JETS TURN 105 The Newtown Jets celebrated their 105th birthday on January 8 and are gearing up for another big season in the NSW Cup. Head coach, Greg Matterson begins his sixth year at the helm of Sydney’s oldest club. There have been lots of changes in the competition this year so it remains to be seen if the club can hold onto their Premiership title.

orld renowned skate boarders and BMX riders will continue to descend on Dulwich Hill’s Jack Shanahan Reserve for the fi nal days of the Festival of Sydney’s Concrete and Bones Sessions today and tomorrow. Part theatre, part dance, part urban street sport, the Concrete and Bone Sessions were described by co-creator Mirabelle Woulters as a site specific work showcasing a mix of skills that blends bodies and wheels against the concrete

and graffiti of the Dulwich Hill skate park. “One thing that really struck me was the duets between people on wheels and people on feet and what comes out of that. It’s really beautiful – like they’re dancing together,” Ms Woulters said. She said one of the event’s aims is to intertwine youth activities like skate boarding, BMX riding and scooter riding – which are often marginalised by society – with other creative forms like theatre, dance and parkour. “It’s really beautiful theatre, it’s not just undisciplined youth. But a lot of the time these things get marginalised,” she said. Preparations for the sessions began in

November by consulting the youth who regularly use the park. Later, local youth were incorporated into the fi rst four days of the event. “We had them performing in the show as well, we had a few rehearsals with them. We were a bit worried about going in there and taking over, that they weren’t going to be happy with all these people running around in their skate park. So we really involved them,” she said. The fi rst Festival of Sydney event to be held at Dulwich Hill, Ms Woulters said the Concrete and Bones Sessions has so far been very successful. The fi nal two Concrete and Bones Sessions will take place on January 18 and 19 from 7pm.

f there’s one thing I hate in this world it’s a liar. Someone who pretends to be something they’re not. When they’re in the public eye, continually proclaiming their innocence it’s even worse. So you can imagine my surprise when reports came in claiming Lance Armstrong has fi nally come ‘clean’ to Oprah this week. Whilst we’re yet to see the interview, if the reports are true, he has confessed to doping. Some say it was only to clear his conscience – others believe he had no choice, that his hand was forced. His web of lies was coming apart around him and it was a matter of coming clean or be caught out once and for all. If it is the latter – to me that makes him a coward. Of course everybody makes mistakes (some are bigger than others) but it’s how

you handle them that really counts. I’ll always remember the way former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie dealt with a crisis. Unlike a lot of politicians when something went wrong, straight away he would call a press conference and say to the media “I’m sorry” or “there’s no excuse” or “the buck stops with me”. He always did it at the fi rst opportunity and people respected him for that. I respected him for that. Instead of pointing fi ngers and blaming others he stepped up to the plate and made sure the following days were spent trying to fi x the problem, not dodging the hard questions. I wish more people would adopt this mindset. You only have to watch Parliament to see how much time is wasted arguing

about stupid, trivial matters. It’s the same in normal life. If people are late – simply say you’re late and get on with the job. Don’t waste another 10 minutes making up an extravagant lie. Or if you don’t want to go somewhere just say so. Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. Because when you get found out, and eventually you will, it will be so much worse. People may not always like the truthful answer but they’ll respect you for being honest. If Lance has admitted drug use, people won’t agree with what he did but deep down people will be grateful that in the end he fi nally revealed the truth. Some will forgive him, some will not. But with the real story on the table at least people can now make up their own minds.

he story of Lance Armstrong – the cyclist who recovered from testicular cancer and went on to win the Tour de France a record seven times, the man who wrote a bestselling and inspirational account of his life, the charitable benefactor – seemed almost too good to be true. And it was. As early as Armstrong’s fi rst victory on the Tour in 1999, Sunday Times journalist David Walsh had reason to think that the incredible performances we were seeing from Armstrong were literally too good to be true. Based on insider information and research, he searched for the truth. In the autumn of 2012, the United States Anti-Doping Agency published a damning report on Armstrong that resulted in the American being stripped of his seven Tour victories and left his reputation in shreds. Walsh’s long fight to reveal the truth had been vindicated. Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong tells the compelling story of one man’s struggle to bring that truth to light against all the odds. FYI has 5 copies Seven Deadly Sins to give away. Smoking ban comes into effect VANESSA WATSON

mokers are no longer allowed to light up in many outdoor places after state-wide outdoor smoking laws came into effect earlier this month. Before January 7, smoking in Marrickville was controlled by Marrickville Council’s smoke-free outdoor environments policy, which bans outdoor smoking but is not actively enforced. The new state-wide laws mean smokers can no longer smoke at bus stops, taxi ranks, playgrounds, entrances to public buildings, public sports grounds and swimming pools. Marrickville Mayor, Victor Macri, described the change as a boon for businesses inside the Marrickville boundary but said enforcement of the laws would continue to prove quite difficult. “We were ahead of the time with our outdoor smoking policy,” Cr Macri said. “It’s a bit hard for shopkeepers to be policemen in this respect. They struggled, they really did, I felt for them. “Some business owners in Newtown stopped putting out ashtrays and people would just ash on the ground. If a business owner asks someone not to smoke at their café, the customer might say, ‘bugger off, I’m going to cross the road to the City of Sydney side’.” Asked if the Council would now pursue fi nes for outdoor smokers in light

S

of the state-wide bans, Cr Macri said the Council’s outdoor smoking policy was about community education rather than punitive measures. “It’s very hard to police basically. Our policy is more of a gesture to try to appeal to people’s sense of community, rather than taking a big stick and smacking smokers over the head,” he said. “It’s better now that the State Government brought this in and made it uniform, you can’t go from council to council with different rules on things like this.” NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, said the O’Farrell Government is leading the way in tobacco control measures and described the new laws as a great win for the people of NSW. “The distress that smoking infl icts on families and the burden this imposes on the health system, is simply unacceptable,” Ms Skinner said. She said smoking is a “scourge” that destroys the health of smokers and those unfortunate enough to be nearby when they light up. A Marrickville Council spokeswoman said no penalties have been issued to smokers in Marrickville since the council policy was introduced in July 2011. “While Council has not yet issued any fi nes it has, as part of its community education approach, provided information about the possible consequences of non-compliance,” the spokeswoman said.

Do you support the new law? Maurice Cespedes, Canterbury: Non-smoker I think that’s ridiculous, as long as smokers are outside and they’re not getting in anyone’s way, they’re not doing anything wrong. I used to smoke, so I know what it’s like. I think people just need to mind their own business. The government’s just trying to take advantage of people and give out as many fi nes as they can. Suliana Kami, Mascot: Non-smoker I guess it’s a good change but it’s kind of useless at the same time because as you can see it doesn’t really work. I don’t think they’d patrol it here but you might see it in the city. I don’t think they really care about these back streets. If someone’s smoke bugs me, I’ll move but I won’t get angry or ask them to stop. I’m used to it. Jessica Ross, Stanmore: Smoker I think the laws are wrong. As a smoker, I think a lot of courtesy comes into it as well. If I’m smoking and there’s a lot of children or people who obviously aren’t smoking, I’ll walk away.

Father’s book for bullying Local author offers a platform for parents to discuss bullying with their children VANESSA WATSON

book app about bullying by Marrickville father-of-three, Galvin Scott Davis, has struck such a global chord that it’s being turned into a stage show by students in the United States and is set to become a feature fi lm. Dandelion, one of the Australian iTunes store’s top selling apps for 2012, will be published as an e-book on March 15, the national day against bullying, and as a print book on April 1. It tells the story of Benjamin Brewster, who doesn’t like going to school because he’s picked on by other kids. Rather than attend the School for the Misguided, Benjamin escapes into a world of his own imagination, where he discovers magic dandelions that seem to make bullies disappear. “It became the number one book app within two weeks, it outsold Dr Seuss, Mr Davis said. “Then we decided we would create merchandise and do a print book. There will be two more books in the series as well. Mr Davis, a writer for fi lm and television, said he fi rst opted to make Dandelion a movie, but later realised the narrative would work better as an illustrated app or book. “We’re now in talks with fi lm companies about turning it into a feature fi lm, so where it began is where it will end up. Mr Davis’ inspiration for Dandelion

anything that gave me a platform to discuss what bullying was and why people might bully. I don’t think there are many kids out there who haven’t experienced some kind of bullying. “Nowadays when someone is bullied, it isn’t contained anymore, it spreads like wildfi re, it’s shared on YouTube and Facebook. It’s given the bullies a fake strength, the ability to rather than call someone a name in front of a small group

came after one of his sons experienced some bullying and he realised that despite his family’s enormous book collection, they didn’t have anything dealing with bullying. “It wasn’t one incident in particular that brought it about, it was really just a time of him feeling weak and me wanting to create a story that might make him feel strong, he said. “When I went to the shelf, I couldn’t fi nd

of people, to do it in front of millions. But Mr Davis warned readers he’s not out to offer a solution to bullying, but simply to explore the topic. “I’m just a writer, it’s just a beautiful story – hopefully it’s a story that speaks to people in different ways. The idea of the book is... also for kids to realise that strength isn’t just physical, which is why the tagline for the book is ‘bullying is for people with no imagination’.

14-year-old robber: Girl burned man s head

Live performances to celebrate January 26... vibrant mix of live entertainment is on offer to help celebrate Australia Day at Enmore Park on Saturday, January 26 from 3pm to 9pm. Celebrations will kick off with a performance from Marrickville youngsters, The Ukes of Today, and close with a spectacular family fi reworks fi nale at 9pm. The Ukes of Today, four school friends who play original, contemporary and classic rock songs with a folk twist on their ukuleles, were the winners of the 2012 Break Competition at the Marrickville Festival, which won them a spot on the 2012 Newtown Festival main stage line-up. Zimbabwean star Chris Gudu will also get the crowd moving with his live performance, offering a high energy, exhilarating and up tempo music often referred to as ‘Township Jive’. Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said the variety of performers and music styles will make the Australia Day picnic in the park a fun and unique experience for all. “It’s the perfect backdrop to celebrate Australia Day at Enmore, Cr Macri said. “The eclectic mix of music styles reflects Australia’s culturally diversity and Marrickville’s multicultural population. Enjoy the hits of yesteryear and current chart toppers with cover band Jellybean Jam, who offer a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of memorable tunes from disco, Motown, Latin, funk and pop. Seven piece extravaganza Righteous Voodoo will also take to the stage to deliver funk, soul, reggae, calypso and R&B. Also on offer is food from international food stalls, information stalls and free activities for children including a jumping castle, drumming workshops and the circus playground. Short and sweet New play explores dangers of texting

English conversation classes in 2013 The popular English conversation classes introduced by Marrickville Council in 2011 will be available again for residents this year. The classes are broken into two levels, beginners and intermediate, and help participants practice their English and learn about Australian culture. Marrickville’s culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) residents of all ages are encouraged to attend the free classes at Marrickville Library. The initiative is a partnership between Marrickville Council’s library and history services and Mission Australia. Registrations for the fi rst term will be held at Marrickville Library today, January 18, from 1pm – 2pm. The intermediate class is held weekly on Monday and Friday from 1pm – 3pm and the beginners’ class is held on Tuesday and Wednesday from 1pm – 3pm. The classes will be held throughout the year throughout four terms, with term one from January 28 to April 5, term two from April 22 to June 28, term three from July 15 to September 20 and term four from October 7 to December 13. Participants must register before attending a class. For more information contact the library on 9335 2173.

VANESSA WATSON

he perils of text messaging late at night will be explored by Stanmore actress Kate Coates in a 10 minute play as part of Sydney’s Short+Sweet theatre festival next week. Ms Coates, 21, said ‘While You Were Sleeping’ revolves around the play’s lead, Kym, who develops the unfortunate habit of ‘sleep texting’ people like her ex, her boss and her mum. “It’s a great comedy,” said Ms Coates, a third-year politics student at UWS. “It’s really well-written and it doesn’t drag.” Coates’ character – Jennifer, an executive assistant – arrives on scene after Kym sends her boss some late-night insurrectionary texts. “I pretty much come to say, ‘the boss saw your message, it’s all over Facebook, you’re fi red’,” she said. “We spend so much of our lives sending text messages, but do we really consider what we’re messaging about? “It’s pretty much a farce – we end up in Kym’s apartment early in the morning and my character discovers that it was sleep texting. It all gets out of hand and the police come. “I’m a huge fan of the comedian Stephen Colbert and he uses a quote to describe his character that also resonates with my character Jennifer, ‘She’s a well-intentioned, poorly-informed, high status idiot’.” In December, Coates was named runner up for best actress in the Crash Test Drama fi nals, where the production also won the popular vote. In October, the production won ‘Best Play’ at the Crash Test Drama feeder competition for Short+Sweet, which aims to help develop short play scripts.

Kate Coates performs in ‘While you were sleeping’.

Written by Alex Broun, While You Were Sleeping forms part of the Short+Sweet ‘top 80’ list of plays for 2013 and will be aired at Newtown’s King Street Theatre from January 23-27. For tickets or more information, visit www. shortandsweet.org.

recognised for doing something you love. “I love doing what I do and every year I dress my window. You’ll see one for Valentine’s Day soon and Mothers’ Day,” Ms Simms said. 2Spoilt, which sells a variety of high quality fashion, homewares and giftware, displayed a white Christmas tree with red and gold baubles in its shop front throughout December and stocked a cornucopia of Christmas treasures. 2Spoilt store assistant Karen Wiltshire said feedback from Christmas shoppers

about the shop’s festive range was very positive. “The emphasis here is on being different from other shops,” Ms Wiltshire said. “There was a beautiful white gold theme. The decorations were intricate and different from everywhere else. They loved all the Christmas-themed plates, the quality glass angels, lots of gold and silver balls, little bird statues with feathers and beautiful fairy lights.” She said customers also appreciated her value for money, the high quality gift

wrapping available in store, the smell of the candles burning and the tranquil feeling the music gives the shop. The judging criteria were based on the strength of stores’ Christmas-themed decorations, their product presentation and its relevance to the business, as well as ‘X Factor’ or originality. Second place was claimed by New Life Energy and third gong by Blooms the Chemist. Shop fronts with honourable mentions included The Salvation Army store, Nuna, The Smith Family shop and the Tra Mi restaurant. Chamber of Commerce president and Marrickville Councillor, Morris Hanna, described the competition as a great way to mark the holidays and help the local economy. “When you have a competition like this and everyone works hard, it makes Marrickville Road more attractive and can bring more business to the area, and that’s what we want,” Cr Hanna said. The competition complemented the Christmas tree and lights in Alex Trevallion Plaza.

Heat stroke

KEEPING FIT by David Stein

Gym talk

n Aussie summer is all about fun in the sun. Th is time of year people are spending long days outside whether it be on holidays by the beach or outside at home in the garden. Th is beautiful sunshine though can have horrible consequences for some people, especially during the heatwaves we have had. Your body will become stressed by the heat when it becomes dehydrated and therefore can’t cool itself enough to maintain a healthy temperature. Normally, sweating helps to maintain a healthy body temperature by increasing heat loss through evaporation. However, if you become dehydrated, you can’t sweat as much and your blood becomes concentrated causing electrolyte imbalance and impairment in organ functioning. All organs can be affected, including the hypothalamus in your brain where temperature is normally controlled. When your core body temperature rises above 40.5 degrees Celsius, the body’s internal systems can begin to shut down causing heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can develop rapidly. Symptoms and warning signs vary from person to person but may include very high body temperature, red, hot and dry skin with no sweating, dry swollen tongue, a rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness,

A

nausea, confusion, delirium, collapse and unconsciousness. If you are in a hot climate, doing vigorous exercise on a hot day or unable to stay in the shade, keep a look out for any of these symptoms or even better, prevent it by avoiding extreme temperatures altogether. Certain people are more susceptible to heat stroke such as young children, elderly people, pregnant women, lactating mothers and athletes. To prevent heat stroke, drink plenty of water or other cool, non-alcoholic beverages. In a heat wave, reduce physical activity and rest often. Take time to check on your elderly family or anyone you are concerned about as they may need your help to cope with the heat. Of course, never leave anyone or any pets in a closed, parked car. If you are at home you could also have cool showers and turn the air conditioner on. If you notice signs of heat exhaustion, immediately try to cool the person down by wetting them and fanning. Offer cool water. Place ice packs in areas such as the armpits and groin and forehead. Take it seriously and call for medical help whenever you are concerned. So this summer, enjoy the hot weather, but be aware of the dangers it can bring and know what to do about it. That is your best defence!

T

o some people gym talk can sound like a foreign language so here’s a couple explanations of terms. Aerobics/Cardio. These are exercises that are strenuous enough to temporarily speed up your breathing and heart rate. E.g. running, cycling, walking, swimming or dancing. Max Heart Rate. Your rate is affected by your fitness level. An estimate of a person’s maximum age-related heart rate can be obtained by subtracting the person’s age from 220. Flexibility training or stretching. Th is type of workout enhances the range of motion of joints. Age, injury or inactivity can cause muscles, tendons and ligaments to shorten over time. Contrary to popular belief however, stretching and warming up are not synonymous. In fact, stretching cold muscles and joints can make them prone to injury. Strength, weights, or resistance training. Th is type of exercise is aimed at improving the strength and function of muscles. E.g. Weight lifting or exercising by overcoming some form of resistance, exercises like pushups in which you work against the weight of your own body. Specific exercises strengthen different muscle groups. Set. Th is term refers to repeating the same exercise a certain number of

Elisha is a registered nurse and midwife who has years of experience working in emergency departments, general wards and maternity wards

times in a group. For instance, a weight lifter may do 10 biceps curls, rest for a few moments, then perform another “set” of 10 more biceps curls. Repetition or “rep”. Th is refers to the number of times you perform an individual movement during a set. For example, the weightlifter mentioned above performed 10 reps of the bicep curl exercise in each set. Warm up. Th is is the act of preparing your body for the stress of exercise. The body can be warmed up with light intensity aerobic movements like walking slowly. These movements increase blood flow, which in turn heats up muscles and joints. Always warm up the specific parts you will be using. At the end of your warm-up, it’s a good idea to do a little light stretching. Cooldown. Th is is the less-strenuous exercise you do to cool your body down after the more intense part of your workout. For example, after some sprints, you might walk at a reduced speed for a while until your breathing and heart rate slow down. Stretching is often part of a cooldown. So now you can talk the talk, go walk the walk!

Entertainment

www.innercityweekender.com.au

CHATTER ON THE BOX WITH NATHAN TAYLOR There was a swag of winners from this week’s Golden Globe Awards, which includes winners for television as well as movies. Some of the major television winners included ‘Homeland’ which picked up Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor (Damien Lewis) and Best Drama Actress (Claire Danes); ‘Game Change’ which took home Golden Globes for Best TV Movie or Mini-Series as well as Best Actress (Julianne Moore) and Best Supporting Actor (Ed Harris); and lastly the Foxtel show ‘Girls’ surprisingly won Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress (Lena Dunham). Some big news broke this week over at ‘Today Tonight’ with ex-Channel Ten news presenter Helen Kapalos named as host of the controversial Channel Seven program. Kapalos replaces the likeable Matt White

and hopes the new ‘Today Tonight’ will feature more hard-hitting stories. However, it’s not quite known just how much say Kapalos will have on the stories that get produced. One thing that could really hurt the ‘TT’ brand is if it goes too serious with an overkill of political and international news. If people want that then they usually tune in to the ABC or SBS. Don’t be surprised if we do see a change but then a back flip if ratings dwindle. Lovers of Ellen DeGeneres received awesome news last week with the announcement that the talk-show queen will be heading to Sydney to film segments for her top-rating show. Ellen went all ‘Oprah-style’ in her announcement that saw 400 audience members receive a seven night trip to Australia as well. No details have been released as yet regarding

her filming schedule and whether she will produce any full episodes here but I’ll let you know when they do. Children’s TV show host, Shura Taft, has been named as the new host of popular Channel Seven series, ‘The Mole’. Taft replaces Tom Williams and Grant Bowler, who hosted previous versions of the show in the last decade. ‘The Mole: Culture Clash’ will begin filming soon, with the series to air later in the year. Plenty of shows are coming back over the next few weeks including ‘Home and Away’ which returns this Monday, January 21 at 7pm. Fresh episodes of the ever popular ‘Glee’ are also back on Ten, starting off with a double-episode from Wednesday, January 30. And after all the promos that we have been bombarded

with, ‘The Block: All-Stars’ will finally go to air Monday, February 4 at 7pm on Nine. Lastly, very exciting news for comic book fans with Joss Whedon’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ pilot likely to receive a series pick-up. ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is a loose spin-off from the movie blockbuster ‘The Avengers’ that Whedon directed and will also see Clark Gregg reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson. ‘S.H.I.E.L.D’. is a fictional espionage and law-enforcement agency in the Marvel Comics Universe, which has been featured throughout many Marvel films including ‘The Avengers’, ‘Thor’ and ‘Iron Man’. The new show has been described as “intense, epic, funny and silly”. If picked up, the show will air later this year and is sure to develop a great following given the film’s success at the box office.

Jets celebrate birthday ahead of the start of the 2013 season he Newtown Jets celebrated their 105th birthday on January 8 as their players prepare for the fast-approaching 2013 rugby league season. The Jets are in the unaccustomed role of being the defending premiers after disposing of Balmain by 22-18 in the 2012 NSW Cup Grand Final, played at the ANZ Stadium on September 30. With the new season, head coach Greg Matterson begins his sixth year at the helm of the oldest club in the game, while his experienced assistant coaches Darryl Neville and Daniel Wortley are both still on board with the club. The club lost several players from last year’s premiership-winning team but will gain the services of some outstanding young players who have graduated upwards from last year’s Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup (Under 20’s) squad. Newtown’s fi rst trial match for 2013 is against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Belmore Oval on Sunday, February 10, with the kick-off time still to be confi rmed. There will be 13 teams in the 2013 NSW Cup competition. Balmain and Western Suburbs clubs have merged to become a single Wests Tigers entity, while the Wyong Kangaroos were granted permission by NSW Rugby League to leave the Newcastle Rugby League competition and to join the NSW Cup ranks. Just weeks out now from the start of season and the club is hopeful that 2013 will prove to be a successful year.

Sport The Shocking Truth About Roof Restoration If you’ve ever been concerned about the condition of your roof, then this could be the most important article you read this year.

Unscrupulous roof restoration salespeople have been telling unsuspecting homeowners that they need a full roof restoration (clean, repair, re-point, seal, and paint) when in many cases all that they need is a simple repair. This has been going on for years but in recent times has reached epidemic levels. Here’s what typically happens... A telemarketer or door-to-door canvasser offers you a free roof inspection. Sounds like good idea right...? It is a good idea unless the roof inspector (usually a salesperson) does what unfortunately happens in many of these instances: he or she will grossly exaggerate the problems and insist that you really need a full roof restoration when perhaps you don’t. Now there are many instances where a roof restoration is beneficial. But there are also many instances where all you may need is simple roof repair. Local company Reliance Roof Restoration offer a free roof safety inspection where you get the option of actually seeing your roof close up. Any problems are actually pointed out to you. That way, you can be certain that any problems they advise you of are real and not made up or exaggerated. You can either accompany the inspector on the roof, or if you’re unable to do that, you’ll be shown photos taken on a high resolution digital camera. If your roof is fine and needs no work at all, then Reliance will advise you of that. If all that you need is

a small repair, then Reliance will advise you of that. If you’d like to have your roof restored, that’ fine... Reliance would be happy to provide a quote for this service. If you would like a quote on having your roof restored, you’ll get $600 off the quote if you call by next Wednesday. By the way, you’ll be placed under absolutely no obligation whatsover and this service is free for anyone with a home that’s over 12 years in age. So if you are concerned about the condition of your roof and you’d

Here’s what one satisf ed client said of their experience in dealing with Reliance Roof Restoration: “A professional approach by all associated with the job. I was impressed with your attention to detail and advice on other (snall) problems. Follow-up inspection and after job touch-up work was particularly impressive. The friendly nature of all the workers made them a pleasure to deal with. I would have no hesitation in recommending ‘Reliance Roof Restoration’ to anyone wanting their roof restored.” Ken Durham like a free safety inspection, or if you like a free quote on having your roof restored, then call Reliance on 1300 300 748 or visit their website at www.relianceroof. com. Fraser Park Football Club wants $2 million to upgrade its ageing grandstand with a new facility. Photo: Vanessa Watson

Call for new stadium Council supports call for funds, push for A League sports football ground requirements to enable participation of Fraser Park Football Club teams in a higher standard of football competition. “Our goal is to grow the club and move forward to league one. We are league two now. If international teams want to play against Australia, they could also use those facilities,” Mr Cerqueira said. He said the club would also offer the upgraded facility to local schools for use during school sporting carnivals. “We are working for the Marrickville community, we need A League sports for our people.”

they’ve just opened their new auditorium at the end of last year and they have new synthetic soccer fields,” he said. “We’ve got huge pressure on our soccer fields; the more we diff use that pressure the better.” Cr Macri described the current state of the park as “a bit of a rough diamond” and said an upgraded Fraser Park would provide opportunities for younger generations to develop sporting skills in a family-friendly, community environment.
