WES OPENS UP ABOUT FINDING HIS TRUE SELF
03
In a raw and honest interview with NATHAN TAYLOR, Wes Carr reveals details of his bitter split with Sony, and his journey of re-discovery...
W
es Carr was so unhappy post ‘Australian Idol’ that he could barely stand the sound of his own name. “I think because with the name ‘Wes Carr’ there’s a certain amount of celebrity involved with that title,” he said. “When you drink a Coke you know what you are getting. With Wes Carr, it sounds strange, it’s my name but I’m not that musically – it was almost created for me. “When a major label comes in they take your talent I suppose, and they kind of create this thing around you which you become swept up in that doesn’t necessarily align with who you are.” Wes admitted after winning ‘Australian Idol’ in 2008 and signing to Sony Music, he started to become a caricature of himself and didn’t feel at all comfortable with the direction his career was heading in. “I’m all about writing music that reveals a part of my personality and that was not coming across and that was what I was frustrated the most with,” Wes said. “There was no communication with anybody, it was just hits and hits and hits, get your song on the radio and go around and round and round. I couldn’t go through with that anymore – it just didn’t feel right. “When I was doing interviews and the radio announcer would say ‘and it’s Wes Carr!’ I would cringe at the name because it just wasn’t really what I wanted to do. I was doing 14 hours of interviews a day, I was getting on flights and you forget yourself in that arena… you kind of get sucked into this vortex of this hyped awareness.” Wes released one album through Sony

Music, ‘The Way The World Looks’, after ‘Idol’ but that was it. Not long after, Wes and his label had a falling out after Sony approached him to record a covers album. “When the major label turned around and said ‘we want a covers record’ I said ‘f**k that, I’m not doing a covers album’,” Wes explained. “I’d worked that hard, [only] to get to a point where they didn’t want to believe in my music, they wanted to release something I was totally against. The reason I got into music was to write music. So, I decided to leave all of that and recreate something new that I’m happy and most comfortable with.” In November 2011, Wes and Sony parted ways and the 30-year-old made the bold choice to go back to his independent roots where he felt most comfortable at – he even decided to change his stage name along the way. Buffalo is Wes’ latest project which sees him return to his organic singer/songwriter roots and is an intimate and natural fit with folk and alternative country overtones, that lets his music speak for itself. “I’ve always been obsessed with different cultures,” Wes said. “The Native American Indians believed if they dreamt of a buffalo they would return back to their heritage, back to their roots. “Since I was 14 I’ve been playing gigs around Sydney-town playing acoustic music and folk. I just thought I needed to get back to what I started doing, and now I’m basically on the long but steady road of recreating something I feel most honest doing.” Buffalo (Wes) released his debut EP ‘Blood and Bone’ back in August and admits he couldn’t be happier, feeling far more free and

I said f**k that, I’m not doing a covers album inspired than ever before. “Since I changed my name I’ve gone back to writing four songs a day and I’ve felt more inspired again,” he said. “I felt like I hit this serious roadblock with this ‘Wes Carr’ character that I couldn’t do anything, I just felt constricted and in my own prison.” Wes said he doesn’t regret auditioning and ultimately winning ‘Australian Idol’ because it allowed him to get an insight into an industry that can promise so much but deliver so little. “I had a bit of a brain explosion and went on ‘Idol’ because I was always quite negative with it and thought who am I to say this, who am I am to be this lounge room critic like everyone else,” he said.
“I went on it because I was so curious about how it all worked but really, at the end of the day, it was a funny move. It ended up being a great experience for me because now I have that knowledge of knowing all these other ways of getting into the industry. I’m glad I got out of it early, without having to do a cheesy covers album.”

LOVE, COMEDY AND MUSIC
L
ove, comedy and melodrama are the lifeblood of opera, and can be found in spades in an upcoming performance by Penrith Symphony Orchestra at the Q Theatre, Penrith. In a new venture for the orchestra, the program includes a complete, semi-staged opera in addition to a selection of operatic highlights. The short opera ‘La serva padrona’ is a witty tale of deception and seduction, written by the 18th century Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. The work is being presented for the first time in Penrith
in a production conceived by Michelle Foreman – herself an operatic soprano who has performed and directed in Australia and the United Kingdom, and now teaches at the Penrith Conservatorium of Music. The production stars up-and-coming opera singers Alexander Knight and Jenny Liu, as the gentleman bachelor Uberto and his conniving maid Serpina. As the drama unfolds, the arrogant maid schemes to trick her master into marrying her so that she may become the mistress of the household. Local actors Ethan Fitzpatrick and Alissa Lancuba assist Serpina with her scheming. The light-hearted and engaging work is a masterpiece in miniature and will be a performance not to be missed. Operatic Favourites will be conducted by the orchestra’s artistic director, Paul Terracini, and can be heard at the Q Theatre on Saturday, December 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $40. To book or for more information call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

ond. James Bond. The world’s most loved spy returns for his 23rd official movie in one of the year’s biggest releases, ‘Skyfall’. In ‘Skyfall’, Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. ‘Skyfall’ has already beaten ‘Harry Potter’ to claim the highest grossing opening week in UK history, taking roughly $56.6 million in Australian currency. Daniel Craig returns as the suave Brit with a licence to kill, and this 007 incarnation is far better than the last, ‘Quantum of Solace’. Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (‘American Beauty’) takes the best of the Bond traditions and adds his own style to ‘Skyfall’, bringing back the grit of Craig’s first outing as 007 in ‘Casino Royale’. The film’s villain is the enigmatic Javier Bardem (‘No Country for Old Men’). He is flamboyant, flirty and the perfect foil for our hero. ‘Skyfall’ is out now and is rated M.

he crude, rude and hilarious comedy ‘Ted’ launches on DVD and Blu-ray this week. ‘Family Guy’ creator Seth MacFarlane brings his boundary-pushing brand of humour to the big screen for the first time as writer, director and voice star of ‘Ted’. In the live action/CG-animated comedy, he tells the story of John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a grown man who must deal with the cherished teddy bear who came to life as the result of a childhood wish... and has refused to leave his side ever since. Also starring Mila Kunis as Bennett’s long-suffering girlfriend, ‘Ted’ is a comedy that’s so wrong it’s right. ‘Family Guy’ fans will love this outrageously silly laugh-fest more than most. Wahlberg and MacFarlane have a great chemistry, and their cringe-worthy antics will force awkward chuckles out of all viewers. Occasionally offensive and sometimes surprisingly heart-warming, ‘Ted’ is a raunchy comedy for the grown-ups.

Powerhouse vocalist, song-writer and producer Alicia Keys is back with her fifth studio album, ‘Girl on Fire’. Keys, whose previous chart-topping hits include ‘No One’, ‘Fallin’, ‘Karma’, ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ and ‘Empire State of Mind’ with Jay-Z, was inspired by her marriage to music-producer husband Swizz Beatz and the birth of her son Egypt to write ‘Girl on Fire’. The album’s title track was released as the first single back in September, and features Trinidadian rap icon Nicki Minaj. ‘Girl on Fire’ has received positive reviews, and reached the Top 20 charts in Australia. Collaborating with a number of artists, both in song-writing and performances, Keys had a far greater role in the production of this album than any of her previous offerings. The second track, behind a short intro, ‘Brand New Me’ was written with Scottish singer Emeli Sande, famous for songs such as the hit ‘Next to Me’. ‘Brand New Me’ is essentially a mini-biography of Keys’
life. Sande also co-wrote two other tracks for the album, ‘Not Even the King’ and ‘101’. Keys and Sande have previously worked together on the song ‘Hope’ from Sande’s album ‘Our Version of Evenst’. Bruno Mars is also an album collaborator, co-writing the song ‘Tears Always Win’. ‘Girl on Fire’ by Alicia Keys is out now.

n interesting new blend out of McLaren Vale’s Kangarilla Road is made up of three varieties that are each delightful on their own, but have come together here in a marvelously rewarding drop under a label dubbed Terzetto. “The name is Italian for ‘threesome’,” said winemaker, Kevin O’Brian of his blend of 45 per cent Sangiovese, 35 per cent Primitivo and 20 per cent Nebbiolo. “The latter has an intense rose and tannin structure to it, while the Sangiovese and Primitivo add spicy cherry and plum. “It means that on the palate white and black cherries are dominant along with rose hip, spicy plums and nuances of cardamom, with rustic fruit tannins culminating in a wine with incredible lingering flavours that seem to go on forever.”

Certainly it’s an unusual blend and we’re sure the 2010 won’t be Kevin’s one and only foray with it. Pay $22 and enjoy with Italian sausages and a garlic mash. One for lunch: Coonawarra’s Rymill has released a 2012 The Yearling Sauvignon Blanc, a wine from an exceptional vintage that produced white wines of crisp acidity and wonderful varietal definition in time for lighter summery meal-time enjoyment. Best summed-up as crisp, rich and zesty, it’s got beautiful varietal tropical fruit influences and a hint of zingy pink guava on the palate, which leads into a long-lasting zesty lemon and lime finish. Little wonder winemaker Sandrine Gimon sums it up as “an outstanding example of Australian Sauvignon Blanc”. At $15.95 it’s one that’ll prove great on the table with all manner of seafoods or a Caesar salad.

TAJ OF THE VALLEY
t is 7pm on a Wednesday night and High Street is almost deserted. The people left in the streets stroll past the quaint shop fronts, not bothering to look inside. However, little do they know that through the doors of one of these shop fronts that blend into the background is an Indian paradise, known only by a select few, tantalising the taste buds of anyone who steps through their door. Known by regulars for its authentic and delicious Indian cuisine, Taj of the Valley is the perfect place for any dining situation from a quiet meal for two to a large family gathering. As you breathe in the aroma of real Indian spices, choosing just a few dishes from the menu is exceptionally difficult as you find yourself wanting to sample a little bit of everything. The menu offers a range of entrées that sound good enough to make your mouth water so, for a taste of everything, the mixed platter is the obvious choice. As the dishes are placed on the table, it is hard to imagine that the freshly made-to-order entrées taste as good as they smell but one bite into the fresh Samosas, succulent Seekh Kebab, tender Chicken Tikka and delicious Vegetable Pakoras proves that they do. For mains, the much-loved Butter Chicken is one of the best that you will ever try and the
presentation is enough to make you go back for more. Many of the dishes, like the East Indian Curry, cooked in 26 roasted spices, can be cooked with the meat of your choice however be sure to ask the helpful wait staff for their opinion on which to choose. There are options for the seafood lovers and there is an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu offering the freshest vegetable and lentil curries that money can buy. Accompany your meal with a traditional drink such as the Mango Lassie and a selection of the many side dishes available. If you are lucky enough to book a table on a quiet night at Taj of the Valley, you can witness the cooking of Naan Bread, a delicious complement to any meal, in the unique tandoori oven; the perfect end to a wonderful night. Taj of the Valley is open for dinner from Monday to Saturday 5.30pm to 9.30pm. KING OF COOL IS HEADING TO THE WEST

avid Campbell is one of Australia’s most-loved personalities. He’s the son of an Aussie music legend, he co-hosts a popular morning show on Channel Nine and he’s released a countless number of hit albums. Audiences will be able to see David Campbell doing what he does best when he performs the ultimate classics of years gone by during his ‘Let’s Go Saturday Night Live’ tour at Blacktown Workers Club next Saturday, December 1. David’s likable persona makes him famous for his energetic live shows and he’ll once again be bringing his fans some of his all-time favourite songs to the western Sydney stage. David will be performing tracks such as ‘Tainted Love’, ‘I’m Your Man’ and ‘Shout To The Top’ from his 80’s inspired album ‘Let’s Go’. In addition, he’ll be keeping the party rocking with hits from his top 10 platinum selling albums ‘The Swing Sessions’, ‘The Swing Sessions 2’ and 60’s tribute record
‘Good Lovin’’. “The shows I’ve already done so far on this tour have been really good fun, we even had a moshpit started by an 80-year-old at a recent show,” David told FYI. “The night will be filled with music from the 60’s and 80’s as well as the swing genre – it’s just a big night out!” The 39-year-old got his start in the entertainment industry during the mid-90’s as a theatre star both here in Australia and on Broadway. During his time in New York David received glowing reviews from the local critics with Time Out New York claiming he was “creating the biggest buzz since Streisand”. David’s Broadway success led to more high profile roles in the US and Australia, starring in such musicals as ‘Les Miserables’, ‘South Pacific’, ‘Guys and Dolls’ and popular Aussie production ‘Shout! The Legend of the Wild One’. After many years away from the theatre
stage to concentrate on his music and television work, David said he misses plenty of things from his former life. “I absolutely miss it, there’s something about the rehearsal process and sharing the stage,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun having that collaborative effort and being directed and told what to do. When you’re touring, like I am now, the onus

is really on you. You’re it and there’s a lot of pressure.” Don’t miss the hugely talented David Campbell when he performs some of music’s most famous songs live at Blacktown Workers Club next Saturday, December 1 at 8pm. oxtel must’ve read this column a few weeks back in regards to finding a new host of ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ because this week they hired former Miss Universe and downright babe Jennifer Hawkins to front the popular franchise. Hawkins comes to the show with plenty of hosting experience including ‘The Great Outdoors’ and ‘Make Me A Supermodel’, but what she’ll really bring to the program is star-power. The show didn’t go to air this year because they simply had no host. Foxtel Executive Director of Television, Brian Walsh said: “We are thrilled to bring ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ back to Australian television screens with such a star as Jennifer. Jennifer
The news just keeps getting worse for one Aussie starlet – Rachael Taylor. Her latest series ‘666 Park Avenue’, airing on FOX8, has just been axed in the US following dwindling ratings. This is the third straight series Taylor has fronted that has failed to make its mark on American television. A remake of the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ franchise and a Sarah Jessica Parker produced show ‘Washingtonienne’ were her other bombs. Maybe it’s time Taylor heads back to Australia… I hear ‘Home and Away’ is auditioning. On the bright side news isn’t all bad for Aussies in the US because former ‘Packed to the Rafters’ actress, Jessica Marais (pictured), is kicking goals in her new show ‘Magic City’. The first episode premiered on SoHo last
week and I must say I absolutely loved it. Set in 1959 Miami, Florida shortly after the Cuban Revolution, ‘Magic City’ tells the story of Ike Evans, the owner of Miami’s most glamorous hotel, the Miramar Playa. Evans is forced to make an ill-fated deal with Miami mob boss Ben Diamond to ensure the success of his glitzy establishment. The beautiful Marias plays the mob boss’ wife, Lily Diamond, who enjoys getting a bit frisky with people other than her husband. Catch up on the first two
eps on Foxtel’s Go app, and catch the rest of the series Wednesday nights on SoHo. Speaking of ‘Packed to the Rafters’, season six, which is scheduled to air early 2013 will only have 12 episodes, down from 22 in season five. It’s understood Channel Seven are yet to make a decision on the future of ‘Rafters’ which lost its mojo after most of the main cast left the program to pursue other interests.

‘Ten News’ will look very different in 2013 with more popular news presenters given the axe due to network cost-cutting over the past week. Veteran newsreaders Ron Wilson and Bill Woods, sports presenter Rob Canning and female newsreader Helen Kapalos have all been shown the door after years with the network. Ten have had a disastrous few years in getting their news coverage right and this latest move in getting rid of experienced journos just baffles me and puts them further behind leaders Seven and Nine.

T
here have been a few whispers lately… the words ‘Neil Young’ and ‘Crazy Horse’, have been coupled tantalisingly with the word ‘tour’. In the know fans have seen news about shows overseas and waited with growing anticipation for the official word. The good news is the announcement has been made, it is official and Neil Young and Crazy Horse are on their way to Sydney for an arena show in March 2013. With one show in each major location around Australia, the tour is one of Neil Young’s most extensive yet. The tour will be Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s first headliner since 2003’s critically acclaimed Greendale shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Crazy Horse, comprising of Billy Talbot (bass), Ralph Molina (drums) and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro (guitar), was recently described by Neil Young in his autobiography as “a vehicle to cosmic areas that I am unable
to traverse with others”. The March 2013 shows promise to showcase both new material from their recently released album ‘Psychedelic Pill’ and the classic hits that helped make Neil Young a household name. Without a doubt the hype surrounding the tour dates so far illustrates just how Neil Young continues to pull massive crowds five decades into his impressive career. The Hollywood Reporter wrote of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s October Hollywood Bowl concert: “The made-for-each other singer and band seamlessly meld old and new amid a relentless, outstanding torrent of beautiful noise”. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted: “This tour serves as a reminder of how [Neil] became the Godfather of Grunge, and going on 67, he will still out-grunge anyone who gets in his path”. The LA Times’ glowing review painted vivid pictures that will have Aussie fans counting
down to March 2013, including that of Neil Young, “hunched over his Gibson electric guitar – known affectionately as “Old Black” – strangling notes out of its neck while standing in front of a Fender amp as big as the Ritz”. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime show
when Neil Young with Crazy Horse play at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Sunday, March 10 at 7.30pm. Tickets start at $108.20. To book for the show or for more information call 136 100 or visit www. ticketmaster.com.au.

KYLIE/FASHION BY KYLIE MINOGUE and WILLIAM BAKER
F
rom Australia’s darling in the 1980’s to the global pop star and style icon she is today, Kylie Minogue charts 25 years of fashion in her new book Kylie – Fashion. Written with her long-time creative director William Baker, Minogue showcases the fashion that has defined her career for a quarter of a century. Kylie – Fashion features a foreword by famed French designer Jean Paul Gaultier and other written pieces littered throughout the tome by the likes of Stella McCartney, Dolce and Gabbana, Balenciago, Karl Lagerfield, Christian Louboutin and ManoloBlahnik. From those iconic ‘Spinning Around’ golden hotpants and the revealing white jumpsuit of ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ to rare photos never seen before, Kylie – Fashion is an archive of the singer’s most famous styles and images. Minogue said the book charts her
relationship with some of the most talented people in fashion. “It makes me very proud to see gathered together all the great designers and houses I’ve worked with over the years,” she said. The 224 page coffee table book features 400 colour and black and white photographs, and is ordered album by album, from ‘Kylie’ in 1988 to this year’s ‘The Abbey Road Sessions’. Fans should be delighted by this new glossy book. FYI has 10 posters of Kylie: Fashion to give away. STEEPED IN AN INCREDIBLE DARK HISTORY

rather than Sydney. Edwin Musick set to planning the route in meticulous detail. On their first survey flight Captain Musick and his crew had no problem with Honolulu, and at Kingman reef – a mere pin-point on the map but large enough for drums of fuel to be stored there – a special radio ship had been anchored off-shore to relay directions to the Pan Am flying boat. The mountains surrounding Pago Pago harbour, however, proved more challenging, rising between 490m and 650m, and causing Musick to comment later that landing there “had been like landing in a darned teacup”. Captain Musick made another survey flight, and it was decided that just one more should be undertaken in January 1938 before beginning commercial operations. It was a catastrophic decision: American authorities had just discovered that should S-42 flying boats need to dump fuel in emergencies, some of that fuel could be swept back into cavities in the wings, making them akin to flying bombs. A ban was put fuel dumping by passenger-carrying S-42s…

but because Captain Musick’s survey flights carried no passengers, no one thought to tell him of the ban. On January 11 1938 just after taking off from Pago Pago, Captain Musick’s S-42 developed an oil leak, so he decided to return to Pago Pago. A US Navy ship later that day found the charred remains of the Pan American Clipper floating in a vast slick of oil. It would be 10 years before Pan American would finally fly commercially to Auckland.

hen Pan American Airways decided in 1937 that the time was right to open up a commercial flying route from San Francisco across the South Pacific to Sydney in far-off Australia, it’s founder Juan Trippe knew he had just the man to pioneer the route for them. That was his Chief Pilot, Captain Edwin Musick who had already done such a job to Hong Kong two years earlier. But the South Pacific decision was to prove a fatal one Captain Musick. In those days with no airstrips on which to land on islands in the Pacific for refuelling and rest-breaks, Juan Trippe planned to use S-42 Sikorsky flying boats. But even in 1937 Britain eyed the South Pacific’s sunny islands for its own Imperial Airways – and so banned Pan American from using Fiji (then a British colony) as a vital re-fuelling point. Undeterred, Juan Trippe decided to test-out a route that would involve stops in Honolulu, a remote atoll called Kingman Reef 1,700km south of Hawaii, Pago Pago in American Samoa, and ultimately Auckland

he fireworks over Penrith’s skyline last Wednesday night were nothing to do with a test run for New Year’s Eve, they were to celebrate the official launch of Hank’s Seafood Co. “Hank’s Seafood Co is fast becoming the hottest spot in town. During the two week soft opening period, many diners have been in to experience the menu and the atmosphere we have created in the restaurant, but Wednesday’s grand unveiling was our way of saying thank you to the diners and friends that have made this restaurant a reality, said Clayton Jude, owner and founder of Hank’s. SANTA MAKES ST MARYS HOME
Y
ou know Christmas is in the air when festive decorations line city streets and carols ring throughout department stores – all we need now is Santa Claus. Father Christmas himself will be arriving in St Marys to greet all the local children on Saturday, December 8. Steve Perry, Chairman of St Marys Town Centre Management said Christmas is an important time for communities to come together and celebrate. “Christmas is an important time of year for Queen Street, and our stakeholders have asked us to foster the Christmas spirit,” he said. Janine from Giggles Fancy Dress said St Marys is the best place to soak up the festivities and really celebrate what Christmas is all about. “St Marys is a place to slow down and breathe with its main street lined with trees,” she said.
“You can have coffee or lunch and take in the season. Christmas is a time for family and friends so, why not spend a little time in the Christmas spirit.” Other St Marys shop owners echo Janine’s thoughts on this time of year. Alex from Party Pit Stop said: “Christmas in St Marys is all about families walking along Queen Street and getting into the festive season”. Christine from Classic Conveyancing sums up everyone’s thoughts beautifully: “Christmas is, was and always will be family”. Get amongst the Christmas celebrations and bring the family down to Queen Street on Saturday, December 8 and celebrate Santa arriving in St Marys. This is a free family event and the best part is, you don’t have to pay for a picture with Santa! Families are more than welcome to bring their own cameras and happily snap away as the kids tell Santa all their Christmas wishes!
