INTERIOR STYLE
HACKS FOR RENTERS
MAKE IT FEEL LIKE YOUR OWN with maximum impact without having to break the rental rules.
JO PULETUA INTERIOR STYLE & DESIGN CONSULTANT AT HARII.COM.AU @HARII.BOHEME That paisley wallpaper in the place you’re renting just isn’t cutting it for you. Whether you’ve been in the rental game for a while or you’re new to it, one of the major pain points renters face would have to be other people’s taste. I’ve curated a handful of decorating hacks to help give renters the freedom to change things up
Friday, October 25, 2019
Ugly cabinets A couple of quick and very simple ways to change up the look of ugly, dated cabinets is to simply change the handles or just get rid of the doors altogether. By simply unscrewing the doors, keeping the screws and storing them away to put back on later, you can re-vamp the look of nasty looking cabinetry. It’s a great way to show off and even colour co- ordinate your crockery with your kitchen accessories! Manky flooring If the thought of setting foot in a rental shower sends shivers down your spine or your back patio floor needs a fresh new look, there are great temporary flooring solutions out there for wet areas that won’t require any construction work. My favourite would have to be Ikea’s fabulous Runnen outdoor flooring range that comes in grey, dark grey, brown, stained brown and artificial grass. Its super simple click- in function makes it super easy to change the look of your flooring with the freedom of simply packing it up again when it’s time to move.
Woeful walls Whether they’re a horrible colour scheme, have peeling wallpaper, or are just dirty, the condition of the walls in a home really make or break a home’s aesthetic. A fantastic temporary solution to probably the most common problem for renters is the removable, re-usable wallpaper. Pickawall.com.au is an amazing service that allows you to either choose your own colour or artwork or select from their huge range of wallpapers. Their easy to apply, peel and reuse wallpaper is fantastic for renters who want to add a bit creativity to their home. Home & Garden Magazine

COSTA KEEPS IT REAL
GARDENING GURU COMING TO FESTIVAL Host of ABC TV’s ‘Gardening Australia’ and Logie Award winner Costa Georgiadis returns to Penrith in November to share his passion for plants and people at this year’s Real Festival. Costa will lead an interactive program of gardening activities on Saturday, November 2 from 2pm- 8pm which includes free workshops on recycling, edible gardens and eco organics for your backyard. This is Costa’s fourth appearance at Real Festival and he says he’s excited to be back and he’s looking forward to helping people make positive changes. “I can’t wait to be back at Real Festival in November. It’s all about family, friends and fun on
the banks of the stunning Nepean River. Bring your questions and bring space to store new ideas and innovative ways to change day to day habits for the better,” Costa said.
“I CAN’T WAIT TO BE BACK AT REAL FESTIVAL” Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said Real Festival is a sustainable event and Council’s award - winning waste service will be an important focus of Costa’s activities.

“Costa is a strong advocate for reducing waste and he believes small actions can lead to big changes. This is the same message we’re spreading to our community regarding sorting their waste,” Cr Fowler said.
“Gardening, composting and growing herbs and vegetables are some of the ways our community can live more sustainably, and we’re looking forward to working with Costa to promote this at Real Festival.”

SIMON’S HOUSE
NASTY PROBLEM
AN ISSUE YOU CAN’T IGNORE
SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU
Efflorescence is the formation of salt crystals on or near the surface of concrete. It’s not only terrible to look at but it can get worse over time. It may also be an indication of a more serious problem, like waterproofing issues. To get efflorescence, two things are required – water soluble salt and water. Water moving through the concrete pushes salt to the surface, then the water evaporates and leaves the white powder behind. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets. If you get onto it straight away, generally white vinegar will do the trick. If that doesn’t do it, head on down to the hardware store and pick up an efflorescence remover. If the leaching is extensive, it’s highly likely there’s a bigger issue
that needs to be addressed ASAP. Now, can it be prevented? According to the HIA, most experts will say no. It can, however, be minimised and serious damage avoided. Preventing water from getting in is the number one priority. Physi-
cal measures and good design are the most effective means of avoiding efflorescence or leaching. Adequate waterproof membrane, a suitable sealer, good drainage and ensuring a high quality of workmanship are also imperative.
