INTERIOR STYLE
WE CAN ALL DO BETTER
THINK ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
JO PULETUA INTERIOR STYLE & DESIGN CONSULTANT AT HARII.COM.AU @HARII.BOHEME
Society is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of environmentally responsible building and interior design. As a result, many of us are seeking to incorporate sustainable principles when decorating our homes. These easy interior styling principles can help reduce the negative environmental impact of our society and build a better, more sustainable future. Energy efficiency Energy consumption is one of the major contributors to climate change. Buildings are responsible for a big share of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, caused by energy consumption. We can do a lot to improve our home’s energy efficiency, mainly by reducing the amount of energy needed for heating, lighting, running appliances, etc., and by providing renewable, nonFriday, November 22, 2019
carbon-based energy to the building. Since most of the building’s heat escapes through windows, it’s important that the installed windows are of high quality and provide good insulation. Window coverings, blinds and shades enable residents to control the building’s temperature in an energy efficient way by opening and shutting them as needed. Carpets are also great insulators. It is estimated that a carpet retains as much as 10 per cent of a room’s heat. To save energy spent on lighting, a lot of energy can be saved
by selecting the right colours. Lighter colours reflect more light, while rooms with darker walls and furnishings need more artificial lighting. Using reflective surfaces increases the amount of light in a room by bouncing it around, decreasing dependency on artificial lighting. Use sustainable and ethical products The planet’s precious resources are limited, so discarding products as soon as they go out of style and replacing them with those that are currently trendy is
no longer justifiable. These days, makers and developers for big brands are doing quite the opposite by thinking of ways to make our products last longer. When selecting furnishing, consider preloved goods or brands that have undergone rigorous testing and hold sustainable and ethical licences. The world of design is becoming more and more increasingly aware of the need for sustainable thinking and is experiencing a growing interest in sustainable trends, such as recycling, upcycling and repurposing. THE GREAT OUTDOORS MAKE YOUR ENTERTAINING AREA SPARKLE As Australians, we are blessed with a climate that promotes entertaining outdoors and living life outside. While many homeowners desire a seamless transition from indoors to out, there are important factors to consider as indoor products such as tiles, furniture and décor items are not designed to withstand damaging wind, rain and constant UV exposure. For any outdoor project to be successful in standing the test of time, it’s important to select products for your project that are made specifically for use outside.
“ WE ARE BLESSED WITH A CLIMATE THAT PROMOTES ENTERTAINING OUTDOORS AND LIVING LIFE OUTSIDE”
Start from the foundations To make the most of your outdoor space throughout the year it’s important to consider the foundations you will be laying. Whether it’s creating appropriate drainage to avoid your backyard turning into a muddy mess after heavy rainfall, or laying step stones to reinvigorate an underused side path or on a bigger scale, paving an entertaining area for cosy dinner parties in the summer, the versatility of pavers will allow for many uses in the backyard. A great project to start an outdoor 4

room is the transition from inside to outside. Creating a continuous flow from the indoors through to the outdoor space will actually increase the use of the area! The best way to start is to choose an area near your back door to pave an entertaining patio and if possible, pave a large enough area to fit an outdoor setting and then decorate with lighting and heating. Protection and stability With unpredictable weather becoming more prominent in the Australian climate, window furnishings that effectively protect against the elements whilst remaining safe, easy to use and aesthetically pleasing are in high-demand. “Outdoor awnings remain hugely popular as they offer advanced sun protection and airflow for a more enjoyable entertaining space, while provid-
ing the added benefit of helping maintain your home’s internal temperature. But as our weather becomes more unpredictable, it’s important to consider outdoor awnings that can stand the test of Australia’s harsh climate,” said Vera Meharg, Marketing Communications Manager, Luxaflex Window Fashions. Windows to withstand the elements Enjoying any back garden starts upon first glimpse from inside the home. The best windows and doors can heighten this connection by subtly blurring the line between these spaces. Choose materials that will weather well Weatherboards are a staple of various popular home trends, including the Hamptons. Unfortunately, traditional timber options struggle in the harsh
Australian environment. James Hardie’s Linea weatherboards are a modern alternative made from Premium Fibre Cement, which gives the look of timber but is hard- wearing, low maintenance and resistant to damage from termites, rot, moisture and fire. “Popular modern design embraces open plan living that bridges the divide between the surrounds and the home, making for comfortable indoor- outdoor living,” said architect and James Hardie Ambassador, Joe Snell. “For modern builds, homeowners can go beyond the concept of a deck and verandas to build stunning outdoor rooms furnished and colour- coordinated with the rest of their house. HardieDeck is a smooth gap-free decking system which can be finished in a range of contemporary colours and is made from premium fibre cement instead of timber, so it won’t warp, rot or splinter.” Friday, November 22, 2019
