OUTDOOR RELAXATION CREATING THE PERFECT GARDEN NOOK

The cosy outdoor nook in the garden is making a comeback as we look to escape our hectic lifestyles and turn to nature for soothing, reflection and rest. A secluded garden nook can provide a refreshing space to help you relax, rest and recharge and with a bit of imagination and some practical ideas for your space you will soon be reaping the benefits of your own outdoor garden nook. Fence me in The outside areas that we entertain and relax in are where we want to feel safe and secluded. Friday, March 13, 2020

Fencing helps to: • break up spaces • define functions of outdoor areas • provide an overall sense of depth to a garden zone • control privacy – protection from neighbours, pets or small children. With a bit of imagination, outdoor seclusion zones can easily be created with a combination of both low and high-level barriers. A mix of natural materials, textures and colours can work simultaneously together to help define the function of your nook.

Whether it be a: • pruned hedge defining a seating area • bushy ‘climber’ arbour along a secret pathway • line of feature roses against an existing fence • simple strip of flowers leading the eye to a water feature Raise the roof With outdoor entertaining zones, the space overhead is important in defining the activity of the zone, creating an atmosphere and most importantly, providing shelter from the

elements. A pergola is a functional solution for the outdoor shelter, providing year- round protection and aesthetic beauty. The reclaimed kids’ cubby house offers a unique solution for seating shelters or garden houses. Your very own cosy outdoor nook will provide a true connection with your outdoor areas, allowing a space to comfortably relax and reflect. Give Luke a call today to book your FREE initial consultation to chat about your cosy nook design ideas. Home & Garden Magazine

LET’S TALK ABOUT RUGS

YOUR GUIDE TO COMPLETING A ROOM

Most people struggle with choosing a rug and often leave it as the last purchase to complete a room or space. Here are some tips on choosing the right rug. Size does matter! When choosing a rug for a space, make sure you don’t purchase one too small for the area. If it’s the living room, measure out where you want the rug to be. You can place the front legs of furniture on the rug, even go as far as halfway Friday, March 13, 2020

under the furniture. This will also help the rug from moving. Where should you use a rug? A rug is always a welcomed addition to hard floors, especially tiles. It will be warmer in winter and feels nice under the feet! What about rugs on carpet? We say yes! A rug defines a space and ties the furniture together to feel more cohesive. We love to put a rug under the dining table too when on hard floors.

Patterns and textures Some rugs are like artworks themselves. Choosing rugs with patterns and different textures is great, just make sure they are not competing with other patterns in the room such as furniture fabrics or artworks. Patterns and texture add interest to the room and rugs can be the hero in a space. Choosing colours The colour you choose can depend on many things. If it is

the last thing you buy for the room, look at what other colours, patterns and textures are in the room and make sure whatever you pick is not going to compete with these. If it is a dark room keep the rug light in colour. For a more intimate and formal area, you can go with darker colours. The cost of rugs can vary but often the more you spend, the better the quality and the longer it will last. Home & Garden Magazine

IN THE GARDEN

PLANNING IS KEY SUCCESSFUL BULB DISPLAYS

MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU

Planning and preparation is the key to a successful bulb display. Choose an open site that receives minimum six hours of direct sunlight; ensure the soil is well- draining and enriched with well- rotted manure, and plan combinations according to flower height, colour and flowering time. The sowing depth will depend on the variety you are planting. As a general rule, the bulb should be sown at approximately 2- 3 times its diameter but if in doubt, check the packaging. Spacing is dependent on size of bulb as well as plant growth habit; however most bulbs don’t mind being crowded which helps with achieving a mass plant affect. Ensure that you plant your bulbs the correct way up – this is usually

with the ‘pointy end’ facing upwards. However the exceptions include Anemones and Ranunculus where the ‘claws’ or points are sown facing downwards.

Water the bulbs well after planting, but then do not water again until the first sign of growth has appeared. If your soil was wellprepared prior to sowing then fertilising isn’t necessary until after flowering is finished.

It is very important that you do NOT cut back the foliage of your bulbs after flowering. The spent flower may be cut off, but cutting back the leaves would mean the bulb will not have enough food reserves to flower the next season. Water and feed your finished bulbs until the leaves begin to die off naturally (approximately 2- 3 months), with either an allpurpose plant food or blood and bone. Except for cool climate bulbs like Tulips, Daffodils and Hyacinths, it is not necessary to lift bulbs each season. As a guide, most can be left in the ground for three to five years. Lift the bulbs carefully to ensure they are not damaged, and discard any rotted or damaged ones.
