INTERIOR STYLE

NIGHT’S SLEEP appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and protecting your precious lashes and brows.
It’s no mystery that an active lifestyle through regular exercise is important to our wellbeing. Many studies that have been popping up in recent years have shown that equally as important to our health and wellbeing, is relaxation and sleep. Creating a sensory atmosphere in our bedrooms that is conducive to restfulness can have a positive effect on our overall wellbeing. Having worked in the bedding industry, designing and developing rest-inducing products, I have gained some valuable insight into some easy ways to create a relaxing, all- round sensory sanctuary that even the likes of Goldilocks would easily succumb to. Linen for all seasons Don’t you just hate the feeling Friday, March 15, 2019
of waking up all hot and sweaty? Studies show that core body temperature has a huge impact on the quality of our sleep. Our body temperatures drop slightly to help initiate shut- eye, so naturally, the linen we sleep on makes a big difference. For an all season go-to, linen has great thermoregulating properties that keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. Sheridan’s stunning Abbotson Linen Collection is available in a range of colours suitable for all seasons. My hot styling tip for bed linen is to use a quilt and quilt cover one size larger than your bed for an ultra luxe draped look on your bed that you’ll just want to dive into. Lights out The amount of light surround-
ing us while we sleep directly affects the quality of sleep we get. This is especially relevant to shift workers who sleep during the day time. Sleep expert and Chief Dreamer at Delta Dreams (Instagram: @ delta_dreams), Aimee Griffiths says, “The part of the brain that controls our circadian rhythm is directly connected to our retina, so our body clock and sleep quality is significantly impacted by light.” So, the darker the room, the better the sleep. In the absence of heavy block- out curtains in the bedroom, I recommend sleeping in style with the Delta Dreams Silk Eye Mask which is not only effective in blocking light out, but is also great for minimising the
Scents to relax the senses Now that we have touch and sight covered in your sensory bedroom experience, let’s discuss smell. Essential oils are proven to have remedial properties in aiding sleep. They can be used in a number of ways before you sleep. You can light an oil burner in your room or place a few drops into a nice warm bath before you hop into bed. Note: Don’t leave a candle oil burner burning while you sleep. Make sure you blow it out before hopping into bed! Lavender Oil is a popular oil that helps reduce anxiety and is great for aiding in a peaceful sleep. Jasmine Oil can be helpful in cutting down restlessness during sleep and ancient Sandalwood is shown to have a sedative effect on the body, reducing wakefulness and encourages deep REM sleep. Essential oils have different effects on different people. The right scents for relaxation are the ones that make you tired and sleepy. Home & Garden Magazine

A PAINTING GURU
Home repairs and maintenance can generally be found at the bottom of a to- do list, especially when other commitments take precedence, but with a little DIY inspiration and easy-to-use tools, completing simple tasks could make a big difference to your home in minimal time. Like a blank canvas ready to be splashed with colour and life, freshly painted walls can dramatically change the entire look of a home’s interior and exterior. With the right painting tools, painting your home yourself is easy, budget friendly and can be a fun family activity too! Trojan’s new range of Paint Tools and DIY accessories offer convenient and cost-effective solutions to refresh your home easily and quickly. For long lasting effectiveness, when starting any paint job, by far the most important part of the project is the preparation of the surface to be painted. Friday, March 15, 2019
Here, Trojan offers these handy DIY painting preparation tips: • Before painting, remove any flaking paint, nails or loose material with a multifunction paint scraper. Trojan’s handy 6 in 1 Multifunction Paint Scraper (RRP $8.30) can remove paints and silicone, as well as pull nails, clean rollers, scrape points and open paint tins. • Fill cracks and holes with putty using a quality scraper. Trojan offers paint scrapers in a variety of widths from 25mm to 100mm allowing users to target a variety of area sizes. (RRP $5.10-$7.90) • Be sure to only sand areas once plaster or putty has dried. By sanding before painting you’ll achieve a smooth, consistent finish and will remove any imperfections on the surface. For exterior walls the Trojan Wire Brush with Scraper (RRP

$2.48) is ideal for removing rust, paint and stubborn debris from solid surfaces. For interior walls look to Trojan’s variety of sanding sponges. Washing or wiping down walls will help to provide a clean surface so paint adheres properly and distributes evenly. Use painter’s tape to mask off edges and trims. After applying the tape run a scraper knife over the top to ensure a good seal – there’s nothing worse than removing tape after painting only to discover that the paint has bled through! Rather than laboriously taping power points and light switches, remove covers with a screwdriver before painting then replace once paint is dry. Paint can often spill or spray, so protect furniture and flooring with drop sheets. Also have rags handy to wipe anything away. To avoid mess
and to open tins easily, use The Trojan Pail Opener (RRP $5.50), it works just like a bottle opener. • Always mix paint well before each painting session to ensure even coverage and colour is mixed in well. Use Trojan’s manual Paint Mixer Medium (RRP $8), or the Trojan Paint Mixer Drill (RRP $10.98), which easily fits to a standard power tool for an even faster mix. • Wash roller covers before use to remove extra fluff that can come off once you start painting. • If using old paintbrushes and rollers, make sure they are in good condition and free from dried on paint. To help improve their longevity, clean them after each use with the Trojan Paint Brush & Roller Cleaner (RRP $8.30). Trojan paint tools are available exclusively through Bunnings. SIMON’S HOUSE
Balcony SAFETY SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU
It doesn’t get much better – a sunny day out on the balcony with family and friends, steaks on the barbie and a cold beer – an Aussie tradition! But is there an accident waiting to happen? In the last few years, balcony collapses have caused a number of injuries and deaths. Any balcony or deck has the potential to fail if not properly maintained, coastal areas being at an even higher risk due to the corrosive elements. No matter what material your balcony is made from, it is imperative to inspect it regularly for signs of decay, corrosion, termites and any other sign of instability. If a problem is found get onto it immediately! What can you do? A good place
to start is to check Council records to make sure the proper building permits and approvals were issued. Another good idea is to have it inspected regularly by a Structural Engineer or Qualified Builder. Be diligent and on the lookout for any sign of rot, rust, cracking
in timber or concrete, abnormal movement or any other indication of deterioration. Not only on the top side, get underneath and have a look if possible. Try and avoid wetting the deck too often, sweep instead of hose. Place plants and pots in trays to prevent water from pooling.
