KINGS OF COUNTRY ARE BACK IN TOWN NATHAN TAYLOR chats with Kings of Country’s Phillip Bauer about channeling one of country music’s biggest stars, Johnny Cash, and their upcoming show at Rooty Hill RSL…
T
hey toured here to great acclaim in 2011 and now the Kings of Country are back once again with a show that will delight audiences of all ages. Direct from sell-out concerts in the USA and around the world, the Kings of Country will perform an unforgettable tribute to the biggest names in country music. The concert stars three of the most incredible tribute performers going around – Marion Deaton as Willie Nelson, Marty Edwards as Kenny Rogers and Phillip Bauer as Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash impersonator, Phillip Bauer, has been performing as the late great ‘Man in Black’ since 1985. His uncanny natural resemblance and stage presence leaves his audiences spellbound as he recreates the music that made Cash a living legend. “I’ve been playing the role of Cash for 27 years but it’s been in the last five years that I’ve done it full-time and it’s really taken off,” Phillip said. The Oklahoma City resident said he never would’ve expected he would be performing as Cash for nearly three decades. “I did it originally as a small part in a show,” he said. “I always loved Johnny Cash but I never thought it would be still going on. I think the movie ‘Walk The Line’ really helped bring the music of Johnny Cash back to life, which in turn helped my career in a big way.” But Phillip said a viral clip that a fan posted of him performing as Johnny Cash on YouTube was what really lifted his career to new heights. “When I was a kid I used to watch Cash’s TV show and I loved it,” he said.

“I had a band that I used to play with and as part of the show I impersonated various voices. I did Neil Diamond and a few others but Johnny Cash was always a favourite. “One day somebody said ‘why don’t you pick one, it might take off?’ I said ‘nah that won’t work!’ So I was doing a show in my hometown of Oklahoma City and someone filmed it and put it up on YouTube. Not long after people started calling the venue where I played saying ‘who is this guy?’ So I then started sending out an email with the video to producers and boom!” Johnny Cash was born in 1932 and throughout his 71 years of life became one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he’s most loved and remembered for his work on the country music scene, Cash’s songs crossed other genres including rockabilly, rock and roll, blues, folk and gospel. This crossover appeal led to Cash being inducted into the country, rock and roll and gospel music halls of fame. Cash’s most famous songs, many of which are still performed by modern day artists today, include ‘I Walk The Line’, ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, ‘Ring Of Fire’, ‘Get Rhythm’ and ‘Man In Black’. When Cash died in 2003 from complications from his diabetes it shook the music world. “When Cash died it was a very sad occasion, it was a great loss for America and the world,” Phillip said. Until this day Phillip hasn’t stopped keeping the memory of Cash alive, touring all over the world and sharing his music legacy

When Cash died... it was a great loss for America and the world with new generations of fans. When the Kings of Country bring their show to Rooty Hill next week they’ll be performing all the hits that made their artists music icons. “We each do our individual sets on the night before we get together for a big finale at the end,” Phillip said. “The crowd just loves hearing ‘Ring Of Fire’, ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and ‘A Boy Named Sue’.” And what about the on-stage rivalry between the three Kings, who gets the most cheers? “Oh we debate it but we like to keep that between us,” Phillip laughs. rocodile Rocking into Kingswood Sports Club this Saturday is Australia’s best Elton John tribute, the Elton Jack Show. The world-renowned show covers all of Elton’s greatest hits, taking you on a whirlwind journey through ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Candle in the Wind’, ‘I’m Still Standing’, ‘Daniel’, ‘Saturday Night’s Alright’, and plenty more. Lance Strauss, front-man and founder of the Elton Jack Show, first gained national acclaim in 1987 after making an appearance as an Elton John impersonator on the ‘Red Faces’ segment of popular variety show ‘Hey, Hey, It’s Saturday’. He soon went on to form the Elton Jack Show as we know it today, and is now supported by a six-piece backing band. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to the British showman, Elton Jack has played over 2,000 shows since the late 1980’s in more than 15 different countries. The Elton Jack Show has even been considered as one of the greatest tribute shows in the world. With stage musical experience, Strauss (who has performed in ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Lennon’) entertains as Elton Jack, bringing all the charisma and showmanship one
would expect of the man himself. The Elton Jack Show is just as relevant and dynamic today as it was two decades ago when it was first formed, maintaining its quality and following just like the man who inspired it. Don’t miss the Elton Jack Tribute Show at Kingswood Sports Club tomorrow, Saturday, October 27 at 8.30pm. Entry is free. For more information call 4737 4600 or visit www.kingswoodsports.com.au.

en Affleck steps behind the camera again for his third directorial outing in the new political thriller ‘Argo’. Based on true events, ‘Argo’ chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis – the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, militants stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans managed to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA ‘exfiltration’ specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies. Fans of Affleck’s last film, ‘The Town’ are sure to be pleased with his latest offering, as ‘Argo’ mixes tension and humour to create a taut, suspenseful film following this bizarre true story.
I
n the vein of self-reflective horror films like the popular ‘Scream’ franchise, new thriller ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is out to both scare and entertain. Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen. If you think you know this story, think again. From fan favorites Joss Whedon (director of ‘The Avengers’) and Drew Goddard (‘Cloverfield’ writer) comes ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out. ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is high on both laughs and scares, meeting and subverting viewer expectations, and fans of horror films will be laughing themselves silly with this inventive and unique flick. Critics seem to be sharing a universal state of giddiness about ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, with many claiming it is just the boost the horror industry needed. Starring Aussie favourite Chris Hemsworth and Jesse Williams of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ may not be for everyone, but it is a surefire hit for horror junkies.

sequel to ‘Medal of Honor’ (2010), this version is an enthralling firstperson shooter game that will have you enlisting for the army once you have played it! Players will continue to face global terrorist threats, rescue hostages in Southeast Asia and assault Al-Shabaab’s pirate town on the Somali Coast and other real, international locations. The main mission of the game is to track down underground dealers who are selling Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate, an explosive, into the United States of America. The game play features six new fighting methods including: Assault Rifle, Sniper, Demolition, Point Man, Heavy Gunner and Spec Ops. Key to the modus operandi is the concept of unlockable targets, which can be anything from guns and masks or grenades and fire fighting helicopters. So, if you feel like working for a covert operation that hunts down bad guys with the help of some new mean weapons whilst travelling the globe, go out and get ‘Medal of Honor: Warfighter’.

fter five long years, the wait for Delta Goodrem’s fourth studio album is now over, with her new CD ‘Child of the Universe’ released today. The album features the singles ‘Sitting on Top of the World’, ‘Dancing With A Broken Heart’ and new hit ‘Wish You Were Here’. Delta began working on the album as far back as 2009, with a strong vision for the musical direction from the outset. Delta’s signature positive attitude and mantra of ‘love and light’ are balanced with some darker lyrics and themes on the new album, with the songstress reflecting on a darker period of her life (namely her split with ex-fiance Brian McFadden). The chart-topper collaborated with several songwriters for the 15-track album, including Nick Jonas, with whom she penned the track ‘Safe to Believe’. Now the album is complete, ‘The Voice’ coach has claimed it is full of potential singles. The first single released from the album, ‘Sitting on Top of the World’,
peaked at number two on the ARIA charts and also reached number 23 across the ocean in New Zealand. With her first album since 2007, Delta Goodrem offers more music that is sure to win over Australian hearts.

THE DAYS OF ENJOYING A GOOD PORT ARE FAR FROM OVER
T
by David Ellis
he Symington family in Portugal’s Douro Valley have been making Port for more that 350 years, with 12 Symingtons currently working in the family business. Six of the Symingtons are the 13th generation of the family, and one was named Decanter Magazine’s Man of the Year 2012, the first time anyone from Portugal has ever received such recognition. With 920ha under grapes for Port making, the family is the biggest landowner in the Douro Valley, and when it recently acquired major competitor Cockburn’s it pushed combined sales of all the family’s Port companies to over one-third of all premium Ports world-wide. Dan Murphy’s boasts it has virtually a Port from the Symington stable for every taste and every budget, with some five Cockburn’s ranging from just $19.99 for a Fine Tawny, to $59.99 for the top-of-the-range Cockburn’s
Quinta dos Canais Vintage Port. They also have three Blandy’s Ports that are also sourced from Symington’s – a Madeira Five Year Old Malmsey and Aged Five Years Bual Madeira ($29.99 each) and a Blandy’s Madeira 10 Year Old Malmsey at $49.99. Many of us seem to have forgotten the enjoyment of a good port, but with spring and summer coming up, it can be a most delightful drop served lightly chilled with everything from fruity desserts to cakes, chocolate puddings and cheeses. One for lunch: Victoria’s BlackJack Vineyards in the Harcourt Valley just south of Bendigo got more rain between January and March 2010 than they’d seen for the same period in around a decade, yet actually seemed to refresh the vines. Amongst the results is a 2010 BlackJack Block 6 Shiraz that’s come up as a really good red to drink young, teamed with flavoursome lamb shanks done in a slow cooker for $40.

TREVI RISTORANTE
hen you step inside Trevi Ristorante Bar & Lounge you wouldn’t know you are in the heart of Penrith. Instead, Trevi’s elegantly modern décor with touches of old Italia makes you feel like you’re in a high-end restaurant beside Rome’s famous Spanish Steps. The atmosphere is tranquil and sophisticated, and the soothing background music makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. The soft bubble of conversation in the room was ideal though, leaving me feel calm rather than stressed trying to fight for ‘air time’ when chatting with my dining partner. My dining partner and I visited the restaurant during the lunch session, which was far less busy and more intimate than Trevi’s popular evening period. We both decided to skip the entrée menu and turn our attention to their extensive mains menu. Most dishes had us both whetting our lips with excitement but we couldn’t resist Trevi’s delicious list of Pastas. I chose to have the Penne Sorrento – a popular dish that had been on the menu for seven years. It consisted of sautéed prawns, bacon, onion and snow peas in a garlic, chilli tomato sauce topped with fresh penne pasta. My partner opted for the recent menu addition, the Aioli Linguine Con Gamberi. Her
dish contained prawns sautéed in garlic and olive oil finished with semi-dried tomatoes, roasted capsicums and olives with fresh parsley and chilli. Both dishes came out in a timely manner, were full of colour and portions were of a decent size. The prawns in both dishes were soft and easy to eat, and the light olive oil in the Aioli Linguine Con Gamberi brought out all the flavours and freshness of the pasta. Once we polished off our delicious pasta mains, it was time for dessert. Mind you despite being very full, it wasn’t a struggle to get excited for the next course. All the desserts looked palatable but I couldn’t go past the Charlotte di Fragole which was layers of fresh strawberries, cream and vanilla pastry surrounded by sponge finger soaked in a vanilla and strawberry liqueur served with a strawberry coulee. This dessert was truly unbelievable, it melted in my mouth. My partner, who’s a glutton for chocolate, selected the Chocolate Pavlova Roulade, which in her words was “delectable”. Trevi Ristorante Bar & Lounge is located at 20-22 Woodriff Street, Penrith. They are open for lunch Tuesday to Friday from 12 – 3pm and dinner Monday to Sunday from 6pm to late. FUN FOR THE FAMILY ALL WEEKEND
I
t’s that time of year again when the amazing Doll, Bear and Craft Fair comes to town. Kicking off this Saturday, October 27 and continuing Sunday, October 28, the 24th Annual Doll, Bear and Craft Fair will take place at the Museum of Fire in Penrith and this year will feature over 120 interesting stalls. Among the huge range of stalls you’ll find dolls, accessories, porcelain dolls, living pottery, lace draping, wood turning, wooden toys and furniture, sewing items and kitted toys. Then of course, it would not be a Doll, Bear and Craft Fair without all manner of toy bears and accessories. On the day you will find stalls selling teddy bears, teddy bear making supplies, scrapbooking supplies, egg artistry, ceramics, crystal ornaments, aromatherapy, jewellery, folkart, collector’s toys, cars, Christmas decorations, cottage craft and so much more! All the 120 stalls will be under cover in the main building of the museum and it’s the
only time of the year that 15 major exhibits are removed from display. The Junior Firefighters training area remains open for kids, along with the theatre and a number of other display areas. As always the popular playground and picnic area will remain open for the whole family to enjoy – the kids might even enjoy a ‘teddy bear’ picnic with their newly purchased, furry friends – and there will also be coffee, tea and barbecue facilities on hand to keep you full and refreshed throughout the weekend. Throughout Sunday raffles will also be sold and drawn in the afternoon for people to pick up a great range of prizes. All in all the Annual Doll, Bear and Craft Fair is set to keep the whole family entertained! Before you make your way to the Doll, Bear and Craft Fair, FYI has collated a number of fascinating doll and teddy bear facts to get you into the spirit of the fair. • Traditional dolls have been made from materials like clay and wood and were
used in magic and religious rituals throughout the world. • The earliest, documented dolls go back to the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Greece and Rome. • The world’s most expensive doll called ‘The Bird Trainer’ stands at 1.2 metres and is worth $6.25 million. • The name Teddy Bear comes from former US President Theodore Roosevelt after
he refused to shoot a bear in a hunting competition that was tied up because it was unsportsman-like. The Penrith Doll, Bear and Craft Fair is on this weekend, October 27 and 28 at the Museum of Fire from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Entry is very affordable at just $5 for adults, $4 for concessions and $2 for kids. For more information call 4731 3000 or visit www. museumoffire.com.au.

he self-styled ‘Reverend’ Charles Bowers and ‘Colonel’ Jefferson Smith were after the gleaming metal of the Klondike Gold Rush when they arrived in frontier Skagway, Alaska, in 1897. But they had no intention of clambering torturous mountain trails to get to it. Rather they planned on making their fortunes doing what they did best – conning the gullible with notorious pea and thimble rorts, card tricks and other scams. Jeff Smith had earlier fled Denver where he’d run a gang of con artists and earned the nickname ‘Soapy’ and where he controlled corrupt police, politicians and other officials. He came unstuck when he shot two rival gang members and his protectors lost patience with his heavy drinking and bad temper, and told him to clear out before he was charged. Meanwhile Charles Bowers had already arrived in Skagway and sent Smith word of the easy pickings to be made from the golddrunk Klondike miners; by the time Smith arrived the ‘Reverend’ Bowers had already assembled a team of reliable conmen. Smith took little time to stamp his mark on Skagway with the trick that earned him his nickname: during first-day drinks at Clancy’s Bar, he produced a small tripod on which he opened an old leather suitcase, whose open lid blocked patrons from seeing its contents. “Friends,” he announced to Clancy’s customers. “My name is Colonel Jefferson Randolph Smith, and I have the pleasure of introducing you to my special brand of soap.” At this stage he unwrapped a bar of soap and slipped a $100 bill under the wrapper, which he carefully resealed, then $50 into other bars, and smaller notes into more. He nonchalantly tossed each bar back
into the suitcase. “Friends, choose a bar of my soap for $5, and you could gain $100!” Clancy’s patrons rushed forward. The first man to select a bar of the soap, unwrapped it and jubilantly thrust aloft a $100 bill; several others unwrapped $50 bills, others found five- and two-dollar notes in their $5 soap bars. Or nothing at all. Ultimately the only big “winners” had been Bowers and Smith’s gang members, who knew exactly the bars with the notes in them. Within weeks Smith opened his own bar – Jeff Smith’s Parlor that is today a forlorn and ghostly Skagway landmark – and with the help of gang members duped hundreds of miners out of their gold earnings with the age-old thimble-and-pea trick. Like his soap scam, it was always his well-placed gang members who knew where the pea was, and the miners who didn’t. And while the heavy rye-drinking Smith soon had plenty of Skagway law enforcers and civic leaders in his hip-pocket to protect his scams, he also gave generously to charities, built the town’s first church, and started ‘Adopt-a-Dog’ to save animals dumped on frigid winter streets by departing miners’ families. But when a miner was mugged and robbed of his gold behind Jeff Smith’s Parlor, respectable citizens of Skagway declared it was time Soapy Smith, the ‘Reverend’ Bowers and their bunch were thrown out of town. Smith was gunned down by businessman ‘Big Frank’ Reid in 1898. CELEBRATE OUR PROUD HERITAGE
W
e all love our beautifully unique country, so why not celebrate what it means to be Australian by hearing our nation’s favourite poets come alive in song. Come along and celebrate all that Australia has to offer with Gavin Lockley and friends on Wednesday, October 31 in a one off concert affectionately titled ‘My Country Australia’. ‘My Country Australia’ is the third in a series of musical adaptations of the great Australian poets and follows on from the success in 2009 of Lockley’s ‘Ballads of the Bush’ and ‘Symphony of Australia’ which had its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House in 2007. Lockley has selected poems he has loved since his childhood and put them to music, reflecting his belief that the great Australian poets and balladeers should be lifted off the page and performed to as wide an audience as possible in order to preserve our cultural history.
As Lockley said: “In the tradition of Mahler’s ‘Des Knaben Wunderhorn’ and Berlioz’s ‘Les Nuits D’ete’ these orchestral songs express the colour and excitement of the great stories that shaped the Australian folk consciousness”. ‘My Country Australia’ includes ‘Clancy of the Overflow’, ‘The Convict’s Ballad’ – a set of verses inspired by the story of Richard Morgan, ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle’, ‘The Man From Ironbark’, Banjo Paterson’s ‘A Singer of the Bush’, Cuthbertson’s ‘The Australian Sunrise’ and Jon English and orchestra performing ‘Waltzing Matilda’. The concert will feature a 60 piece orchestra and a choir of an astounding 200 voices. ‘My Country Australia’ is being held to celebrate the 85th birthday of The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. Catch ‘My Country Australia’ live at the Sydney Opera House this Wednesday, October 31 at 8pm. Tickets start at $79.
To book or for more information call 9250 7777 or visit www.sydneyoperahouse.com to book online. FYI has two double passes to see ‘My Country Australia’ live on October 31 to give away. For your chance to win email the code word ‘AUSTRALIA’ to Nathan.

THE JOHN LENNON LETTERS EDITED BY HUNTER DAVIES
D
espite it being over 30 years since his assassination, legendary Beatle John Lennon can still create controversy. The new book, The John Lennon Letters, is a collection of Lennon’s self-penned letters, postcards, notes and doodles. The 250 pieces featured in The John Lennon Letters were collected from around the world, sourced from collectors, dealers and auctioneers and the recipients themselves. Edited by The Beatles’ only official biographer, Hunter Davies – and featuring a foreword by Yoko Ono – The John Lennon Letters reprints Lennon’s letters in his own hand, complete with cartoons and his signature sign-off, “John and Yoko”. Lennon writes scathing letters to Paul and Linda McCartney (“I was reading your letter and wondering what middle aged cranky Beatle fan wrote it”), producer George
Martin (“for the cameraman to take credit from the director is a bit too much”) and even royalty – the Queen herself is not safe from the great Beatle’s biting commentary. Nothing is off-limits in The John Lennon Letters, and even humble shopping and todo lists warrant inclusion in the book. Filled with examples of his humorous outlook on life, the collection is presented chronologically, creating an evidential narrative of Lennon’s life and career. Aside from his hard-hitting rants and putdowns (not the least of which is a brief note where Lennon fires his chauffeur), fans also get to see a softer side of Lennon, with love poems written for his wife and charming postcards to bandmate Ringo Starr. This is a must-have for all Beatles, Lennon and Ono fans, giving a fresh perspective on an already well-documented star. The John Lennon Letters is available now in hardcover format.

P
lenty of interesting stories coming out of the world of television this week, let’s get straight to it…
First up, huge congratulations to Channel Seven reporter Sally Obermeder for getting the all clear from breast cancer earlier in the week. Sally tweeted: “So excited to report some good news – I’ve been given the all clear!” The bubbly beauty has been battling the disease since October last year, when she was diagnosed the day before giving birth to her first child. We can’t wait to have you back on our screens Sally! On the other end of the stick another Channel Nine veteran has revealed he too is
Here’s one from the ‘What The Files’ – 2011 ‘X Factor’ runner-up Johnny Ruffo has joined the cast of ‘Home and Away’, in what can only be described as a cheap move to boost ratings amongst the teenage girl audience. I’m not quite sure what acting experience Ruffo has, if any at all, but I guess if the music career isn’t quite happening, best to try something else. His 16-episode run on the soapy will most likely air in the New Year. News coming out of America is that once-popular medical drama ‘Private Practice’ has been axed by its US network. The series will end with the 13th episode in season six. Channel Seven is yet to air any episodes of the sixth and final season, but stay tuned. Channel Seven has unveiled their long
list of new shows set to air in 2013. One of the greatest reality shows ever, ‘The Mole’ is returning under the new title ‘The Mole – Culture Clash’. Other new shows include a reality show from the makers of ‘My Kitchen Rules’ called ‘House Rules’ and a game show where stars learn to dive called ‘Celebrity Splash’. What’s even more interesting are the shows that haven’t been named to return as yet including ‘The Amazing Race Australia’,
‘Deal or No Deal’, ‘Beauty and the Geek’ and ‘RSPCA Animal Rescue’. Let the conspiracy theories begin. Lastly, I praised Rove a few weeks back for the quality of his FOX8 show ‘Rove LA’, turns out I spoke too soon. Over the last few weeks I’ve seen nothing but B – D list celebrities as guests. Come on Rove, the show’s based in LA for crying out loud, pick up your game!

Channel Nine has sacked popular ‘Getaway’ presenter Catriona Rowntree after 20 years with the network. Her departure follows last week’s announcement by fellow ‘Getaway’ presenter Jules Lund that he was leaving the network. It’s understood ‘Getaway’, which screens on Saturday afternoon, is in big trouble and is likely the next to get ‘boned’ by Nine.

WE’RE OFF AND RACING
M
elbourne Cup day is just around the corner and the racing season is well and truly underway. Yes, with spring comes a re-engerised interest in racing with the best horses and most importantly, the best fashion on the track. These photos from Caufield Cup day in Melbourne last week show that it’s time to head to the shops, buy your racing outfit and head out to the track to celebrate the season. And if you’re not a fan of racing at all and don’t like a flutter, never fear, half of the time it’s not about the racing anyway! Whilst Melbourne is the focus at this time of year, there’s always plenty of fantastic race days in Sydney during this time, whether they be at Randwick or Rose Hill. And of course, even if you’re not on the track for Melbourne Cup day, you can still dress up and have some fun at one of the many functions happening around the Penrith area this year.

n August Timomatic told FYI he couldn’t wait to get out to Penrith and perform. “I would love to take my show to places that don’t get this kind of thing and give them a really quality show with amazing dancers and amazing lighting, that’s definitely on the cards,” he said. And as if a genie came out of a bottle and said “Timomatic your wish is granted” – the man himself will now be entertaining audiences at Penrith Panthers on November 3. It’s been a remarkable 12 months for the singing and dancing sensation, who shot to fame as a grand finalist on the 2011 season of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’. His ride in the spotlight so far has been very short but very fruitful. Timomatic has achieved feats people haven’t in a 10-year career. He’s released hit after hit, toured the world, and supported some of the music industry’s biggest acts including Janet Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Pitbull and Flo Rida.
