Nathan Taylor caught up with rising Celebrity Apprentice star Didier Cohen about his time on the show, being part of dance act TEN-DMC and preparing for a huge 2012…
THE REALITY OF DIDIER COHEN
D
idier Cohen wants Australia to know he’s not just your regular tattooed 26-year-old with the cool model looks, and he’s right! There’s plenty more to this guy than just a walking coat hanger. Thanks to a recent stint on Australia’s first series of ‘Celebrity Apprentice’, the country got a real insight into the mind of a once troubled teen who left the seedy world of Los Angeles to turn it all around for a career and lifestyle change in Sydney. “I moved to Sydney about two years ago because LA wasn’t a good environment for me,” Didier said. “I signed a modelling contract with Aussie clothing label Industrie, which required me to move and live over here. My life in Australia is much better than the one I was living in LA.” Following a two year run as the face of Industrie, American-born Didier got the surprising call to be a contestant on the charity driven Channel Nine series ‘Celebrity Apprentice Australia’. “Let’s be honest, I was really unknown to the public, I thought it was a joke when I got the call to come on the show,” Didier said. “I thought to myself… I’m not Australian, I’m not a celebrity and they want me on ‘Celebrity Apprentice Australia’? I thought I should’ve been on regular ‘Apprentice’.” Didier was grateful for his time on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ because not only did it kick start his career in Australia but allowed the country to get to know the ‘real’ Didier. “Celebrity Apprentice was just a huge platform and I think it was a great outlet for people to get to know who I really am and that I wasn’t just this tattooed guy on a bus advertisement,”

he said. “I was purely just being myself on the show, I wasn’t going to backstab anyone or anything like that. If I got fired I got fired, I just wanted to be myself and it turned out to be a really awesome experience.” After being in the country for just a few years, Didier had only ever met fellow contestant Wendell Sailor previously. He was virtually unaware of the rest of his fellow celebrity contestants, which included Pauline Hanson, Warwick Capper and eventual winner, Julia Morris. Didier was branded on the show as the ‘International Model’, which he himself didn’t exactly agree with. “I’m not an international model, I only ever modelled for three years,” he said. “Industrie was the only big thing I’d done besides some stuff in the States, but the only place I’ve ever been a model is in Australia. “I don’t even model anymore and haven’t for the last 18 months, I never wanted to be a model in my life. Modelling was a means to an end but I am grateful it brought me to Australia.” Didier was fired from the contest halfway through the series but later returned for the finale week to help former Miss Universe Australia and ‘love interest’ Jesinta Campbell in her final challenge. Didier said being on the top-rating ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ was great because it allowed him to promote his charity, Youth Off The Streets, but it’ll be the first and last reality show he’ll ever be a contestant on. “I’ll never be a contestant on a reality show again in my life. I have ideas later to create shows but will never do an

elimination type reality show,” he said. “However, the show did allow me to promote and raise money for my charity, which helps rehabilitate and counsel homeless and disadvantaged youths. I was one of those kids and I wanted to represent those kids. I wish I had Youth Off The Streets when I was doing it hard in LA.” With the show now over for the year, Didier is gearing up to be one of this country’s most talked about celebrities in 2012. And first off he’s set to make waves on the club music scene as he unleashes another one of his talents as an MC and DJ of dance music act TEN-DMC. TEN-DMC is a partnership between Didier and his good mate, international DJ, Tenzin. “About two years ago Tenzin needed an American’s voice sample on one of his tracks. I said I’d help him out but then he asked if I could rap, I said I could and this year we decided to partner up. He’s the DJ and producer and I’m the MC,” he said. The pair last week released their debut single ‘Buckle Up’ on iTunes, as well as to the radio airwaves. They also performed in front of a huge crowd at the recent Stereosonic dance festival at
ANZ Stadium. Didier said so far people love the combination of him and DJ Tenzin. “Our gig is cool, we play all the new house tracks and I write raps over those tracks, it’s live remixes and the crowd loves it,” he said. “We both know a lot about music. I used to work in the music industry when I was 18 and know music production, and Tenzin knows it all as well. “I wrote all the lyrics to ‘Buckle Up’ and Tenzin did all the production. Dance record label One Love really loved the track and signed us to their label. We have another single ‘Rip The World’ due out soon and maybe one day an album.” Along with his work with TEN-DMC and releasing his own 1930s to 1950s rebel-style clothing line called Dukes in 2012, Didier is also looking forward to getting back on the small screen in the New Year.

MOTOWN MAGIC
Re-live the music from a memorable era at Rooty Hill RSL
M
otown originally began as a record label in Detroit more than 50 years ago and played an important role in the racial integration of popular music. Throughout the 1960s, Motown and its soulbased subsidiaries were the most successful proponents of what came to be known as ‘The Motown Sound’, a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence. Next Saturday, December 17, you’re invited to Rooty Hill RSL to take a journey through the legendary Motown era with acclaimed show ‘Reach Out’ starring award-winning group Spectrum. This authentic tribute, direct from the USA, takes the audience through the history of Motown and pays homage to some of the biggest names including the Temptations, the Four Tops, the Miracles and Marvin Gaye. Spectrum are highly engaging guys who draw upon the talent of their four radiant voices and diverse personalities to form a first class vocal quartet. After spending six stellar years recreating the sound and style of the Four Tops in Las Vegas’ multi-million dollar production shows ‘American Superstars’ and ‘Legends In Concert’, the group has developed the versatility to credibly cover the music of groups from the Platters to the Temptations to Boyz II Men. It is this versatility that has propelled them to
the status of headlining their own shows in which they perform stirring renditions of all the best cover tunes. Spectrum’s credits included European tours, a Doo-Wop to Soul Review at the Hollywood Palladium, as well as performances with over 40 symphony orchestras throughout North America. Their award-winning show ran for four years straight on the Las Vegas Strip and in that time was voted Best of Las Vegas in 2005 and 2006. In 2009 they were selected to receive the Vegas Entertainment Consumer’s Living Legends Award for Excellence in Entertainment. Spectrum boasts four incredible singers, each with the voice of a solo artist. They combine their voices and dexterity to create the angelic harmonies and deft choreography that have become trademarks of the group. The members of Spectrum consist of master recording artist Darryl Grant of Oakland, California, Chicago-born musician and versatile entertainer Pierre Jovan, David Presscott the silky-smooth, soaring-voiced first tenor from Rochester, New York and lastly, singer, actor and group founder Cushney Roberts from New Jersey, who left the life of a Princeton-educated corporate engineer to cut his teeth in the casino lounges en route to becoming a well-respected Las Vegas showroom entertainer. Spectrum has a wealth of experience to entertain any crowd, anywhere in the world! ‘Reach Out – A Journey Through Motown’ starring Spectrum entertains crowds at the Rooty Hill RSL next Saturday, December 17 at 8pm. Tickets are $26 for members and $31 for visitors. To book or for more information call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

We look at the flicks we all love to sit down to at Christmas time
I
n the weeks leading up to Christmas there’s always some very important things to attend to. We’re all either trying to work out what we’re going to wear at upcoming work Christmas function, dodging loads of people on the way to buying those important gifts or waiting in supermarket queues purchasing all that food to eat on the big day. But we almost never get the time to just stay at home, take out the stressful part of the festive season, and just sit back and enjoy a good wholesome family Christmas movie. With the help of our readers, FYI has come up with a list of the best Christmas movies we all love to watch at this time of year. ‘Home Alone’ (1990) An 8-year-old boy,
Kevin, is accidentally left behind while his family flies to France for Christmas. Kevin must defend his home against idiotic burglars. Stars Macaulay Culkin and Joe Pesci. ‘Home Alone 2: Lost In New York’ (1992): One year after Kevin was left home alone and had to defeat a pair of bumbling burglars, he accidentally finds himself in New York City, and the same criminals are not far behind. Stars Macaulay Culkin and Daniel Stern. ‘The Santa Clause’ (1994): When a man inadvertently kills Santa on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place. Stars Tim Allen. ‘Bad Santa’ (2003): A miserable conman and his partner pose as Santa and his Little Helper to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. But they run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled kid, and the security boss discovers the plot. Stars Billy Bob Thornton and Bernie Mac. ‘Miracle On 34th Street’ (1994): When a nice old man who claims to be Santa Claus is institutionalized as insane, a young lawyer decides to defend him by arguing in court that he is the real thing. Stars Richard Attenborough. ‘Christmas Vacation’ (1989): The Griswold family’s plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster when some invited and uninvited relatives come to town. Stars Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid. ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ (1946): An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated
businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed. Stars James Stewart and Donna Reed. We had plenty of votes come through
and must give special mention to these other Christmas favourites – ‘Die Hard’, ‘A Christmas Story’, ‘Polar Express’, ‘Elf’ ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas’, ‘Love Actually’ and ‘The Muppets Christmas Carol’.

New step forward for ‘The Mondo Project’ as exhibition launches
P
enrith Performing and Visual Arts are proud to present their latest photographic portrait exhibition called ‘Thursdays’ at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Thursday, December 15. This exhibition is part of ‘The Mondo Project’, a youth cultural development and audience engagement program formulated in response to the groups of young people that gather on the grass area between the Penrith Civic Centre, Westfield Penrith and The Joan. Commonly known as the ‘mondo’, this area has become associated with violence and socially unacceptable activity, particularly on a Thursday evening. In an attempt to address the ‘mondo’, ‘The Mondo Project’ has been engaging with adolescents – once a month on a Thursday – via experimental music playlists and a free photo booth allowing participants to take home their machine-shot portraits.

SECOND THOUGHTS
It is a collaboration between Penrith Performing and Visual Arts, Westfield Penrith and Penrith City Council. Next Thursday, December 15, the Joan’s windows will be transformed with a visual display of 15 photographic portraits by renowned music photographer, Wilk. These images captured during a Thursday evening heavy music and hard-core techno music session, portray the faces, fragility and atmosphere of the place and more importantly the young people present. The underlying premise of the ‘Thursdays’ project is to showcase the ‘Mondo kids’ to the broader community who regularly access the area. Instead of automatically branding youth in public space as a nuisance to be disposed of, consideration might be given to accommodating young people who want to contribute to the life and energy of Penrith. Rather than solely policing the problem, this program engages, entertains and activates young people in positive cultural activity. The portraits on exhibition will imply ownership of the space and therefore encourage a respect of the space. While experimental in its approach, it has offered a platform for the Westfield security staff and Youth Off The Streets to be involved directly with the youth. So make sure you make an effort and get down to the ‘Thursdays’ exhibition launch on Thursday, December 15 at 5pm. The launch coincides with the final ‘Mondo’ youth event of the year and the Westfield and Youth Off The Streets Youth Christmas Party. The evening will include sporting activities, arts and crafts, music and dance workshops and a BBQ dinner. The ‘Thursdays’ art exhibition is free for all to see outside the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from December 15 until January 27, 2012.

MAGIC OF PIPPIN Classic musical tale has a local flavour thanks to Castlereagh actor
C
astlereagh local, David Attrill, is one of the bright new stars of the Broadway hit ‘Pippin’, currently playing at Sydney’s Sidetrack Theatre. The dynamic young independent theatre company, CrinkleCut Productions, presents this dark comedy musical parable until December 17. We’re here to tell you a remarkable tale. Don’t believe your eyes. Don’t trust your ears. The players are liars. These things did not happen. But it’s all true. Pippin is the son of King Charlemagne. He has a kingdom at his feet but he is lost and unhappy. Pippin needs to find something fulfilling amongst the hedonism and war of his father’s empire or his life won’t have meaning.
While searching he encounters miraculous acts of illusion, drag, burlesque and acrobatics. But Pippin is desperate to find his own extraordinary act. From the award-winning composer of ‘Wicked’, ‘Pippin’ is a spectacular parable with a heart of darkness. Legendary director Bob Fosse originally directed ‘Pippin’ for the Broadway stage in the 1970s. The production starred a young Jill Clayburgh and played to packed houses for almost 2,000 performances. In 1973, ‘Pippin’ was nominated for a massive 11 Tony Awards. ‘Pippin’ won five Tony’s that year for Best Actor in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Choreography. In 2003, movie company Miramax acquired the feature film rights to ‘Pippin’, following the success of the musical ‘Chicago’, but so far no movie has been made. Crinkle Cut’s production of ‘Pippin’ is directed by Benita de Wit, with musical direction by Andy Peterson, who leads a six piece live band. It stars Benjamin Hoetjes as the Leading Player, Mitchell Lagos as Pippin, Sydney drag legend Gaynor Tension as Berthe, Castlereagh local David Attrill as Charlemagne, Aimee Timmins as Catherine, Erin Bruce as Fastrada, Phil McIntosh as Lewis, Zach Smith as Theo plus featured dancers Kat Hoyos and Sam Larielle. ‘Pippin’ is currently entertaining audiences at the Sidetrack Theatre, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville until Saturday, December 17. Tickets are $34 for adults and $28 for concessions. To book or for more information call 9550 3666 or visit www.sidetrack.com.au.

Nathan Taylor chats with award-winning country artist Markus Meier about his new album ‘Modern Days’…
M
arkus Meier is a multiple awardwinning country artist who recently released his third album ‘Modern Days’. The album shows why Markus is described as the new breed of country artist to watch out for. The two-time Golden Guitar nominee’s first single ‘A Perfect Night’ rocketed to number one on the country music charts with plenty more big hits still to come!
the most? There’s a couple on this album, this record is quite personal. Songs like ‘Only Human’ is pretty close to me, as well as a track called ‘A Perfect Night’ and ‘Small Town Joe’.
You released your third album ‘Modern Days’ a few months ago, how would you sum up the songs on the album? I think this album in particular is more general in subject matter. There’s stories about love on there, stories about some of the things that make us human and just general topics where it doesn’t matter if you’re urban-based or you live in the desert.
After listening to the album the one thing I noticed was it didn’t sound like a typical country record, did you do that on purpose? This album has more of a rock edge and I’ve copped a fair bit of flack from more the traditional country music lovers. I am a 100 per cent country boy born and bred in the desert but my music sounds a bit different. I can’t apologise for it because that’s the way it comes out. I grew up on Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Slim Dusty but when I write music it kind of has to be relevant to my generation.
Is there a certain song on the album that means something to you
How have your fans reacted to the album so far?
I think they like it because it’s really fresh and a very different sound for country music. People have been commenting a lot on Facebook and they tell me what they really think, which is a cool thing. One of the honest things about country people is if you stuff something up they’ll let you know about it (laughs). You’ve done a lot of touring of late with a few high profile country stars including Lee Kernaghan, what have you learnt from Lee along the way? It’s been a real experience for me. Lee picked me up about two years ago and I started playing in his band and opening the shows for him. He’s been a big supporter of mine and I’ll be doing some more touring with him next year. Lee draws big crowds and it’s good for someone at my level to get in front of a big crowd like that that’s there to have a good time and party. I treat it like an apprenticeship because it’s my job to get out there and warm the crowd up.
