WICKING BEDS
PERFECT DURING A DROUGHT Raised garden beds are popular but not great during drought due to high demand for water. A raised wicking bed on the other hand is super water efficient and productive! Wicking beds store water within their base so the soil can absorb what it needs – while eliminating runoff or evaporation.
They are low maintenance as they catch water from rain and can be filled up and then left for a period of time without monitoring. Here’s a quick guide to making a wicking garden bed – for full details visit our website. 1. Buy or build a raised garden bed then line with thick plastic

(with a hole for the required overflow). 2. Lay PVC pipe with holes drilled in it across the base and up the side of the bed. 3. Fill the bottom with stones. 4. Add a layer of geotech fabric to prevent the soil from muddying the water. 5. Fill to the top with good quality soil mix and fill the water reservoir. 6. Plant your favourite herbs or vegetables, and mulch around them. The beds will then ‘wick’ water from the reservoir at the base of the bed and will only need filling occasionally, depending on weather. The perfect solution during a drought!
