THE NEED FOR SHADE
THE FINISHING TOUCH ON YOUR GARDEN
Some form of garden shade is essential to make outdoor living more pleasant, especially as we now use our outdoor spaces as extensions to our home’s living areas. We want these spaces available and utilised all year round but don’t always have the space or budget for more permanent structures. These simple, low cost shade solutions will keep out the heat over the warmer months and can easily be removed if not required in cooler months making them perfect for rentals. Awnings Awnings and canopies are becoming increasingly popular in gardens to shade balconies or terraces where pergolas and more solid structures are not an option. Awnings are versatile, lightweight, have flexible sizes and shapes and they suit most garden styles. Shade sails Shade sails are affordable, they create an architectural statement and are available in a range of shapes and colours to match a
theme or give your space a fresh look. A simple sail cloth over an existing pergola can be put up in warmer months to shade outdoor living areas. Gazebos Portable gazebos are simple to put up to create shade anywhere in your garden. They are available in a range of materials and designs, they come in different sizes with some offering screening, side panels and even windows. Umbrellas
Umbrellas are the ultimate temporary shade structure and are perfect for shading smaller terraces and eating areas. There are many variations on the traditional garden umbrella, including large, tilting patio umbrellas or those fixed to posts. Umbrellas are very flexible, quick to erect and low cost. They suit virtually any style of garden with a wide range of colours. The team at Fresh Perspective Landscapes are able to assist with shade solutions for all your outdoor areas. IN THE GARDEN
TALKING CABBAGE COMPLETING YOUR GARDEN
MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU
For lots of gardeners a vegetable plot isn’t complete without the ever- dependable cabbage! Shredded, stir-fried, steamed or baked, there’s not much you can’t do with cabbage. There’s a fantastic range of cabbage varieties to choose from, offering different shapes, colours and textures. Cabbage heads can be rounded or conical, with leaves that are light green, dark green, red or purple; smooth and glossy or deeply crinkled in appearance. For best results cabbages need an open, sunny site and rich soil. A bed improved with compost or well-rotted manure is ideal for these hungry feeders, who will appreciate a further boost from an organic general-purpose fertiliser raked in at planting time.
Unless your soil is naturally alkaline, sprinkle some garden lime onto the soil too. Many cabbage varieties are incredibly hardy and will tolerate below - freezing temperatures. In fact, cabbages require cool weather to form solid heads, so sowing time is important. If spring arrives before the heads have formed the plant can bolt and run to seed. So start your seedlings in February – March indoors or under cover, transplanting to final cropping position when two to four leaves have developed and the summer heat has subsided. Sow in seed trays or punnets, 5mm deep. Transplant to final position allowing 40 - 60cm between
plants. Firm your cabbages into the ground well, then water generously to settle the soil around the roots. Cabbages are prone to attack from cabbage white butterfly caterpillars. To stop butterflies from laying their eggs on the leaves it’s best to use netting during the warm months. Another clever technique is to grow nasturtiums close by as a sacrificial crop, also known as a trap crop. Caterpillars tend to prefer nasturtiums, so they’ll be more likely to eat these instead of your cabbages. Popular cabbage varieties include: Golden Acre, Red Ruby Ball F1, Savoy F1 and Sugarloaf.

COLOUR IS CRITICAL! HOW TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES
Psychologists have long had a firm belief that colour can change a person’s mood and even influence physiological reactions. Many interior designers like to use these principles when choosing colours for interior spaces. Our own interpretation of colour and how it may affect our mood is subjective and can be influenced by things such as a past memory or cultural beliefs. Here we explore a few popular colour options to use in your home. We are not advising you to run out and buy litres of blue, green or pink paint and paint all your walls! You can introduce colours more subtly with decoraFriday, February 14, 2020

Cool Blues are commonly used in areas of the home where family and friends gather. These colours represent feelings of balance, physical and mental relaxation, productivity, socialisation, communication and security. There are many shades of blue and using the more turquoise blues can add excitement to the space. Don’t be afraid to use different shades of a colour, light blues remind us of the sky and the ocean whilst darker blues can
Fresh Greens can be used in the home office or areas for downtime. These colours represent nature, freshness, restfulness, growth, wealth, optimism and calmness. The colour green has been proven to reduce anxiety and feeling nervous. Greens can help create a sanctuary away from the stresses of our busy lives. Easiest and most affordable way is to add greenery – plants! Other ways could be a feature wall in a neutral green (like Dulux Olive Leaf) or a
Soft Pinks are not just for the girls’ bedroom! Blush and muted pinks have become very popular over the past few years in other parts of the home. Pink represents femininity, softness, calmness, creativity, purity, openness, wholeness and tenderness. Soft pinks can create a gentle, loving, “everything is rosy” mood. These colours are still on trend and can be used by introducing a vase, cushions, artwork with a touch of pink or even in the bathroom! Home & Garden Magazine
