Outdoor Style That Protects Inspired by natural repellent solutions for protection against mosquitoes, Waxworks products are completely free from harsh chemicals and safe for use around family and friends. Simultaneously stylish and functional, the Waxworks Citronella Tribal Drum Candle ($13.98) is sophisticated, on trend, and brings a sense of adventure and strength into your home with its tribal print. The candle contains citronella essential oil, creating a natural barrier that protects you from the interruption of mosquitoes. With up to 24 hours of burn time and a wind resistant wick, there’s no reason to cut a summer evening short. For an industrial inspired design

style, the Waxworks Citronella Floral Concrete Pot Candle ($11.98) is just what you need. With a burn time of up to 16 hours and wind resistant wick, this candle is certain to add style and functionality to your outdoor setting this season. Protection That Follows The Bite Shield Wristband Pack of six ($19.99) is a 100 per cent natural personal insect repellent, ideal for use amongst active adults on the go and children alike. Worn around the wrist or ankle, the band repels mosquitoes and flying biting insects for up to 48 hours. Simple and safe to use, the Bite Shield wristbands are nontoxic, DEET free and waterproof. Guaranteed to stay effective throughout all outdoor activi-

ties, including camping, fishing, picnics, sports and barbecues. Zap Away Intruders (pictured) The Gecko 25W Lantern Insect Zapper ($44.90) keeps outdoor entertaining pest- free. Its functional design allows the lantern to be hung up or placed on flat surfaces, offering additional ambience when entertaining, and its 23- metre radius of light and heat attracts and zaps mosquitoes and other pests. With a selfcleaning vertical grid and catcher tray, the only mess you will need to worry about is the left overs of a great night outdoors with your nearest and dearest. IN THE GARDEN

LIMITED SPACE?

GARDENING IS STILL AN OPTION Space restrictions are no longer an excuse for not gardening, as even the smallest patio or windowsill can boast a crop of miniature vegetables or flowers in containers. Here is a quick guide for creating your own container garden.

MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU

Container Remember that cheap plastic pots will deteriorate in sunlight and may need replacing after 1-2 seasons. Terracotta pots require more regular watering than sealed or ceramic pots. Glazed ceramic pots are excellent – just ensure adequate drainage. Small pots restrict root growth and dry out quicker than large ones. Lightcoloured containers lessen heat absorption and encourage even

root growth. Elevate containers with bricks or pot feet to allow free drainage. Sunlight Your container garden will need at least five hours of direct sunlight each day. Leafy vegetables can tolerate the most shade, while fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers need the most sun. Growing mix Always use good quality potting mix that combines good drainage and water retention capacity. Commercial potting mixes are often slightly acidic, so you may benefit by adding a little lime to your soil when getting started. Remember to leave 5cm space

above the soil for a layer of mulch to help with water retention. Watering & fertilising Some plants will need to be watered daily, especially during hot, dry weather. Use controlled release fertiliser to reduce leaching of nutrients, and supplement with liquid fertilisers to maximise crops. Choose plant food that contains a complete, balanced solution including trace elements. Selecting suitable plants Certain varieties are more suitable for growing in containers. Dwarf flowers, herbs, mini tomatoes, leafy salad mixes and strawberries are examples of edible plants that really thrive in pots.

SIMON’S HOUSE

DO IT RIGHT!

DON’T LOOK FOR A QUICK-FIX

SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU

I have been very vocal about avoiding the quick- fix solutions when it comes to any problems caused by waterproofing failure. While there are many reasons a waterproof membrane may fail – poor installation, building movement, inadequate dry times or it can even naturally break down over time – properly applied membranes should last several years. A good effective membrane needs to not only provide a waterproof barrier but must also be flexible to handle any reasonable movement. Now back to the quick-fix issue. I know that the thought of a quicker, cheaper option can be very tempting but especially when it comes to waterproofing issues,

PLEASE RESIST! One “quick- fix” in particular is the process of putting a sealant on top of the tiles to prevent water penetration. This is only a temporary fix... putting a Bandaid on it. The only way to fix the problem permanently and to provide a long

term solution is to remove the tiles and reapply the membrane. One other thing is that the sealants applied topically often offer an attractive warranty but if you look closely, warranty is void if cracking appears due to movement (settling, extreme weather conditions etc... happens all the time!) I strongly feel that waterproofing should be done by a licensed applicator. It’s a specialised area that requires experience and skill. Why risk it? Structural damage to your home is a real threat if problems arising from failed waterproof membrane are not addressed effectively AND immediately! Do it once – do it right!
