T
he resurrection of Camperdown Bowling Club may be in the offi ng with tenders put out for a licensee who will rejuvenate the club with amenities and recreational facilities that won’t include pokies. The Greens Party led by Marrickville Councillor Sylvie Ellsmore have successfully moved a motion that will ban pokies and have them removed when the club is restored. “I am very proud that Council has now confi rmed it will be moving to fi nd a licensee who
will revive the Club without poker machines,” she said. She said the club was a great entertainment venue and so reviving the club from its current receivership situation was vital. “Having someone come in and make it a viable business without pokies is what was needed.” She said gambling was a social problem that also needed to be addressed. “Australians spend nearly $1 billion a year on pokies and three quarters of people who have a serious problem with gambling are pokie players. One in six people who play the pokies regularly have a serious addiction,” she said.
Other clubs in the Inner West have become successful without pokies, for example the Petersham Bowling Club. “It’s [now] a great place for younger families, and a regular place for local musicians,” she said. When completed, the new look Camperdown Bowling Club will be enticing families and there is hope, that with the right licensee, further opportunities will arise to enhance the club. Following on from this success, the Greens have called for a report on the use of poker machines and gambling in Council owned and controlled venues, which will be debated at an upcoming Council meeting.
