NATHAN TAYLOR goes one-on-one with the world’s only Tina Turner endorsed tribute performer, Rebecca O’Connor…

T

he reason Rebecca O’Connor sounds, looks and acts like Tina Turner so amazingly well is because she’s been studying her every move for the past 30 years.

“I was obsessed with her from the age of seven, I just thought she was an amazing woman,” Rebecca said.

“The hair, the legs, the lipstick, the wildness, she was just so powerful, her energy was amazing. I always thought while watching her videos – ‘I want to be like that!’”

Tina Turner in her prime was one of the world’s most popular entertainers. Her career has spanned more than 50 years and she was once billed by Rolling Stone magazine as the “Queen of Rock and Roll”.

Rebecca’s career took off playing the part of the ‘Nutbush City Limits’ singer after winning a European talent competition in front of 33 million viewers more than a decade ago.

“I was doing karaoke shows for years until one day I entered a competition called ‘European Stars In Their Eyes’, which was a show similar to ‘X Factor’, instead you would actually perform mimicking a famous artist,” Rebecca said.

“I ended up winning that whole show, I won Europe, and that’s when Tina Turner first saw me... she was amazed by that.”

Rebecca’s win was the start of the Irishborn performer’s career and her performance on the show ended up catching the eye of one of music’s most well-known managers.

“I went travelling around the world and ended up meeting Dennis Dunstan in Australia, he was the manager of Fleetwood Mac for 23 years,” Rebecca said.

“He was like ‘Oh my God, I would never

take on a tribute act normally’, but he just thought I was different.”

One thing that’s unique about Rebecca O’Connor’s amazing live shows is that she is the only Tina Turner impersonator in the world that is fully-endorsed by the legendary singer herself.

Turner once said: “Rebecca is so good, she’s scary... if I had her energy, I would still be touring today”.

Rebecca admits while it’s a true blessing to have Turner’s approval, it also gives her that added element of pressure of having to keep her standard as high as possible when she performs.

“I think just to keep up to her level, because she’s endorsing every show that I do, is the tough part,” she said.

“I have to do my best every time I’m out on stage because I’m portraying her as such.”

The legendary Tina Turner was born in Nutbush, Tennessee almost 73 years ago in 1939. She started out her music career in the early 1960’s with her then husband, Ike Turner.

Turner is responsible for some of the biggest rock classics of our time including ‘Proud Mary’, ‘River Deep – Mountain High’, ‘Let’s Stay Together’, ‘Private Dancer’, ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’, ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’ and ‘The Best’.

But one song most Australians can never get enough of is the ultimate party track ‘Nutbush City Limits’. Whilst performing the song in Australia, Rebecca noticed something unusual that Australians do and the rest of the world does not.

“When I sing the ‘Nutbush’ the whole place just erupts and everyone does this ‘dance’... but no one else in the world does it,”

In this special concert at The Joan, the Fellows will present a program entitled ‘Emerging Composers’ plus premiere a new, chosen work from a national competition for young composers.

The performers will also play selected works from the early collections of established composers Britten, Mendelssohn and Schoenberg.

The Sydney Symphony Fellowship program provides an opportunity for young, talented and professional players to be part of the Sydney Symphony for one year.

The participants are mentored by top musicians from the Sydney Symphony, with Fellows regularly employed in the orchestra, performing with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Charles Dutoit, Hugh Wolff, Simone Young, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Steven Sloane, Oleg Caetani, Kristjan Jarvi, and David Robertson.

In the epic action-adventure ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). Sam Claflin joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.

This film is a visual masterpiece, with alternating dark and light images that both elicit fear and awestruck wonder. Stewart is not nearly as annoying as she was in the ‘Twilight’ films, Aussie Hemsworth is formidable as the Huntsman, but the most remarkable and powerful performance comes from Theron as the wicked queen, Ravenna. Theron is completely psychotic and frightening, and her make-up and costuming is amazing.

Penrith celebrated Melbourne Cup day on Tuesday with a range of functions across the local area, with some of the biggest being at Panthers, Penrith RSL and the Penrith Paceway.

Our photographer, Melinda Jane, captured plenty of the fun and excitement of the big day, as Penrith stopped work to party!

There was plenty of fantastic dresses, brilliant suits... and the odd winning ticket, too!

With entertainment galore at some of Penrith’s biggest venues, locals were kept enthralled by not just the race, but the bits and pieces around it too!

ajor news broke late last week that Channel Seven had axed long-running variety show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ from its 2013 schedule. Less the 24 hours later, rivals Nine snapped it up and added it to its new line-up for next year. The axe didn’t come as much of a surprise with ratings from this season way down on previous years and featuring a judging panel that was looking tired and boring. The only way the franchise could’ve survived in the short-term was new host/judges or a change of networks, and it went with both. Nine recently revived ‘Big Brother’, and has done so reasonably well, so expect ‘AGT’ to have a completely fresh, updated and more entertaining vibe next year. [Pictured] If you were worried you missed some of your favourite American shows last week, don’t be too alarmed because they didn’t actually air. Super-Storm Sandy not only devastated millions across east coast America but it also stopped many top shows from airing in the US, largely due to the non-stop coverage many American networks gave to the storm. Therefore shows usually fast-tracked from the US into Australia, such as ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘2 Broke Girls’, weren’t seen. Programming did return to normal though this week.

Good news for fans of reality show ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ because it’s finally been renewed by Foxtel for another season. The show didn’t air this year after former host Sarah Murdoch quit the program following the 2011 season to pursue interests at Channel Ten. Whispers are that current ‘Project Runway Australia’ host Megan Gale will get the honours of hosting the revived modeling contest. I’m not the biggest fan of Gale’s hosting abilities, she’s quite bland and pedestrian. If the show wants to make a big splash in 2013 it needs to go above and beyond and not use existing Foxtel talent.

Michael Palin is one of the world’s best travel presenters and now he’s off to South America for his next exhilarating adventure.

‘Michael Palin’s Brazil’ is a four-part series which will air on ABC1 from this Sunday, November 11. From the lost world of Amazonia to the buzzing modern metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, Palin explores this vast and disparate nation in his inimitable way. It’s a timely look at this rising global power, host nation for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics. It all begins at 7.30pm.

Those funny boys, Hamish and Andy, are back for another installment of their popular ‘Caravan of Courage’ series. This time the boys will be hosting two 90-minute specials – one from Australia and one from New Zealand. The crazy pair will rev up the old caravan and courageously drive the length of New Zealand and the breadth of Australia to compare and contrast the people and places that make our region so unique. And then, in a very unscientific manner, they will pick a winner. ‘Hamish and Andy’s Caravan of Courage: Aus vs NZ’ airs Sundays, November 11 and 18 at 6.30pm on Nine.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley delivered some great news last week – she was free from cancer. KAK went through six and a half weeks of radiation for breast cancer, first diagnosed back in June during her time on ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Now all is well and good we look forward to having KAK back on our screens very soon.
