GET OUTSIDE AND PLAY PLENTY OF FUN TO BE HAD AT HOME
Open spaces provide children with limitless potential for discovery and unstructured exploration. It confronts them with positive challenges and experiences, yet, imposes no formal agenda. Such a lot of focus is placed on our kids getting enough exercise and fresh air, that sometimes adults forget that outdoor play helps them just as much to reset, recharge and be at their best. Studies show that a life lived without play increases the risk of stress- related diseases, mental health issues, addiction and interpersonal violence. So, consider “play” as an investFriday, March 27, 2020
ment in personal and family wellbeing. There are many ways both kids and adults can connect and interact with their surrounding outdoor environments. These activities will prove why nature is the best kind of nurture for all. Sprinkler fun / water games Water and kids naturally go together. But why should us adults miss out on the fun? • Plants need watering – hello, waterplay as the kids chase the water spray! • Water the lawn and take turns to jump over the sprinkler,
once water restrictions allow this to take place of course! • Water painting – children can paint the side of a building with water and learn about evaporation. Again, let’s wait until water restrictions are removed. Outdoor fitness • Playground workouts for the whole family. • Jump on the trampoline for 10 minutes. Imaginative Play • Build an outside fort using old sheets, clothes pegs, a blanket and some rope. In their
own backyards children can perform constructive play by creating objects using their natural environment and employing their imagination to do so. • Bring out the plastic picnic ware for ‘tea time’. • Make a family treasure hunt – Create a simple outdoor treasure hunt and little ones will use their memory, cognitive skills and imaginations. • Build a backyard obstacle course. Obstacle courses are designed to improve gross motor skills and general co-ordination. Home & Garden Magazine

WORKING FROM HOME
HOW TO MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU! Boy, things can really change a lot in a week. Are you one of the lucky ones who still has a job and can work from home? When Caity and I aren’t installing furniture or meeting a client, we also work from home. There are things to consider and boundaries to put in place to make working from home successful. Here are some of those things to consider. If you can, set up a designated space away from the busiest areas in your home. A home office is obviously ideal. In this space you should only have work related items as a constant reminder it is your workspace. A window with a view to nature outside will do wonders for your frame of mind. We find that doing the essential work things such as emails, phone calls and dealing with anything urgent is best done first thing in your working day. If we start our day with other tasks that take you away from your workspace, you tend to continue to find other things that you could do or errands you can run and by the time you realise it, four to five hours have gone by and you still have to deal with everything else when you get back to your desk. Make sure your chair is ergonomic and supports you properly. If you are new to working from home you may not already have an appropriate chair. Trust me your back will thank you! Make sure you move around or take a short walk every couple of hours so you don’t end up stiff and sore! We have to be disciplined in separating our work time from our personal time. Don’t be tempted to fold the washing or throw another load on. These things can Friday, March 27, 2020
wait and distract you from the work you are doing. Also let your family and friends know that you are working from home so that they apply the same level of contact on the phone as if you were in a office and you are not constantly being interrupted! Some people will struggle with working from home for different reasons. One of the most common reasons will be isolation. If you do struggle with this try having a video chat with a work colleague at least once a day. Also you might find it helpful to continue to dress as if you were going into the office, this may help to motivate you and get you into that work headspace! Stay safe and healthy everyone.
