ENJOY THE OUTDOORS EXERCISE AND RELAX IN YOUR BACKYARD

Nature Play – Mindfulness in the great outdoors. Nature Play – Fuel for the soul. Nature Play – benefits for the whole family. There is no denying it, getting out in nature is fuel for the soul. We all depend on and need to embrace our surrounding environments for physical and mental stimulation. Extensive research shows the importance of connecting children with nature for outdoor discovery play. This interaction positively impacts their social, psychological, academic and physical health. We all want our children to have the time to be children but as Friday, March 6, 2020

adults, we have the mindset that we are too old to be playful. There is strong evidence that this could not be further from the truth. Play may be the very thing that keeps you young and healthy and decreases the risk of stress-related diseases, mental health issues, addiction and interpersonal violence. Instead of seeing ‘play’ as a waste of precious time, consider it an investment in personal and family wellbeing. There are many ways the whole family can connect and interact with their outdoor environments. During the week: • Walk the dog!

• Play a simple game of eye spy whilst walking. • Explore different walking routes. • Stop to smell the flowers (literally!). • Listen out for the birds whilst walking. You’ll return home, refreshed, and ready for the next stage of your day. Your best friend (your dog) and your health will thank you! Morning/evening exercise in the backyard: One person’s outdoor ‘play’ time, is another’s ‘me’ time. Plan time in the peace of your backyard for:

• Stretching. • Yoga. • Exercise. • Meditation and reflection. On the weekends: • Plan a bush walk. • Take a sketch pad and some crayons for nature drawing. • Join a local exercise group in the park. • Visit a playground. • Plant something, and watch it grow. If you have nowhere to play, contact Luke to book your FREE initial consultation, chat about your design ideas and reinvent your outdoor experience today! Home & Garden Magazine

MAKE IT LOOK GREAT ON ANY BUDGET!

Is your bathroom looking tired and outdated but you don’t have the funds for a full reno? Here are our tips for a quick and easy refresh of your bathroom without breaking the bank. Painting will always be one of the cheapest ways to update a room. Make sure you use appropriate paint for wet areas. Keep it light as you don’t want to close in the space with dark walls. Tiles outdated and tired? A great way to fix this problem is to spray paint the tiles white. White always looks fresh and clean. There are experts that can help you with Friday, March 6, 2020

this if you don’t want to tackle it yourself. Changing the tapware will make a surprisingly big difference to the bathroom. For a contemporary look, go with matt black tapware. Do yourself a favour and change your whole shower experience with a glam rain shower head. Changing the handles on the vanity can also make a big difference to the overall look for a small price. Clear all the clutter by removing everything from the vanity top and tidy up any open shelving of all the things we collect and shove

on the shelf because it’s convenient! Places like Ikea have some very practical draw dividers helping keep it all tidy on the inside! A candle with your favourite scent plus a matching soap dispenser and toothbrush holder are all that should be visible. The vanity and mirror. Are they beyond saving? If so, look at repurposing an old set of drawers or pick up a second- hand cupboard with a bit of character and refinish it. Make sure the dimensions are correct for the space you want to use it. Change the mirror to a circular one for a more contemporary look or something with a

black frame to match the tapware. Don’t forget about the lighting – a new pendant light or two either side of the mirror, hung at eye level, will work wonders. Accessorising is easy in the bathroom! Don’t forget to bring in some greenery, necessary in any space in our opinion, some wall art if you have a blank wall and some fresh new towels. Match them to your choice of artwork or pick something with a subtle pattern in your favourite colour to set a theme. Thicker towels look lush and more importantly, feel wonderful. Timber ladders are very on trend and super practical. Home & Garden Magazine

IN THE GARDEN

CLIMATE IS CRUCIAL PLANTING THE RIGHT BULBS

MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU

One of the most important things to consider when purchasing bulbs is to ensure you buy varieties that will reliably flower in your area. There are many bulbs that will flower beautifully in cooler climates and many that do well in warm zones too. Our local climate features a fairly cool but short winter, followed by a hot spring and summer – which is demanding on some varieties and rewarding on others. Many spring flowering favourites originate in cool climates where winters are long and very cold. Varieties such as Hyacinths, Daffodils and Tulips belong in this group. These bulbs need a very cold winter followed by a mild spring. To successfully grow

them in our area they would need several weeks of ‘chilling’ in a refrigerator prior to being planted

in the ground. To maximise success with them, choose early flowering varieties, chill the bulbs from now until planting late autumn or early winter, choose a cooler part of the garden and mulch well after planting. Varieties that do best in our local climate and won’t require chilling include Alliums, Babiana, Freesia, Ixia, Jonquils, Grape Hyacinth, Ranunculi, Snowflakes, Sparaxis, Triteleia, Tritonia and Ornigatholum. Alliums are a particularly great choice as they are pest resistant, drought resistant, great companion plants to vegetable crops and attract pollinators to your garden! By choosing varieties that cope with our demanding climate, you can ensure they naturalise well.
