BEST SHADE SOLUTIONS
THERE’S SO MANY OPTIONS FOR YOUR HOME
Creating garden shade in your outdoor space is at the top of our thoughts as we are in the midst of the summer heat. Whether a motorised louvre roofed pergola, a rustic timber arbour or simple translucent sheeting, creating a covered space in your garden that gives you extra room to relax with family or entertain guests makes sense on many levels. We’ve come to expect our outdoor shade structures not only to provide shade but also to serve as stylish features in the landscape. Here are a few shade structure solutions: Friday, February 21, 2020
Pergolas and Arbours Arbours are freestanding structures that usually frame a walkway or the entrance to a garden. Pergolas can also be freestanding or extensions to your house and are usually bigger and used to cover outdoor seating areas. Timber Pergolas/Arbours These work well as structural elements in the garden and the flexibility of timber gives you a wide range of design options and can be painted to complement the garden and house. The strength of timber allows chairs or swings to be hung.
Aluminium/Colorbond Louvres Electronically controlled, handoperable or fixed louvre structures not only look great, but also allow you to control sun, shade, light, ventilation and rain at the touch of a button. Automatic systems are easy to use and versatile. They have an attractive contemporary appearance, and are lightweight, so heavy supports aren’t necessary. Translucent Sheeting (Polycarbonate) Lightweight, affordable fixed polycarbonate roofing allows UV filtered sunlight to pass through
and provides cooler temperatures under the cover of your pergola. Climbing Plants Pergolas and arbours draped with flowering, fruiting or scented climbers are among the most traditional shade structures in gardens that soften the manmade materials of a vertical structure. The team at Fresh Perspective Landscapes are able to assist with shade solutions for all your outdoor areas. Contact them today to find out how you can get started. Home & Garden Magazine

LET THERE BE LIGHT!
LIGHTING DESIGN IS CRUCIAL TO YOUR HOME When people are designing a new build or renovating a home, quite often, not a lot of thought goes into planning the lighting of the home, which is a shame because it can make such a difference to the overall look in the end result. Here are things to consider when planning lighting in the home... Type of lighting is important for many reasons including what you use the space for or the type of mood you want to create for that space. There are different colours and lumens (brightness) to consider. Our favourite type is the warm white because this gives the rooms a cosier, more homely feel. LED lighting is a must! They may be more expensive up front, but will last a lot longer and are more energy efficient. The only area I would suggest using a brighter cool white is in the bathroom. Nothing worse than bad lighting for doing the make- up, right ladies? Bright, cool whites in living areas can make it feel like a hospital waiting room!
Placement of lighting is also crucial to a good lighting plan. Ceiling height for hanging lights needs to be considered down to placement of furniture such as your dining table. If you want to hang a pendant or two above the table, first figure out exactly the size of the table and where you would position it in the room. Pendants are very popular in the kitchen also but be sure to hang them at a height that won’t make shadows over the food preparation or cooking area. A good way to stop shadows on the kitchen benchtops is to place a downlight directly above the area or better still, install lighting under the top cabinets. In the bathroom, you will get the best lighting if you place a sconse or pendant light on either side of the mirror, at eye level. For the living areas, there is no need to place rows and rows of downlights – that much light is just not necessary. Instead think about placing downlights closer to the walls where you might hang artworks. This will give the room a much better atmosphere and highlight
the art on your walls. Another important thing to consider is adding dimmer switches. This is a fabulous way to have instant mood lighting in a room and it feels just a little bit posh! If you are not in the market Friday, February 21, 2020
to change your lighting then at the very least we would suggest changing your bulbs to LEDs and using lamps in the living areas, hallways, dining and bedrooms. This is also a great way to give a warm, cosy and different feel to a room. Home & Garden Magazine

IN THE GARDEN
IT’S CARROT TIME! ENJOY THEM ALL YEAR ROUND
MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU
Carrots are amongst the most popular vegetables to be grown from seeds. They don’t need much space, are easy to grow and rich in beta carotene (converts to vitamin A) – but most of all because nothing tastes as good as home grown carrots fresh from the garden. By regular sowing you can have a continuous supply of fresh carrots all year round. Carrot varieties are described as Early or Main Crop varieties, but also short- root or long- root varieties. These names give you an idea of when they will crop and the type of soil they’re suitable for. Carrots grow best in light, sandy soil so if your soil is heavy clay, stony, or doesn’t drain well, concentrate on the main crop or short- root types. Early varieties
take around nine to 12 weeks to mature and Main Crop mature in 12–16 weeks. Main Crops take up more space, but they tend to be the best for storing.
Success with root vegetables is largely down to soil quality, so it’s worth taking the time to prepare your patch. Dig your soil over well until it has a fine crumbly texture, removing any stones as you go.
Do not add manure as this makes the soil too rich and can result in forked roots. However, you can rake in a light dressing of general fertiliser a week before sowing. Carrot seeds are small, but it’s wise to sow them as thinly as possible. This reduces the amount of thinning necessary and potential risk from pests. If you have difficulty sowing thinly, try SowEasy Seed Tapes where the seeds are pre- sown between layers of biodegradable paper – all you have to do is roll it out. Once the plants are showing their first true leaves, thin the seedlings to allow more space for each plant. Otherwise you don’t need to do much but water regularly – too little water can result in woody roots.

100’s
of new Pool, Spa & Renovation ideas next weekend Looking to improve your lifestyle and update your backyard by investing in a new pool or spa? The Pool Spa & Outdoor Living Expo at Rosehill Gardens from Saturday 29 February to Sunday 1 March is the place to go to get inspiration, the best advice and fantastic prices with exclusive show specials! The demand for pools, spas and alfresco areas is growing, with many Australians turning what was once an uninspiring and often neglected space - the backyard - into their own outdoor oasis. The backyard swimming pool, lap pool or spa is now considered a ‘must have’ addition to any new or renovated home as Australians increasingly spend time more entertaining and socialising in the privacy of their own backyard.
The backyard pool has become an essential part of the modern home and outdoor living experience in Australia.
The Pool, Spa & Outdoor Living Expo is organised by the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Australia (SPASA) and is the biggest consumer event for the pool, spa and outdoor living industry in NSW. The show is the perfect place for people to see, experience and compare a huge range of pools and spas and get expert advice on the latest equipment, systems and technology to create a fuss free and maintenance free pool. You will also be able to get advice on renovating or updating an existing pool.
Visitors to the expo can also seek independent expert advice from the SPASA stand and AILDM -The Australian Institute of Landscape Design managers will also have consultants on hand at the Landscape Design Feature area to provide ideas and inspiration for creating your dream backyard so bring your plans and photos. “The demand for pools, spas, water feature installations and associated lifestyle products continues to grow, and the concept of the backyard oasis has become an essential part of the modern home and outdoor living experience,” SPASA Australia Chief Operating Officer Spiros Dassakis said. “Homeowners can also explore all the health and lifestyle benefits associated with pool and spa ownership as well as learn how they can love their swimming pool or spa and the environment at the same time through SPASA’s Climate Care Certified program. The Expo will be held from 9am to 5pm at Rosehill Gardens on the Saturday 29 February and Sunday 1 March with free parking and admission for children under 16 so bring the family.

Pebble Masters The time has come to what we think is one of the most important decisions for any new pool build or renovation, the interior. The interior colour will dictate the overall water colour of your pool and set the scene for your backyard. Here at Pebble Masters, we specialise in pebblecrete pool interiors. With over bforty years experience with this product we have developed skills that are unmatched in the industry.b
For this abode in Kellyville, we partnered with Smith & Sons Castle Hill to deliver a pool interior that would blend in seamlessly with their backyard landscaping and entertainment area. Our clients selected the ‘Relaxation’ mosaic blend by Trend® and asked us to customise an interior that would complement both the colour palette of the mosaics and surroundings alike. After exploring and testing blends and water colours, we designed the ‘Terrigal’ interior; a water colour with an inviting, sky-blue hue, reminiscent of the Central Coast’s foreshore. The interior features an Arctic White Skypebble® Pebblesheen with a sprinkle of light blue, clear and green glass beads. All in all, we were able to exceed our customer’s expectations and deliver a pool interior that they could enjoy for many years to come.
