CALL FOR LAND Greens candidate for Grayndler, Hall Greenland, is calling on the State Government to hand over lands adjacent to Leichhardt High School. He says that the school is overcrowded, that the heritage buildings on the land would make suitable classrooms and is rallying support for the cause.

Park will trial off-leash hours to delight of residents BASIL NAIMET

esidents of Stanmore have smiles as wide as the Cheshire cat following a unanimous decision by Marrickville Council to allow dog owners to walk their dogs “off leash” at Weekley Park in Stanmore. The move will be trialled, due to begin shortly, and will allow dog owners to walk their dogs without a leash between the hours of 5pm and 8am. The motion which had been put to the Council

previously, was passed on Tuesday night. A packed public gallery was in attendance to support the motion and Councillor Jo Haylen who brought the motion initially. The commitment from the residents was strong as a number of residents spoke glowingly to the Councillors of a community brought together through the mutual activity they shared. Cr Haylen was pleased with the outcome and thanked the residents for their support. “I would like to congratulate all the residents who organised and signed the petition in supporting a timed dog off-leash area at Weekley Park,” she said.

260 residents had signed the partition to introduce the trial, however it was the support of non-dog owners that tipped the decision in their favour. “Even non-dog owners have spoken or emailed me in support of this, which shows how important it is for the community,” she said. The motion will also adjust the times the park can be used during daylight saving hours. In a similar decision Cr Haylen also welcomed the passage of a motion recently to see Camperdown Memorial Rest Park modified with off-leash hours operating 24 hours during weekdays.
