WESTCONNEX Greens Councillors are calling for more action from Mayor, Victor Macri to pursuade the State Government to establish a WestConnex motorway taskforce. A report to Council on Tuesday showed that very little has been to done to establish a taskforce since it was originally called for back in October according to Greens Cr David Leary.

Man who hit Emma de Silva given community service

T

he man driving the car that hit Emma de Silva in St Peters two years ago has avoided jail time over the incident. 27-year-old Bryce James Wayland was this week ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and had a 15-month driving ban slapped on him. Ms De Silva has been left with long term disabilities after she was hit by the car whilst walking on a footpath with her 19-day-old daughter on the Pacific Highway in March 2011.

Mr Wayland was found guilty last year of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm, but a magistrate this week said his culpability was “very low”. Mr Wayland had told police that he mounted the kerb when his accelarator pedal became caught under a floor-mat and jammed. Community outrage has followed the sentence given the long-term impact the accident has on Ms de Silva, who now lives with her father and a carer in Penrith. She has gone from being a perfectly healthy woman in her 30’s to struggling with basic life skills such as speaking and talking.

Appearing on Nine News this week, Ms de Silva admitted that she “wished she was dead”. “I’ve suffered a lot for his mistakes,” she said. “I had to learn how to walk and talk again. I had to learn how to eat properly. All because he hit me.” Mr Wayland could have been sent to jail for nine months, but the magistrate said that was not warranted. “I feel sad that he hit me but I feel sorry for him,” Ms de Silva told Nine. “He couldn’t control the car.” Ms de Silva has a dream to live independently and have more children.
