LOVIN’ THE ROCKS Independent of the week Natalie Banyard visits Clifton Rocks, home of beautiful and unique jewellery

here’s nothing like a stunning piece of jewellery to show someone that you care. So whether you’ve left your Christmas shopping to the last moment, are preparing to pop the question in the new year, or simply want to invest in a sparkling accessory, Clifton Rocks ought to be at the top of your list. The perfectly named Bristol jeweller has recently relocated from the top of Park Street to The Mall, Clifton Village, and is already proving to be a success. The small, attractive boutique offers a wide range of gold and silver; unique, handmade jewellery from a range of talented national and local designers, including pieces by the shop’s owner, Clare Chandler. The shop also has an on-site workshop, where Clare can make alterations, repairs and one-off commissions at the request of her clients. Clare, 34, tells me: “Clifton Rocks offers a lovely range of jewellery. Some of the pieces are mine, which I make on site. My style is quite classic and

organic, highlighted with gemstones and diamonds. “I also make a lot of wedding and engagement rings, including a bespoke service, so I can design something completely unique with the couple. “The shop also stocks around 30 other UK designers, including some local to Bristol. I try to go for designers whose work I love, but is also different from mine, so that there is a range of jewellery for all tastes.” Local designers featured in Clifton Rocks include Natalie Connolley, whose contemporary work is influenced by ancient jewellery, and Jacks, who is one of the UK’s top emerging talents in modern jewellery design. “We feature some great designers and the collection is constantly updated,” adds Clare, “so I’d encourage people to keep visiting to see the latest designs.” Talking to Clare, it comes as no surprise that she has made a success of Clifton Rocks. She’s clearly passionate about what she does, and it has been an ambition from an early age. “When I was 14, I did a short course at a jewellery-making workshop in Bristol. I just really loved it – and I was good at it,

which was a bonus. “After leaving school, I studied metal smithing and jewellery in Leicester and worked in various jewellers before deciding to take the plunge and open my own business in Clifton. “I opened my shop in Queen’s Road, just off Park Street, about four years ago, which was a brilliant first shop. “I really enjoyed it and had great feedback from customers, but when it was time to renew the lease earlier this year, I

decided the time was right to move on. “It’s a new challenge,” continues Clare. “There’s a bigger footfall here and it’s a slightly larger shop. “We’ve already welcomed new customers as well as retaining our loyal customer base. It’s exciting.” Clifton Rocks attracts a real cross section of shoppers, although most tend to be couples in search of an engagement or wedding ring, or

SOOTHE AWAY YOUR PAIN Health and wellbeing Bowen therapy is a gentle ‘alternative’ route to the relief of pain and stress. Kate Edser has a relaxing meeting with Bristol practitioner Jane Hird.

hysios, osteopaths, chiropractors and sports massage therapists can be pretty physical when trying to sort out the root of an injury, so for some people it’s quite a leap to consider that a very light touch of the fingertips can be enough to achieve similar results. This is the case with Bowen therapy, which works to relieve all manner of back and joint pain, and is also successful in treating headaches and stress. In Bristol, Bowen therapist Jane Hird practices at the long-established Natural Health Clinic on Gloucester Road, Horfield, and also nearby at home. She explains: “Bowen is a very gentle therapy, a form of body work, which consists of light rolling moves across the muscles, tendons and ligament and fascia of the body. “It is looking to cause a response in the fascia – the connective tissue that fits

everything together in the body. “There has been a lot of research into the fascia, and when it’s under strain it can be tough and fiberous and doesn’t work very well. “People who are looking into Bowen are thinking that the fascia links the outer body to the inside of the body very deeply.” It is this assumed link which is thought to be the reason that gentle touch on the skin can have far-reaching effects. Certainly I noticed a considerable difference in the level of stiffness and pain in my own injured lower back at the end of a session with Jane. Other benefits include a deep sense of relaxation; the tension I am carrying (not the result of meeting Jane!) all but disappears. Softly spoken and with a quiet confidence, Jane is already assessing me as I walk through the door – looking at symmetry and movement – and she continues her checks while I lie face up and then face down on the therapy bed.

She quickly deduces that my left leg is shorted than the right, and turns out more at the hip, both of which affects pelvic alignment. Though my back muscles are generally stiff, those on the left side are worse – the injury (an unfortunate encounter with an underwater rock during a canyoning session a few months back) exacerbated the pre-existing issues. Starting on my lower back, Jane makes a few small adjustments on precise points and then leaves the room for a couple of minutes. This cycle is typical of a Bowen session and continues as she works along my spine and neck and down my

legs, the regular breaks giving the body time to “think” about each change. So what started Jane’s interest in Bowen therapy? “My sister suffered from headaches, neck and shoulder pain for about five years. She was a case study for someone studying Bowen and her pain evaporated within two or three weeks; I was pretty gobsmacked. “Biology and earth or natural sciences I have always been interested in, but never followed as a career. “I was at the point where I had four children and I had been looking at different ways of keeping the family healthy. I’d

looked at homeopathy and Chinese medicine and was quite open to an alternative type of approach.” So Jane started training in 2008 and has been offering Bowen therapy to clients since 2009. A session starts with a process of fact gathering. “I have a form, which gives me basic information about what people are coming to me with and what they think caused the problem, previous accidents, medication, diet and how much they drink – basically I try to find out a bit about their lifestyle. “People come for all sorts of reasons – a lot of back pain

because Bowen is very much marketed as a muscular skeletal treatment, and it does have other effects too, so you can treat migraine, shoulder pain, frozen shoulders, sore necks and whiplash and people also use it as something that allows them downtime. “And the idea of touch is quite important too – touch is important for human beings because people don’t thrive very well without it. “People are often in pain, or stressed and have other issues other than a sore shoulder, or a bad knee, so there are other things to talk about. “Very often if you are stressed

it can make the pain worse, so I like the fact that I can spend time with each person as well as giving the treatment; I find it very rewarding. “Bowen therapy is cross-fibre, so unlike massage, which goes in the same direction as the muscle fibres, it works across the tendons, muscles and ligaments. The other important point is that I make a couple of moves, then leave the room and give the body a break. It’s a bit like, if you keep on picking a scab, it is never going to heal. “Our bodies are being bombarded by things all the time and are often in a state of damage limitation and if there is

something not quite functioning we often don’t notice it, but in this quiet space, and with very little work, your body can reflect on something that might need adjusting. “Some people can also have quite a profound response; I had a lady this week and she suddenly felt very tearful. “Because the tissue can hold emotion, sometimes as the tissues are released the emotion will also come out.” Jane is a member of the Bowen Therapist Professionals Association and can be contacted through the Natural Health Clinic (see panel above).

ow about some unique Christmas decorations this year? No, no need to go shopping – you can just print some out. If you have a 3D printer, of course. Printing in 3D isn’t a new idea, but it has exploded in popularity over the last year, mainly because the printers themselves have got so much cheaper. A 3D printer sounds hi-tech, but really isn’t that complicated. Like a normal printer, you load it up with raw material. But while a normal printer uses ink, a 3D printer prefers plastic, usually on a roll like knitting wool. And while a normal printer prints by squirting ink on to a flat surface, a 3D printer heats up its plastic raw material and squirts it into space, usually starting on a flat surface and building upwards, layer by layer. The printing space is usually an empty cube, and your printer can create anything that fits within that cube. The internet is playing an

important part in the success of 3D printers, because it’s an excellent way of sharing “recipes” for things to print. If you want an idea of what sort of recipes are on offer, take a look around the Thingiverse website (www.thingiverse.com). It’s a directory of 3D objects you can download and print for yourself – for free. There are loads of Christmas decorations on offer, plus

thousands of stranger ideas. You can print your own puzzles, gift boxes, lamp shades, even a pair of shoes. Despite getting cheaper and a bit easier though, 3D printing is still very much in its infancy. Give it a few more years, and it might be everywhere. And printing your own Christmas decs will be as usual as panicking about whether the tree lights will work.

evelopers are beginning to realise that building interesting homes, set within a varied landscape, will sell better than cheap standard boxes plonked in rows; the outdoor spaces between new houses are finally being given more thought. Cheswick Village is a large new housing development set just behind the MoD offices in Filton. Some features, including a small stream, have been retained and green space has been generously allocated throughout the scheme. In this garden at Cheswick Village, the ground tapers towards the rear. There are no overlooking houses, but a four-storey block does have a view over the garden from a respectful distance. We decided to build an octagonal deck to the rear of the garden, which could be surrounded by plants, including two trees, to give extra privacy. This private jungle is accessed

along a curved path, which creates a large planting bed on the sunny side of the garden. Here we planted small shrubs to the rear, to keep some winter interest, and a variety of herbaceous perennial plants, to give a colourful summer display of flowering plants. Through this curved bed, a narrow path leads to a small paved semicircle, with just enough room for a bench, which gets the benefit of sun throughout the day. The fan pergola overhead will support a wisteria sinensis, which helps to screen the block of flats from the main patio. The patio supplied with the

house was not quite large enough and so it was extended with matching slabs and trimmed with a contrasting charcoal curved brick edge. This brick was also used to edge the new paving and paths in the rest of the garden, which helps to unite the existing patio with the new paving. The paths were filled with tumbled Raj Blend Indian sandstone pavers. Our clients were keen to keep their bikes undercover. We decided on a custom-built shed, with double doors for easy access, and a mono pitch roof directing rainwater to a butt at the side of the shed, which is

screened by a trellis. At the other end of the shed there is a similar screened area for the bins and recycling boxes. A small solar-powered water feature is set among pebbles and boulders at the front of the trellis. Although house builders have begun to think more creatively about the outdoor spaces between houses, the state of the soil left behind after building is still an issue. In this garden, for example, only a thin layer of topsoil was sprinkled on top of a sticky clay base. Having built the main structures in the garden, the soil needed immediate attention, so we dug out all the planting areas and replaced the top 100mm with fresh topsoil to give the plants a chance. Now planted and with plenty of added organic matter, the garden is all set up for the return of the growing season next year.
