INTERIOR STYLE

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

COMPLETING YOUR NEW LOOK

JO PULETUA INTERIOR STYLE & DESIGN CONSULTANT AT HARII.COM.AU @HARII.BOHEME

Friday, November 29, 2019

So you’ve just finished re- arranging a space in your home to ‘freshen it up’ a bit, but there’s just something missing. Your walls are bare and that new hallway table needs a little something to complete the look. With the amount of options available in retail, choosing accessories and art for your home can be tiresome, even for the most seasoned stylist. To help homemakers like yourself along their way, I’ve put together a couple of key tips to consider when choosing art to help complete the look of your home. Get inspired You’ve already had a mooch around your favourite home-

wares jaunts, but nothing really jumps out at you. My advice is not to limit the art you select for your home to on-trend, massproduced canvas prints. Visit a couple of textile stores and have a browse through aisles of patterned, prints, knit or woven fabric that you can get cuttings off and frame. Grab a high- end fashion magazine or even a gardening magazine for editorial photos that make for a great cluster of one- of- a- kind framed prints for a bare wall. Looking outside conventional places will give your home that personal touch for a fraction of the price! Contrast art with your home

Look around your space. What is your colour palette? What style is it? Modern contemporary? Scandi? Bohemian? Whatever it is, select something that contrasts with it instead of complements it. Instead of being a matchy- matchy space filler, treat the piece you select for your home as something that can create an element of interest in your home. For example, a bold, vivid abstract piece for a nature inspired space, or a simple geometric, monochromatic piece for a more eclectic room full of colour or texture. Doing this will help break the monotony and add an element of surprise to your space.

IN THE GARDEN

SOIL IN TROUBLE

HOT WEATHER CAUSES HAVOC

MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU

The hot Australian climate and unreliable rainfall can cause havoc on our soil. Hydrophobic soil occurs when a waxy residue builds up on the soil particles, resulting in it repelling water rather than absorbing it. It is most common in sandy soils, dried out potting mix and soils containing unrotted organic matter. You can easily identify hydrophobic soil by simply watering it. If water runs off or pools on the surface leaving the soil underneath dry, you’ve got Hydrophobic soil. Luckily, it is not too hard to fix, here’s a few common ways you can make your soil water loving, or ‘hydrophilic’. Wetting agents A great quick fix although not

a long term solution. They work by breaking down waxy residues and breaking the surface tension in the water, making it easier to penetrate the soil. Commercial wetting agents are available at garden centres, or you can make one at home using agar (see our website for details). You can also use diluted dishwashing detergent as a soil wetter, but be sure to use environmentally friendly options and check their suitability for your plants. Soil improvement A long-term way to improve your soil is to add well- rotted organic matter, then mulching over the top. This will help prevent the soil from drying out, introduce microorganisms to your soil

which will break down the waxy residues and also improve your soil biology. Just be wary of continuously using pine bark or eucalypt woodchip mulches – varying the mulch type each application is best. Note that more is not always better – a 3-5cm layer is ideal. Potted plants Hydrate pot plant soil by soaking the pot in a tub of water for at least 10-20 minutes. Adding half - strength liquid fertiliser to the water will help replenish nutrients in the soil. When repotting, add fresh potting mix to boost moisture levels and provide fresh nutrients. Water crystals can also boost the soil water retention capacity.

SIMON’S HOUSE

GET THREE QUOTES IMPORTANT LESSON TO LEARN

SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU

I know you’ve all probably seen me stomping my feet and waving my arms around when I talk about this subject, but something happened this week that I thought was important to talk about again! And that is the importance of getting and comparing at least three quotes AND also educating yourself on any work you’re having done around your home. I was speaking to a roofer friend of mine and he told me about a client of his that had a leaking roof. She contacted a couple of different roofers and was told by both that she absolutely needed to replace her roof. She was given two quotes, both in the vicinity of $100,000.

Well, my mate looked at the roof and discovered that it didn’t actually need replacing. The tiles were fine and just needed a bit of TLC. He repaired her roof for $7000! My point here is that the first two presented no other option but to replace the roof. It was when she got the third quote that she actually realised there was another choice! When you call in a tradie, make sure you discuss with them ALL the options available, like replace versus repair. One more point I’d like to stress is that by inspecting and maintaining your roof on a regular basis you can save thousands towards the cost of a new one and almost double the life of your existing roof!
