ALL DO BETTER
Society is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of environmentally responsible building and interior design. As a result, many of us are seeking to incorporate sustainable principles when decorating our homes. These easy interior styling principles can help reduce the negative environmental impact of our society and build a better, more sustainable future. Energy efficiency Energy consumption is one of the major contributors to climate change. Buildings are responsible for a big share of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, caused by energy consumption. We can do a lot to improve our home’s energy efficiency, mainly by reducing the amount of energy needed for heating, lighting, running appliances, etc., and by providing renewable, non-carbonbased energy to the building. Since most of the building’s heat escapes through windows, it’s important that the installed windows are of high quality and provide good insulation. Window coverings, blinds and shades enable residents to control the building’s temperature in an energy efficient way by opening and shutting them as needed. Carpets are also great insulators. It is estimated that a carpet retains as much as 10 per cent of a room’s heat. To save energy spent on lighting, a lot of energy can be saved by selecting the right colours. Friday, June 7, 2019
Lighter colours reflect more light, while rooms with darker walls and furnishings need more artificial lighting. Using reflective surfaces increases the amount of light in a room by bouncing it around, decreasing dependency on artificial lighting. Use sustainable and ethical products
The planet’s precious resources are limited, so discarding products as soon as they go out of style and replacing them with those that are currently trendy is no longer justifiable. These days, makers and developers for big brands are doing quite the opposite by thinking of ways to make our products last longer.
When selecting furnishing, consider preloved goods or brands that have undergone rigorous testing and hold sustainable and ethical licences. The world of design is becoming increasingly aware of the need for sustainable thinking and is experiencing a growing interest in sustainable trends, such as recycling, upcycling and repurposing. WAY TO KEEP WARM
In the blink of an eye we’ve gone from needing fans to heaters. This year it feels like we’ve jumped straight from summer into the middle of winter. One of the ways to quickly prepare your home for a quick drop in temperature is with window film. Solar control film has long been associated with keeping the heat out in summer, but there is a type of film that provides year-round thermal insulation – Low E film. “I admit it feels like a contradiction. How can a thin piece of film on your window manage heat in summer and also keep a home Friday, June 7, 2019
warmer in winter? It does this by controlling all forms of radiant heat – the type that’s lost to the outside in winter, and the heat coming in from the outdoors in summer,” said Ally Cronan, President of the Window Film Association of Australia and New Zealand (WFAANZ). The ‘E’ in Low E stands for ‘emissivity’, a material’s ability to emit radiant energy. Low E window films emit less infrared electro- magnetic energy than other materials, which means less heat transmission through the glass. In winter, objects inside the
room are warmer than the temperature outside. Those objects radiate heat towards the cooler outdoors, and that heat escapes through the glass. Low E film helps prevent the escape of radiant heat as the coating reflects a significant portion of it back into the room. According to WFAANZ distributor members, Low E films can help retain as much as half the heat inside the room on cold days. Then in summer, the same film blocks the sun’s heat from entering the glass from the outside. “Look for a Low E film with a WERS For Film star rating in cooling and heating, as these are
proven to provide benefit in both thermal conditions. In that sense, you can be assured the film will improve your home’s energy efficiency in all climates and across all seasons,” Ms Cronan said. “Low E film must be installed correctly to ensure optimal thermal performance. Always choose a WFAANZ member as they follow a code of practice and can recommend the best film for your needs. To find a professional in your area, please visit the WFAANZ website at www.wfaanz.org.au.” Visit www.wfaanz.org.au/wersfor-film for the WERS For Film rating tables. Home & Garden Magazine

SIMON’S HOUSE
Winter FIRE SAFETY SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU
House fires are an unfortunate part of winter. One recent fire involved an electric heater that was purchased five to six years ago and left in the box. When used, the heater ignited and caused significant damage. Anyone bringing out a heater that has been in storage is urged to check at www.recalls.gov.au to make sure they’re not using an unsafe product. After that, check out all the cords and plugs to make sure and give it a good wipe down before using it Another recent fire involved a cabinet gas heater. These noncompliant heaters are extremely dangerous because they use LPG cylinders which are not designed to be used indoors. They have
been banned in Australia but can still be found for sale online and at some markets. If you’ve got one, stop using it immediately! Here are a few tips for a safe winter: • Do not place room heaters too close to furniture, curtains or bedding. • Supervise children and pets at all times. Don’t allow them to play or sit too close to the heater. • Remember the rule: A metre from your heater! • Gas heaters must be certified and should be serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. • Always have a source of fresh air coming into a room when using a gas heater.
• Check and clean out your fireplace often. This includes having the chimney cleaned regularly to remove any soot, debris or build- up of cresote. This is very important!
For more information about home fire safety go to www. homefiresafetyaudit.com. I hope you have a safe and comfortable winter.
