Fire and Rescue Area Commander Superintendent Kel McNamara, said crews responded within eight minutes to fi nd the building well alight and had done a remarkable job to bring the fi re under control and prevent further damage. “The challenge was just getting in and fi nding the location – as you can see from the area it was a difficult fi re to fi nd and to attack,” he said. Juliet Barr, the wife of the factory’s owner, told the Weekender her husband had managed to save their forklift and some other essentials before the flames took everything else. “He saved the truck, he saved his car, he saved all our order books and laptops,” Ms Barr said. “There were 10 or 12 guys up there for work today but our machines are all gone. choolies – it’s supposed to be a celebration, a short break marking the end of 13 years of school. But it’s become a drunkfest. A two week free-for-all, full of underage drinkers and teenagers who don’t know when enough is enough. I worked on the Gold Coast for Nine News for many years and have seen fi rst hand just how bad it really is. Night after night, kids – who up until last week were still wearing school uniforms – are planning their days around drinking and partying until dawn. They usually drink in their hotel rooms before going out. And it wasn’t uncommon to see parents dropping their
kids off with a couple of cases of beer amongst the luggage. I’m not saying kids shouldn’t celebrate. And I’m not saying that all kids are badly behaved. But you can’t argue with the pictures we see and the stories we read about in the paper every year. Just this week I saw a photo of an 18-year-old male lying on a hotel ledge 11 storeys above the ground. Apparently he was drunk and climbed out the window looking for some fresh air. How stupid can you get! And it seems things get even more out of control when Aussie schoolies head overseas to celebrate the end of school. and it wasn’t pretty. Teenagers so drunk they can’t talk, groups of boys and girls who have no idea what they’re drinking or eating and illicit drugs for sale in public view. There’s no doubt Bali is a beautiful place to party but it can also be deadly. On average one Australian dies there every nine days. Hundreds more are seriously injured. They’re scary statistics, especially for parents. But if you know the dangers, at least you can talk to your kids before they go and maybe convince them to play it safe. Teenagers should remember schoolies for the great time and great friends – not because they fell asleep in a stairwell or got into a punch up.

our Marrickville fi re fighters of the station’s D Platoon were the fi rst at the scene of a fi re that ripped through a furniture factory at Marrickville on Tuesday. Crew members Mark McFarlane, Dave Nelson, Llewellyn Cameron and Brad Gaylard arrived at the east of the fi re moments before Newtown Fire Station’s D Platoon arrived on the west. Mr McFarlane and his crew of four arrived to fi nd the single-level, 1,200 square-metre, mostly corrugated iron structure well alight at its centre, with thick black smoke and flames already reaching through the roof. The crew immediately began work to contain and observe the situation to protect nearby properties from exposure to the flames before backup arrived. “I asked for 10 stations, which is a ‘fi fth alarm’,” Mr McFarlane said. “There might have already been three stations on the road because of the smoke coming out of it. “Newtown arrived shortly after us, probably within about 30 seconds.” Mr McFarlane said it took about an hour to stop the fi re from spreading outside its original area and aerial appliances were

used like cherry pickers to pump water onto the flames from above. “Everything inside was destroyed except for one section at the front. It’s a furniture manufacturer so they had everything from stains to lacquers and thinners, but mostly wood and a lot of machinery.”
Fellow D Platoon member Dave Nelson said once the blaze was in check, they went inside and put out all the remaining hotspots so it didn’t reignite. He said despite some initial water issues, additional water was sourced with a relay pump from a nearby street.
And despite the severity of the blaze inside the building, they saved a small front section containing raw timber ready for furniture manufacture. “We were able to get water quite fast, that’s what made a difference,” Mr Nelson said.

A new reason to keep fit Alternative approach: fitness equipment will reduce graffiti vandalism VANESSA WATSON
utdoor exercise equipment has been installed at Camperdown Oval as part of Marrickville Council’s ‘alternative approaches to graffiti management’ program. The new facilities were test driven by Mayor Victor Macri on Tuesday who said the equipment will give locals an opportunity to increase their fitness, and at the same time, encourage use of Marrickville’s public spaces. “Th is is a tremendous opportunity for Camperdown Oval users to exercise on professional equipment, free of charge, and in an attractive outdoor setting.” He said by creating more opportunities for park users, community surveillance will also increase and reduce graffiti tagging and opportunistic vandalism. “The idea is that as well as the physical benefits, residents will also benefit from a reduction in unwanted graffiti, as more people will be using the park at varying times of the day.” The project forms part of Council’s graffiti alternatives project plan that, in addition to rapid graffiti removal, aims to reduce unwanted graffiti in the area. It was funded as part of the NSW Government’s Attorney General Justice Department graffiti hotspot crime prevention program. The exercise equipment caters for stretching, aerobic and weight-based exercise for a range of fitness levels. Anyone can use the equipment except for commercial personal trainers.

The Your Baby Can Read! programme is a fun, multisensory approach to teaching language. The programme works so well because it is easy for a child to connect the written word to the word sound, and the meaning of the word. By utilizing this approach to teaching, children have a greater chance at reading success! Your baby will see the words, hear the words, say the words, see images and videos related to the words, the words are always used in context and your child is encouraged to do an action related to the words. Your child will SEE, HEAR, SAY and DO! Your child can learn to read as easily and naturally as he or she learns to talk.

Police issue warning in lead up to Christmas ewtown police are urging people to take extra care to secure their houses and property over the upcoming holiday period. Constable Dave Turner, Crime Prevention Officer for Newtown Local Area Command, said everyone can take simple precautions to ensure their property isn’t targeted by criminals in the lead up to Christmas. “Break-ins have an enormous emotional and fi nancial impact. By taking a few precautionary security measures, you could prevent the need to replace stolen goods, negotiate with insurers, and repair damage to your property,” he said. Police advise that even when you are at home to keep the perimeter of your property secure. It can be tempting to leave a window or door open for ventilation during the summer heat however it does present a security risk. You should consider installing locks that secure the window in the ajar position and always lock both your front and back doors, even when at home. “Th ieves usually look for cash and property that is easy to carry and sell, such as jewellery, electrical goods, cameras, laptops, mobile phones, sunglasses, power tools, CDs and computer equipment. “Garden sheds are also popular targets for thieves, as they are often unlocked and full of power tools or other valuable items,” he said. Constable Turner said police can help keep the community safe, but need public co-operation. “Look out for your neighbours, and be extra aware of what is happening in your area,” he said. The following precautions can help prevent property crime, especially while you are on holidays: • Ensure the house is securely locked, including windows • Cancel newspaper deliveries and redirect your mail or have it collected by a friend • Put pets into a boarding kennel or have friends

He was described as about 175cm tall, with a slim to medium build, dark skin and short dark hair. He was wearing a blue and red tracksuit top with silver-coloured tracksuit pants, white tennis shoes and was carrying a blue sports bag. he battle between natural or astro turf for Dulwich Hill’s Arlington Reserve has resurfaced, with a heated debate at a Marrickville Council meeting ending on Tuesday night with cheers from supporters of a synthetic field. Residents in the packed public gallery included members of local soccer clubs with children in jerseys and people holding placards with slogans like ‘plastic grass again – say no’. Members of the public representing both sides addressed Council. In 2009, the council previously considered upgrading the ground to a synthetic surface but the plan did not go ahead due to widespread opposition and was instead resurfaced with grass at a cost of $272,000. “The simple answer is turf cannot survive with the amount of wear we’re giving it,” Mayor Victor Macri said. “We’ve rebuilt the ground and it’s still in the same state it was then, if not it’s worse.” Sports organiser Laki Konistis, who spoke on behalf of the Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design, said

his school uses Marrickville Oval, which is further to travel to, because it’s in a better state than the “atrocious” Arlington ground. After the meeting, a motion was made by Greens councillors to rescind the resolution for artificial grass and replace it with a commitment to prioritise the maintenance of Arlington Reserve so that “a high quality natural turf can be provided” instead. “Local residents were completely ambushed by this move from Mayor Macri,” Greens Cr Melissa Brooks said. Cr Brooks said the move to go ahead with artificial turf on Arlington was an “extraordinary show of bad faith” and pointed to speakers’ concerns on Tuesday night. “They are all residents who are really distressed and I think the lack of respect they were shown when speaking by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor was pretty appalling.” The rescission motion means no action can be taken by Council to implement the resolution for an artificial playing field at Arlington until the rescission motion is considered on December 4.

Locals say no to violence against women
A playgroup of kids and parents at Multi Mix Mob Marrickville, swearing an oath against domestic violence. VANESSA WATSON
oday marks the third White Ribbon Day in Marrickville to help take a stand against domestic violence. National White Ribbon Day is this Sunday, November 25, and encourages men to actively speak up against violence against women. However, locals will gather today at 10am at Marrickville PCYC on Illawarra Road to make their stand. Marrickville’s White Ribbon Day organiser, Nicole Ryan, said she hopes the family-friendly day will help victims of and witnesses to domestic abuse to seek assistance. Supporters are also encouraged to take a pledge to uphold the rights of women to live in peace and not to remain silent about violence when they see it. “If you’re a neighbour, you don’t have to walk up
T
and say anything, but you can get on the phone and tell the police,” Ms Ryan said. As part of a campaign in the lead up to White Ribbon Day, supporters of the Marrickville event have sent photos of themselves holding signs swearing oaths against domestic violence, with some from as far as the United States. “The response this year has been overwhelming. We’ve got about 35 organisations that will have tables [here],” she said. “We’ve got the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, the high school, the old men from Aboriginal men’s group who are coming, having that inter generational impact. We want to break the cycle of domestic violence.” Police officers from Marrickville local area command will attend the event. There will be a free BBQ, local high school performances, an Aboriginal art auction and exhibition and give-aways.
Marrickville and Ashfield Councils call for developer contributions for GreenWay Marrickville and Ashfield Councils have together called for developer contributions from the Allied Mills development to be prioritised toward constructing of a key section of the GreenWay. The call follows a report by the Director General of Planning and Infrastructure, which dismissed the two council’s recommendations, because, “there is no certainty the GreenWay will eventuate”. Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri labelled the decision “a missed opportunity” because contributions from the Allied Mills development could be used to connect a strategic section of the GreenWay. “There is potential with this one development alone to give something back to the community on a very large scale,” Cr Macri said. “We’re talking about a project backed by thousands of locals living in the inner west who for more than 14 years have lobbied in support of the GreenWay and who more broadly support council’s policy for more sustainable transport options.”

n interesting new blend out of McLaren Vale’s Kangarilla Road is made up of three varieties that are each delightful on their own, but have come together here in a marvelously rewarding drop under a label dubbed Terzetto. “The name is Italian for ‘threesome’,” said winemaker, Kevin O’Brian of his blend of 45 per cent Sangiovese, 35 per cent Primitivo and 20 per cent Nebbiolo. “The latter has an intense rose and tannin structure to it, while the Sangiovese and Primitivo add spicy cherry and plum. “It means that on the palate white and black cherries are dominant along with rose hip, spicy plums and nuances of cardamom, with rustic fruit tannins culminating in a wine with incredible lingering flavours that seem to go on forever.” Certainly it’s an unusual blend and we’re sure the 2010 won’t be Kevin’s one and only foray with it. Pay $22 and enjoy with Italian sausages and a garlic mash. One for lunch: Coonawarra’s Rymill has released a 2012 The Yearling Sauvignon Blanc, a wine from an exceptional vintage that produced white wines of crisp acidity and wonderful varietal definition in time for lighter summery meal-time enjoyment.
Best summed-up as crisp, rich and zesty, it’s got beautiful varietal tropical fruit influences and a hint of zingy pink guava on the palate, which leads into a longlasting zesty lemon and lime finish. Little wonder winemaker Sandrine Gimon sums it up as “an outstanding example of Australian Sauvignon Blanc”. At $15.95 it’s one that’ll prove great on the table with all manner of seafoods or a Caesar salad.

psychology. “We stay with the family from the beginning to the end,” Mr Cruz said. “We have a policy that the person with the fi rst contact with the family helps them through the whole funeral process. “We provide a premium service, with affordable packages. We want to be a community-based funeral home.” Divinity is also multi-lingual, with 11 languages spoken by staff including Greek,

Are you always feeling tired? Q. I’m always tired and never seem to have any energy. Could you give me some ideas to give me a boost? A. Low energy is one of the main complaints I hear from my patients. Here are my top 10 tips: 1. Have a blood test to check for anaemia and low thyroid function. Both these conditions will make you feel tired and washed out. 2. Eat more protein – good quality protein such as eggs, fish, lean beef, lamb, pork and chicken give you sustained energy, much more than carbohydrates like bread, rice and pasta. Try and have some protein at breakfast, lunch and dinner and you will feel the difference. 3. Get enough sleep – if you’re not getting enough sleep on a regular basis (eight hours a night), you are building up a sleep debt. In other words your body is getting more and more tired as the days go by. If you suffer from sleep problems or insomnia try using herbs such as chamomile, hops, kava or valerian. 4. Drink two litres of water every day – believe it or not, simply being dehydrated makes you feel tired! 5. Get some exercise – regular exercise is a great way to build energy. Try walking for 40 minutes four times a week and you’ll be amazed how much more energy you have as you

get fitter. 6. Stop stressing and relax more! There’s nothing more exhausting than being stressed. Make time to do the things you love and relax you – reading, gardening, listening to music or yoga. 7. Take supplements – a number of vitamins and minerals can give you a powerful energy boost – especially magnesium, B vitamins and CoQ10. 8. Eat regularly – every three hours. Low blood sugar is a major cause of fatigue. Eat healthy snacks such as a small handful of raw nuts, hommus dip with carrot sticks, or a small tub of low fat yogurt. 9. Have regular habits – we feel best when we have regularity in our lives – go to bed and get up at the same time, eat at the same time etc. 10. Have fun! Having fun with friends and family, enjoying a good laugh and seeing the lighter side of life all boost your energy and make you feel good, so make sure you are spending 30 minutes each day taking pleasure in fun activities.

veryone wants a bit of strength, from lifting boxes to opening a jar lid, strength is something it’s good to have lots of. So how can we build it? Take a leaf out of Milo’s book. Not the chocolate flavoured sugar milo – the Milo of greek antiquity. The legend goes that every day, Milo lifted a small calf into his arms and carried the calf a certain distance. As the calf grew into a bull, Milo continued his training. On the fi rst day of the Olympics, Milo walked the length of the track while carrying a full-grown bull. Legend or not even back then they understood the principle of progressive overload: fi nd the weight you can safely lift but still struggle a bit with. Free weight will give your body the most adaptation. For example, who would be stronger overall? Someone laying on a leg press machine pushing 500kg up and down a fi xed sled or imagine Milo standing up with 500kg of squirming, moving calf on his back! Free weight requires you to do all the stabilisation and control a machine takes away. Your big basic moves like squats, deadlifts and clean and press work well. Here are some tips: Keep it simple, train barefoot if you can. The less material there is between your feet and the floor when you lift, the more muscle your body can activate. If your gym requires footwear, thin-soled

sneakers or vibrams are good. Rest three to five minutes between sets of exercise. To lift at your strongest, your body needs to regenerate as much ATP (the fuel source for muscle contractions) as possible. Take the time to feel fully recovered before you attempt any personal record on a lift. The big muscle fibres are the strongest but the slowest to recover, so if you start the next set too quickly they will still be resting. You may as well be doing aerobics. Warm up well but don’t exhaust yourself. Leave the strength for your main lifts. Do a specific warm up. Don’t waste 10 minutes on a rower to warm up for heavy squats. Warm up over two to three progressively heavier sets. Keep your main sets around five repetitions. Just remember whether you’re 18 or 80 the principle is the same, make sure the last rep of whatever you’re doing is the absolute last rep your body can do. You will get strong!

NEW PLAY TAKES A HARD LOOK INTO THE MIRROR A
play exploring the confronting issue of gender transition premiered at Newtown’s King Street Theatre yesterday, with a cast of talent including Marrickville’s Amber Robinson. ‘Into the Mirror’, penned by Revesby playwright Shelley Wall, sees Ms Robinson in the role of Melanie, who after 18 months in the UK, arrives home to discover her mother, Sally, is a complete stranger and struggles with the universal question we all ask ourselves: “What am I going to do without my mum?” As she grapples with the change; she laments that, “I’ve already got a father. I want my mother at my wedding, not some freak”. Starring Penny Day, Helen Stuart, Carole Sharkey-Waters and Katie Lees, Ms Wall said she wrote ‘Into The Mirror’ after becoming enthralled in the journey of a friend and colleague who had the courage to become the gender she should always have been. “I wanted to write a play that celebrated identity and acceptance,” Ms Wall said. “I believe the characters and the story will touch the audience as their issues and weaknesses are human frailties we have all experienced either personally or through someone we love. This is the key to Into the Mirror: the courage to be yourself.” ‘Into the Mirror’ produced by Ms Wall is now on at the King Street Theatre, corner of King and Bray Streets, South Newtown. Shows are on from November 21 until Deember 15. For bookings or more information see www.kingstreettheatre. com.au or call 9119 3739.

here have been a few whispers lately… the words ‘Neil Young’ and ‘Crazy Horse’, have been coupled tantalisingly with the word ‘tour’. In the know fans have seen news about shows overseas and waited with growing anticipation for the official word. The good news is the announcement has been made, it is official and Neil Young and Crazy Horse are on their way to Sydney for an arena show in March of next year. With one show in each major location around Australia, the tour is one of Neil Young’s most extensive yet. The tour will be Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s first headliner since 2003’s critically acclaimed Greendale shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Crazy Horse, comprising of Billy Talbot (bass), Ralph Molina (drums) and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro (guitar), was recently described by Neil Young in his autobiography as “a vehicle to cosmic areas that I am unable to traverse with others”. The March 2013 shows promise to showcase both new material from their recently released album ‘Psychedelic Pill’ and the classic hits that helped make Neil Young a household name. Without a doubt the hype surrounding the Australian tour dates so far illustrates just how Neil Young continues to pull massive crowds five decades into his impressive career. The Hollywood Reporter wrote of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s October Hollywood Bowl concert: “The made-for-
each other singer and band seamlessly meld old and new amid a relentless, outstanding torrent of beautiful noise”. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted: “This tour serves as a reminder of how [Neil] became the Godfather of Grunge, and going on 67, he will still out-grunge anyone who gets in his path”.
The LA Times’ glowing review painted vivid pictures that will have Aussie fans counting down to March 2013, including that of Neil Young, “hunched over his Gibson electric guitar – known affectionately as “Old Black” – strangling notes out of its neck while standing in front of a Fender amp as big as the Ritz”.

CHATTER ON THE BOX WITH NATHAN TAYLOR F
oxtel must’ve read this column a few weeks back in regards to finding a new host of ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ because this week they hired former Miss Universe and downright babe Jennifer Hawkins to front the popular franchise. Hawkins comes to the show with plenty of hosting experience including ‘The Great Outdoors’ and ‘Make Me A Supermodel’, but what she’ll really bring to the program is star-power. The show didn’t go to air this year because they simply had no host. Foxtel Executive Director of Television, Brian Walsh said: “We are thrilled to bring ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ back to Australian television screens with such a star as Jennifer. Jennifer represents everything all models aspire to be. She’s successful, popular, hardworking and has truly made her mark in this country”. Production for the new series of ‘Australia’s
Next Top Model’ with Hawkins at the helm begins in February. ‘Ten News’ will look very different in 2013 with more popular news presenters given the axe due to network costcutting over the past week. Veteran newsreaders Ron Wilson and Bill Woods, sports presenter Rob Canning and female newsreader Helen Kapalos have all been shown the door after years with the network. Ten have had a disastrous few years in getting their news coverage right and this latest move in getting rid of experienced journos just baffles me and puts them further behind leaders Seven and Nine. The news just keeps getting worse for one Aussie starlet – Rachael Taylor. Her latest series ‘666 Park Avenue’, airing
on FOX8, has just been axed in the US following dwindling ratings. This is the third straight series Taylor has fronted that has failed to make its mark on American television. A remake of the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ franchise and a Sarah Jessica Parker produced show ‘Washingtonienne’ were her other bombs. Maybe it’s time Taylor heads back to Australian soil… I hear ‘Home and Away’ is holding auditions soon.
owner of Miami’s most glamorous hotel, the Miramar Playa. Evans is forced to make an ill-fated deal with Miami mob boss Ben Diamond to ensure the success of his glitzy establishment. The beautiful Marias plays the mob boss’ wife, Lily Diamond, who enjoys getting a bit frisky with people other than her husband. Catch up on the first two episodes on Foxtel’s Go app, and catch the rest of the series Wednesday nights on SoHo.
On the bright side news isn’t all bad for Aussies in the US because former ‘Packed to the Rafters’ actress, Jessica Marais (pictured), is kicking goals in her new show ‘Magic City’. The first episode premiered on SoHo last week and I must say I absolutely loved it. Set in 1959 Miami, Florida shortly after the Cuban Revolution, ‘Magic City’ tells the story of Ike Evans, the
Speaking of ‘Packed to the Rafters’, season six, which is scheduled to air early 2013 will only have 12 episodes, down from 22 in season five. It’s understood Channel Seven are yet to make a decision on the future of ‘Rafters’ which lost its mojo after most of the main cast left the program to pursue other interests. I am not sure if the show will be salvaged.

Time in Motion Celebrate the best of The Australian Ballet with photographs, film, designs and costumes from its 50 year history. Time in Motion highlights the company’s most memorable works, including Swan Lake from 1962 and The Display from 1964. The exhibition celebrates the diversity of Australian ballet and the innovative nature of Australian choreographers, as they modernise classic ballets. The free exhibition will run until February 10 at the State Library. For more information visit www.sl.nsw. gov.au.
Wicked Women Treat your eyes to award-winning artist Rosemary Valadon’s latest exhibition, ‘Wicked Women: An exhibition by Rosemary Valadon’. This exhibition features portraits of contemporary women, such as author and model Tara Moss, inspired by the colourful, sexy and kitsch art of the pulp fiction era. Embracing and subverting genre stereotypes, Valadon’s subjects each recreate poses of classic film posters or book covers featuring female criminals. ‘Wicked Women’ runs on weekends until April 28 next year, from 10am to 5pm at the Justice and Police Museum. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more details visit www.hht.net.au.
On the Face of It and Other Body Parts Be amazed by the art of Hank Spirek, a figurative artist born in Chicago, in the solo exhibition ‘On the Face of It and Other Body Parts’, which brings together works exploring facial expressions and the torso, measuring the human state of disorder. The works are a combination of paintings, drawings and sculptures. Catch ‘On the Face of It and Other Body Parts’ from Tuesday to Saturday until November 24 at the Salerno Gallery in Glebe. For more information visit www. salernogallery.com.
Beautiful One Day Listen to the stories of community members about the death of a Palm Island local whilst in police custody in the theatrical documentary ‘Beautiful One Day’. Presented by three theatre companies (Belvoir, Ilbijerri and version 1.0), ‘Beautiful One Day’ turns outrage into understanding and acts as an antidote to relentlessly negative media coverage. Made through conversation, argument, long walks and frequent eruptions of joyfulness, this is a show about what an honest talk might really look like. ‘Beautiful One Day’ is on from Saturday, November 17 until Sunday, December 23 at the Belvoir Theatre. Full price tickets are $62. For further details visit www.belvoir.com.au.
Deck the Walls Add some colour to your week by visiting the ‘Deck the Walls’ exhibition, the final 2012 exhibition for Stella Downer Fine Art. Featuring new artwork by Filomena Coppola, Viola Dominello, Rachel Fairfax, Ashley Frost, Merrick Fry, Miki Kubo, Ishbel Morag Miller and Liz Shreeve, ‘Deck the Walls’ captures the spirit of the season. The exhibition runs until Saturday, December 15 at Stella Downer Fine Art in Waterloo. Entry is free. For details visit www.stelladownerfineart. com.au.

A new driver training program is being implemented in Oz NATHAN TAYLOR
olvo Car Australia is supporting a new driver training partnership with The Formula Company at Sydney Motorsport Park. New driving training courses specifically aimed at developing drivers’ attitudes and skills will use new learning frameworks originally pioneered in the UK. The new courses will be delivered at the Eastern Creek venue with the support of Volvo Car Australia. These new courses advocate a fundamental shift away from teaching people the rules of the roads, or how to control a slide, into a refreshing combination of the latest skills-based training, risk management, decision making and practical learning. In other words, systematically and thoroughly considering all aspects of what goes into making a safe driver. The Formula Company is bringing this approach to the Driver Training Centre at Sydney Motorsport Park using new research in the areas of behavioural psychology, biomechanics, and human movement. Volvo Car Australia have provided a fleet of seven C30 and S60 Volvos which will be used to teach young drivers the fundamentals of safe driving in the world’s safest cars. Th is includes teaching the importance and application of many of the active and passive safety features found in modern

cars, such as stability control and ABS, as well as pedestrian safety and crash avoidance technologies, like Volvo’s world-fi rst City Safety system. The fleet of Volvos are available for anyone with an L-plate or above to drive on the purpose built wet/dry skidpan at the Driver Training Centre within Sydney Motorsport Park. The instructors are certified to teach anyone from L-plates up, and come from a variety of backgrounds including
careers in the police force, corporate and vocational teaching. With low instructor-to-student ratios and an innovative combination of theory and practical teaching, the courses are highly engaging, entertaining and most importantly, memorable. They may well make a big difference when a critical moment comes on the road. For details of the program visit their website: www.sydneymotorsportpark. com.au.

he silver medal that Marrickville Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor Mario Sergio Yokoyama won at a Los Angeles tournament this month was barely into the trophy cabinet before four of his pupils claimed medals of their own in Melbourne last weekend. Mr Yokoyama, 33, the head jiu jitsu teacher at the Gracie Oceania Training Centre at Marrickville, won silver in the IBJJF World No-Gi Jiu Jitsu tournament in the feather weight division on November 4 up against more than 1,000 international competitors. And, members of the Marrickville academy won a gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the Pan Pacific Brazilian Jiu Jitsu championships 2012 at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre recently. “It’s amazing how fast they improve,” Mario said of his students. Born to a self-described ‘judo family’ of four generations in Brazil, Mr Yokoyama started judo at age six, later picking up jiu jitsu at 13. “Jiu jitsu is more specialising in self defense, so a small person can still defeat a larger person using techniques and leverage,” he said.

The team at Gracie Oceania Training Centre have won a swag of medals recently.
“It’s about how to use your opponent’s strength against them. Like when you want to lift a car and you use a small instrument, a jack. A small body can work like a jack under the car.” Gold medal winner Hope Douglas, 22, of Newtown, who is also the Marrickville centre’s womens’ jiu jitsu instructor, said it felt great to bring home the gold in the under 71kg weight division. “There was a very high standard amongst

the girls in Melbourne,” Ms Douglas said. Asked what attracted her to martial arts, Ms Douglas said jiu jitsu is a great way for women to learn practical self defense as it trains smaller people to defeat larger opponents. “Jiu jitsu involves throwing and take downs. Once you get to the ground, it’s mainly groundwork and grappling. The fight starts on your feet, but 95 per cent of the fight is on the ground.”
