Sports Spot : YORBA LINDA, CA - Gaming backpacks have come a long way from being just convenient storage solutions to becoming highly specialized gear for gamers on the go. CORE Gaming leads the way with design-forward backpacks and bags that are roomy, rugged, and feature-rich, making them must-have accessories for gamers. “As the gaming industry evolves and the popularity of eSports and mobile gaming surges, carrying solutions need to keep pace,” says Paul June, VP of Marketing for CORE Gaming. “CORE Gaming’s family of award-winning backpacks and bags have all been designed with the needs of today’s—and tomorrow’s—gamers in mind.” Rise of Laptops and Mobile Gaming The early days of gaming have roots in the era of bulky desktop computers. Gamers didn’t have the need for specialized backpacks then. Gaming was mostly confined to homes, and transporting gaming equipment was not convenient or realistic for many. With the advent of smaller, lighter laptops and the rise of mobile gaming in the late 1990s and early 2000s, gamers became more mobile. This shift created a demand for backpacks that could safely carry gaming laptops, consoles, accessories, and gaming peripherals. Extra space for personal items didn’t hurt either. The eSports Boom The explosive growth of eSports in the 2010s meant that professional gamers and esports enthusiasts needed a way to transport their gaming gear to tournaments and events. This led to the enhancement of backpacks designed specifically for gaming equipment, with features like padded compartments, cable management systems, and extra pockets for peripherals. -6- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ November, 2023

Integrating New Technology As gaming peripherals and devices became more advanced, gaming backpacks started integrating new technology. For example, all CORE Gaming Backpacks and the Deluxe Duffel come prewired for built-in charging stations and an external USB port. Branding and Aesthetics Gaming backpacks are not just about functionality. They are also a statement of style for many gamers. In developing its gaming backpacks and bags, CORE Gaming collaborated with gamers, gaming influencers, and designers. The goal was to develop gear that was functional as well as reflective of a gamer’s identity. For example, CORE Gaming’s collection of legacy Alienware bags, with the distinctive Alienware logo, smartly combines both function and aesthetics. Durability and Ergonomics In addition to style, given how valuable and delicate gaming gear can be, durability and protection have become crucial factors. Modern gaming backpacks are designed with robust ma-

tions and offer an external USB port. It all comes with a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.

terials to protect against bumps and scratches. Ergonomics has also become a focus, with features such as padded shoulder straps and back panels for added comfort. Customization Some gaming backpacks offer customizable features, allowing users to tailor their backpacks to their specific tech. This can be particularly useful for gamers who have unique setups or want a backpack that can adapt to different types of gaming gear. Highly configurable, the CORE Gaming Tactical Backpack’s modular, external, front webbing offers customizable storage with removable MOLLE pockets. Designed for Gamers on the Move As gaming became more mobile, professional, and technologically advanced, gaming backpacks designed to carry gaming gear followed suit, evolving into specialized and stylish accessories. CORE Gaming encourages gamers to check out our most popular gaming backpacks and bags. All are prewired for built-in charging sta-

On June 1, 1533 Don Pedro de Heredia established Cartagena de Poniente. African slaves had been introduced into New Granada, Colombia, in the 1520s and by

the 1770s more than 55% of the country was comprised of free people of color. During the colonial era Cartagena was one of the Spanish Main’s most significant ports. Precious metals were shipped from the port and supplies, products and slaves were imported. Cartagena would

become the main slave port in the Spanish colonies, one of only 2 official slave ports, and the final port before crossing to Spain. Because of its lucrative trade it became prey for other European powers and defense became important. The Spanish erected defensive walls be-

ginning in 1586 and continued into the 1780s. The protected area includes the Cathedral, the Government Palace the areas where the rich and middle class lived and Gethsemani the section of the city where the slaves lived and now the neighborhood many of their descendants continue to inhabit. whc.unesco.org November, 2023~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -9-

It is estimated that the number of “bozales,” savage Africans, who came through Cartagena’s port exceed 1-million and Africans arriving in Cartagena were listed according to their land of origin and skill set. This form of registration, casta de nación, morphed into surnames and today allows people to trace their ancestry. Once they arrived slave sales were held in the Plaza de los Coches, now referred to as the Plaza de los Coches, where visitors can purchase all types of sweets.

Cartagena fortification is an outstanding example of 16th- 18th-century military architecture, the most extensive and complete in the New World. The walls extend nearly seven-miles and are 25-ft. thick and up to 83-ft. high. The walls and outer forts took more than 200-years to construct and 16 of the original 21 bastions are extant. There are areas where you can walk the walls and one of the high points of a visit is a sunset drink atop the walls at the Café del Mar. Spain’s King Ferdinand commanded the construction

Peter Claver, “Apostle of the slaves,” was born in Spain in 1581 and lived in Cartagena from 1610 until his death. Claver was ordained in 1615 and spent his life ministering, by his estimate, 300,000 slaves. He was known to take a canoe out to arriving ships and feed and care for new arrivals. Reviled by many in his lifetime, he was canonized after death in 1888 and named the city’s patron saint. A statue in the Plaza San Pedro Claver honors his works with a lifesized sculpture of Claver with a slave situated at ground level encouraging examination and interaction. A few steps from the statue is the entrance to the Cloister, Museum and Church of Saint Peter Claver. The Cloister is a good place to reflect because of its serenity and its importance as the location of Claver’s

slave baptisms. A flight of stairs leads to the small room where he died in 1654 after a 4-year illness. At ground level a museum exhibits artworks and artifacts. The Catholic Church features a marble altar containing St. Peter Claver’s remains. cartagenainfo.net/ saintpeterclaver The Plaza de Bolivar, dominated by a statue of Bolivar the country’s liberator, dates from 1856 and is and is filled with wonderful architecture and colorfully garbed Palenqueras selling fruits carried in bowls on their heads. The Palace of Inquisition, a 2-level museum that interprets the Spanish Inquisition from 1776 to 1821, is on the plaza. It is an architectural marvel and displays include torture devices, information panels, artworks and a video that relates the true tale of an African female tortured and executed for using indigenous cures. The second story is a mustsee as it covers the three main cultures in Colombia through artifacts, dioramas, paintings and maps. Before leaving the area be certain to see the window on the side, topped by a cross, where people were denounced.

1598. Benkos Bioho founded the walled Palenque de San Basilio, a free community in the hills, in 1603. This was the first such community and it is located 30-miles southeast of Cartagena. The village maintains its African heritage, music, dress, political and social traditions, arts and language to such an extent that it was inscribed as a UNESCO heritage site in 2005/08. There are more than 3,000 residents who are directly descended from the original settlers, most

speaking Palenquero, a unique creole language with Bantu roots. After repeated attempts to conquer the village Spain officially declared it free in 1713. 100 Year Anniversary of

Built in 1923 and located at the intersection of Marietta Street and Ted Turner Drive (formerly Spring Street), this site was originally the home of Major Hamilton Goode of the Confederate Army, and one of the few structures that survived Union General Sherman’s burning of Atlanta on his March to the Sea. The property was purchased in 1888 by John Thomas Glenn, son of Luther Glenn, Atlanta’s mayor from 1858 to 1860. John T. Glenn, a lawyer who led Atlanta Steel for years and sat on the board of Coca-Cola, became mayor of Atlanta in 1889, a year after acquiring the property where the Glenn Build-

ing would be built more than three decades later. When he died in 1899, his estate included the land on which the 10-story Glenn Building was to be erected in 1923 and subsequently named after him. Waddy B. Wood, a well-known Washington, D.C. architect, de-

signed the Glenn Building. Considered an excellent example of the Neoclassical Revival style, Wood reinterpreted classical motifs from earlier his-torical styles in the first decades of the 20th century. Featuring a smooth, limestone facing and terra cotta detailing, the Glenn Building’s

Glenn Hotel Building heavy cornice is its crowning glory, constructed of brown limestone deco-rated with egg-anddart, bead-and-reel, and dentil molding capped with neoclassical terra-cotta panels. 39 lion heads serve as guardians of the property. The Glenn Building’s ornate exterior remains unchanged and is among only a few tall office buildings that survive in Atlanta from the early 20th century. In 2006, the building reopened as the Glenn Hotel, Atlanta’s first boutique hotel, completely preserving the exterior but renovating the interior in contemporary luxury. Glenn Hotel recently underwent a top to bottom renovation, which was completed in 2022. Wm. Bratwurst Heaven with W Wurstmeister Mike Sloan serves up award winning Germanic European style meats at two locations in Missouri in a can’tmiss experience for any meat lover. Those passing through on I-70 between Kansas City and St. Louis are in for a unique and flavorful experience: bratwurst, bacon, and other Germanic European style meats at Wurst Haus Market and Restaurant. When it comes to bratwurst, Sloan is an artist in the kitchen as well as a crusader for his beloved German sausage with its distinctive flavor profile, often featuring notes of nutmeg, coriander, ginger, caraway, and other spices.

-16- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ November, 2023

Sloan is not shy about his ambitions, good-naturedly proclaiming, “I want to be the Colonel Sanders of bratwurst.” He now serves his hearty meals and German-styled sausages in decidedly American-sized portions at the Wurst Haus Market and Restaurants in Hermann and Fulton, Mo. Both locations are a short 10 15 minute detour off the busy Interstate 70.

For those who haven’t brushed up on their German recently, ‘wurst’ means sausage, and ‘haus’ – well, that one is obvious. The two restaurants more than live up to their name, serving up a culinary bounty of Sloan’s 45 flavors of bratwurst and 12 flavors of bacon, among other mouth-watering offerings like beer marinated brisket, house smoked turkey, and even German bologna. Sloan and his wife Lynette have a combined 70 years’ experience creating specialty meats. All sausages and bratwurst are handcrafted inhouse. Like most traditional artisan

Wurstmeister Mike Sloan chefs, Sloan is particular about where he sources his meats. Sloan has formed many relationships with local farmers and most of the beef, pork, chicken, and turkey he purchases is from farms within a 300-mile radius. Sloan also has his own meat processing facility. In addition to handling the meat for his own businesses, he processes deer for hunters and livestock for local farmers and ranchers. “We were farm-totable before we even knew what farm-to-table was,” says Sloan. Over the years, Sloan has accumulated more than 600 international, national, state, and regional awards, including 15 best-of-show honors and 29 international awards from the German Butcher’s Association in Frankfurt, Germany. His most recent award of national recognition was at the American Cured Meat Championships (ACMC), held in July 2023 in Charlotte, South Carolina. Sloan won Reserve Champion for Venison Soppressata. “I’m proud of the awards because they don’t just give them away – you have to earn them. The German awards are very special to me because Germa-

ny is the epitome of the meat industry and sausage makers. It’s where it all started,” says Sloan. His passion for creating both traditional and new sausage flavors, and for curing bacon, is equal to his devotion to delivering an authentic German experience for his guests. The warm-toned, wood-tabled dining hall lined with cold cases filled with meat, and wooden barrels hanging from the ceil-

ing invite a party atmosphere which includes the enticing smells of marinating and roasting meats. Rounding out the offerings of Wurst Haus’ bountiful menu are house-brewed craft beers and specialty sodas made with real cane sugar, along with Sloan’s wife Lynette’s family recipes of delicious side dishes. The tasty sides of German Potato Salad (packed with bacon), Red Cabbage, Onion and

Cucumber Salad, among others are ample in size to make meals by themselves. A variety of cakes – including German Chocolate - are available for dessert. The brats and Sloan’s never-ending quest to discover new taste combinations are reason enough to make a pit stop. “We have so many different flavors that were not even thought of 15 years ago,” says Sloan. “One of the brats that we make, our number one seller, is a caramelized pear and Gorgonzola cheese bratwurst. As soon as we tell people it’s made with caramelized pears and Gorgonzola, their mouths start watering before they have even tasted it,” he adds. With other mouthwatering choices like the popular bacon, potato, and cheese bratwurst, the jalapeno bacon bratwurst, along with many other delicious combinations, Sloan encourages you to double orders and take extra home. For those with late-night cravings for after hours, stocked vending machines are located outside the Hermann Wurst Haus. Recipes for Living:

Being Thankful for Thank Sounds simple, doesn’t it? There’s nothing complicated about a specific time to stop, observe, appreciate and simply be grateful. We might do it on a regular basis, but this is the designated holiday for expressing it to yourself, others, family members, friends, coworkers and most importantly, to God. Think about how convenient it is to have a long weekend to rest, regroup and recharge in preparation for the Christmas season. No, I don’t mean a football marathon or shopping frenzy. I mean rest! Because worship is harder when you are busy and tired, make it a priority! You’ll be glad you did. Lest you get the idea I am suggesting you hide from the world, allow me to clarify. I am simply suggesting we slow down and take time to enjoy the season. When the weather finally cools off, most of us are ready to head indoors for the duration of winter. Before this happens, use this special weekend to reconnect with the people you love the most. When growing up, going to grandma’s for Thanksgiving was a given. Likewise, Christmas just wasn’t Christmas without going to her house. Traditions begin in unusual ways and some stay the same forever while others evolve

with the passage of time. And then there’s the way we do things: by accident. It all started with a fire at our house in February on the coldest day of the year. It was our first home, so remodeling was slow due to a lack of funds and time. However, a fast forward got put into play. We moved what few belongings survived into a small temporary apartment while the clean-up, reconstruction and repairs were being done. By the time we were able to move back in, the holidays were rapidly approaching. Wanting to show our ‘new’ home to our loved ones, we invited all my in-laws to come for Thanksgiving. We had a great time together eating, laughing, golfing, laughing, playing cards, laughing, visiting, laughing, making memories and laughing. Do you see a pattern here? After four days, on the way out the door to head home, one of the siblings said, “Next year, everyone come to our house.” On the following year, another sibling said the same and a tradition was born. We don’t get to do it every year anymore for various reasons, but we sure enjoy it when we do all manage to gather in one place. This year, we plan to try it again for Thanksgiving although a few family mem-

bers aren’t sure they will be able to come. However, I won’t let that put a damper on my holiday. We always enjoy the time with whoever manages to come. Even if they can’t arrive in time for the traditional family feast, they generally manage to carve out a bit of time to stop by and say hello and snap a few pictures or play a few rounds of cards. There is always something yummy to eat nearby such as cookies or chips or popcorn because it’s hard to eat with a fist full of cards. On the flip side, it’s hard to play cards with a turkey leg in your hand. Unfortunately, as time has passed, our family has expanded and grown so large it is hard to find a place large enough for all of us to gather. Somehow, eating out or

ksgiving

renting an event location just doesn’t have the same atmosphere as grandma’s kitchen. Even our communication is different these days. Sometimes we are all sitting in one room together, each with a phone and a tablet, our eyes focused on the screens, sometimes two each. The conversations become short or nonexistent. Not so with a big bowl of popcorn nearby. One by one, the devices get put down as we begin to move closer to the bowl and pretty soon, we are actually facing each other and talking! What’s so special about popcorn? I’m glad you asked. You see, this is no ordinary popcorn. The recipe below is from a relatively new acquaintance, and yet someone I already consider a dear friend. In a few previous articles, I have mentioned my

By Kandy Derden Things to Do Editor

family’s involvement in Disaster Relief. This is still one area of our lives where communication is abundant. Perhaps it is because we are always gaining new volunteers and we are getting to know each other. More often than not, it is because we already know each other, but haven’t seen each other in a long time and enjoy catching up. Sometimes, it is through necessity due to power outages. Whatever the reason, it is one aspect of our lives where we all share a strong camaraderie in our faith and beliefs, purpose and goals plus a compassion for those needing our help. We become family rather quickly due to living conditions. We work together, eat together, wait in line for a shower together and sleep in rooms close enough to hear the snoring from next door and beyond. Last summer, while responding to a windstorm, one of the volunteers shared a recipe with me. I grew up with popcorn balls, but this is better for several reasons. For starters, it tastes better. It is also much easier to eat. Factor in the ease of making it and you’ve got a real winner. Thank you, Patrick Ryan! CARAMEL CORN 2 bags puffed corn (not cheese flavored) or 2 bags microwave popcorn, popped 2 sticks real butter 1 c. brown sugar

½ c. clear syrup ½ tsp. vanilla ½ tsp. soda Heat oven to 250 degrees. Melt butter, sugar and syrup. Boil two minutes. Turn off heat, add vanilla and soda. Stir until foamy. Pour over popped corn in 3-4” deep roasting pan. Stir to coat evenly. Bake for 45 minutes, stirring every fifteen minutes. Just as a pure fluke, I came across a recipe on line which is remarkably similar to this. It’s possible my friend got the recipe from the same source, once or twice removed, thus the small tweaks here and there. Feel free to add your own touches. Some people add peanuts or other favorite nuts. I’ve had a few friends suggest I drizzle chocolate over the top. There have been a couple of relatives who like crushed peppermints sprinkled on it just as it comes out of the oven so it will stick to the pieces. Creating New Traditions In Atlantic City

By Susan Ferrier Freelance Travel Writer

What is a tradition? Merriam-Webster calls it “an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior.” But every custom started as a one-off. That’s one of the wonderful things about tradition. There is always room for a new one. Therefore, once the family has finished the Thanksgiving Thursday stuffing (pun intended), why not create a new tradition of a multigenerational family three-day weekend in Atlantic City? Before dismissing the idea and saying, “Atlantic City is a casino town centered around adult activity,” perhaps it is time to rethink that notion. This may have been true 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. -26- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ November, 2023

But in the past half-decade, this casino town has started to shift to a more family-friendly destination. Today, families can find something in this seaside town that every member can enjoy. If a tradition for your family is to shop in brick-and-mortar stores on Black Friday, there is no reason to ditch that. While in Atlantic City, head to the Tanger Outlet. Formerly The Walk, the mall features more than 75 stores including name brands such as Coach, GAP, and Timberland, plus Bass Pro Shop. Adjacent to the outlets you will find the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University, a collection of art galleries, museums, studios, and shops. A

visit to the Arts Garage is sure to reveal the perfect unique gift for that hard to buy for person on your holiday shopping list. Plan to stay at the family-friendly Showboat Hotel. This former casino not only offers accommodations suited to families, but also has enough entertainment options under one roof to keep the entire clan happy and having fun. This full-scale entertainment complex provides activities both adults and kids will love. Without ever stepping outdoors, enjoy GoKarts, roller skating, a rock climbing wall, a mini-bowling alley, miniature golf, and more. Additionally, the Showboat is home to the Lucky Snake Arcade which has

everything from Virtual Reality games to old-school pinball and arcade games like Asteroid. Don’t let winter weather spoil the summer fun. Families can enjoy the newly opened Island Waterpark at the Showboat. At 120,000 sq ft, this wet and wild mecca is the largest indoor beachfront entertainment complex of its kind. It features 11 slides, a 1000 sq ft Wild Wave FlowRider surf simulator, a 6500 sq ft Island Drift Lazy River, and Kids Cove, an interactive splash zone. Additionally, the park includes two attractions not seen at any indoor aqua park in the US; a 1000-foot Coconut Zero Gravity Coaster suspended high above the park and offering spectacular 360-degree views, as well as a 300-foot-long RipTide Zipline. Plus, the park’s Paradise Adult Island sets aside 10,000 sq. ft. for the grown-ups. This space, overlooking the ocean and waterpark includes a swim-up bar, Bliss Pool, DJ entertainment, Peloton Bikes, manicure stations, chair massages, VIP Cabanas, and workstations. If you haven’t crossed every person off your list or if you want to take the kids to see the holiday lights then head to Historic Smithville, located about 20 minutes from Atlantic City. This historic village on Lake Meone features a collection of one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. Beginning on Thanksgiving, the lake lights up with 120 Christmas Trees with over 50,000 twinkling lights that dance to holiday tunes. Kids can meet the Magic Talk-

ing Christmas Tree or ride the Smithville Train decked out for the holidays. For the little ones, a visit to Storybook Land is a wonderful holiday tradition. This family-owned and -operated children’s theme park features more than 15 rides and dozens of themed attractions. During the holidays, the park is ablaze with holiday lights and the little ones can visit with Santa.

The entire family can enjoy their favorite holiday classic tunes on the world’s largest pipe organ at the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. Couple the recital with the Curators Tour so you can marvel at this magnificent musical machine. And of course, all the casinos up the glamor and glitz for the holiday season. They all get decked out in their holiday finishings. While kids are not permitted on the casino floor, they are permitted in all the public areas. If you can’t incorporate a visit to Atlantic City into your Thanksgiving Holiday tradition, the holiday family fun continues throughout the season. Check forperformances of the Nutcracker by the Atlantic City Ballet and holiday concerts by the Bay Atlantic Symphony. There is no time like the present to make memories that will last a lifetime. In The Christmas Spirit h “A Gettysburg Christmas” A Heartwarming Movie Set in Historic Gettysburg

November, 2023~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -33-

Gettysburg is known as a historic town famous for the Civil War battle that took place in 1863 and Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. However, you will be pleasantly surprised to know that the town transforms into an enchanting winter wonderland every year during Christmas. Gettysburg perfectly blends its rich American heritage with the spirit of the holidays. It is no surprise Gettysburg was selected to be featured in a new Christmas Movie, A Gettysburg Christmas, set to premiere this holiday Season. The film by Bo Brinkman captures the holiday and historic beauty of Gettysburg and blends it with a heartwarming story similar to the Hallmark variety. A young lady gives up on relationships and Christmas, and it takes a Gettysburg miracle to help mend her heart, trust again, realize the importance of family, and find love. -34- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ November, 2023

A Gettysburg Christmas The movie was filmed in Gettysburg and Adams County locations in late January and February of 2023 and will begin showing in theaters in December. Several Gettysburg establishments, such as the Dobbin House Restaurant & Tavern, Mr. G’s Ice Cream, Farnsworth House Inn, The Christmas Haus, and more, are featured in the movie.

Actors in the show include ● Lee Majors as Charlie ● Kelley Jakle as Hope ● Bruce Boxleitner as Ron Hope’s Dad ● Kate Vernon as Caroline - Hope’s Mom ● Tom Vera as Ryan Hope’s Brother ● Sarah Burkett as Emily ● Sean Faris as Nick

The Plot

As the story unfolds, bro-

ken-hearted Hope buys an apple farm outside the town of Gettysburg, PA. After several years, she is still struggling with heartache and her abrupt life-changing decision to leave her father’s law firm and become an apple farmer. At first, she found peace on the farm, but the loneliness of isolation gradually replaced it. Her father, Ron, is still upset with her for leaving his firm. In the past, it led to a Christmas Eve blowout that has yet to be reconciled. Hope’s ex-fiancé had broken their engagement for another woman a few days before Christmas Eve. Hope has sworn off Christmas and relationships. Hope’s mother, Caroline, brother, Ryan, and his quirky girlfriend, Emily, travel to Gettysburg to have Christmas with Hope whether she likes it or not

and perhaps mend the relationship between her and her father. Ryan’s old Army buddy, Nick, arrives at the farm and is immediately taken with Hope. But Hope isn’t interested. It takes a Christmas miracle in the form of Charley to help mend Hope’s broken heart and allow her to trust again, realize the importance of family, and find love. Much effort went into making the movie look and feel authentic to the town, its history, and the holidays. The scenes shot at Gettysburg’s historic landmarks and buildings, such as the Dobbin House Tavern and the covered bridge, make for stunning visuals that capture the town’s beauty. The movie will surely warm the hearts of many, especially since the public showings will hopefully happen during the Gettysburg Christmas Festival.

The Gettysburg Christmas Festival

Each year, during the first weekend of December, Gettysburg kicks off its Christmas Festival. Main Street Gettysburg hosts the annual event in partnership with various sponsors and community organizations. They provide free activities, shopping, crafts, dining, food,

beverages, and three entertainment stages during the weekend festival.

Other Holiday Events

Several historic sites host special events throughout the holiday season. ● The Shriver House’s Five Christmases event provides a guided tour of the pre-Civil War home and showcases how Christmas was celebrated in the mid-19th century. ● The Christmas Haus will make you feel like you are shopping in a German village. Ornaments, nutcrackers, and other goods imported from German artisans are displayed. ● Take a festive carriage ride through Gettysburg in a horse-drawn carriage with blankets and hot cocoa. If you have the opportunity to watch the movie, A Gettysburg Christmas, you will be reminded of the essence of Christmas - love, togetherness, and traditions. If you visit Gettysburg during the holidays, you will leave with a spirit of Christmas in your heart. November, 2023~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -35-

The Time Warp Express VOLO — The public is invited to hop aboard the Time Warp Express for a Jolly Trolley Adventure to Save Santa this holiday season at the Volo Museum. The museum recently acquired a pair of Molly Trolleys — gorgeous, high-end trolleys on wheels with hand-crafted ash seats, beautiful oak interiors and gleaming brass trim. “The vehicles are fully enclosed and heated for passenger comfort,” said Jim Wojdyla, marketing director for the museum at 27582 Volo Vil-lage Road. “These gleaming, red trol-48- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ November, 2023

leys will be perfect for the very special holiday event we have planned,” Wojdyla said. “Things will start out with a traditional gathering featuring complimentary hot chocolate and cookies with Santa and his elves. But it quickly will turn into an adventurous trolley tour to save Santa.” Tickets for the Jolly Trolley Adventures are available now, in limited number. Those interested may choose from 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. showings Fridays and Saturdays only, from Nov. 10 to Dec. 23. A sneak peek weekend, for museum members only, will be Nov. 3-4. Tickets are $25 each

in November and $29.95 each in December. Children 4 and younger are admitted free, but must sit on a parent’s or guardian’s lap while aboard the trolley. Those attending will begin their adventures in the Grams Central Station, where the aforementioned cook-ies and hot cocoa will be served. Those craving more substantial fare can select from a mouthwatering array of options available for purchase, including pizza, hot dogs, desserts, adult beverages, custom cof-fees, cider drinks and more. “Bring your wish list and

your holiday spirit,” Wojdyla said. “Santa, along with his joyful elves, will eagerly await your arrival.” The museum is collaborating with Woodstock-based Theatre 121 for a top-notch North Pole crew. While at the station, attendees can partake in a complimentary photo session. Then, it’s off to save Santa aboard the Time Warp Express. Why will Santa need saving? Be there to find out! But we can reveal now that the adventure will take trolley riders through the Ice Age, the Jurassic pe-riod, the 1800s and into the modern era, passing everything from helicopters and tanks to giant shopping carts and Radio Flyers along the way. There’s even a stop planned at the museum’s jaw-dropping Jupiter train, providing an unparalleled photo backdrop. That’s not to mention the massive, animated Christmas

“This will be the first of many exciting, themed tour experiences to come.” “The Jolly Trolley Adventure will not only be a feast for the eyes, but also for young minds,” added Wojdy-la. “Santa’s elves will ride along, providing a fun, interactive storytelling experience with surprises that simply won’t be found anywhere else.” light displays and hundreds of uplit trees also be-dazzling the path. Museum Director Brian Grams said the Christmas adventure is a project two years in the making, and will mark the first time that groups are invited to tour the newly developed acreage north of the original muse-um and antique malls property. “People have been asking what it’ll be, asking to venture back there on their own to check it out,” Grams said.

Those interested should secure tickets in advance; sales will close when trolley capacities are reached. For tickets, go to volofun. com, click attractions, then click Volo Museum and find Time Warp Express within the Events & Promos tab. Event tickets are good for the Time Warp Express/Jolly Trolley Adventure only. While the Grams Central Station will be open for ticket holders, the rest of the museum complex — includ-ing the Titanic Exhibit and Jurassic Gardens — closes at 5 p.m. daily.

The 100th Meridian was recognized as the western border of the Osage Indian Reservation, the line that marked the end of the humid East and the beginning of the arid western Great Plains. The line runs from south to north, pole to pole and was defined by John Wesley Powell in 1879. The area became incredibly important to settlers, newly emancipated African Americans, mountain men, gunslingers and calvary after the Civil War as a tangible marker for people seeking to establish new lives in the west.

US Cavalry were sent to Larned. For all its glory the fort was abandoned in 1878. Tours are available and walking through the fort is unique form of time travel.

Fort Larned, one of the best preserved forts in the West, was constructed in 1865-68. The complex consisted of 10 sandstone buildings, 9 of which are still standing. The fort was charged with protecting settlers, railroad workers and the US Mail from Indian raids, maintain peace in the area and guard traffic on the Santa Fe Trail. The 900-mile Santa Fee Trail functioned as an international trade route facilitating the movement of goods, staples and people. retaliatory campaign. The fort closed in 1882 and began use as a soldier’s home in 1890. A portion of the Fort’s land became a settlement known as Dodge in 1865 and a Dodge City in 1872. Legend has it that Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado crossed the Arkansas River in 1541 near Dodge City, followed by explorer Zebulon Pike in 1806. A 38-foot cross marks the location of Coronado’s believed Arkansas River crossing. The cross is situated within a 10-acre prairie. In 1821 William Becknell opened the Santa Fe Trail as a trade route. Henry Sutler constructed a 3-room cabin that became the site for traveling hunters and traders to conduct business.

“A cowboy is a man with guts and a horse.” – William James Between 1872-1874 more than 850,000 buffalo hides and bones were shipped from Dodge and by 1875 the buffalo had been slaughtered. The buffalo trade was replaced by the 5-million cattle driven through Dodge until the 1880s. Originally there was no local law and the military was not mandated to enforce the law. At one time Dodge had the largest number of gunfighters of any frontier town. In 1883 The Dodge City Peace Commission was founded and with it came lawmen such as Bat Masterson, Luke Short Frank McClain, Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp. These personalities were blended to shape the character of the fictional Matt Dillion of Gunsmoke. The show is the longest running western in television history with 635 episodes. “Wake Nicodemus up for the great Jubilee.” African American Spiritual Black people came to the West with the Spanish, later slave owners and in the early 1800s as enslaved workers of the Five Civilized Tribes. After the Civil War freedom was granted but it was nominal. Sharecropping, racially biased laws, constrained movement and the inability to vote hampered equal rights and many African Americans saw migration to the West as a solution to the blatant racism. Pap Singleton, the Moses of the Colored Exodus, headed a group of 300 “Exodusters” to Cherokee County, Kansas. By the 1880s, the end of the Exodus, it is estimated 43,010 African Americans had relocated to Kansas. The first black community west of the Mississippi River was Nicodemus in northwestern Kansas. It is the sole black township that continues as a functioning community. Three-hundred Kentucky settlers arrived in 1877. Sixty people left immediately when they saw the conditions. Within five years they developed into a prosperous, 160-acre, town. Nicodemus declined during the Great Depression and now has a population of twenty. In 1996 the town was inscribed as a National Historic Landmark.

Tours begin in Township Hall where visitor’s view a video and a series of exhibits. There are five structures on the tour. Each site displays an interpretive sign with photos and information. As you leave town there is a small park filled with metal plaques that provide complete information. Grab your huckleberry and embark on an impactful trip to meet legends and interact with icons. #KSmediaevent2023

Small Town Brings More on Michigan

>Here

By Heather Raulerson Freelance Travel Writer

-60- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ November, 2023

A small town on Main Street with millions of colorful lights, window displays that inspire Christmas memories, and shops full of holiday gifts. This Main Street isn’t in New York City but in Rochester, Michigan. This small town brings out a big Holiday Spirit that makes the Christmas season come alive for all visiting. Rochester’s holiday season starts the week of Thanksgiving and keeps on going all the way into January. Come out for the weekend to support the small businesses, bring friends to drink after work, or stroll Main Street to enjoy the lights and displays; whatever you choose, Rochester will put a smile on your face during the holidays.

Large Holiday Spirit Lagniappe The first event kicks off the Rochester holiday season in a big way. With its origins coming from the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lagniappe is a thank-you celebration from the shop owners to their customers. Lagniappe is the Creole word for “a little something extra.” On Monday, November 20th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., downtown Rochester’s merchants celebrate 50 years of Lagniappe. Walking around the town, shops will offer discounts, free samples, and much more during Lagniappe. Santa Claus will also be on hand to meet the little ones, and he’s bringing Mrs. Claus and the reindeer. Come support the lovely small businesses waiting to shower you with gratitude this holiday season. This celebration coincides with the debut of the Big, Bright Light Show.

Big Bright Light Show The Big, Bright Light Show is one of Michigan’s largest Christmas Light displays, with over 1.5 million lights decorating almost every building in downtown Rochester. Each building has a single color of lights covering the facade, from reds, blues, greens, oranges, gold, white, and rainbow colors. The Mainstreet light display is inspired by the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights that ran at Disney’s Hollywood Studios until 2015.

November, 2023~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -61-

The lights will officially light up downtown Rochester on November 20th at 7 p.m. and turn on nightly from 5 p.m. to midnight until January 7th, 2024. In addition to this holiday kick-off event, Santa Claus will be on hand to hear your child’s Christmas wish. New additions to the light display this year include lighted buildings expanded to more blocks, giant snowmen, a Santa train, strolling carolers, nutcrackers, and an ice skating family. I have always enjoyed walking along the buildings, trying to find my favorite color to take selfies. And while you are doing that, you can peruse the fabulously decorated window displays. Each year, there is a Holiday Window contest, and they are a treat to behold. Twenty-two businesses are participating this year. You have to check out the Home Bakery’s window display. They tend to win the Holiday Window Contest every year, and when you see it, you will see why. Anyone who puts in over 150 hours to create edible art masterpieces deserves to win. You can vote for your favorite this year, which will be announced on November 20th at Lagniappe.

A few things to note:

Traffic is extremely heavy before the lights turn on and

-62- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ November, 2023

during the light show. You will encounter stop-and-go traffic entering the downtown area. Please bring your patience when driving and looking at the lights.

Snowman Stroll

To make the holidays even merrier, you can enjoy a snowman stroll in downtown Rochester from December 1st to the 31st. There will be 12 giant fiberglass snowmen designed by local artists displayed along Main Street. The artists get a blank white 5’ tall snowman to add creativity and magic; some paint them while others put them in costumes. The level of talent when they are finished is amazing.

an Christmas market, especially if it snows that day. The market has numerous booths from local artisans and food vendors selling various crafts and food. Walking through the market and smelling the roasted almonds and the fresh pine scent of the wreaths gets you into the holiday spirit quickly. I bought one or two wreaths in the past and can usually finish the rest of my Christmas gift shopping at the Kris Kringle Market. If it is a cold night, sip hot cocoa or apple cider and enjoy roasting marshmallows. While you are out and about, you also might see many people saving their spots for the 2 p.m. December 3rd Hometown Christmas Parade along Main Street.

Cookie Stroll

Kris Kringle Market

For those needing to finish your Christmas Shopping, head to the Kris Kringle Market in downtown Rochester on December 1st from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and December 2nd from noon to 10 p.m. The Kris Kringle Market looks like a Europe-

Another wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season is to participate in Rochester’s Cookie Stroll on December 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can collect 12 cookies at 14 different cookie stations in various shops throughout downtown. Rochester’s bakeries and restaurants bake all the cookies. You can purchase your official Downtown Rochester Cookie Tin from www.downtownrochestermi.com/store before they sell out. If you miss out this year, plan to order your cookie tin early next November.

Neighborhood Light Fight

Do you enjoy driving around neighborhoods during the holidays, admiring the Christmas Light displays, and looking for a Clark Griswald house? Me too! You are in luck because Rochester has its 4th Annual Neighborhood Light Fight from Dec. 1st to the 10th. Street after street lit up so bright you can see them from

space. Plus, you can vote for your favorite street. Stay at the Royal Park Hotel If you want to experience all these holiday activities, stay at the Royal Park Hotel in downtown Rochester. This luxurious hotel is within walking distance of all the above experiences. Plus, during Christmas, you can stay in one of their holiday-themed suites and take photos in their winter

wonderland lobby display. With all of the holiday merriment happening in Rochester, Michigan, you won’t be able to help not be in the Christmas spirit. I hope you and your family have a lovely holiday, and if you want to visit a small town that brings out a big holiday spirit, look no further than Rochester. Happy Holidays, everyone!

Not pilgrims. Americans can thank failing woolen and tobacco industries for the first Thanksgiving. Berkeley, United Kingdon was hit especially hard with desperate times and the town would become the namesake of fresh prosperity in the new world for those who left England to find a better life. When an English expedition landed on the shores of the new continent, offloading brave immigrants to a “a very good and convenient” place, their captain proclaimed the first Thanksgiving and named the land Berkeley. -108- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ November, 2023

Virginia’s Claim to

The year was 1619, and Capt. John Woodliffe piloted his company ship along the Virginia coastline, up the James River, until he found some particularly majestic grounds 24 miles southeast of present-day Richmond. The legend and lore of Thanksgiving is comprised of facts and fantasies, pilgrims and Native Americans, and the joining in friendship and peace. Since kindergarten, students are taught about Puritan William Bradford’s Mayflower and the landing at Plymouth Rock 590 miles to the north in 1620. But, as Woodliffe landed his ship, the Margaret, along the

riverbanks of the Virginia Peninsula he proclaimed the first Thanksgiving through charter one year earlier. “We ordaine* that the day of our ships arrival at the place assigned for plantacon* in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God.” [*sic.] Today at Berkeley Plantation, hundreds of feet from the main house, stands a marble slab sheltered by a small brick encasement. The stone’s inscription gives a brief history

of Captain John Woodliffe and the passengers aboard the Margaret. The path is marked with an arrow and a wooden sign declaring: “To site of first Thanksgiving in America.” Some historians and Thanksgiving fanatics argue the Berkeley Thanksgiving was merely an annual prayer gathering and not a feast. Meanwhile, some historians enjoy speculating about the first meal at Berkeley—thus Thanksgiving—which consisted of bacon, peas, cornbread, and cinnamon water. Thanksgiving became an annual holiday during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and patriotism officially began to intertwine with the feast.

About the Plantation

Berkeley Plantation is load-

ed with history. The property was the site of the first whiskey distillery in the United States (1621). The Georgian mansion built in 1726 was the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Overlooking the river with views toward Richmond, the location saw President Lincoln confer here with General McClelland prior to the Seven Days’ Battles of the American Civil War. After a series of Northern defeats, Union General Daniel Adams Butterfield composed “Taps” on this site. As a family home, Berkeley Plantation served as the birthplace of William Henry Harrison, 9th President of the United States, and ancestral home of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd POTUS.

January 1. Docent-led tours of the home occur on the hour starting at 10:00 a.m. with the last tour at 3:00 p.m. Expect to spend at least two hours touring the house and grounds. Berkeley, like many other plantations, acknowledges its history of slavery. A permanent exhibit on enslaved people was erected in 2018 and Berkeley’s list of enslaved individuals was made public record via local government database. Current owners, the Jamieson family, “support and honor the African American community in their efforts to create their narrative and stand up for equality, respect, and justice.”

Thanksgiving Festival

Every year on the first Sunday in November a Thanksgiving Festival takes place at Berkeley. Activities like bands, singers, and dancers begin after an 11:00 a.m. parade, which features colonial period re-enactors. Juggling demonstrations, games, and crafts keep children entertained throughout the day. An encampment and re-enactment of the Margaret landing brings history to life. Native American dancers invite guests to join in a traditional Friendship Dance, which concludes the day. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the event. The festival started in 1958 and in 1961 formed as a non-profit organization.

For those who like bed and breakfasts, Charles City County has a number of options within easy driving distance. For farmhouse chic the Bed & Breakfast at Peace Hill Farm even offers a stay in a hand-built, turn-of-the-century, chicken house converted into accommodations for up to six.
