Up Close: From the Editor

For me, a fair isn’t a fair without sitting in the grandstand for a concert. I was born and raised in a midwestern city that hosted the state fair. So on my father’s day off, we packed the picnic basket, gathered the suntan lotion and walking shoes and we were off for a full day of adventure. Sometimes we attended a grandstand concert. Sometimes we did not. It just depended on who was scheduled for that particular night. Even if we did not attend, I could see the fireworks from my bedroom window that were displayed after each concert. One of the first I remember (I’m admitting age here) was The Lawrence Welk Show. My favorite performer was Myron Floren. You see, he played accordion and so did I. I dreamed of the day I would be on stage playing “Lady of Spain” and becoming the next celebrity fans demanded to see. Many years later, I had the honor of interviewing Mr. Floren after one of his concerts. Upon asking if I could accompany him at his next appearance nearby and he nodded, thinking he’d never see me again. Two months later, I was in Akron - with my accordion and surprised him backstage. I have a very happy ending to my story... Because of my job as a reporter, I saw my dream come true and played, not one - but TWO songs with my musician hero. The first outdoor play I witnessed was the Stephen Foster Musical at My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, KY. Somehow, there were very few seats open and we wound up sitting on the very front row. Within a very few moments, I was engrossed in the story line and felt like I was participating in the action so close to the stage. I returned home determined to build my own outdoor stage and write my own musical play. It never really happened that way. But during high school, I did write a simple play for our church youth group to perform for our parents. I created a part for each member of our group. One of the quiet shy boys was given a part of a preacher with no speaking part. During rehearsals, he blossomed. He ad libbed comical lines throughout the play and had the whole cast giggling repeatedly. I was kept busy rewriting the play over and over, leaving in his revised lines. By the night of the performance, he was the comical star of the show. We had no idea he could act. One day he skipped school to attend a job interview with a friend. Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO was wise enough to see the talent and wound up hiring him instead! Years later, he is still there and is also featured in shows at Shepherd of the Hills. (Yes, he's still ad libbing.) Was I a celebrity musician? Did I manage an outdoor musical? No. But through my service as an editor, journalist, & travel writer, I have reached my dreams through others. It is a privilege to share a bit of their success through this magazine. So until next month Let’s Go make some more memories!

Things to Do:

Find Your Talent

What is your special talent? Do you know yours or did you have to stop and think about it? Perhaps this question would be easier to answer for each other than for ourselves. You might be surprised what good qualities others see in you. I have heard more than one person in this life say they have no talent. I refuse to believe it. They may not be singers, dancers, musicians, actors, writers, painters or sculptors. However, if we dig deep enough, we’ll find they are talented enough to excel at something. Before we continue, allow me to explain one thing: there is a difference between a learned skill and a natural talent. I can play the piano. I took lessons for years and even taught lessons for a long time. Over the years, listeners have told me how talented they think I am. In truth, this is a learned skill. It didn’t come easily. I had to work at it. I still do. In contrast, a naturally-talented musician can play without thinking about it. They can play by ear without any printed music and they even manage to make it look easy to boot. My poor brain isn’t wired as such. Speaking of comparisons, have you ever noticed how some people can make even the simplest motions look awkward while others make the most mundane events magically entertaining through fluid movements? As an example, let’s observe bartenders. I don’t drink, but when we are somewhere with a skilled bar-

By Kandy Derden Things to Do Editor

tender, it is quite entertaining to watch the spinning glasses, shaking processes and even the act of pouring their concoctions is poetry in motion. Another example might be cooking. Knives can look really dangerous in an uncoordinated person’s hands, but can be like paint brushes to an artist when in a truly-gifted chef’s hands. Let’s discuss hidden talents. Some have the gift of putting others at ease. During a short conversation with them, even the shyest person will begin to emerge from their shell. A talented conversationalist can ask leading questions which cause the timid to bloom into the interesting person they are. Another natural talent is seeing good qualities in others. Some have the gift of being able to say the right thing at the right time, all the time. I marvel at those who can quickly write flowing poetry, interesting prose or even a beautifully-worded letter or note. Here’s one for you: can you remember names? That’s not only

a talent; it’s a real gift! So, just what does all this have to do with this month’s issue which features the performing arts? My first instinct is to suggest some sort of event where you would be a spectator. On second thought, I would urge you to get out there and experience something you have always wanted to do. Who cares if you aren’t the greatest at it? You’ll never know until you try. When asked, I find it difficult to tell anyone what my talent or talents might be. My regular readers know I include a recipe which is hopefully appropriate to discuss with our monthly theme. It probably wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to consider my selection of recipes a talent. Either that, or I just know by the ingredient list what flavors and textures pair well together. In reality, I include things I like. It’s as simple as that. Therefore, this month’s treat was selected for several reasons. For starters, it is quick and easy to make during this busy travel and vacation season. Secondly, it doesn’t heat up your kitchen during these hot summer months. And finally, it sounds, looks and tastes great! What’s not to love? Caramel Oreos Dip Oreos in melted Kraft caramels. Allow to cool then dip them in chocolate. Drizzle with white chocolate if desired. Yum! So, what’s my special talent? I can’t tell you. I’ll leave it to you to decide if it is because I don’t want to brag or because I am still looking for it.

Audiences around the globe can also join online prerecorded screening every Sunday until September 5th, at 9 am (PT) for Part One, at 10:30 am (PT) for Part Two, at 12 pm (PT) for Part Three. This marks the first Actors’ Gang mainstage production since the theater closed its doors in March of 2020. When faced with the inability to assemble, The Actors’ Gang began working via zoom to adapt Terkel’s Hard Times. The production explores 30 different stories – a mix of stories documented by Terkel and original stories from the family histories of cast members – of courage and determination, a testimony of what it takes to survive unprecedented times, which are now presented over three different performances. “We started developing We Live On in April of 2020 and it started with a question: How do we, as artists, address the fear of this time, the loss, the desperation, the lines at food banks, the poverty? It was essential to tell the stories of survivors, knowing that the courage and resilience of those that made it through the Great Depression could provide inspiration and hope for our audiences today. “I was lucky enough to meet Studs Terkel – a longtime hero of mine, a journalist that gave voice to the anonymous, the forgotten -- and interview him for LACMA before he passed. Studs was such an important documentarian of the human condition, of what it takes to survive through hardship. These voices from Hard Times that Studs has left us, remain resonant and essential today, perhaps more so than when they were chronicled back in 1970, a reminder of the tenacity, faith and love it will take for us to rebound from the trauma, unprecedented isolation, and loss of loved ones that we have recently lived through. -20- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2021

As actors, I think it’s important to find this kind of material to wrestle with. I’m blessed to have a company of actors that understand not only the importance of getting to the truth of difficult subject matter but also, in this challenging time of being apart, getting to that truth in community with each other. It is our hope to create that community throughout the world with our audiences in an intimate, personal and immediate way. We Live On is a piece born from loss and the limitations of lock down that seeks to create healing and catharsis and hope for a shook up world.” -Tim Robbins The Actors’ Gang Theater strives to make its content accessible to all patrons. Admission is Pay What You Can but the theater is extending free tickets to patrons who can’t afford to make a donation. For additional information or if you have questions, need assistance, or access to free tickets, please email at BoxOffice@TheActorsGang.com. Some of the stories presented in We Live On include: Sally Rand, whose fan dance to the strains of Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” and Chopin’s “Waltz in C Sharp Minor,” created a sensation at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair and helped launch a career that lasted more than 30 years. (Based on Studs Terkel’s interview with Sally Rand) Labor activist Cesar Chavez, who was moved to action by the targeted mistreatment of field workers

Theater: ‘We Live On’ that he witnessed as a child in The Great Depression. (Based on Studs Terkel’s interview with Cesar Chavez) Louis Banks, who rode the rails from Arkansas to Los Angeles on top of a boxcar with dreams of becoming a chef and hopes of finding any employment in the North. (Based on Studs Terkel’s interview with Louis Banks) The words of Langston Hughes, the poet of the Harlem Renaissance, performed by contemporary poet Cyrus Roberts. After graduating from high school, Terkel attended the University of Chicago, from which he received a law degree in 1934 during the worst of the Depression, although he had no interest in and never did practice law. While performing with the Chicago Repertory Theatre company he met Ida Goldberg, a social worker and lifelong activist who became his beloved wife until her 1999 death. They had one son. The nickname Studs comes from the character Studs Lonigan created by James T. Farrell, one of Terkel’s favorite writers. Terkel joined the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Writers’ Project, and worked on radio soap operas, in stage plays, as a sportscaster and a disc jockey. His first radio program was called “The Wax Museum,” an eclectic selection of whatever sort of music struck his fancy, including the first recordings of Mahalia Jackson, who would become Terkel’s lifelong friend.

In the late 1940s Terkel moved to television, where he was the main character of “Studs’ Place,” a groundbreaking unscripted television drama about the owner of a tavern in Chicago through which interesting characters, some famous, passed. But Terkel’s television career ended when he was blacklisted in 1953 for refusing to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee. He had also spoken out in favor of price and rent controls and against the poll tax and Jim Crow laws. As Terkel once said in an interview about those years, “I signed many petitions that were for unfashionable causes and never retracted.” Despite the blacklist and the political times, his well-known radio program, “The Studs Terkel Program,” continued to flourish, and aired from 1952 through 1997 on Chicago’s WMFT. The one-hour program was broadcast five days a week during those forty-five years and Studs interviewed a remarkable range of guests including Martin Luther King Jr., Leonard Bernstein, Mort Sahl, Bob Dylan, Dorothy Parker, John Prine, Tennessee Williams, Frank Zappa, and Big Bill Broonzy. Many of these interviews can be heard on line at the Studs Terkel Radio Archive created in 2014 collaboration with WMFT, the Chicago History Museum, with support from the Library of Congress. Today Studs is perhaps best known for his acclaimed oral histories – among them Division Street, Hard Times,Working, The “Good” War (which received a Pulitzer Prize in 1985), and Race, all of which remain in print at The New Press -- and for his many years as a radio interviewer in Chicago. He also appeared in Ken Burns’s documentaries on baseball, jazz, and the Civil War, as well as in a handful of movies, most notably John Sayles’s “Eight Men Out” (1988).

Red Rocks Park

If you think of Red Rocks Park as just simply a beautiful place to see a concert, think again! All around you are 738 total acres of deer, pines and prairie, geological wonders and spectacular vistas. At 6,450 feet above sea level, Red Rocks Park is a unique transitional zone where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains. The diverse environment allows visitors to see plants, birds and animals of both regions. Then there is the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a geological phenomenon – the only naturally-occurring, acoustically perfect amphitheatre in the world. From Sting and The Beatles, to opera stars and U2, every artist aspires to play on this magical, spiritual and emotional stage.

Opened in 1941 with an outdoor seating capacity of more than 9500, It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2015. Hosting literally thousands of concerts and events over the past 75+ years, the history of entertainment at Red Rocks tends to follow the arc of popular culture and popular music. Opera, classical and chamber music performances of the early 1900s to 1940s gave way to the rock and roll and psychedelic music of the 1960s and 70s. Soft rock took over the venue for the majority of the 1970s. Performers then and now considered musical superstars of all genres to fill the amphitheatre, including jam bands, new age rock artists, alternative, indie, rap and hip-hop and now, EDM performers and DJs.

Places to Go:

L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center

Many years ago, Mrs. Stephens and her husband, the late potato-marketing pioneer L.E. Stephens, would go to the top of Bartz Hill in Pocatello and gaze out at the Portneuf Valley, Scout Mountain and the Snake River Valley. In 1998, ISU received a gift of $10 million from Mrs. Stephens. It was seed funding for the center that would bear the couple’s names. When Mrs. Stephens was considering where to locate a state-of-the-art complex, President Bowen suggested Bartz Hill, on Bartz Way on the ISU campus. Mrs. Stephens agreed. June 10th, 2002, was the first day of construction. The first performance in the Stephens Center was “Man of LaMancha,” in October 2004 in the Beverly B.

Bistline Theatre. Music, dance, theatre, lectures and more bring the communities of Idaho State University and southeastern Idaho together in one spectacular locale: the $34 million L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. Built primarily with the generous support of hundreds of private donors, the 123,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art complex debuted in October 2004. It crowns a Pocatello hilltop that offers vistas as inspiring as the artists who perform here. We invite you to join ISU in celebrating the performing arts in Idaho. Activities, events and the 2021-2022 entertainment series will be announced soon. Visit https://www.isu.edu/stephens/events/ for details.

Dierks Bentley, an award-winning American Country singer- songwriter, released his debut album in 2003. Since then he has been creating a signature blend of tunes, part country, a bit of honky-tonk, part bluegrass sprinkled with some modern rock and roll. Growing up in Phoenix, Dierks, made his first trip to Nashville with his father at the young age of 19, which he plays tribute to in his song, “I Hold On”. He obtained a job at The Nashville Network where he

spent much time researching footage of country performances that helped shape his signature style. His homework paid off, as he established himself in the country music scene with his first and second album certified Platinum, winning a CMA Award for Best New Artist, as well as, multiple songs peaking on the Billboard charts. Catchy tunes about being drunk on a plane, pickup trucks, finding himself at Burning Man or a soulful anthems

of love and relationships, it’s impossible to narrow down the list of Bentley’s top songs. His lyrics are relatable and delivered with such charisma, making his music popular and accessible; earning him his place on the charts. Dierks Bentley is known for his high energy shows that are filled with nonstop music and a stage presence you won’t want to miss. For tickets, visit https://bendconcerts.com/

Look For The Good, written and recorded in Jason’s home studio in Southern California, is a continuation of his career-long love for reggae music. It’s a genre he’s always returned to, inspired both by its rhythms and its revolutionary lyrics, and after making 2018’s Know. the singer found himself ready to further explore how he could participate in the style. Jason connected with producer Michael Goldwasser (founder of indie reggae label Easy Star Records and producer for Matisyahu, Steel Pulse, Toots and the Maytals and his own band, Easy Star All-Stars), who had remixed Jason’s single “Have It All,” and the pair began sending ideas back and forth. Initially, Jason didn’t realize their collaboration would yield an actual album. For more information, schedule of events or tickets, visit www. statetheatreportland.com

America’s Got Talent Winner Ventriloquist: Terry Fagen Famed singer, comedian, ventriloquist and “America’s Got Talent” winner Terry Fator is following up his record-breaking Las Vegas residency with an all-new show, “Terry Fator: Who’s the Dummy Now?” Fator previewed the show for several weeks at the New York-New York Theater inside New York-New York Hotel & Casino, and will move into his new space at the resort’s Liberty Loft beginning Wednesday, Aug. 11. “Terry has been an important member of our MGM Resorts Entertainment family for more than a decade, playing a crucial role in our city’s entertainment landscape,” said Mike Neubecker, New York-New York’s President & COO. “We look forward to opening Liberty Loft next month, our property’s newest entertainment venue, and welcoming Terry’s fans with an intimate show experience.” Fator said, “Plans to move into New York-New York have been over a year in the making, but like many of our plans over the past year, they were sidetracked! I am thankful to the MGM Resorts team for allowing me to perform at the resort, and am touched by the tens of thousands of fans who came out to support

me this year. When we started to talk about Liberty Loft, I was thrilled to discover it affords us the opportunity to create the ideal viewing experience for my audience.” Featuring new songs by more than a dozen iconic singers, “Terry Fator: Who’s the Dummy

Now?” takes Fator and his audience on a whimsical journey of discovery, as we learn how and why the world-renowned ventriloquist created many of his beloved cast of puppets. Each reflects a different part of his life, his personality and the people he’s met along the way. Fator is joined onstage by a cast of characters that includes: Winston, the Impersonating Turtle; Maynard Tompkins, the Elvis impersonator; Duggie Scott Walker, the

annoying neighbor; legendary country singer and ladies’ man, Walter T. Airdale; crooning soul singer Julius; and many others. Old Alabama Town

W

ould you like to take a trip back in time to late 19th and early 20th century Alabama? You don’t need a time machine. Just take a trip to Old Alabama Town in Montgomery. It’s more than a museum. It’s traveling back in time among through 50 authentically restored structures with “residents and workers” doing the everyday tasks of that time along six blocks of downtown Montgomery. The “Town” is divided into three sections; a Living Section, a Working Section, and Along the Street. Three blocks of the town is a working block that shows how potteries, blacksmiths, even musicians plied their trade There is the Oliver Cotton Gin dating back to 1900. On most days, re-enactors are

there showing off their town. A blacksmith was the backbone of every community then. They were even more important than modern mechanics, as they not only kept the wagons rolling but also made things needed for everyday life, like axes, tools, household utensils, and nails. Daniel Webster Boatwright originally opened this shop in Fleahop in Elmore County in 1893 and it remained in operation by his family until the 1940s. There’s a gristmill, old pharmacy, print shop, and many more buildings. Travel back to when these were an everyday part of peoples’ lives. Visit the living block where people of the time go about their everyday lives. Visit classrooms where students leaned the latest reading,

writing, and arithmetic. This was not too different from today in appearance but decades away in technologically. Here are desks with inkwells and slates, not computers and tablets. You can visit Lucas Tavern. Taverns then were not the bars we think of today. They provided food and shelter, as well as drinks. Lucas Tavern is the oldest of the buildings, built before 1818. It was originally a two-room dogtrot when the Lucases bought it. They added two additional rooms and enclosed the dogtrot. The added rooms gave them a dining room with access to the outside kitchen. The tavern was moved here from the Old Federal Road about 15 miles east of Montgomery. Then the Federal Road was the major connection between Washington D.C.

and New Orleans. Taverns like this were located about every 15 miles, which was an average day’s walk. Its claim to historical fame came when the Marquis de La Fayette stayed here on April 25, 1825 en route to Montgomery. The corner grocery store was part of everyday life before the coming of chains. This one dates to 1892 when it began life as Daniel O’Leary’s Grocery and Saloon son morphing into just a grocery store. Churches were more than a place of worship then. They were a meeting and socializing place. They built this one around 1885. It was the First Colored Presbyterian Church of Montgomery. Every town needed a doctor. Dr. Thomas David Duncan built this doctor’s office in 1938 in his parents’ back-

yard and operated out of it all his life. Doctors served as dentist and sometimes veterinarians then. They got paid in eggs, poultry or however their patients could pay them. In those unenlightened days, if you were sick you got treated whether you had money or insurance. Doctors weren’t part of huge corporations then charging over $400 a visit. Ever wish you could go back to a more peaceful time? Along the Street Section is where old building are recycled and are in use today. Many of the homes are now bed and breakfasts. But some are put to other uses. You can visit Shaffer Garden filled with native plantings that show what a 19th century central Alabama garden might have looked like. One building is almost a circling back to the origi-

nal premise of Old Alabama Town. Rescued Relics is located in the 1920s Wilbanks Warehouse that once serviced those newfangled horseless carriages. Today, it’s a notfor-profit salvage business that raises money to restore and maintain the historic structures at Old Alabama Town. It sells historic architectural elements and materials from pre-1960s building that are being razed and sells them to people wishing to incorporate antique elements into their projects around Montgomery and the central Alabama region. As the old song goes, let the circle be unbroken.

Touch of Music Festival

The DeMotte Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the Touch of Music Festival on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Spencer Park from 2 - 10 p.m. This year’s event is presented by DeMotte State Bank with their 10 locations over five counties. The traditional Touch of Dutch Festival is getting a little downgrade due to Covid-19. “We wanted to make sure to bring this event back after the state shutdown of events last year.” said Chamber President, Mitch Mullen. “Safety, of course, is number one, so we decided to scale it back a bit this year.” he added. The planning for this annual event begins each January. But with the uncertainty of the potential 2021 mid-summer state mandates, the Chamber needed to work closely with local officials to be sure safety was key. There will be nearly ten food vendors, along with a beer garden accommodating an over 21 corn hole tournament. A musical extravaganza will take place on the band shell stage with country, rock and acoustic acts performing. Justin Sumler will bring his soulful acoustic talent from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Radio Gypsy is NWI’s newest premier party cover band, performing a wide variety of music. They have something for everyone and will perform from 4:005:30pm. Country music band, SouthRidge will be on stage from 6 - 7:30 p.m. And NAWTY will return to perform everything from Motown on up, you can’t go wrong with this ever-changing Band. They will be on stage from 8 -10 p.m. Fireworks will be featured to begin at dusk. For those that think this festival is forever changed, think again; the name will return to the Touch of Dutch next year and moving forward. Craft vendors and the Touch of Dutch Parade will not take place this year; however, the committee has already begun planning for 2022! If you would like to become a volunteer for the Touch of Dutch, email or call the Chamber at info@demottechamber. org or 219-987-5800. Things to Do:

Back to the Farm Members of the Missouri River Valley Steam Engine Association are busy making arrangements for their next Steam Engine Show. This 58th annual farm reunion will be held this year in conjunction with the International Harvester Chapter 1 State IH Show on Sept. 9-12. Set at the Brady Farmstead Showgrounds in Boonville, the McCormick-Deering 15-30 and the IH Scouts and Cub Cadet lawn tractors will be the featured items. Other tractors, classic cars and trucks, antique hit & miss engines, and miniature tractors will be on display. The International Harvester Company (often abbreviated by IHC or IH, or shortened to International) was an American manufacturer of agricultural equipment, automobiles, commercial trucks, lawn and garden products, household equipment, and more. It was formed from the 1902 merger of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvester Company and three smaller manufactures: Milwaukee; Plano; and Warder, Bushnell, and Glessner (manufacturers of Champion brand). In the 1980s all divisions were sold off except for International

Trucks, which changed its parent company name to Navistar International. Several ongoing activities will take place to keep all who attend entertained. Tractor owners will line up Friday morning for a 39-mile cruise. An advance $30 entry fee will include lunch. A MATPRA tractor pull and MRVSEA truck pull will be Friday evening, both starting at 7 p.m. A garden tractor pull is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, starting at 1 p.m. Historic farm demonstrations will show off molasses making, dyno horsepower testing, quilting, life skills, blacksmithing, threshing and rock crushing with steam. For the kids there will be a kids train, a petting zoo, and tractor-related games. Don’t miss browsing through the general store, flea mark and food concessions. You can also take a Brady farmhouse tour to view the ways of farm life. The Saturday evening live musical entertainment will be presented by Marty Oetting with Bluegrass music. Things to Do:

Boone Dawdle

COLUMBIA, - There are so many things to enjoy about Columbia in the summertime. There are the leisurely bike rides on Columbia’s celebrated trails. There are the numerous outstanding outdoor concerts. There’s delicious and seasonal locally-sourced food and Columbia’s distinguished farmers markets. There’s kicking back and enjoying a good movie in a cool theater or in a pretty park. And, of course, there’s the ice-cold, locally-crafted adult beverages and the requisite yard games at the city’s different award-winning breweries and winery. Columbia’s annual Boone Dawdle, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021, combines all of the summer favorites - biking, music, food, fun, nature and film - in one enjoyable and entertaining event. The Boone Dawdle is aptly named as to “dawdle” means to

take one’s time and that’s the best way to experience this lazy summertime expedition from Flat Branch Park in downtown Columbia to Les Bourgeois Vineyards’ Blufftop Bistro in Rocheport. This summertime staple doubles as a fundraiser for the Ragtag Film Society and the internationally-acclaimed True/False Film Fest and also as a stop-gap for those that are eagerly awaiting the 2022 True/False Film Fest scheduled for March 3-6, 2022 (the Dawdle is kind of like a distillation of the entire documentary film festival into one mobile summertime event). After a one-year hiatus for the Dawdle as a result of COVID-19, Barbie Banks, co-custodian of the Ragtag Film Society and one of the organizers for the True/False

Film Fest, is very much looking forward to the 2021 Boone Dawdle. “The Boone Dawdle returns!” says Banks. “This event brings together some of the best things in life and it is designed to pair the inherent beauty of Mid-Missouri with the exceptional arts programming that the True/False Film Fest is known for. After having to cancel the Boone Dawdle in 2020, we are ecstatic to bring back one of our favorite events.”

Things to Do:

Rainbow Fish Musical

So many fans seem to love the international bestseller and award-winning book, “The Rainbow Fish,” with its wonderful message of friendship and belonging. Now you can bring the magical, colorful world of the deep blue sea to life on your stage! This large-cast musical features a variety of charming school and sea-creature characters who admire the famous Rainbow Fish, the most beautiful fish in all the ocean. When Rainbow Fish refuses to share his (or her!) vibrant, shimmering scales (played by separate actors who become a chorus for solo songs), the whole ocean seems to turn against the vain creature. Unhappy that no one adores him anymore, the Rainbow Fish seeks out the wise Octopus, whose tentacles can also be played by separate actors. Octopus helps the young fish learn that it’s far better to be admired for being kind than for being beautiful. With a bubbly, energetic score and a script that invites wonderful creativity and flexibility, the universal message at the heart of this one-of-a-kind musical becomes much more than just a simple children’s story. This play will be presented August 5-7, 12-14 by the Shade Tree Players at Bismarck-Mandan’s Community Theatre. Dakota Stage was founded in 1978 by a group of local residents with education and experience in the theater arts. They pledged their time and talent to enrich our community with the culture and creativity of the theater. The mission of Dakota Stage Ltd. is to provide quality community theater through -70- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ August, 2021

the talents of artists in the Bismarck/Mandan area for the enjoyment of our audiences. Today, we work with local theater artists to produce theater productions that engage local artists, volunteers, and audiences. Shade Tree Players was founded in 1970 by Sister Barbara Ann Gehrki of the University of Mary as the Priory Community Center Children’s Theatre. The group presented one outdoor touring production each summer. In 1991, the organization merged with Dakota Stage under its current name and has grown to include as many as nine fullscale summer children’s theater shows annually. Shade Tree Players provides opportunities for children of the Bismarck-Mandan area, ages 7-18, to develop and grow their theatrical talents. Our mission is to provide as many children who are interested a chance to participate in the performing arts in front of their family, friends, and community. Performing with others fosters teamwork and communication, promotes confidence and motivation, and instills professionalism, responsibility, and commitment. These skills will benefit the participants in their personal and professional lives for years to come. For more information, https://www. dakotastageltd.com/

The Only Ones, the group’s latest record, finds Ryan and Pattengale performing a stripped-down acoustic set without a backing band. On “The Only Ones,” the pair returns to the core of what they are about musically: the duo. The Milk Carton Kids perform on Friday evening.

About We Banjo 3 - There can’t be many rhapsodic superlatives left in the box for Irish quartet We Banjo 3, whose virtuosic Irish/ bluegrass/old-time mix has cata-

pulted the band to the top of the Billboard Bluegrass and World Music charts. One of the best live acts to come out of Ireland in many years, the multi-award winning We Banjo 3 combine supergroup credentials with a breath-taking command of the emotive power of fiddle, guitar, mandolin and banjo. Any single member of this group could electrify a venue with a solo performance, but together, in the joyous musical alchemy of We Banjo 3, their passionate lead vocalist like a young Springsteen adopted by the Chieftans, the result is truly unforgettable. Simply put, the gold standard of Irish and American roots music. We Banjo 3 will perform on Saturday and Sunday. MerleFest was founded in memory of the son of the late American music legend Doc Watson, renowned guitarist Eddy Merle Watson. MerleFest is a celebration of “traditional plus” music, a unique mix of traditional, roots-oriented sounds of the Appalachian region, including old-time, classic country, bluegrass, folk and gospel, and blues, and expanded to include Americana, classic rock, and many other styles. MerleFest tickets are now on sale. More information can be found at merlefest.org.

SMITHFIELD – After being delayed and then canceled in 2019 due to weather and the 2020 event being scrubbed due to the COVID-19, the Smithfield Yacht Club will open once again for the River Rat Regatta on the Neuse on Saturday, August 14 at 4:00 p.m. The event will feature a race between 2-person teams in cardboard boats from Smithfield’s Boat Ramp on N. Entries will compete in either the Youth (under 13) or Adult division, and prizes will be awarded for the fastest 1st and 2nd in the Youth division and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Adult division. There will also be overall awards given for Best Decorated and the Titanic Award for most memorable sinking. Rules and registration forms are available at bit.ly/riverratregatta. “We had a great turnout for the first River Rat Regatta in 2018, with thirty-three creative

and mostly well-built boats, and an enthusiastic crowd cheering the teams on toward the finish line,” stated Gary Johnson, Smithfield Parks & Recreation Director. “After not being able to have the regatta for two years, we can’t wait to see the entries that people have been working on.” Awards will be given at 7 p.m. and will be followed by live music from Blind Joy, a local classic rock band, until 9 p.m. The River Rat Regatta is hosted by Smithfield Parks & Recreation, the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation, Smithfield Police Department, and Smithfield Fire Department.
