But an uncontested Julia Gillard retained leadership of the Labor Party and her job as Prime Minister after an unprecedented show of solidarity from former Prime Minister,

Kevin Rudd and well-known Rudd supporter and Grayndler MP, Anthony Albanese. Shortly after lunch on Thursday, Mr Crean, who has since been stood down as Minister for Regional Australia, informed the nation that he had asked the Prime Minister for a leadership spill, stating his support for Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister and his own ambitions to be Deputy Prime Minister. “It seems to me the party, through the Government, is in a stalemate position. Something needs to be done to break this deadlock, to resolve the issue once and for all, and to enable us to get on with the job that
