INTERIOR STYLE
TRENDS ARE CHANGING
WHAT’S INFLUENCING DESIGN? This will filter onto their need for calm and security in their homes which has in turn influenced a design era that gravitates to a more relaxed, organic and authentic aesthetic. The following are a few key elements we are seeing in furnishings and homewares.
JO PULETUA INTERIOR STYLE & DESIGN CONSULTANT AT HARII.COM.AU @HARII.BOHEME
Believe it or not, the environment, politics and technology have a huge influence on design trends. Beyond pretty patterns and colours, a great deal of empathy that considers how these factors affect people’s lifestyles is so important and is what makes products relevant and relatable. In their 2019 report, key trend consultancy Trend Union predicted that these current fearful and chaotic times will heighten society’s need for security.
Plants Greenery is in the process of taking over all areas in homes, workplaces and restaurants. They essentially bring what’s familiar outdoors, indoors. Apart from helping to neutralise the air in your home, tending to plants helps encourage mindfulness and calm. Instead of scattering individual plants in your space, cluster a group of plants of all different sizes, shapes and pots on the floor, on shelves or on mirrored surfaces further magnifying their abundance. Curves and femininity The search for calm via our senses has brought out society’s need for curved edges and organic shapes. Circular mirrors, natural materials such as wood, jute or rattan and chunky curved edged couches are becoming increasingly important to home makers. The idea of a house that heals and brings comfort is becoming increasingly more important so areas such as the kitchen and bathroom are receiving more love and care in terms of focus and attention to detail when decorating. Textiles As society learns more about textiles for the home, their features and benefits and how they are produced, their tactility and how sustainable the process of producing them is, is becoming more and more important to

home makers. There has been more of a shift and demand for ethically produced products and big brands such as Ikea are doing
a phenomenal job in ensuring everyday home makers are able to purchase products that contribute to communities and the environment. Home & Garden Magazine

IN THE GARDEN
PUMPKIN SEASON PREPARE FOR A SUMMER HARVEST
MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU
With Halloween pumpkins fresh in our minds it’s a perfect time to get growing some for late summer harvest! Pumpkins are closely related to squash and zucchini – often confusingly so, and are grown in the same way. They need a sunny position, a moisture-retentive soil and somewhere out of cold winds. Here’s our tips to get the most out of your crop. Most pumpkins have a sprawling habit so they need space to grow. If you have a small garden, choose varieties such as Small Sugar and Golden Nugget which have a smaller footprint. Make 30cm square planting pockets 60cm apart for bush varieties or 1.2m for trailing varieties. Fill the pockets
with a mixture of compost or wellrotted manure and soil; leave a low mound at the top of the planting medium. Sprinkle a general fertiliser over the soil. Covering the soil around the mounds with black polythene will help growth and keep the fruit off the soil, suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
Sow a couple of seeds in each mound, thinning later to the
strongest seedling per position. Keep the soil constantly moist by watering around the plants, not over them. Pinch out the tips of the main shoots of trailing varieties when they are 60cm long. Once the first fruits start to swell, feed the plants fortnightly with a high potash liquid fertiliser. The fruit of marrows and pumpkins should be supported on a piece of tile or glass. Harvest squashes when the fruit is still quite small. Harvest pumpkins when the vines die off, leaving as much stem as possible; this will extend the storage time. Popular pumpkin varieties include: Butternut, Golden Nugget, Jap, Jarrahdale and Queensland Blue.

SIMON’S HOUSE
EXPERTS ONLY! WHEN DIY IS A NO-GO
SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU
For most home improvement projects around the home I am all for getting in and giving it a go, however, there are a few specialised areas that are best left to skilled and experienced professionals. In my opinion rendering is one of those areas. Quite often DIYers underestimate the difficulty of the job and the consequences if done incorrectly. It can be a very costly mistake to fix. Now having said that, rendering is a fantastic option if you are looking to refresh an older home and increase its value. It also improves on the waterproofing and fire rating. I am a huge fan of acrylic renders. They have become more popular

as they have superior water resistance, strength and require less time to dry and cure. Because they are flexible, cracking is less likely to occur. Acrylic renders can also be applied over painted masonry surfaces as long as the paint is sound – be sure to check with the manufacturer. It does cost a bit more but I believe it’s well worth it. A few points to check before beginning any rendering job either DIY or with a professional. The substrate needs to be clean of any loose material and no crumbling mortar in the joints. Any mould should be treated. Very, very important is to be absolutely certain that the area is free of any dampness issues.
Make sure the render mix is suitable for the surface, that the correct number of coatings is applied and that enough time is given for the render to cure. One last thing. Before even considering rendering, it is important to acknowledge the period of a house as to preserve its characteristics and value.
