going to choose things that is tasteful and relates to my own person aesthetic so that I may be able to still be true to myself as a designer. Just like any other vendor or service you pick someone that is going to work well with your personal style and taste. If a bride wants something that is out of my element I may refer them to another planner that would work well with their needs. Brides also must understand that when looking for your planner make sure that that person is organized and can work well under pressure, but also understand their design portfolio. A person may be organized, but if they are not artistic or work with designing, I would hire a designer that can help your planner make it work for your wedding. Most planners are designers but I would do your research about them before you let them design your wedding.

If you care about the design in your wedding I would hire an event designer to help you in every element of your planning. I am willing to hold your hand every step of the way from cake tasting, trying on dresses, and meet you at any venue. You can even call me at night and remind me to find the perfect shoes for your bridesmaids that matches the hand dyed men's ties we did together. We are kind of like your hired best friend that will tell you the truth and make sure everything is perfect. I can make sure that all the vendors work well together to make it coherent and tell your story.

“A talented designer must exercise their brain to come up with these unique and different ideas...

Event Design is a big buzz term, how do you incorporate design into your events? I think the key word in your search should be event designer. When you talk to your designer about costs of their services a bride must take into account that not only are you paying for time spent on research, talking with vendors and calling and scheduling appointments, but you are hiring them for their talents. A talented designer must exercise their brain to come up with these unique and different ideas and can sometimes be very draining mentally. Just like an athlete would exercise their muscles we exorcise our mental muscles. It is something that can be develop over time and as designers we use our talents to make a beautiful design for you. We will take your theme and ideas and turn it into magazine worthy and something that your family will talk about for ages. And most importantly something that you will take with you the rest of your lives as a couple.

Wedding Florals with Poppy & Bloom Floristry A Little History - In 1984 as a fun job to stay home with the kids, Cindy began Sunshine Creation Floral in her home -- a little 1940’s ivy covered cottage along 13th West in South Jordan. Most Life long South Jordan residents favor Cindy and her little flower shop. Quality work and integrity easily have set her apart over the years, along with her versatile knowledge of so many styles and types of floral design. Sunshine Creation Floral has been the go-to flower shop for weddings and arrangements of all kinds for decades. Now, with three designers, Poppy & Bloom was created in January 2016 with the vision to go further with weddings than we ever have before. Taking the values and integrity from our roots with Sunshine Creation and combining all that goodness with gorgeous high end floral design. We wanted to make weddings an exclusive part of the business, because the details of every bride’s big day should be special and one of a kind. We started this expansion with one goal in mind: Become more than just another wedding vendor for our brides. Make it an experience.

online and in person/over the phone or email. A good vendor will be engaging and you should instantly get the vibe that they desire to be a part of your big day! We are thrilled for every bride that inquires to do flowers with us and are honored at the opportunity!

Since meeting and discussing florals for your wedding is the most important part of booking a florist, we at Poppy & Bloom try to make it as easy as possible. If you’d like to schedule a consultation, you’re welcome to call, text, email, inquire on our website or even comment on Instagram! We will reply to you and schedule a consultation based on your availability. Consults usually take place at the shop in South Jordan, but for our Utah Valley or Northern Utah brides, coffee shop consultations are doable, totally doable.

“Starting Poppy & Bloom has taken my dreams for this business further than I could have ever imagined.” Cindy Cunliffe, owner

When seeking not just florists, caterers, or photographers, but any vendor for your wedding, you can rely on resources like our lovely friends at Wed Utah. Consider vendors with great reviews and an inviting presence both

75

Many brides can get overwhelmed by thinking they have to become a flower expert before contacting a florist. We assure you that you don’t need to have any floral knowledge whatsoever. That’s our job! During your consultation we can recommend flowers to you based on your colors, theme and time of year for your wedding. Ideas of what to bring to a floral consultation Mom, Maid of Honor, Fiancee, or anyone who can be there to support you and help you make decisions. Inspiration photos (We LOVE Pinterest) Color swatches or general color theme Photos of your wedding dress General idea of your budget An open mind to alternative flowers for the season/budget The consult is a great way to allow us to connect with you, we like to designate one designer to your wedding. So the designer who conducts the initial consultation will be your go-to contact leading all the way up to your wedding day. You can text your designer with any changes that may happen along the way. Like, if the RSVP shows that you’ll be needing two additional centerpieces, or your grandma is flying in from Canada, she will need a corsage! We can definitely make these change!

Booking with Poppy & Bloom: To book with us, we require just 10% of the total proposal amount to reserve your wedding date. You’re also able to make payments on the remaining balance all the way up until 3 weeks prior to the event date. Upon booking, we will have you sign our booking agreement; otherwise known as a contract. Contracts shouldn’t be scary! When booking any vendor or service for your wedding day, contracts are a very good thing! Any reputable vendor will have you sign a contract. They can provide peace of mind that your professional is confident in their work and agrees to keep you and your big day in their best interest. We know when you’re planning a wedding, it can get hectic, and the big day will be here before you know it. So we like to make calls to our brides the week of the wedding to go over any last details along with delivery and setup times before the wedding day, to ensure we have everything just as you remember it to be from what we discussed in the consultation. At Poppy & Bloom, it’s our goal to connect with brides on a level that they can completely trust us in order to make booking their florist an easy and fun part of the wedding process. We feel that a lot of friends are made along the way, as well! Keeping in contact with our bride’s wedding photographer is a must for us, so we are able to see all those details come together and the smiling faces of our brides on the happiest day of their lives is one of the best perks of the job. We love what we do. pbfloristry.com

Sadie Banks Photography sharing her insight on a day as a wedding photographer The bride and groom have just been pronounced husband and wife and they begin their walk down the aisle, or out the temple doors, together. Their faces are beaming and their happiness is contagious. There's an energy in the air that stems from the happy couple. After all of the family pictures are taken, it's time to take a few photos of just the bride and groom at their venue. The groom can't stop sneaking glances at his bride and the bride can't wipe the smile off of her face. More than one kiss is stolen. The groom won't let his bride go. And their love is a tangible feeling. At the reception, the bride and her father are called to the dance floor for the daddy/daughter dance. For a few minutes, we all go back to a simpler time. It seems as if everyone takes a moment to remember their dad.

Then it's time for the bride and groom's first dance. It doesn't matter to the bride and groom if anyone is watching, because they are in their own world where only the two of them exist. The first dance is when the bride and groom finally get to be alone on their wedding day. As they soak up the moment, you can see the pure love on their faces. As a wedding photographer, I have a lot of favorite parts of shooting a wedding day, but these four moments are at the top of my list. I love these moments because they are always so raw and real. It never matters who is getting married or where they got married, the experiences are always uniquely similar in the best way possible. I think if you asked any photographer what their favorite things to capture were, they too, would tell you of moments throughout the day. Posed and staged pictures are beautiful, but candid moments captured are timeless. So when your big day comes, don't worry about the small stuff or try too hard to create perfect moments. Simply enjoy the day, because that's how the best moments are created and captured. http://www.sadiebanksphotography.com/

Whitney Harris’ Fitness Tips 1) Invest in yourself. The countless benefits of hiring a well-educated professional trainer and nutritionist will far outweigh the initial cost. Their guidance can save you hours in the gym and kitchen by teaching you the most efficient way to train your body, and will allow you to take a very direct path toward achieving your specific goals. 2) Wake up & eat protein. Eat a high-protein (lowcarbohydrate) breakfast within 30 minutes of waking up each morning. This will train your body to utilize fat (your body’s largest store of potential energy) for energy throughout the day rather than crave carbs and then crash. 3) Get more active. Whatever your current fitness level, try to incorporate an extra 5 minutes of exercise each day (i.e. walk on your breaks, take the stairs, incorporate a 3-minute workout you do morning and night). 4) Be honest with yourself. If you’re 5’3” and curvy, don’t tell yourself you want to look like Naomi Campbell. Accept what you’re working with, eat well, stay active, and be your best you! 5) Don’t diet! There is no reason to deprive yourself or make healthy eating out to be the enemy. At least 80% of any weight-management program is good nutrition, and the key to good nutrition is proper balance and consistency. So you don’t have to start living off of salads, but stick with a meal plan that includes a lean source of protein at each meal, coupled with a small amount of complex carbs and an even smaller amount of healthy fats.

6) Do your cardio after you weight-train. A rigorous and healthy weight-lifting regimen will burn through your glycogen stores, putting you in a prime fat-burning state to maximize the results of your cardio. 7) Be realistic. When setting fitness goals, give yourself adequate time and the proper tools to succeed. If your goal is to lose 20lbs, don’t expect to do it in one month or by simply cutting out soda. Set small, attainable goals (i.e. lose 1-2lbs per week) and consistently work toward them. 8) Drink more water! To stay truly hydrated, make it your goal to drink 8oz. of water every hour, eventually working your way up to a gallon per day. 9) Drink a protein shake (chocolate Premier Protein is my favorite) 30 minutes before bed. This will continue to feed your muscles you work so hard for through the night. 10) Get adequate sleep (different than rest). Just because you can function on 5 hours of sleep doesn’t mean it’s good for you or you should. Most adults still need 8 hours of sleep a night to function optimally. There is a strong relationship between sleep and health (particularly heart conditions). Better sleep, better health and vice versa.

Whitney Harris Miss Fitness Inc. Owner As a fitness professional, I assist clients in achieving a healthy and happy lifestyle. Whether developing an at-home fitness & nutrition plan, coaching one-on-one, or teaching a group fitness class, it's always a results-driven party! With an extensive professional background in dance and fitness, I draw from my 10+ years of teaching experience to connect with my clients and lead innovative, energetic and exciting workouts that keep them coming back for more. Utilizing a variety of cutting edge fitness programs, techniques and skills, I will assist you in achieving your fitness goals before you know it! Be your best you!

Live Wedding Music: Six Tips to Find the Perfect Band Live music is a great addition to any wedding. A wedding band creates a sense of class and sophistication. It’s also the thing people most often remember about your wedding, next to the food. Your guests get to enjoy a live performance. With crisp vocals, bass grooves, and funky drumbeats the atmosphere comes alive. Live bands transcend age groups. If you want everyone to enjoy your wedding and you want that classic, “adorable girl dancing on top of grandpa’s shoes” type reception then hire live music. Here are some six things to consider when scoping out a good live band for your wedding day. 1. Know Your Audience There is an old adage in real estate that the three most important things when buying a house are location, location and location. Similarly, when choosing a live band the three most important things to consider are the audience, audience and audience. Approximately 75% of your wedding guests are not your high school buddies. Rather, they are the friends of the happy couple’s parents and the aunts and uncles of the bride and groom. They are not very into rap and tend to be irritated by thumping woofers and sound levels that do not allow them to have a conversation

with the person next to them. Choose a live band that can play to the diversity of the audience and understands the difference between conversation volume and dance volume later on during the wedding. That way everyone can talk, eat, and dance. Review the band’s song list to make sure there is a good mix of classic and modern hits.

2. Special Song Requests For your perfect first dance and father daughter dance, give the band the names of a few special songs in advance. 3. Experienced Band Make sure the group has actually played at a wedding before and that they have good reviews. The best way to do this is to have a strong recommendation from someone you know, so ask around. Most bands will also provide references from past weddings.

80

4. Cost Estimates Sure, a live wedding band is usually a little bit more expensive than a DJ. However, the overall effect live music has to the ambiance of the wedding is significant. Because music is such an integral part of the event, here are estimates to help you budget. Smaller combos, three to five musicians, cost around $600-$1,000. Larger ensembles, with horns and multiple singers, can get pricy. Add about $200 for each additional musician. Some groups market themselves more as a show/party band and may include extra fees for lights and a sound technician. Generally, a talented small combo will give you the environment you’re looking for at price you can afford. Even a small combo with professional instruments and sound equipment makes a splash both musically and aesthetically. In most cases, a band can be paid at the conclusion of the wedding. Tips are not expected but appreciated.

5. Space & Power A fancy drum set and a polished electric bass are sure to excite your guests from the moment they arrive but real instruments take up space. Talk to the band and plan for space and power requirements. 6. Strong Vocals Finally, as Adam Sandler would tell you, make sure they have a good singer. A vocalist can make or break a band. LASTING TIPS FOR HAVING YOUR BEST SKIN Skin care is essential and there are a few key products that should be incorporated into your regimen when preparing for your big day. First, a good exfoliant twice a week. It will give an instant smooth texture and softer appearance to your skin. It will also help so that your products will penetrate deeper into the layers of your skin. Second, acquire a Retinol (also know as Tretinoin). Start with a .25% potency, because Retinol can cause redness, tightness and flaking. Make sure you slowly incorporate it into your routine. Retinol speeds up your cell turnover rate, which gets rid of your old skin and allows your new skin to manifest. This creates a fresh and smooth texture. It also helps to lighten hyper-pigmentation and soften acne scars.

Next, an antioxidant! Antioxidants fight off the free radicals that cause the loss Of elasticity and collagen in your skin. Lastly, a good SPF (50 or above). Your skin is vulnerable to the sun everyday, but even more so when using active products. For example your retinol is a very active product that will make the vulnerability of your skin intensify. It's working hard to push up that new fresh and healthy skin to the surface. And you want to protect that new skin. SPF VERY IMPORTANT, use it everyday! The moment you know your wedding date, start ramping up your skin care using these suggestions. These products WILL help in creating a more radiant healthy and refined texture to your skin.
