THINK PINK October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia. One in eight are likely to be diagnosed. Across the community a number of ‘pink’ events have been held to raise awareness of this startling fact. We joined Marrickville MP, Carmel Tebbutt’s pink ribbon breakfast to show our support.

Street gets residents thinking about men’s health VANESSA WATSON
N
ovember marks the month of Movember, when men put down their razors and let their facial hair grow freely for 30 days to help change the face of men’s health. But it’s not just men’s facial hair that’s changing – don’t be surprised if you spy a new Marrickville laneway named to spark community conversations about men’s health issues. On Tuesday, Marrickville Mayor, Victor Macri joined Movember Australia’s Chris Hill to unveil
Movember Lane street signs at a previously unnamed lane outside the Addision Road Centre (ARC). One sign was placed at the ARC entrance off Addison Rd and another where the ARC circle street splits right and left, where both will remain for the duration of the month. Cr Macri said he was considering moving a mayoral minute to make the name change permanent. “We have to raise awareness in the community about men’s health issues. Prostate cancer is a really big one – I’ve had a number of friends and family members who have been affected.” Cr Macri encouraged male residents to get
their prostates checked as a precaution. “It’s got a good survival success rate if you pick it up early. I think men tend to not look after themselves as they should and get regular checks.” Mr Hill, also encorages women to get involved. “We love a mo’ sister. It’s often your sister or your girlfriend or your mum who’s pushing you to go to the doctor.” The lane’s name change will become official on Sunday, October 28, with a community barbecue and pop-up barber shop from 9am to celebrate. See the website, au.movember.com for more details about the Movember campaign.

W
hat would you give up to buy a lotto ticket? How much would you spend for the chance to win millions
of dollars? Th is is what we asked viewers on ‘A Current Affair’ this week – and their answers were breathtaking! One person said they sometimes go without food to buy lotto tickets... another man told us he quit smoking, while others said they gave up basic necessities to cover the cost of extra tickets when one of the big lotteries comes around. For this week’s $50 million draw, an astonishing 25,000 tickets were being sold every hour. I mean sure $50 million would be fantastic – I can already imagine the house on the beach and the Ferrari
parked in the garage – but the odds of actually winning are very slim. In fact a $14 entry gives you a 1 in 3.7 million chance of taking home division 1. So surely that’s not worth giving up dinner for? Newsagencies told us they’ve had customers come in and put $3,500 on one draw. To me this is insane. Unless you’re already a multimillionaire it just doesn’t make sense. Th ree and a half grand is a small car or your electricity, gas, water and insurance bills for the entire year. Some newsagents told us they even had to put on extra staff to cope with the number of customers. Some were selling 2,000 tickets per day. Of course we did speak to some past winners – but one man told us he spent $1,000 and won $80.
So I’m not sure I’d really classify that as a win. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t buy a ticket in this week’s mega draw. I too was sucked in by the thought of becoming rich overnight but I can honestly say I would never go without food to do so. But I guess that’s the problem with gambling. Until you lose you think you are going to win. And that’s exactly what the organisers prey on. Even though the prize is inflated to a huge amount of money they know they’ll recoup all the entire jackpot and more in ticket sales. It’s only a matter of time before there’s another one and the frenzy starts again. Because we all love to day dream about winning the big one – just make sure you’re not sacrificing too much for your shot.

e all love our beautifully unique country, so why not celebrate what it means to be Australian by hearing our nation’s favourite poets come alive in song. Come along and celebrate all that Australia has to offer with Gavin Lockley and friends on Wednesday, October 31 in a one off concert affectionately titled ‘My Country Australia’. Breaking bread for cancer Breast cancer survivors and supporters think pink to raise research funds VANESSA WATSON
bout 50 guests broke bread together at Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt’s fi fth pink ribbon breakfast fundraiser for breast cancer research on Wednesday morning. Con and Soula Kazantzidis of The Last Drop Cafe were busy brewing non-stop coffees for guests from 7.45am, with a breakfast buffet laid out amongst pink balloons, streamers and smiling faces. During a short speech, Ms Tebbutt told guests the day was not only about raising money for breast cancer research but about bringing the community together. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia and one in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime,” she said. About $670 was raised on the day for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. A raffle was drawn and a pink, knitted tea cosy was presented to the winner. Marrickville Deputy Mayor and cancer survivor, Cr Emanuel Tsardoulias, who suffered an ocular melanoma 18 months ago and wears a glass eye, said the breakfast was a great way to directly support locals living with breast cancer. “As a cancer survivor, I think it’s really important that we get behind and support this,” Cr Tsardoulias said. “I’m really proud that Marrickville and

Dulwich Hill women have come together,” Cr Jo Haylen added. “Everyone knows someone who’s been touched by breast cancer and I give credit to the Pink Ribbon Foundation for running such a successful and awareness and fundraising campaign.” Ashbury resident Jenni Pendergast, who is currently battling breast cancer, said she doesn’t think there are many people left in
society who don’t know someone affected by breast cancer, but that promising medical advances are taking place. “My cousin was 35 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and her mother died of it when she was three. “I lost my cousin to breast cancer 10 years ago and from then to now, all the money raised, all the government funds, it’s just amazing the progress... made.”
Ms Pendergast, has just commenced a new breast cancer treatment trial at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Fellow breakfastgoer Julie Muir, of Ashbury, said she’s been attending the breakfasts for about five years or since they started. “They usually have it every second year in Marrickville at The Post Cafe. I just think it’s a fantastic idea. It’s just talking to other women and making connections.”

Mayor claims Festival “the Over 50,000 people came to the the streets of Marrickville to participate in the VANESSA WATSON
he 2012 Marrickville Festival ended with spontaneous street dance to ‘Afro-Australian’ band Keyim Ba – the perfect celebration to end a fun-fi lled day. An array of young and old got into the fanfare with Marrickville Council’s crowd count at about 50,000 people throughout the day-long annual street party. In the morning, students from South Marrickville’s Ferncourt Public School performed their own spin on Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’. Later, poets, spoken word artists and comedians took to the stage for the ‘War of Words’ competition. Representatives from local police and fi re brigades attended, with fi re fighters from Marrickville’s C Platoon opening their truck for interested toddlers and passing on fi re safety advice to the public. Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said the festival was a great day and “very relevant” to the diverse people of the area. “It was a great day, the community got out to enjoy it, the local talent on display was incredible. It was – for me – the best one yet,” Cr Macri said. “It’s about getting the community out of their homes and getting them to mix and meet each other.” The highly anticipated ‘The Break’ band competition was claimed by local band Ukes of Today, who won a recording session at Zen Studios and their name on the musical line-up for ever popular Newtown Festival.

Making a difference: Carers share their tales of hardship he children and carers of Pathways Early Childhood Intervention were paid a special visit by Grayndler MP, Anthony Albanese, and Parliamentary Secretary for Disability and Carers, Senator Jan McLucas to celebrate Carers Week. Carers Week, which ran from October 14 to 20, is a national celebration to recognise and support Australia’s 2.6 million carers who are making a difference in the lives of others. Mr Albanese said he was proud to support carers in the inner west like those at the Marrickville service.

“Many carers work, sometimes 24 hours a day to care for a friend, family member or others in the community,” he said. The centre’s Director, Sylvana Mahmic said over a dozen parents spoke passionately about living with children with disabilities with Mr Albanese. “There were some tears for some, just for telling their stories,” Ms Mahmic said. Volunteer recognised for services to local police VANESSA WATSON
empe civilian and semi-retired chiropractor, Anamari Nelson, has been named a fi nalist in the 2012 Rotary Clubs of NSW Police Officer of the Year awards for her volunteer work with Newtown Police. Ms Nelson, 47, was nominated in the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ and is one of the 15 fi nalists from across the state recognised for going above and beyond the call of duty. For three years, Ms Nelson has helped Newtown Local Area Command by following up with victims of crime, for example, by mailing information to break and enter victims on how to avoid a repeat break-in and by educating the public on crime prevention strategies at community events like local festivals. She also assists the mounted units and Marine Command of NSW Police with administrative tasks and events organisation. When asked what inspired to volunteer with the police, Ms Nelson said that of all the essential services, the “police are the most essential”. “It’s a bit like housework, no one notices how the food got in the fridge, the clean clothes in the wardrobe or the clean plates... but (they) certainly notice when it doesn’t happen,” Ms Nelson said. “Imagine the chaos that would ensue if it didn’t happen.” In November, Ms Nelson will attend a gala dinner at Doltone House, Pyrmont, when the state’s top cops and civilian staff will be named by NSW Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione. “When you are surrounded by dedicated people, it’s an honour and a little bewildering to fi nd you rate a particular mention,” she said. Newtown Local Area Commander,
T
Anamari Nelson will be recognised for her volunteering.
Superintendent Simon Hardman praised Ms Nelson’s dedication and her work ethic. “On behalf of the entire Command, I would also like to thank her for her efforts,” he said. “Anamari does a great job and it’s reflective of the entire Command’s attitude when it comes to serving and protecting the community.” Asked about her favourite memory from her time with the Newtown Command, Ms Nelson recalled this year’s Mardis Gras Parade, when she walked behind the police contingent.
COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Community groups, schools, local artists, cultural groups and the general public are invited to apply for funding to host cultural activities as part of Marrickville Council’s Open Marrickville Festival in June 2013. The council is looking for a range of activities, such as cooking classes, poetry readings, craft and traditional arts workshops, exhibitions and cultural events. Open Marrickville celebrates the culture and diversity of Marrickville through storytelling, music, dance, art, theatre, food and simply gathering together. Open Marrickville unlocks the talents and creativity of local communities and celebrates the many and varied cultures in Marrickville. Marrickville Mayor, Victor Macri, said Open Marrickville is an opportunity to create positive connections across all generations and cultures in our community. “Our young people are encouraged to take pride in their cultural background, and understand their parents’ and grandparents’ history and values,” Cr Macri said. “By involving all of the community in organising events for Open Marrickville, we believe this results in a deeper cultural understanding, and more valuable experiences.” Successful grant applications will encourage younger Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) community members to connect with and learn about their individual cultures, and to share these cultures with friends, family and the broader community. The fi rst Open Marrickville festival was held last year and over 6,000 people attended 19 exciting and original events. Highlights included hearing stories from Marrickville migrants from the community about their journeys to Australia through the ‘Inner West Cultural Services’ Marrickville Stories: A Celebration of Digital Storytelling’ and Cigdem Aydemir’s (Dis)Position exhibition, held at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery. Grants of up to $5,000 are available for suitable groups. Guidelines for applications and funding are available on Council’s website. Applications close at 5pm Tuesday, November 6.

At NOM Pizza there is one rule - pizza without compromise Starting from the woodfired Ambrogi pizza oven shipped in from a little village just south of Milan, is a little pizzeria with one single intention, to take you back to the origin of pizza, reminiscent of the original Margherita created in Pizzeria Brandi this time with a modern Australian twist.

Head Pizzaiola Raffaele Magliulo is excited to have the opportunity to introduce his craft to Marrickville, having studied and worked for years in his home town Napoli, the birth place of Pizza. Being the only woodfired pizzeria in Marrickville, there was definitely high expectations, with a mix of traditional Neapolitan pizzas and modern classics, NOM Pizza are fast becoming a crowd favourite for locals and out-of-towners alike. Raffaele explains that while you wouldn’t find a pizza like the Pumpkin & Fetta or a Tropicana in Napoli, it is great fun to be able to offer traditional pizzas inspired by modern Australian cuisine.

A Port that is a family affair
T
he Symington family in Portugal’s Douro Valley have been making Port for more that 350 years, with 12 Symingtons currently working in the family business. Six of the Symingtons are the 13th generation of the family, and one was named Decanter Magazine’s Man of the Year 2012, the first time anyone from Portugal has ever received such recognition. With 920ha under grapes for Port making, the family is the biggest landowner in the Douro Valley, and when it recently acquired major competitor Cockburn’s, it pushed combined sales of all the family’s Port companies to over one-third of all premium Ports world-wide. Dan Murphy’s boasts it has virtually a Port from the Symington stable for every taste and every budget, with some five Cockburn’s ranging from just $19.99 for a Fine Tawny, to $59.99 for the top-of-the-range Cockburn’s Quinta dos Canais Vintage Port. They also have three Blandy’s Ports that are also sourced from Symington’s – a Madeira Five Year Old Malmsey and Aged Five Years Bual Madeira ($29.99 each) and a Blandy’s Madeira 10 Year Old Malmsey at $49.99. Many of us seem to have forgotten the enjoyment of a good port, but with spring
and summer coming up, it can be a most delightful drop served lightly chilled with everything from fruity desserts to cakes, chocolate puddings and cheeses. One for lunch: Victoria’s BlackJack Vineyards in the Harcourt Valley just south of Bendigo got more rain between January and March 2010 than they’d seen for the same period in around a decade, yet actually seemed to refresh the vines. Amongst the results is a 2010 BlackJack Block 6 Shiraz that’s come up as a really good red to drink young, teamed with flavoursome lamb shanks done in a slow cooker for $40.

When asked about the group’s decision to start a health and fitness centre, Chris said the journey started more than two years ago when the partners all met whilst working at a gym. “We all attended the same gym while getting fit and started to develop a bit of camaraderie,” he recalled. “It was a two-pronged decision. One, we obviously wanted somewhere for us to maintain our personal fitness, but more importantly we wanted to make a difference for the community.” Mr Exarhos described the Box HQ
concept as “all your health, fitness and wellbeing needs, including cardio, weights, boot camp and CrossFit in one complex”. The partners even have plans to ramp up Box HQ’s community engagement by starting conversations with local schools and local sporting associations about nutrition. “Statistics tell us that the Australian public has an obesity issue. A very significant part of our membership drive was what we call ‘body transformation’, which is also focused on nutrition and weightloss.”

Boot camp trainer, Aaron Patchett (aka ‘Patch’) said Box HQ’s boot camp sessions are offered before and after work in small outdoor groups. “We normally knock out at least 400 ab movements or crunches, plus UBMs or ‘upper body movements’,” he said. “We’re not stationary. We start and fi nish in one spot, however the session takes us roaming all over – the landscape dictates the circuits.” To inquire about BOX HQ memberships or fi nd out more about one of Five Dock’s most popular gyms, call 1300 026 947 or visit www.boxhq.com.au.

The next month should see a rapid increase in your wealth. To make the best of this opportunity you’d better dust off the account books and take a good look at the figures. Are you always tired? Q. I’m always tired and never seem to have any energy. Could you give me some ideas about how to boost my energy levels? A. Low energy is one of the main complaints I hear from my patients. Here are my top 10 tips: 1. Have a blood test to check for anaemia and low thyroid function. Both these conditions will make you feel tired and washed out. 2. Eat more protein – good quality protein such as eggs, fish, lean beef, lamb, pork and chicken give you sustained energy, much more energy than carbohydrates like bread, rice and pasta. Try to have some protein at breakfast, lunch and dinner and you will feel the difference. 3. Get enough sleep – if you’re not getting enough sleep on a regular basis (for most people that is eight hours per night), you are building up a sleep debt. In other words your body is getting more and more tired as the days go by. If you suffer from sleep problems such as insomnia try using herbs such as chamomile, hops, kava or valerian. 4. Drink two litres of water every day – believe it or not, simply being dehydrated makes you feel exhausted! 5. Get some exercise – regular exercise
KEEPING FIT by David Stein
We’ve been doing it all wrong is a great way to build energy. Try walking for 40 minutes, four times a week and you’ll be amazed how much more energy you have as you get fitter. Go for a walk in the morning and see how good you feel! 6. Stop stressing and relax more! There’s nothing more exhausting than being stressed. Make time to do the things you love and that relax you – reading, gardening, listening to music or yoga. 7. Take supplements – a number of vitamins and minerals can give you a powerful energy boost – especially magnesium, B vitamins and CoQ10. 8. Eat regularly – every three hours. Low blood sugar levels is a major cause of fatigue. Eat healthy snacks such as a small handful of raw nuts, hummus dip with carrot sticks, or a small tub of low fat yogurt. 9. Have regular habits – we feel best when we have regularity in our lives – go to bed and get up at the same time, eat at the same time and try writing a routine. 10. Have fun! Having fun with friends and family, enjoying a good laugh and seeing the lighter side of life all boost your energy and make you feel good, so make sure you are spending 30 minutes each day taking pleasure in fun activities that will hopefully keep you smiling for hours.

e humans have really got it wrong for the last couple of million years. All those mothers breastfeeding their babies with milk that’s about 50 per cent saturated fat! And the silly fathers cooking up a mammoth rib and then getting the kids to eat it with all the fat! It’s lucky we have experts who write healthy eating guidelines for what foods kids should be eating now. Otherwise I would not know chocolate milk is considered a healthy food, especially the low fat version so they can actually get a bit more sugar in. And those processed sugar ‘fruit’ rollups are recommended because they’re 99 per cent fat free. How did we get it so wrong as cavemen – eating whole, natural foods, including full fat ones and just eating when we felt like it, from whatever food we could get at the time? Sales of cholesterol drugs and diet shakes must have been a lot higher thousands of years ago than they are now, to save everybody from obesity and heart attacks. Yes, it’s lucky we now have experts who put together helpful information on what our kids should eat. The kind people from the huge, food-manufacturing companies even give lots of money to the studies and have some of their own paid people
available to sit on the boards of these advisory committees and help decide what we all ‘should’ eat. Now we won’t have to Google articles like ‘Why our food is making us fat’, an article from the Guardian in the UK. Or ‘What if It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie’ from the NY Times. And we don’t have to read studies showing how consuming sugars like fructose raises risks of heart attack more than any study about consuming healthy fat will. It’s all just an unlucky coincidence that we have the fi rst generations ever with an expected lifespan shorter than their parents. Same for the fact that IVF clinics are a fast growing industry in medicine. That has nothing to do with fats being an essential precursor to reproductive hormones. So listen to these experts telling us to eat more, processed, convenient low fat food and do your best to see there won’t be humans around in another million years having the same problems!

fter five long years, the wait for Delta Goodrem’s fourth studio album is now over, with her new CD ‘Child of the Universe’ released today. The album features the singles ‘Sitting on Top of the World’, ‘Dancing With A Broken Heart’ and new hit ‘Wish You Were Here’. Delta began working on the album as far back as 2009, with a strong vision for the musical direction from the outset.
a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out. ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is high on both laughs and scares, meeting and subverting viewer expectations, and fans of horror films will be laughing themselves silly with this inventive and unique flick. Critics seem to be sharing a universal state of giddiness about the film, with many claiming it is just the boost the horror industry needed.
Starring Chris Hemsworth and Jesse Williams, ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is a surefire hit for horror junkies.
Delta’s signature positive attitude and mantra of ‘love and light’ are balanced with some darker lyrics and themes on the new album, with the songstress reflecting on a darker period of her life (namely her split with ex-fiance Brian McFadden). The chart-topper collaborated with several songwriters for the 15-track album, including Nick Jonas, with whom she penned the track ‘Safe to Believe’.
Now the album is complete, ‘The Voice’ coach has claimed it is full of potential singles. With her first album since 2007, Delta Goodrem offers more music that is sure to win over Australian hearts.

uthor and historian Paul Ham will appear at Marrickville Library next month to discuss his latest work, Sandakan: The Untold Story of the Sandakan Death Marches. The book, released this month, explores the terrain inhabited by Australian prisoners of war in Borneo during World War II. “It’s been a two-and-a-half year, almost three-year process,” Mr Ham said. The award-winning author of Vietnam, Hiroshima Nagasaki and Kokoda said Sandakan was the first novel where his publisher proposed the topic, instead of him coming up with it himself. “The publisher came to me and asked if I would write this and initially I was hesitant because of the sheer horror of this story,” the 52-year-old Bondi Junction resident said. He said the stories of Sandakan had been “shunned” in history and “hung over time like a bit of a shadow”. Nevertheless, he has uncovered touching details of a horrific tale, including the Allied guerilla networks operating in thick jungle under the noses of the Japanese. Mr Ham said two weeks after the war’s armistice in August 1945, some surviving Australian officers were executed by Japanese soldiers, including the grandfather of Independent Federal MP for Lyne, Rob Oakeshott. “He was one of the doctors who was shot on the 27th of August, after the surrender.” But Ham said details of what had happened to the victims and survivors

were deemed too horrific for the public, not to mention the potential government embarassment over making public a rescue plan that was drawn up but never executed. At the same time, the post-war era saw growing trade links with Japan.
“On their return to Australia, they were muzzled by the government… There were a number of reasons it was kept secret, none of them quite convincing. It really only came out in the last 20 or 30 years. “It’s a revelation to many people,
when they find out what happened... It’s an important story that Australians should know about.” Mr Ham will appear at Marrickville Library on November 8. - Vanessa Watson

lenty of interesting stories are coming out of the world of television this week, so let’s get straight to it and see what’s coming up… First up, huge congratulations to Channel Seven reporter Sally Obermeder for getting the all clear from breast cancer earlier in the week. Sally tweeted: “So excited to report some good news – I’ve been given the all clear!” The bubbly beauty has been battling the disease since October last year, when she was diagnosed the day before giving birth to her first child. We can’t wait to have you back on our screens Sally!
Channel Nine has sacked popular ‘Getaway’ presenter Catriona Rowntree after 20 years with the network. Her departure follows last week’s news from fellow ‘Getaway’ presenter Jules Lund that he was leaving the network. It’s understood ‘Getaway’, which screens on Saturday afternoon, is in big trouble and is likely the next to get ‘boned’ by Nine. Here’s one from the ‘What The Files’ – 2011 ‘X Factor’ runner-up Johnny
Ruffo has joined the cast of ‘Home and Away’, in what can only be described as a cheap move to boost ratings amongst the teenage girl audience. I’m not quite sure what acting experience Ruffo has, if any at all, but I guess if the music career isn’t quite happening, best to try something else. His 16-episode run on the popular soapy will most likely air in the New Year. [Pictured] News coming out of America is that once-popular medical drama ‘Private Practice’ has been axed by its US network. The series will end with the 13th episode in season six. Channel Seven is yet to air any episodes of the sixth and final season, but stay tuned. Channel Seven has unveiled their long list of new shows set to air in 2013. One
of the greatest reality shows ever, ‘The Mole’ is returning under the new title ‘The Mole – Culture Clash’. Other new shows include a reality show from the makers of ‘My Kitchen Rules’ called ‘House Rules’ and a game show where stars learn to dive called ‘Celebrity Splash’. What’s even more interesting are the shows that haven’t been named to return as yet including ‘The Amazing Race Australia’, ‘Deal or No Deal’, ‘Beauty and the Geek’ and ‘RSPCA Animal Rescue’. Let the conspiracy theories begin. Lastly, I praised Rove a few weeks back for the quality of his FOX8 show ‘Rove LA’, turns out I spoke too soon. Over the last few weeks I’ve seen nothing but B – D list celebrities as guests. Come on Rove, the show’s based in LA for crying out loud, pick up your game and interview celebrities we actually care about!

On the other end of the stick another Channel Nine veteran has revealed he too is battling cancer. Popular cricket commentator Tony Greig has been
diagnosed with lung cancer, much to the dismay of cricket fans, who he has been entertaining for years. This follows last week’s announcement by Peter Harvey that he is battling pancreatic cancer. We wish both men a speedy recovery and pray no more legends surprise us with anymore unwanted news.

The car for you: Veloster sport coupe is a winner
A new automated system may take the stress out of traffic jams.
No stress in traffic jams: The car that will drive itself olvo Car Corporation has taken another step on the journey towards autonomous driving – self-driving vehicles – by demonstrating a new traffic jam assistance system. The new system, whereby the car automatically follows the vehicle in front in slow-moving queues up to 50km/h, will be ready for production in 2014. “Th is technology makes driving more relaxed in the kind of monotonous queuing that is a less attractive part of daily driving in urban areas. It offers you a safe, effortless drive in slow traffic,”
V
said Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Corporation, Peter Mertens. The traffic jam assistance function is an evolution of the current Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Aid technology. The driver activates the traffic jam assistance function by pushing a button. When active, the engine, brakes and steering respond automatically. “The car follows the vehicle in front in the same lane. However, it is always the driver who is in charge. He or she can take back control of the car at any time.”
ARK Performance has created a Veloster sport coupe concept.
or alpine and extreme sports enthusiasts, here is a car for you. ARK Performance has created a Veloster sport coupe concept focusing on an extreme sports alpineenthusiast lifestyle. The concept will be exhibited by Hyundai at the 2012 SEMA show in Las Vegas, and offers a fi nely tailored interior using materials, colours, and design themes fitting an extreme winter sports lifestyle. The active sports theme is carried to the exterior with a number of custom accessories further appealing to
F
mountain sports enthusiasts. “Our Veloster Alpine concept reflects the diverse lifestyle versatility we envisioned in the original Veloster concept,” said Ted Lee, owner of ARK performance, Inc. “Th is extreme sports coupe concept will appeal to winter sports enthusiasts who love to carve the snow as much as a twisty canyon road.” The 1.6-litre, direct-injected Veloster engine received engine modifications, including an ARK Performance DTS exhaust system, Nitrous Express Proton Kit and ARK Oil Cooler.

TROY DODDS
t is the story Wests Tigers fans probably never thought they’d read. Indeed, it is somewhat remarkable that Tim Sheens – who won a premiership with the Tigers in 2005 and is still the Australian coach – has been moved aside as head coach and replaced by Mick Potter, who has never coached in the NRL. But with the Tigers becoming the constant under-achievers of the competition, it was obvious that new blood was needed. On Tuesday, the club confi rmed that Potter, who played with Canterbury in the 1980’s and has been coaching in England, would coach the side for the next two seasons. “The appointment was made after a very thorough process that we undertook as a club,” said Tigers CEO, Stephen Humphreys. Potter said he was looking forward to starting work on re-building the Tigers and making them a premiership force. “The playing roster is full of potential and I can’t wait to start working with the group,” Potter said. “Th is role will be a big challenge for me but it’s one that I will approach with lots of confidence and enthusiasm.”
