CREATE FUN OUTDOORS MAKE YOUR BACKYARD A PLAYGROUND!
Longer daylight hours of summer are the perfect time for implementing outdoor activity ideas into your children’s routine to encourage them to play outside. And while daylight saving is almost over for another year, it’s time to get your thinking cap on for creative ideas because next summer will be here before you know it. These tips are great for creating an outdoor play area that the kids will adore. Active play Children love to be on the move and to encourage a variety of ways Friday, March 20, 2020
to keep them active think beyond just running around the yard. Include toys and resources that encourage a range of movements. For example, hopscotch, skipping, a trampoline, climbing ladders, slides, a swing set, rope swings, a trapeze, balance beams, stilts, scooters, balance ball, throwing, bouncing, catching, kicking: balls or a frisbee, T- ball, totem tennis or cricket. Sensory play Including sand, water or mud play spaces outdoors will make you popular with the family’s youngest members.
A permanent sandpit is fabulous, or alternatively, a range of smaller tubs to hold sensory materials works just as well. Other ideas for outdoor sensory experiences can include: bubbles, pebbles, leaves, pine cones and seashells.
imaginative play outdoors are endless – a cubby house or fort can become a pirate or a supermarket, a race track made in the sandpit or a fairy garden in a secret space in the garden.
Creative play Creative play is more than just painting or drawing. Look for ways to add music, building activities, and art experiences to your outdoor space.
Nature play Peak your child’s interest in nature and have them help to tend a vegetable garden or grow herbs. A magnifying glass and bug catcher, a bird feeder and bird bath or binoculars are great tools to share the joy of the outdoors.

GARLIC DELIGHT NOW’S THE TIME TO PLANT!
MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU
If I had to pick just one vegetable I couldn’t be without, it would have to be garlic. Luckily for fellow garlic enthusiasts, growing this flavoursome delight is pretty straightforward. Now is the perfect time to plant garlic with fresh bulbs available in garden centres. Originating from central Asia, garlic loves a sunny location in fertile, free- draining soil. You can improve your soil by digging in plenty of well-rotted organic matter, such as garden compost before planting. To avoid diseases, make sure you plant garlic that is meant for growing in a home garden, rather than supermarket produce. Begin planting by carefully breaking apart the bulb to separate the indi-
vidual cloves. Plant them pointy end up, about 15cm apart, leaving 30cm between rows. Cover them with soil so that the tips of the cloves are only just below the surface.
Garlic needs very little attention. Water if the weather is dry and weed between rows to prevent plants from getting swamped.
Occasional mulching during the growing season helps feed the plants, while keeping the ground cool and moist. You can also grow garlic in containers. Choose pots that are at least 20cm wide, with adequate drainage holes in the base. Plant the cloves so they are 10 to 15cm apart in each direction. Cover them with more potting soil then move to a sunny spot. Your garlic is ready to lift when the leaves have begun to turn yellow or die down. Use a fork or trowel to ease the bulbs from the ground then dry them out somewhere warm and airy. Once dry, brush off any remaining soil, cut off the leaves, then store in a cool, dry place with good airflow.

CREATING A NEW LOOK
HOW YOU CAN CHANGE WITH THE SEASONS The way we use the spaces in our home changes with the seasons, so why not change up the way it looks too! As we move into autumn and the cooler months, now is a good time to change things up in certain areas in the home. We all tend to spend more time at home in autumn and winter, so surround yourself with things that make you feel warm and cosy because you know what they say, a change is as good as a holiday! This can be done with the change of any season but for practical reasons, we suggest changing it twice a year. A simple way to change the look of a room is to change items such as artwork, soft furnishings and decorations in the room. Obviously, it would be expensive and impractical to change things such as sofas, so we suggest you start with neutral tones for the larger items and then change up cushions, vases, lamps and throws. Each time you change it back, it feels like you have a fresh new look all over again! In the wintertime, we can use heavier knitted throws and fluffy cushions in the bedrooms and living areas. Using warm colours such as burnt orange, mustard yellows and tan leathers can make the space look cosy, warm and inviting as well as being on trend. Just like we change our wardrobe from summer to winter, we can also change our bed linen for a fresh new look. This doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise and changing a few items can make a big difference to the space. So, what room are you going to start with as we move more into autumn?
